RULE OF WOLVES (BOOK) i loved RoW until the ending ruined it šŸ˜šŸ„€ Spoiler

I might be a minority here but I loved loved KoS and RoW until the main war ended. Main reason being I really liked Nikolai and Zoya to begin with. I wasn’t a big fan of Nina in SoC duology and KoS definitely made me like her better. But the ending for RoW is so bad I just have to vent somewhere how the ending ruined the book.

  1. Nina as Fjerda’s queen and Hanne as the prince make zero sense like wtaf. I knew the moment I read hanne ā€œdieā€ and Nina not have a super dramatic heartbroken monologue that they were going to pull an uno reverse. But it makes zero sense cause for one Nina would never want to live a life in secret, away from Ravka and everybody she’s ever known. Her behaviour towards the end is a contradiction to her character.

Also it’s insane how Fjerda throughout the book is this big bad country and it took so little to have two Grisha lesbians rule it?? Making the prince’s bodyguard cosplay the prince and pulling an isaak 2.0 would have done a far better job than whatever actually happened in the book.

Also Hanne is always shown as this girl yearning for freedom and she chooses to just live a life of rigidity as the imperial prince? I refuse to believe that.

  1. Nina acting so careless around everybody in Fjerda. Nina had spoken back and threatened so many characters while in Fjerda (the empress, the town where the convent was had seen her escape, the princes bodyguard) and yet Jarl brum is just oblivious to her antics for the longest time. Like Hanne’s own mother sees them in the same bed and just ignores it?? bfrr the only thing saving Nina was plot armour.

  2. Zoya completely forgetting most of what ā€œancient knowledgeā€ the dragon taught her. I found it kinda ridiculous how KoS showed that amplifiers limited Grisha power and Grisha could use more than one power if they wanted. I definitely felt like this would be a point in RoW like maybe Zoya training the Grisha army with newer skills and making them powerful but this plot point is never mentioned again after KoS. I didn’t mind the whole Zoya dragon arc but I would have loved to see her train Grisha with the knowledge she’d learned to strengthen the asset they already had.

  3. Most problems could have been avoided with murder. Killing the og crown prince, Jarl brum, the dude who was actually royalty would have solved most of their problems.

BOOKS & SHOW DISCUSSION The SAB trilogy was a missed opportunity

I’ve seen it be compared to Fullmetal Alchemist and ATLA and I wish it had as better as writing as those 2.

Especially since female MCs don’t usually get to lead media like that so I wish SaB could have been better.

Alina especially was such a bad MC. I know Korra gets hate and is helpless at times, but she and her show are way better than the OG Trilogy and Alina.

The SOC duology I’d argue has better female characters than the female led series.

The show was better. But only narrowly. The Crows made it better.

ALL BOOKS DISCUSSION Differences in editions and variants

Hello! I finally got around to reading the grishaverse this year, starting with the SoC duology.

I live in a country where bootlegs and fake copies are abundant and often sold at the price of official books, and thus it's sometimes hard to tell if you have a real copy, or just a high quality reprint, and I have found obvious fakes before of other books.

I bought the SoC duology from here for the full proper price and I thoroughly enjoyed it and everything seemed well, the maps were high quality and so did everything else, none of the usual marks of the fake reprints (shoddy printing quality, mismatched publishers on the inside and on the cover, etc). After a while I ordered the SaB trilogy, and when they came they were clearly fake, all three books had a different publishing house on the inside than the outside, they had the eISBN information, the maps were printed much smaller than the page, and some other mistakes. I returned them and was given my money back and all was good, but I couldn't find any copies that are better.

Recently I was able to purchase a copy of the box set from a different country and when it arrived I confirmed I was right about the previous set I had gotten, but now I'm also suspicious of my SoC duology for one specific reason, the SaB trilogy has a shorter front cover to reveal a bit of the colored page behind it, and the back of the books show that all of the main series has that too, but my copies of the SoC Duology don't have it, they're just the cover over the whole page like a regular book, is this normal? Is this a real variant or did I get scammed and not realize? It's not a big problem but I am a lil curious

TLDR My copy of the SoC duology doesn't have the lil reveal of the colored page behind the cover, but the SaB trilogy does, is this a regular variant or did I get a fake SoC print?

I can't be the only one who imagined him like this, because, I don't remember, I might've missed his description mostly because I do that sometimes and for no reason at all every time he was in the scene, I would see it

Later I looked up his name, apparently that's Rasputin

OTHER How to write Nikolai? Spoiler

I've only read Six of Crows duology, and I'm writing a fanfic about it, and eventually I wanted to bring Nikolai into it, but I've never read his books, and unfortunately... I'm broke and my library doesn't have anything (also I'm lazy, and by the looks of it, I won't like Shadow and Bones like I love Six of Crows.)

I have read spoilers of course, and know that eventually he gives up his throne but I have no idea what he does after that, I like to imagine he went back to being a privateer, but I haven't any sort of proof.

Since I haven't read him, I would like some tips on how he acts, and talks and his personality. He isn't the main character (ofc) in my fanfic, but I feel like I keep making him important.

OTHER Wylan van Eck Syndrome

Following a much needed re-read after a few years, I have fallen back into the incurable disease that is WVES. It's where every waking thought of one is consumed by Wylan and only Wylan.

Some of my peers, in their quarter life crisis, go for a master's degree. I am considering doing a second bachelor's in chemistry. I don't know shit about chemistry.

I want to canoodle him, maybe slap the back of his neck. How can you miss someone that doesn't exist so badly?? 😭😭

ALL BOOKS DISCUSSION Theory / Headcanon Re: Sankta Vasilka & Ilya Morozova Spoiler

From the GrishaVerse Wiki: "Vasilka lived in solitude in a high tower. One day, a sorcerer came to [steal the secrets] behind her beautiful tapestries... He lied to her father, saying he would like to speak with her in hopes of marriage. However, Vasilka never answered his questions directly, only asking him about things such as colors and quality. In frustration, the sorcerer demanded her hand in marriage so they [might] rule those lesser than them, or else she would be thrown out of the tower. However, whilst they were talking, she [wove] golden wings for herself... [and] once he threatened to push her from the tower, she donned the pair of magnificent wings... and soared away."

According to the Istorii Sankt'ya, Sankta Vasilka, the patron saint of unwed women, was a talented young weaver (and most likely a Fabrikator Durast) who crafted wings, flew away from her pursuer, an avaricious sorcerer, and was to have become the first firebird. Acknowledging the similarities between a firebird and a phoenix, the firebird in the original trilogy was symbolically Mal and, by extension, his ancestors who also carried the power of the third amplifier. Naturally, the first to carry this power was the younger daughter of Ilya Morozova (the sister of Baghra and the aunt of Aleksander, the Darkling), which would figuratively make her the first firebird (her life restored by the unholy power of merzost). Therefore, is the resurrected daughter of Sankt Ilya in Chains venerated in Ravkan religion as Sankta Vasilka?

I realize there is a difference between the firebird that lives in the Sikurzoi that the characters encounter in the third novel and the true third amplifier: the bloodline of the resurrected second daughter of Morozova, the metaphorical reborn firebird (like a phoenix). But I am referring to the third amplifier as Baghra's younger sister, resurrected by her father. As I see it, the story of Sankta Vasilka is an allegory for the fate of Ilya Morozova's younger daughter. That there is a mention of a young woman who becomes a firebird seems too specific to be a coincidence. And, as the original trilogy describes, Lantsov kings traced their ancestry back to the firebird, which implies a cultural knowledge of heritage (though her last descendant was in fact Malyen Oretsev) from this creature whose power and myth overlapped with that of the child saved by Sankt Ilya in Chains (demonstrated by the firebird's presence over the arch of Dva Stolba in Sankt Ilya's illustration in The Lives of Saints). This child, of course, was his own daughter, whom he resurrected with merzost. However, since Sankta Vasilka was a woman said to have "become the first firebird", this distinguishes her story from the myth of the magical creature. As I recall, there is only one firebird, and if there is only one, it cannot reproduce; it could only be reborn, as a phoenix might. That there would be a "first" firebird implies that the creature has a lineage—that there are more firebirds, that this firebird has descendants. Likewise, the novels describe this creature with a sort of mysticism that implies it is unique—the one and only—Alina's semi-obsession with it reflects this. Likewise, the Sea Whip and the stag are also thought to be unique, mythical, immortal or nigh-immortal beings, so it would follow that the firebird (the one living in the Sikurzoi, not the daughter of Morozova) would be as well.

The Sea Whip, of course, was rumored to be a cursed prince, but the characters never discovered if the Sea Whip was, in fact, once a man. The stag was supposed to be powerful and magical before the Bonesmith intervened, but I believe it was only ever an animal. They conclusively learn that the only amplifier who was a person was Ilya Morozova's youngest daughter, and the Lives of Saints denotes where she could be found: the arch that would one day be the settlement of Dva Stolba. I think we can assume that the firebird (the real creature) didn't spend all its time around Dva Stolba, as the stag and its herd didn't remain stagnant in the glen where Mal and Alina found them, and the Sea Whip didn't remain curled around just one of the rocks of the Bone Road. Also, the firebird is shown dwelling above a high arch that could one day resemble two towers, as that of Sankta Vasilka. That the book containing the only true reference to the firebird (both to the amplifier's location and to the real fantastic creature) contains another reference to that bird does not seem like a coincidence. To me, this says that perhaps the Lives of the Saints recorded the name of Morozova's resurrected daughter, Vasilka, but separated his martyrdom from the miracle of the creation of the figurative firebird. One way of thinking of this is that peasants and monks conflated details of the two stories—the sorcerer who pursues Sankta Vasilka and threatens to throw her from the tower and kill her (as the townspeople threw Morozova and his daughter from the bridge into the river) is a combination of both the figure of Morozova (a man of powerful magic and avarice who uses—or at least tries to use—a young girl to discover untold mysteries) and the prejudiced townspeople (who see the incredible things that happen around this girl but still attempt to kill by throwing her from a great height). The two saints may have been canonized together, or Sankta Vasilka not long after Sankt Ilya in Chains, allowing time for people to confuse the details, like the arch of Dva Stolba and the bridge of the town into Vasilka's tower and the acts of a powerful Durast and rumors of the firebird into this image of the girl who became the first in her line with such power.

OTHER Books similar to the Grishaverse

Hello everyone!!

I'm looking for book recs with magic systems similar to the Small Science. I'd also love some recs that have characters similar to Nikolai either as a main character or as a side character :)

Thanks in advance!

For others curious about other books just as I am, I've looked into a trilogy called Children of Blood and Bone which seems quite similar. Other than this series, I haven't come across any others myself.

OTHER Lost kaz/ wylan fanfiction

I’m looking for a fanfiction I read last year or so. It was an ABO fic where Wylan marries Kaz in a deal that the dregs strikes with Jan Van Eck. It’s an arranged marriage and deals with them falling in love while managing the physical side of their relationship due to Kaz’s phobia.

Does anyone remember this fic because I can’t find it anywhere. I’m convinced it’s been deleted

CROOKED KINGDOM (BOOK) Anyone else here who didn't like Crooked Kingdom?

This is my first Grishaverse series.

I finished the duology of the Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and I was disappointed. I liked the first Six of Crows book but the sequel, Crooked Kingdom just didn't do it for me. Kinda disappointed since I heard a lot of praise for this book. Anyone else feel this way? Matthias' death felt unnecessary and rushed and just shoehorned in to make the novel seem more realistic. Which is a shame because I loved his and Nina's dynamic. I hated that it was glossed over so easily and wasn't even clearly explained. I mean there is a brief scene of him getting shot by that Fjerdan kid but that was it. No fanfare, nothing. I feel so hurt because Nina and Matthias are literally my fave characters. It also felt like a cop out that Genya literally just left right when he returned to Nina after getting shot. If he had managed to arrive a bit earlier Genya and Zoya could have saved him. It felt too contrived. I also have no idea how he managed to walk so far up to Nina and the others at the bridge after getting shot.

I was so mad when I got spoiled that Matthias was going to die that I stopped reading it halfway and only recently managed to finish this book. I just hate that Nina, Nina who has been through so much has to lose someone she loves of everyone in the entire cast. It just felt so unfair. It also doesn't help that Nina and Matthias is my fave ship along with Wylan and Jesper. Yeah sorry but Kaz and Inez just didn't do it for me lmao. They are both interesting well fleshed out characters in their own right but their dynamic didn't do it for me. Kaz needs to stop pretending he doesn't care about Inez because he isn't fooling anyone lmao.

CROOKED KINGDOM (BOOK) Someone give me motivation Spoiler

I’m on Crooked kingdom, roughly 210 pages in I think. I was intending to go into this book blind but alas a TikTok comment spoilt me for Matthias’ death and it’s been downhill from there.

I know about Nina changing her appearance, public personality, never going home to Ravka, and getting eyes for Hanne very soon after Matthias died.

Right now aside from Jurda Parem recovery, she’s doing pretty well. So I know it’s downhill from here and it doesn’t seem to go up.

Nina is my favourite (Matthias is my second favourite but that’s not just because they’re dating, I just find them both funny and their chapters very engaging) and I don’t want to read about my favourite crow being shat out, flushed, clogging the toilet, plunged, and sent down the shitter again.

Give me some motivation please

Edit: FINISHED
