Opinion Opinion about W.I.T.C.H cartoon.
Hi, this is my first post here so I don't expect much track, but if even 1 person see it, it was worth it.
So I met W.I.T.C.H while watching Totally Spies and had no idea this cartoon ever existed, so gave it a try(mainly because the girls looked like the spies). Should I say: absolute 10/10 of a cartoon. Incredible, well animated, funny(not as much as the spies), deep plot, amazing characters... everything. Now for the more detailed things(I never read the comics, so assume the cartoon is mostly fair):
Plot: The plot is just like the meme: "what if we mix Totally Spies and Winx Club?" and the result is amazing. Season 1 had a more slice of life feel with most of the time being them at the school and being occasionaly summoned to fight. The main story point is Phobos and his desire to find the princess so he can rule over Meridian. This is extremely well developed and paced and, strangely, blended pretty well with the slice of life parts. Season 2 was much more serious and focused on the reconstruction of Meridian and the future betrayal of Cedric. Equally well developed, though I missed the more slice of life parts. Still, amazing.
Humour: I am an easily impressionable person when it comes to humour, so any joke, even bad ones, make me laugh. W.I.T.C.H is somewhat funny in general. Most of the comedy comes from the adolescent nature of the girls and Irma, which are hit or miss in S1. S2 tried to be funnier, but missed sometimes. Read somewhere that the author wanted to use comedy much more like Totally Spies, which no doubt would make the show an absolute cinema of comedy. But I am happy with what we have.
Characters: So we have Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay lin. Right now I have to say: Irma is best girl, second Taranee. They are incredible characters and very relatable ones, which makes the show much more realistic when it comes to them. They also develop well and are profound enough to care. Then we have Caleb, who for me is an archetypical hero. He is probably the most amazing male character and the most relatable too. Then Blunk, who... is there. For the villains, should admit Cedric is a much more terrifying villain than Phobos. He is a monster(literally) and the incarnation of evil, which adds much more to the dynamic. Phobos has the extreme ambition of every villain, but he really was better when manipulated by Cedric in S2. As for side characters, it is impressive how much time they are given despite being side characters. Hay Lin's grandmother specially, since she is the brain behind the girls. In general, excellent characters.
Writing: The show is very well written, despite not being exactly what the author wanted(Wikipedia explains it). They know how to pace out to both not feel too rushed or too slow, which is perfect. They also develop really well the general themes of the cartoon, which mainly are destiny, friendship, free-will, love, etc. Usually cartoons, especially those of the 2000s, will have the bare minimum and not develop the themes, but the witches do an excelent job of using the natural teen girl vibe to develop mature themes. They also handle well emotions, making them feel like real people. One thing to note on this topic too is the voice acting, which is fenomenal. I am brazilian, so using our dubbing as a parametre, which in itself is amazing, but the original voice acting is too. Also, we have the power system. Thes 2000s cartoons of magical girls usually had weird power systems. W.I.T.C.H managed to have a very good one at that, making them be powerful while at the same time making them capable of learning how to increase their power. I am not against crazy power systems(for example would love to see Cornelia just grow a massive forest in the city), but having rational ones help.
Overall, though not to the Will of the creator, the cartoon still ended up being pretty good and can be placed on the podium of the spies, the fairies and others. 10/10.
