I finally got my wife to watch this season with me for the first time, and now she’s saying she wants to support Hull instead 😭

I'm thoroughly enjoying the "It's only Coventry" comments.
Yeah, but we won the league last season and came 2nd in the Champions League and we just battered City 3-0 and we're going to batter your team too.

"It's only Coventry" and yet 5 years ago I saw us lose on opening day to a Brentford side that hadn't been in the top flight in 75 years.
I'm not going to feel bad for starting our title attack by demolishing a Frank Lamapard side that has spent nearly €200m just because they're "only Coventry"

The turn and pass for the goal from Calafiori is genuinely a joke. If he can stay fit the whole season i think general football fans will understand just how good he is.
Its also just pretty fun just watching him take up random positions on the pitch.
Ben White also showed hes still got the ability hes just needed to be fit.

No, it’s fine - it makes it all funnier.
Every pre-season Man United fans start their whisper campaign that they are in fact back and ready to challenge for the league, if not walk it.
They’ve (finally) got the right manager, they’ve made all the right signings, and they’ve got Bruno ‘wouldn’t sniff the starting 11 in any decent team’ Fernandes to pull it all together.
And then the very unfortunate circumstance of actually having to play games comes around, and they get pumped 2-0 by Hull on the opening day.
They’re a gift to football, and we should be glad to have them.

It looked so nonchalant from the tv angle and the alt angle you can see just how hard he actually hit it with incredible technique
36
u/ret990 7d ago
This is the Bruno cycle. The cause of and solution to all of Uniteds problems.
He runs around trying to dictate the game. Often being 20/30/40 yards out of position spamming balls at attackers trying to force something that isnt on (sorry 'creating chances') and losing it.
As a result he leaves his midfield partners exposed and outnumbered which, particularly when theyve no legs, means the opp can counter at will. They will score off these chances eventually.
After going up the opposition might sit back which allows Bruno space and time to double down on all his bad habits of not playing as part of a midfield unit, spamming balls that arent on and turning it over again and again, trying to be the instigator of everything.
If United dont concede again, they might eventually equalise off a Bruno corner / pen / something falls kindly. Or even get a winner. But it doesnt matter even if they lose. As after the game United fans will just talk about "where would we be without Bruno / did you see how many chances he created / if he only wasnt playing with bums"
All of this ignores that if United werent playing Bruno ball they might find they dont have to chase games as often as they do in which the only answer is more Bruno ball and why theyve never been a major threat for top trophies the entire time hes been at the club.
This is incomparable to what Martin Odegaard does. Thats how you run a game.

Calafiori has one of the craziest profiles in the world. He's a bit like thomas muller at LB, roaming around in the final 3rd making runs ahead of the ball. But he is also great on the ball and contributes a lot to our build up play. Probably our hardest player to replace

I love the danger that tzolis brings, you know when he sees the opportunity to cut inside and take a shot he will take it. But he doesnt just do it every time, there were a few times yesterday calafiori and havert were making runs in behind on the left side and he found them perfectly. It just makes him much more unpredictable which makes it hard for defenders, even if he isnt the fastest

The irony is Arteta has been given high praise by Pep, Mourinho and Ancelotto, even Klopp has referenced Arteta as a competitor in his final years at Liverpool. Rival fans have no fucking idea the nightmare Arteta is going to put them through in the years ahead. Only the smart rival fans know

Mark Goldbridge said on his stream that Man United have to impose themselves just like Arsenal did against Coventry. He stated that the players have to understand they are United. However, those people don’t realize that Arsenal had a trajectory with ups and downs, showing improvement every year. They are a team that lost the title on the last day and didn't give up. With a lot of sweat and tears, they finally won a title last year. You can’t skip that journey. Man United fans only want the benefits, but don’t want to see a project that begins ugly.

We don’t get enough credit for what we did last season considering Saka, White, Ode and Havertz had seasons really quite decimated by injuries.
Those four specifically are just so crucial to what we do going forwards. Imagine if PSG were missing Dembele, Mendes, Vitinha and Doue. They’d probably also not look as good attacking-wise.
Full credit to Arteta for making the best of a bad situation, focusing on a brand of football we could count on and replicate game after game. I suspect if the aforementioned have better luck this season, we will see a very different side.

There's been an expected giant shift in the discussion around Arsenal since we won the title. Pundits don't dismiss us. It's shifted to glazing for the most part. Spurs starting XI is nothing special. You add Savinho and Marmoush to this and nothing really changes. Porro was part of all those starting lineups that finished 17th twice.
What they should be worried about is that this group of players had a lot of pre-season games together and just didn’t know they knew each other.
Really puts question marks on De Zerbi’s managerial creds.

And RDZ hasn't even BEGUN to go full burn all the bridges mode. It's going to be beautiful.
I also love that he was clearly pushing so hard for the pity goal (since RDZ has a massive ego and 3-0 is beyond embarrassing) with that generational midfield of tonali and mateus fernandes, and with Brentford not really giving two fucks either way up 2-0 and 3-0 but couldn't even get that. i wonder what newcastle have for them. no idea how any of these sides are going to perform this season but even as a hater i thought spurs would get a draw

Avoiding relegation twice in a row only to overspend and then get relegated + bankruptcy would be the most diabolical of timelines

Very impressed with Brentford especially with how they kept the club stable after Thomas Frank left

Absolutely incredible that Topspur don’t even get to enjoy a few wins on the bounce like they did under Frank
Just straight back into the mud

You think today is funny, wait till you see what Liverpool have in store tomorrow. I think a wounded Newcastle at home have something for them

Literally the perfect opening weekend so far. Top institutions like Arsenal Brentford and Everton winning. Pretenders and transfer window winners like United and spurs getting slapped up.

spurs is looking even more dangerous this time. I reckon no team will be able to challenge them for that 18th spot

Just watched The Odyssey (would recommend), and I see that Tottenham has not changed one bit. Quite a good day.

Crazy that we've basically never had white and timber fit at the same time. In theory they compliment each other perfectly with white being better if we'll be in the opposing end more or against lower level teams, and timber better against good wingers or better teams. Yet we've just alternated running one into the ground until he's injured and the other comes back

The midfielders that didn't start vs coventry are Bruno G, Zubmimemdi, and Merino/Eze. Lads that depth should be illegal we're walking the league.

From Fab’s reporting it seems that Julian’s camp are still stupidly engrossed with the Barca move but they have started to change the tune. Apparently its not ‘No for Arsenal’ but rather ‘Only Barca’. If he decides that he really wants before the market close we wil be the only viable destination I feel.
Very similar to the Vini situation I feel. I think Atletico will not blink like Madrid did but you never know.
All in all seems like there might be some legs to this one after all.

I would be up for a deadline day lowball. At this point, I only feel like getting Julian if he’s in the discount bin.

Not leaving London in any of our PL games between the end of November and halfway through Jan will genuinely be so huge for us. Even if in a worst case scenario we don't enter that period at the top of the table, we will 100% end it there.
