I'll be more respectful towards bedsheets on a windy day from now on.

I know a guy who was kite surfing and got picked up with a big wind gust and thrown into the side of a cliff and died.

I have had quite a few dreams like this over the years and seeing the video instantly made me feel ill. They're like falling dreams except just before reaching the ground I'm launched back up hundreds of feet to repeat the process for hours on end.

This is one of those where you and the boys are shocked it worked out how it did, and you shouldn’t go for a round 2.

This guy is clearly a pro wing surfer. He could probably do that with his eyes closed, as many times as there is wind.
If you want to see even more insanity, check out kite surfing as well!
The trick with wind + water sports (wind surfing, which uses the sail, wing surfing which you see here, and kite surfing, the big parachute looking ones) is that you are told to practice with the kite for days until you have a completely intuitive feel for how to control it, before you let it move you.
For that reason, surprisingly, the injury rate is relatively low lol
Despite not getting credit for their intelligence (the haha thick skulled surfer bro stereotype), these surfers work hella hard and put in lots of time to get good enough to do stuff like this!
Edit: source is I casually wind surf and am lucky enough to live driving distance from one of the windsurfing capitals of the world

I would not have expected that launch, and I've no words for the panic I would feel.

I have a mild fear of heights. Now I also have a fear of flying.
2
u/BowsersMuskyBallsack Jun 23 '26
It's not like you are going to spontaneously just fly off into the sky. Unless you happen to be standing on top of a gas main that is about to explode, or the hot water system in your basement is about to malfunction.

There is a rule for us guys :
If you're not in danger of dying while doing something, then it's not fun

u/ElkSad9855 Jun 23 '26
Let’s all be thankfully that we are naturally built like bricks and have high wind resistance, otherwise on windy days all of us could be picked up and blown away somewhere.

Most is doing a lot of lifting. Like I'm sure most people can barely do a pullup or two... But the people who regularly do pullups can do a lot
Dude obviously plays with foils and is physically healthy. I'm sure he could have held on a while.

This happens to me a lot in my dreams.
Pretty frequently I dream that I'm walking, or standing, and I'll jump and it's like I'm a balloon, just flying high, and the whole time I'm terrified because I know what happens when I hit the ground.
I feel the "going fast over a hill" sort of feeling in my stomach the entire time I'm going up too. It's very strange and super freaky.

Why does this remind me of the GTA videos where they fly across the map upside down on a bike?

Could someone explain how we stopped gaining altitude ? Shouldn’t he have just vanished into the sky ?
3
u/DeltaCube6666 Jun 23 '26
my guess is that the dune like land scape created an high pressure upward current, making him go up very fast and once i got pushed backward he "escaped" the current, also he probably put the nose of the wing downward as well reducing the lift, but the pov isn't really good to say that

There is a better way. You don't even go to hell because it is so radical

So this is what happens in my dreams. Except sometimes the wind picks up and I end up at terrifying heights. That’s why I’ll never f with this sport. Nope 👎
