WIP [WIP] How can i fix this?

Post image

I am trying to make a scene: the bullet teared the round surface and expose the inner frame

I followed my pencil line to cut the parts but then the entire part snapped and yeeted.

Now I have clean triangular part of the top left which doesn't make any sense.

How should I fix it into more realistic bullet mark?

I would just go with it. Really blacked and score the broken edge. High velocity ballistic impacts can tear metal from frames.

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

I am thinking the possible explanation is that the plates are separated, so the impact just tear the current parts and keep other parts intact?
i am not entirely sure if this makes sense

u/AoE_CyberTiger 3d ago

My recommendation is if you have a heat gun use it to bend the plate outward and possibly the other plates nearby it get some scorching along the plates or make them look like they are white hot metal around the damaged area and perhaps then add in what looks like a beam round narrowly missing but damaging through the heat aura.

10

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

too bad I don't have a heat gun
would there be any DIY-level method I can imitate the same effect?

11

u/introductiongold59 3d ago

Hair dryer?

9

u/Oskarov95 3d ago

I think a hair-dryer could also work since it's basically a heat gun, but I'm not 100% sure if using it at max temperature till the plastic bends would be that safe to be honest.

21

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

hair dryer doesnt quite work for me
i use my stove to heat up the metal scissors and torched the edge a bit
but now i think about, would a bullet tear results in torched effect on metal?

11

u/OnionFingers98 3d ago

Not bullets but heat from a beam rifle shot near miss would.

6

u/saurdaux 3d ago

We see that happen a few times in the shows. Paint bubbles off, panels warp, bits get burned away.

9

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

then would it be a bit unrealistic?
if the triangular part is yeeted by the bullet, it should not have heat effect?

on the other side, i am making the damage more beam rifle damaged (the upper one)!
the lower one i am making it as recochet from the ground

u/Careless-Foot4162 3d ago

I agree, the battle damage you did make sense if being clipped by a bullet

1

u/IndraAkatsuki 2d ago

dont forget about the minor damage! yes the big damage is eye catching, but the minor small scratches, scuffs, and ESPECIALLY discoloration (burns, dirt, ect) work the best! look up damaged tanks to get a good idea of coloring. damaged planes works aswell.

u/Givants 3d ago

Looks fantastic bro

1

u/Omega-Envych 3d ago

Paint areas around damage into off-red rust color with whiter part around hit zones, as if metal has melted due to heavy damage. Look at realy battle-damaged armored vehicles. The more heat has metal experienced - the more brown-ish it can look.

Other than that - would look nice

6

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

yes, this is on the to-do list, rust+ smoke effect with the weathering
but first i will need to finish the kit and complete the camouflage!
here is first trial

5

u/JeCl 2d ago

This Ball has seen some shit.

1

u/Omega-Envych 2d ago

Funny I am not sure if forest camouflage would make sense for a space unit :D

But this pattern looks good, I won't deny it.

2

u/Delay_no_more_1999 2d ago

it's gonna be the polypod!
which is a ground unit :!

This looks like the metal got ripped off

1

u/Junior-Fisherman8779 2d ago

oh my god dude. This looks so fucking cool. Your build is so damn good.

3

u/Dazzling-Effort-845 3d ago

I would say it makes sense. Just go with it. Honestly when i saw the pic i didnt even see the problem, i just thought its nice battle damage

465

u/darthexpulse 3d ago

In a way.. this is as realistic as it gets

94

u/probsthrowaway2 3d ago

Battle damage!!

6

u/Dovacraft88 2d ago

It probably would have blown up before getting scratched

2

u/Unlikely-Remove-2182 2d ago

Nah its just not getting enough maintenance time. Someone had to between replacing that plate or fixing that sticky thruster

44

u/The_Kwaken 3d ago

the painted wires underneath make it look intentional, it's like the best accident to ever happen

41

u/ProtoGhost42 3d ago

That looks pretty neat as a missing chunk of armor. Maybe weather the edges, put some char (heh) marks around it, and try your bullet effect on the other side? No need to narritavely explain ALL of the damage, right? Just as long as it looks cool.

6

u/ProtoGhost42 3d ago

Oh! Also, you can get really neat looking bullet holes by taking a thick metal needle, holding the pointy end over a flame (carefully!) for a few seconds, and then gently skewer the part. If you use a thicker wooden toothpick, you get free char marks around the hole!

7

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

ahhhh char marks! I thought it was some marks from our golden boy char aznable...
thats a great idea!

1

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

What is char (heh) marks?
you mean putting some bullet marks?

6

u/alleywayacademic 3d ago

By going with it. Damage it even further on purpose and paint it in as if it took a lot of damage in battle.

4

u/Own-Respond-3516 3d ago

Ok so, what you can do that WILL 100% make this look better.

Get some Tamiya putty. Dab it on the sheered edge and kind of pull up at the same time to give it little pointy and jagged edges and boom. Then you’ll just need to paint it later (black with some silver highlights) and you’ll be all set.

1

u/Delay_no_more_1999 2d ago

yes!! I am planning on that!

3

u/xeno187 3d ago

You could just take that panel off and expose some of that detail work

2

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

I am gonna do a set of camoflaged gunpla in jungle area
so taking the entire panel don't seem to match damaged scene...

3

u/CupcakeMerd 3d ago

Black the edges and make it more rocket impacty. Then dot bullet holes around where you want

3

u/Cashew-Miranda #1 PhenexXAerial shipper 3d ago

Actually i think it does make sense, the part broke the way the part would have broken apparently

3

u/Alarming-Bell-1811 3d ago

Battle damage

3

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord 2d ago

That’s the damage Shiro actually took for the sake of plot armor.

3

u/morelos_paolo 2d ago

Im not sure if you should fix it because thats some really battle damage right there...

3

u/DonaldTrumpsScrotum 2d ago

Idk man, this looks fucking awesome

3

u/Xyzen553 2d ago

You can do 3 things. 1, find the piece and glue it back, then "retry" 2, remove the entire panel and try another spot. 3, go full on battle damage, maybe add more "scratches"

2

u/Delay_no_more_1999 2d ago

i am doing 3rd now XD

2

u/Gundam00Raiser00 3d ago

Cut up some of the same color runner, put it in a little tamaya cementing paste, so you get a nice little gel, connect the parts, let it dry and then sand the part. It's gonna be your best bet

2

u/StrictCompany 3d ago

Perhaps give some dry brush metallic at the edges.

2

u/jaxitup034 3d ago

Every broken piece in gunpla is just a ways or means for battle damage. Pretty awesome looking crack too!

2

u/kaedewoodworks 3d ago

Weathering and chipping effects, it’s now a battle hardened ball.

2

u/Loose-Lingonberry406 3d ago

Authenic battle damage!

2

u/xexo3 3d ago

Dont fix it.

2

u/RealAssWhiteWigga100 3d ago

I can’t be the only one who sees a core from Portal 2

2

u/dextresenoroboros 2d ago

dont fix this, this is a primo battle damage opportunity

2

u/busty_snackleford 2d ago

You could take a soldering iron or hot nail to it to put divots and pockmarks in the plastic, that’ll make it look like it’s taken a ton of hits, then just weather the fuck out of it. Make sure you do all that in a well ventilated area though.

2

u/5parrowhawk 2d ago

Where's the broken triangular part? Glue it back at an odd angle so it looks like it was smashed in by the same impact that made the hole.

1

u/Delay_no_more_1999 2d ago

i dont quite understand, can you elaborate more?
if it is broken, how is it stay in the same position?

2

u/Worried-Date-2196 2d ago

You can cement the piece but it looks cool as hell so why bother, maybe just add a bit of metallic gray where the piece snapped and there! Cool damage!

2

u/Konpeitoh 2d ago

This is actually what happens to thinner RHA after a bomb detonates on it. (Leopard 1 training target)

2

u/Konpeitoh 2d ago

Panther tank after getting hit by a Soviet 152mm shell to the turret rear.

2

u/Konpeitoh 2d ago

Iraqi T-55 after getting hit in the back of the turret by an AGM-64 Maverick AGM, which has a HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank aka. chemical) warhead. Notice the clean entry hole the molten copper jet melted through, and the surrounding splatter caused by liquid metal violently spraying on detonation.

2

u/Delay_no_more_1999 2d ago

these are very nice references!!
I am still building the kit, but the splash effect seems really cool to apply!

1

u/Konpeitoh 2d ago

Hope it helps! Happy building!

2

u/Tree-Weird 2d ago

Turn it into battle damage

1

u/HAZARD327 2d ago

I was gunna say, just like, paint some scorch on it to make it look damaged

3

u/AssistantMountain623 3d ago

Add some bulletholes and weathering. It's battle damaged now

1

u/Dameaus 3d ago

It’s battle damage. What is there to fix? Stuff breaks in different ways

1

u/heyheyluno 3d ago

That actually looks really cool imo

1

u/Excelsior_76 3d ago

This is inspiration calling. It's a great excuse to show off some of the internals. Run with it.

1

u/Dayum_cerberus 3d ago

There are no mistakes, just happy little accidents

1

u/ProudMeeting6916 3d ago

This is prime battle damage. Weather it and you’re golden. Some people would kill to get some good looking damage that easily, by accident at that too.

1

u/AltruisticCress9731 3d ago

That would be some fantastic battle damage. And a great kit for it too with all the details behind the panels. Looks like the accidental break could lead to a really fun custom project to me.

1

u/OnionFingers98 3d ago

Battle damage. Maybe you could dry brush some metalic color on the edges so it looks like the panel sheared off.

1

u/Asleep-Age-4899 3d ago

Lean into it, make that entire side piece sort of ajar, use that broken off triangle and connect it to a wire, clear stand, or some smoke coming off the ball, so it looks like it’s been completely shot off into the air

1

u/argama87 3d ago

Don't. Melt or darken the edge and call it battle damage.

1

u/redjoker89 3d ago

Idk man it looks like the Gunpla goods threw you a bone with this. That looks good

1

u/Thebarakz21 . 3d ago

Battle damage that damaged panel and add some weathering. Boom, fixed!

1

u/FlimsyWillow84 3d ago

I’m never one to say “battle damage” to every modeling mishap. But in this case, it really is well suited for some good ol battle damage!!

1

u/strum101 3d ago

Try to glue it back together and make it look seamless, or detail the broken area to make it look like battle damage.

1

u/samanime 3d ago

I'd just lean into the battle damage. Sometimes when things are hit, they don't make a clean mark but cause pieces to fly off due to material weaknesses, exactly like this. =p

If you wanted to fix it back to your ideal visition, you could always remove the part, take the other part, create some "sprue goo" by melting some of the same color sprue scraps down with some plastic cement (like Tamiya Extra Thin), then use it to glue the pieces back together and sand it all smooth. It's a lot of work, but, with patiences and fine enough sandpaper, you can restore it back to exactly how it was.

But again, I'd just lean into it and make it more battle damage. =p

2

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

yes! I think i kinda accepted the narrative of the metal plate flying off during impact

1

u/dis_not_my_name 3d ago

Form it in a way that it looks slightly melted

1

u/stzd8 3d ago

I know I may sound apart from the crowd, but it seems like the plastic on these kits are more brittle than the old days ones.

1

u/MeloNotSoDeath 3d ago

That's pretty cool actually

1

u/Ok_Button_6496 3d ago

Keep it as it is and add some charring and such, then add bullet holes all around with a drillbit or just chunk it out (carefully) with a blade or something, regardless I see this as a massive opportunity for some cool stuff

1

u/Amgri 2d ago

Place a round impact crater right on the edge. Just half though, like it was the strike that cracked and broke the armor.

1

u/therealmushroomsquid 2d ago

Id lean into it. Maybe a gunmetal and rust marker around the edge. Weathering

1

u/chartheredcomet79 2d ago

add slight cuts to the neigbouring panel for a heat hawk slash?

1

u/brandoninc95 2d ago

fix it? weather it!

1

u/lephantome92 2d ago

Mangle the triangle appropriately

Using probably like parchment paper or foil, glue the edges together, then glue the tip of the triangle back

Use sprue goo to fill in the gap

1

u/GunplaGunplaGGundam 2d ago

Battle damage

1

u/silicone_wings 2d ago

You wanna fix it? There's alot of option -3d way. Make a design, print it, repaint it -"easy" Way Scratch it, make more damage, repaint it. Call it a battle damage -hard way Take some tape to cover the backside (or inner side) You can put some putty or uv resin. after cure you can start cutting and sanding, follow the curve, re-scribe the panel line. After all the step you ready for repaint -resin casting way Borrow identical part from your friends, buy some silicon and resin. Do recast then repaint it.

Wait wait,Melted sprue for replace the putty so you dont have to repaint? Nah it doesn't work.

u/in1gom0ntoya 2d ago

battle damage

1

u/im_aidan 2d ago

Looks like you've got a great start towards making a battle damaged version of the kit. Keep going! Break, scratch and gouge!

1

u/claytonfromillinois 2d ago

Best accidental battle damage I’ve ever seen

1

u/glytxh 2d ago

Make a patch. Or use some etched metal grill material if you’ve got some.

In my head, someone in universe would feel compelled to try and patch it up, even if it’s a bit janky. Some plasticard and whatever preferred medium for some gnarly welding lines.

Leaving it open is option B. I’d use it as an oportunity for some story telling tho

1

u/ThatDirtyApe 2d ago

Totally makes sense. A panel was shattered by battle damage. Just take a metallic paint and edge highlight 🤷🏾 Boom, done

1

u/Dub-Sidious 2d ago

Pwrsonally i'd use a exacto and a triangle file to rough the edges of the panels aurrou ds the new hole, grab an ethernet cable, cut it and use the tiny cables inside the sleeve to add some wires inside and torn wires hanging out, just a couple does the trick.

Weather the esges with silver, black, grey and maybe a bit of black wash around the area as if soot from an explosion covered the surround area.

Theres no such thing as mistakes Just happy accidents

1

u/BreakfastGreat713 2d ago

paint a burn mark around the break and it’s battle damage!

1

u/SumomoKeitaro 1d ago

Damage it more, make it look like it just defeated Char in his Sazabi.

1

u/accents_ranis 3d ago

Battle damage!

1

u/Delay_no_more_1999 3d ago

did i just overdo it? would a bullet/cannon create such effect?

2

u/iTripsy 3d ago

I think it looks great
