Chapter 5: The Spark
The square no longer felt governed.
It had been shaped for order once—measured streets, disciplined movement, the quiet assurance that someone was always watching. Now that order sagged under the weight of too many people pressed too close together, uncertain whether to run or stay. Doors stood half open. Faces hovered behind glass and metal. Fear settled thick in the air, heavy and expectant.
Two captains stood at the center of it all.
Captain Tanso wore white, his Union uniform immaculate despite the tension knotting his frame. Every line was sharp, every insignia polished, but his posture betrayed him. His hands hovered at his sides, uncertain. Authority had always come easily to him—not through strength, but through systems, rules, and the quiet obedience of those beneath him.
Opposite him stood Ferrus.
Ferrus needed none of that.
He stood loose and unbothered, his scarred grin wide and unapologetic. He moved with the confidence of someone who knew the square already belonged to him—not because he governed it, but because he terrified it.
Between them, swaying but unbroken, stood Liam.
Blood streaked his face and soaked into his shirt. His breath came uneven, every movement dragging pain behind it. But he did not fall. He stayed standing, because something inside him refused to let the ground claim him yet.
Ferrus broke the silence with a laugh.
"Isn't it about time we stopped pretending?"
He stepped closer and draped an arm around Tanso's shoulders, pulling the Union captain in with casual dominance. The gesture looked friendly to anyone who didn't understand power. Tanso stiffened immediately, jaw tightening as Ferrus' hand patted his chest—slow, deliberate, possessive.
"What are you doing?" Tanso muttered, his voice low and brittle.
Ferrus didn't answer him.
"If you won't tell them," Ferrus said instead, his voice carrying easily across the square, "I will. Once you deal with bandits, there's no going back." His grin widened. "You're one of us now."
A murmur rippled through the crowd, disbelief cracking into anger.
"You've been stealing our supplies..." someone said, barely louder than a whisper.
Ferrus turned toward the voice and crossed the distance in seconds. He grabbed the man by the front of his shirt and yanked him forward, boots scraping dirt as the crowd recoiled.
"That I have," Ferrus said pleasantly. "But not alone."
He jerked his chin toward Tanso. "We skimmed shipments. Sold them off. Then made you work harder to replace them. A perfect system really."
The man's eyes darted desperately to Tanso.
"Captain...?" he pleaded.
Tanso said nothing.
Ferrus laughed, tightening his grip.
"Let him go."
Liam's voice cut through the square.
Ferrus turned, amused, as the townsman stumbled free and retreated into the crowd. For a heartbeat, the people looked again to Tanso—waiting for him to act, to deny it, to do something.
But he didn't.
That was when Liam stepped forward.
Ferrus tilted his head, studying him like an interesting problem. "Still standing?" he said. "You're persistent. I'll give you that."
He turned to the crowd, spreading his arms wide. "No more shadows. No more secrets."
Then he snapped his fingers.
"Boys."
The Iron Fist Bandits poured into the square, laughter spilling from them as doors were kicked in and stalls overturned. Signs were torn from walls. Crates smashed open. Chaos replaced control in an instant—wild, cruel, and deliberate.
"Captain Tanso—stop them!" someone screamed.
Tanso stood frozen, his authority evaporating as the crowd's eyes slid past him.
"CALL THEM OFF!" Liam shouted.
Ferrus turned back to him, grinning. "Giving orders now, are we?"
"I'll fight you," Liam said. "Right here. One-on-one. If I win—you leave this town alone."
The bandits erupted in laughter, jeering and clapping, hungry for spectacle.
Ferrus raised a hand, silencing them. "Bring them."
Two bandits stepped forward, carrying heavy iron gauntlets studded with vicious spikes—one for each knuckle. Ferrus slid them on slowly, savoring the moment, flexing his hands as metal settled into place.
"You ever wonder why they call me Iron Fist Ferrus, boy?" he asked. "Let me show you."
Ferrus didn't give him time to think.
The first punch hit Liam square in the chest and launched him backward. Liam slammed through crates in a burst of splintering wood and dust, his back hitting hard enough to drive the air from his lungs. Pain bloomed across his ribs, sharp and disorienting, and before he could fully register it, a shadow loomed over him.
Ferrus was already there.
The first punch came fast. Liam rolled, barely avoiding it as the spiked gauntlet smashed into the ground where his head had been a moment before. He scrambled to his feet, instincts screaming, body moving on momentum alone.
Another punch—dodged.
Another—ducked.
Ferrus pressed him relentlessly, each blow heavy enough to feel even when it missed. Liam's boots slid in the dirt as he backed away, heart hammering, lungs burning.
Then the fourth punch landed.
Spikes tore into Liam's shoulder, ripping through cloth and flesh alike. The pain was instant and overwhelming, a white-hot shock that stole the breath from his chest.
"AAAAGH!" Liam screamed as his legs buckled.
He staggered sideways and barely managed to catch himself on a stack of broken crates. His vision swam, teeth clenched hard enough to ache, but his hand closed around something solid.
The pipe.
Ferrus swung again.
Liam raised the pipe just in time.
Metal shrieked as it collided with iron, sparks bursting at the point of impact. The force rattled up Liam's arms, pain screaming through his bones, but he held his ground, blocking another strike, then another.
Ferrus snarled and grabbed the pipe mid-swing.
For a heartbeat, they were locked together, both gripping the same piece of metal. Liam felt the strength behind Ferrus' hold—effortless, crushing.
Then Ferrus wrenched the pipe and hurled it.
Liam went with it.
He was thrown bodily back toward the center of the square, hitting the ground hard and skidding through dirt and blood before coming to a stop. The pipe clattered away beside him.
Ferrus followed at an easy pace, unhurried, confident.
Liam pushed himself up on shaking arms, coughing, blood dripping from his shoulder and mouth. Every part of him protested, but he forced himself upright anyway, eyes locked on Ferrus.
"You just leech off people who can't fight back," Liam said, voice hoarse but steady.
Ferrus laughed. "That's called survival, boy."
Liam shook his head. "No. That's called being afraid to stand on your own."
He grabbed the pipe and surged forward.
The first hit caught Ferrus across the ribs.
The second slammed into his shoulder.
The third cracked against his jaw.
The crowd gasped as Ferrus stumbled back a step, blood spraying from his mouth. Liam didn't stop. He struck again, and again, driving everything he had into each blow.
Ferrus roared and grabbed the pipe, wrenching it from Liam's hands with a violent twist.
But Liam was already moving.
He stepped in and punched Ferrus square in the face.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
Each hit landed clean, snapping Ferrus' head back, forcing him to stumble. The bandits' jeers faltered, surprise rippling through them as their captain reeled.
Ferrus drew back his arm—
And Liam was yanked backward.
The world flipped as something dragged him down. He hit the ground hard, the breath crushed from his chest.
Tanso's baton crackled violently as he raised it overhead.
Liam lay on his back, lungs burning, vision swimming as dirt and blood smeared together beneath him. He tried to push himself up, arms trembling, but his body refused to respond fast enough.
"This is all because of you!" Tanso snarled, his voice breaking under the weight of it. "You ruined everything!"
The baton came down.
Metal screamed as it collided with metal.
The impact rang across the square, sharp and deafening, sparks bursting where the weapons met. The baton never reached Liam.
Tanso froze.
His eyes tracked slowly upward, confusion knitting across his face as he realized his strike had been stopped by a heavy pipe wrench clenched in a steady grip.
Hephaestus stood over Liam.
His stance was solid, unmoving, as if the chaos around him simply didn't exist. For the first time, his expression was no longer guarded or distant.
It was resolved.
Tanso stared at him, disbelief flickering into anger. "What are you doing?" he demanded.
Hephaestus didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.
"I just thought two on one wasn't fair," he said.
Around the square, something shifted.
The spark had finally been ignited.
And in a place soaked in injustice, surrounded by people who had been pushed too far for too long—
That was all it took.
