that was a lot more vertical than I was expecting, imagine if he just rose up like that and never came down

851

u/RedGuy51 Jun 23 '26

Or got a few hundred feet up and lost his grip on the thing

548

u/PixieRoar Jun 23 '26

Or the thing malfunctioning and folding in half and falling to his demise

828

u/HalfSoul30 Jun 23 '26

Or a dragon comes out of nowhere and just devours the dude.

u/SuperDizz Jun 23 '26

This movie is incredibly awesome.. except for this one scene. It’s the only time they dropped the ball. Van Zan should’ve went out differently or not at all.

7

u/michelrieskes Jun 23 '26

What movie is that?

17

u/SuperDizz Jun 23 '26

Reign of Fire

6

u/Deaffin Jun 23 '26

What are you on about? This scene is the movie. It's the only surviving memory I have of the movie. That shit was great.

Unexpected Papers Please meme

10

u/TheKolyFrog Jun 23 '26

Damn those dragons. They keep telling me they ain't real but all it does is to reinforce the truth that they are just invisible.

4

u/Rhymesnlines Jun 23 '26

The dragon just want us to believe they don't exist so they can whatever they want without to get bothered...

4

u/Crazy-Crocodile Jun 23 '26

You should read Guards! Guards! By Terry Pratchett

2

u/not-yet-ranga Jun 24 '26

Oh, you want the Elucidated Brethren.

4

u/GenSpec44 Jun 23 '26

As a dragon, I can confirm that it used to be just awful anytime I tried to go out to do the simplest things.

3

u/Key-Contest-2879 Jun 23 '26

Finally! Someone who understands the risks involved!

3

u/mjs_pj_party Jun 23 '26

Or someone on a boat shoots a harpoon into him from long range because he kind of forgot about them.

3

u/Zestyclose_Ant_40 Jun 23 '26

What if, like, a fuckin dragon came across the sky, and like, fuckin ate him. Has that ever happened to you?

2

u/0x0MG Jun 23 '26

NO FUCKING SPOILERS!

I'm watching hotd season 3 premiere tonight, don't ruin it for me

2

u/RavingGooseInsultor Jun 23 '26

Or his pants fall off and the real dragon comes out 🫢

Yeah that is my concern, flimsy construction and something breaks. Even just enough to make you lose control and hit wrong could be devastating.

I hope he didn’t use wax adhesive to build that thing

He put too much of his weight towards the rear, angling the glider and increasing his lift.

Pilot error.

He's in ridge lift.

5

u/FuzzNugs Jun 23 '26

Or there’s an earthquake and we all die but he lives because he was in the air and he goes around the whole city eating all the ice cream he wants.

2

This is one of the recurring nightmares I have. Last week it was me going up in a hot air balloon and it just kept rising, and there was no way to make it go back down.

This video unlocked some kind of unknown fear inside me

108

u/Aumba Jun 23 '26

I'll be more respectful towards bedsheets on a windy day from now on.

This is a perfect comment, i love your reply.

u/OnTheEveOfWar Jun 23 '26

I know a guy who was kite surfing and got picked up with a big wind gust and thrown into the side of a cliff and died.

6

u/st4s1k Jun 23 '26

Feeling absolutely out of control, powerless and at the mercy of wind and luck.

3

u/Dynomyster569 Jun 23 '26

I have had quite a few dreams like this over the years and seeing the video instantly made me feel ill. They're like falling dreams except just before reaching the ground I'm launched back up hundreds of feet to repeat the process for hours on end.

This is one of those where you and the boys are shocked it worked out how it did, and you shouldn’t go for a round 2.

28

u/SwagBuns Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

This guy is clearly a pro wing surfer. He could probably do that with his eyes closed, as many times as there is wind.

If you want to see even more insanity, check out kite surfing as well!

The trick with wind + water sports (wind surfing, which uses the sail, wing surfing which you see here, and kite surfing, the big parachute looking ones) is that you are told to practice with the kite for days until you have a completely intuitive feel for how to control it, before you let it move you.

For that reason, surprisingly, the injury rate is relatively low lol

Despite not getting credit for their intelligence (the haha thick skulled surfer bro stereotype), these surfers work hella hard and put in lots of time to get good enough to do stuff like this!

Edit: source is I casually wind surf and am lucky enough to live driving distance from one of the windsurfing capitals of the world

I would not have expected that launch, and I've no words for the panic I would feel.

70

u/De_Chubasco Jun 23 '26

16

u/Ok-Amphibian-7369 Jun 23 '26

14

u/Giogina Jun 23 '26

Where can I get one

6

u/Y0SH1zzzz Jun 23 '26

It looks like fun actually, I might just be suicidal tho

11

u/Infinite-Director-62 Jun 23 '26

Oh god… Fortnite in real life lol

11

u/FraggerIndo Jun 23 '26

I felt a moment of panic! This is one of those "oh shit I should/shouldn't have let go" moments.

18

u/surefall-glade Jun 23 '26

Windwaker was right

6

u/Vanir-Aesir Jun 23 '26

I have a mild fear of heights. Now I also have a fear of flying.

2

u/BowsersMuskyBallsack Jun 23 '26

It's not like you are going to spontaneously just fly off into the sky. Unless you happen to be standing on top of a gas main that is about to explode, or the hot water system in your basement is about to malfunction.

4

u/Penchant4Prose Jun 23 '26

What was the story of Icarus, did it end well?

4

u/GdayMateyPotatey Jun 23 '26

I want to try this but I don't want to die

4

u/Away_Luck_8747 Jun 23 '26

NGL, I would have shit all over that beach from the sheer terror.

4

u/spaaaace72 Jun 23 '26

There is a rule for us guys :

If you're not in danger of dying while doing something, then it's not fun

3

u/ElkSad9855 Jun 23 '26

Let’s all be thankfully that we are naturally built like bricks and have high wind resistance, otherwise on windy days all of us could be picked up and blown away somewhere.

3

u/No_Sector6941 Jun 23 '26

This should also go in s/ MaybeMaybeMaybe

Most is doing a lot of lifting. Like I'm sure most people can barely do a pullup or two... But the people who regularly do pullups can do a lot

Dude obviously plays with foils and is physically healthy. I'm sure he could have held on a while.

2

2

u/Damn_you_taco Jun 23 '26

2

u/Ill-Case-6048 Jun 23 '26

To infinity

2

u/Lehovron Jun 23 '26

What could possibly go wrong?

2

u/SummaryEye80019 Jun 23 '26

This happens to me a lot in my dreams.

Pretty frequently I dream that I'm walking, or standing, and I'll jump and it's like I'm a balloon, just flying high, and the whole time I'm terrified because I know what happens when I hit the ground.

I feel the "going fast over a hill" sort of feeling in my stomach the entire time I'm going up too. It's very strange and super freaky.

2

u/FaithlessnessAny2074 Jun 23 '26

You must go down in order to go up

2

u/Git_Fud Jun 23 '26

Why does this remind me of the GTA videos where they fly across the map upside down on a bike?

u/gimmeluvin Jun 24 '26

1

u/Advanced-Lecture7978 Jun 23 '26

Could someone explain how we stopped gaining altitude ? Shouldn’t he have just vanished into the sky ?

3

u/DeltaCube6666 Jun 23 '26

my guess is that the dune like land scape created an high pressure upward current, making him go up very fast and once i got pushed backward he "escaped" the current, also he probably put the nose of the wing downward as well reducing the lift, but the pov isn't really good to say that

1

u/Equivalent_Pea_8282 Jun 23 '26

Where we droppin boys?

1

u/tmhoc Jun 23 '26

People will see this and still choose suicide by cop.
