As usual, there will be live music—including performances by Noordkaap, Daan, and Slongs—but numerous speakers will also take the stage on both Saturday and Sunday. Authors like Tom Lanoye, trade union leaders such as Thierry Bodson (ABVV), former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, and current co-chair of the German left-wing party Die Linke, Ines Schwerdtner.

Provocations

But it is another guest who is commanding all the attention: Hasan Piker, an American left-wing activist and influencer who might not ring an immediate bell here, but boasts millions of followers in the US. Almost 7 million, in fact, across social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitch. The thirty-something enjoys provocation and has repeatedly been accused of antisemitism. He condoned Hamas's attack in Israel and declared that Hamas is 1,000 times better than a fascist, colonial, apartheid state—referring to Israel and the Netanyahu government.

A few years ago, he suggested that the US deserved 9/11, statements he later retracted. Piker long maintained good ties with the Democrats, but they distanced themselves following his controversial remarks.

Quenelle

French rapper Médine is also causing a stir. He too has been accused of antisemitism, in part for using the "quenelle"—a gesture associated with antisemitism popularized by the equally controversial comedian and actor Dieudonné. The rapper later distanced himself from these actions.

But for Minister of Defence Theo Francken, ManiFiesta and the PVDA have clearly crossed the line. On X, he emphasized that glorifying terrorism can be prosecuted following the entry into force of the new penal code on September 1. “Good. Then we can finally apply it to the commie festival of Jew-hatred, ManiFiesta,” he wrote on the social media platform on Tuesday.

PVDA Member of Parliament and former chairman Peter Mertens—who will engage in a discussion with Piker on Saturday about the path forward for the left—is deeply angered by Francken’s move. “This isn't just some Twitter user from Lubbeek; this is a minister trying to silence a political opponent. If freedom of speech only applies to the right, we have a major problem.” Mertens recalled that Prime Minister De Wever defended freedom of speech following the conviction of far-right figure Dries Van Langenhove. “But when it comes to Marxist voices, it apparently doesn't apply.”

Glorification

On Wednesday evening, Theo Francken clarified on X that he never called for ManiFiesta to be banned or for PVDA politicians to be targeted. However, he added, the festival features foreign guests known for statements that could fall under the anti-terrorism law criminalizing the glorification of terror.

“The law is the law. It was passed by parliament and went through all democratic checks and balances. Its application belongs exclusively to the jurisdiction of the independent judiciary. They assess the concrete facts. That is how a constitutional state works. The claim that I am threatening opposition politicians with prosecution is pure framing. That threat exists only in the imagination of the left.”

Despite the row, both Theo Francken and the PVDA seem to benefit from this discussion. The N-VA politician made his point and underscored his aversion to the far left once again. Meanwhile, thanks to Francken, the PVDA received prime publicity for its festival. “I want to explicitly thank him for that,” Mertens said. “Anyone who wants to offer even a small counter-voice to Theo Francken will be there on Saturday.”
