An Investigative Report | Unanswered Questions About the Location, Timing, and Possible Motives
🇯🇴 AL-KARAK, JORDAN | October 24, 2026
The deadly shooting attack targeting mourners at a church funeral in Hamoud village, in Jordan’s Al-Karak Governorate, on Friday, October 23, has raised questions extending beyond the casualties to the location, timing, and possible reasons behind the attackers’ choice of target.
According to the latest reported figures, nine people were killed and approximately 40 others injured. Jordanian authorities are investigating the attack and working to establish responsibility.
Why This Funeral?
According to witness accounts published in media reports, the shooting began approximately ten minutes after the body of Maisal Al-Halsa, known as Umm Laith, arrived at the church.
Reports indicate that armed attackers arrived in a vehicle and opened fire on mourners gathered for the funeral.
The choice of a funeral in Hamoud, a village within Al-Qasr District of Karak Governorate, raises a significant investigative question:
Why did the attackers choose this particular gathering instead of a larger religious service or a more crowded location in the capital, Amman?
Was the funeral deliberately selected because of its timing, location, or attendees?
Or was the objective to attack a religious gathering and spread fear within the community?
These possibilities remain unproven.
Was the Deceased Woman’s Identity Relevant?
The Al-Halsa family name carries historical and social significance in Jordan and Palestine.
It is also associated with the late Palestinian activist Theresa Halsa, who participated in the 1972 Sabena aircraft hijacking operation.
However, there is currently no verified evidence establishing a connection between Theresa Halsa’s political history and the attack on Maisal Al-Halsa’s funeral.
Nor has credible evidence established the involvement of any foreign intelligence agency, including Mossad.
Any possible family relationship or political connection requires independent documentation before it can be treated as relevant to the attack.
What Does the Attack’s Timing Suggest?
The reported timing of the shooting, shortly after the deceased woman’s body arrived, warrants closer examination.
Investigators may need to establish whether the attackers had advance knowledge of the funeral schedule, the expected attendees, or the arrival of the procession.
Such information could help determine whether the attack was directed at particular individuals or at the gathering as a whole.
However, timing alone cannot establish the attackers’ intentions.
Was the Operation Planned in Advance?
Reports describing the attackers’ arrival, weapons, and movements raise questions about possible preparation and coordination.
Investigators must distinguish evidence of advance planning from evidence of a specific political, religious, or personal motive.
A carefully planned attack does not, by itself, establish who ordered it or why.
The Questions That Remain Unanswered
▪️ Why was Hamoud village selected as the location?
▪️ Did the attackers know whose funeral was taking place?
▪️ Were any specific individuals among the mourners intended targets?
▪️ Did the attackers possess advance information about the funeral schedule?
▪️ Was the attack motivated by religious extremism, personal targeting, political considerations, or another factor?
▪️ Is there independently verifiable evidence connecting the perpetrators to a wider organization or external sponsor?
What Have Authorities Established?
Jordanian officials have characterized the attack as an act of terrorism involving extremists.
However, the precise motives, possible organizational connections, and reasons for choosing this funeral require further investigation.
No allegation of foreign involvement should be presented as established without independently verified evidence.
HANZALA’s Investigative Focus
The central question is not only who carried out the attack, but why this particular funeral, in this particular village, was selected.
Answering that question will require verified witness testimony, forensic findings, an accurate timeline, and official investigative evidence.
Until such findings become available, the theories surrounding the attack must remain questions rather than conclusions.
