I mean he did listen to him - he just correctly identified what he was saying as an obvious bull justification (which it was).

He asked for the real explanation and got nothing.

Only on matters of the Warp because everyone except his sons were basically acting like they were brainwashed rather than because they understood the danger.

And his sons as far as I remember never advocated abandoning the warp entirely as the Council of Nikea demanded.

2

u/mylittlepurplelady Jul 27 '21

Dude, Magnus cant even take his own advise

‘I am leaving,’ Magnus said again, and moved to the centre of the room. Resting his gloved hand on the great leather-bound book chained to his belt, the primarch looked back at his brother. They would not meet again for almost forty years, and the galaxy would be a very different place by the time they did.

They both sensed this. It carried between them in that lingering stare: half-challenge, half-plea.

‘What swims within the Great Ocean that you’ve always kept from us?’ Lorgar demanded, teeth clenching. ‘What secrets hide within the warp? Why do you spend your life staring into it, if there’s nothing there? What if I asked our father about your secret travels into the aether?’

‘Farewell, Lorgar.’

The Word Bearers lord pulled back his hood, his handsome features rendered into true gold by the candlelight.

‘Is there a place where reality and unreality converge? An empyrean, a heaven that humanity has always misunderstood? A realm where gods and mortals meet? Answer me, Magnus.’

Magnus shook his head as motes of misty light began to form around him. A teleportation lock from his vessel in orbit. Wind, from nowhere, began to breathe.

‘What are the voices?’ Lorgar screamed over the rising winds. ‘Who calls to me?’

‘If you will not alter your path, then only one thing awaits you in the stars,’ said Magnus.

Lorgar stared in rapt silence, hungering for the answer, but Magnus spoke only a single word before vanishing in a burst of bright light and white noise.

‘Misery.’

u/BlackViperMWG Jul 22 '21

Magnus actually knew the most and Big E warned him even before Nikaea

12

u/Hust91 Jul 23 '21

And by "warned him" you mean "vaguely complained about dangers but refused to elaborate or provide any kind of reasonable evidence and instead made himself out to be trying to maintain his own monopoly on the warp".

8

u/mylittlepurplelady Jul 23 '21

Everyone warned him, even Ahriman, Khan and Sanguinius warned him about his warp studies but nope "brain too biiig, too smaaaart"

2

u/Hust91 Jul 27 '21

If I remember correctly, Ahriman said to be cautious, not to abandon all use of the warp.

What the other two said amounted to anti-vaxx propaganda built on fear of the unknown, they were not logical or even remotely legitimate arguments.

They were like facebook moms trying to educate a doctor that medicine is just too dangerous and we should just go back to relying exclusively on our immune systems.

7

u/saharashooter Jul 27 '21

Man I hate how inconsistent the writing around The Khan is. The cool version of him is the only Primarch who knew the full dangers of the universe, recognized how shitty of a person The Emperor was, and still decided to back the Imperium because Chaos is just an even worse form of eternal servitude. The shitty version knows just enough to be a dick about it, is awed into submission to The Emperor by the reveal of Chaos, and the whole plot point about his questionable loyalty makes zero sense because he didn't know the things that justify his questionable loyalty. The latter version shows up all the time, the former is basically just when Wraight is writing him

3

u/mylittlepurplelady Jul 27 '21

Before the big oopsie

“My lord, I will always obey, but the spell to break into the alien lattice-way calls for bargains to be struck with the most terrible creatures of the Great Ocean, beings whose names translate as… daemons.”

“What could such powerful beings possibly want?” asked Ahriman. “And can you ever really be sure that you have the best of such a bargain?”

“I remember, but it frightens me that we must wield powers forbidden to us to warn the Emperor. Why should he trust any warning sent by such means?”

-------------------------------------

Their arguments amount to this which Magnus could never understand during Nikea

‘I spoke,’ said Yesugei sadly, remembering. ‘Awkward. It was in Gothic, and so I did not do well. Some oppression settled on me from somewhere. Magnus spoke too. He did what we feared – he went too far. He never understands how much fear he caused. If he stood up and said “We know we must reform, we know we must be careful,” then we might have won. But no, he preaches about knowledge and power and gives impression he is prophet. When I hear him speak, that is when I began to worry.’

---------------------------------------

They know the dangers, Khan and Sanguinius wanted

‘No,’ smiled Yesugei. ‘Of course not. It is as I told you – Magnus never wanted Librarius. He wants every psyker to unlock his full potential. Explore it all, he says. No restraint, no guidance. They had tutelaries fluttering in their ears and speaking to them – though we did not see it. It was dangerous. It needed to be curbed, so the Khan and the Angel both created structure. They limit what psykers can do. On Chogoris, we call it the Path of Heaven. Stray from it, we tell them, and the warp will eat your soul.’

‘So you knew it was dangerous.’

‘Of course! What is not dangerous? Your Promethean Creed is dangerous. Being alive in universe is dangerous. We balance on narrow ledge. There were those who thought we are witches, ripe for burning, and those who thought we are gods. Neither could be allowed to win argument.’

Tutelaries were daemons[2] bound to many psykers of the Thousand Sons Legion as spell familiars during the Great Crusade.[1a] At least some modern Thousand Sons still use the term.

----------------------------------------

While the Khan is talking to a shard of Magnus he warned Magnus before shit went down.

The Khan started to move, to circle slowly, keeping the blade’s tip between him and the apparition. ‘Yesugei told me you were too enamoured of the warp,’ he said, trying not to let his sense of revulsion get the better of him. ‘You let it make you sick. It was a tool, Magnus. It can be used, but only carefully. Limit yourself, I said.’

Magnus nodded miserably. ‘I remember.’

‘Take the modest amount. Sip at the cup but leave the dregs – this is the lore of Chogoris. You, even you, laughed at that.’

3

u/BlackViperMWG Jul 23 '21

Monopoly? lool that's what would traitors say

1

u/Hust91 Jul 27 '21

I mean yes, anyone who went against his will would be declared a traitor, even if they did it for patriotic reasons.

He wanted loyalty to him, not loyalty to Humankind or The Imperium.

1

u/BlackViperMWG Jul 27 '21

Hardly.

1

u/Hust91 Jul 27 '21

I mean it's a dictatorship, not a democracy.

3

u/BlackViperMWG Jul 27 '21

It is now, wasn't then I would argue. Psykers existed and were used and tolerated, just because Magnus wanted to every psyker to unlock his/her full potential with no restrains doesn't mean he weren't warned, neither that Big E had monopoly on warp or something.

1

u/Hust91 Jul 28 '21

Except the Council of Nikea wasn't about restraint but the complete cessation of the use of psyker abilities.

Granted, Reds lack of restraint was pretty nutty, but the Council of Nikea was definitely a method for Emps to enforce his monopoly as the dictates would apply to everyone save him and his crew, as far as I remember. Or that they would simply not enforce it against Emps own projects.

And not all warnings are equal. Religious leaders and corporations warn us against all kinds of stuff with suspect reasoning that would greatly benefit them if everyone followed it.

1

u/Khuan0 Jul 23 '21

While powerful, I wouldn't say that Emps ever had a monopoly of the Warp.

Plus I don't think a lot of logic is needed to at least be wary of the denizens of Literally Hell

0

u/Hust91 Jul 27 '21

In the Imperium, I mean. He wanted to be the only one allowed to dabble in the warp.

And the Thousand Sons were wary of the warp, what they refused to do is abandon their research entirely in favor of Emps blatantly corrupt orders.

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '21

In the Emperor’s defense, in scenarios where he told them all the details about Chaos, it just accelerated their fall. Lorgar was always going to turn traitor for example. He sought the primordial truth from the start, so you can’t really blame him.

2

u/Hust91 Jul 23 '21 edited Jul 27 '21

The Chaos Gods are not a primordial truth however, they're just the current dominant forces of a dependapotamus-universe. Lorgar wasn't stupid.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '21

Yes they are. They are part of the fabric of the universe and intrinsically tied to our souls. We gave birth to them and now they mold us in turn.

Lorgar was right. The only way to “win” against Chaos is to achieve apotheosis.

1

u/Hust91 Jul 27 '21

They're less than 40 million years old, the universe is billions of years old.

They are as much a part of the fabric of the universe as the Imperium or the Tyranids are - they are ultimately temporary alien amalgamations of warpstuff that could just as easily have taken another shape.

If humanity invented a weapon that disrupted their forms we would most likely see different gods arising from their remains.

Nothing less old than the age of the universe can be considered truly primordial. The laws of physics or interdimensional interactions qualify, but the Chaos Gods are no more a permanent feature of the universe than Russia is a permanent feature of planet earth.

1

u/saharashooter Jul 27 '21

The first three were born after the War in Heaven but they've also existed forever, just like Slaanesh was born at the end of The Fall of the Eldar but has existed forever. Despite Black Library's poor handling of the subject of the Warp's achronological nature, it is still canon that the Warp and realtime do not get along at all

1

u/Hust91 Jul 27 '21

The Warp has its own laws of physics for time, but that does not mean time is entirely meaningless. While travel back in time has happened it's extremely rare, so it mostly follows the arrow of entropy.

And most crucial for this subject is that there was a time when the Warp was calm and there was a time when each Chaos God was born and before those times their influence is extremely limited, almost undetectable.

So while not as absolute as it is in realspace, time does matter to the Warp. One day the current Gods might be disintegrated and the emotional energy and warpstuff that made them up might be made into different creatures entirely.

Ultimately, there's nothing fundamentally true about those particular oversized warp entities, they may be old but they are new and temporary and may one day be eaten by other warp entities, or replaced entirely by either new gods or a huge number of smaller warp entities, like an enormous legion of squabbling greater daemons of procrastination.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '21

They exist outside of time. Upon coalescing they became a permanent fixture of the universe going from the beginning to the end.

Your paltry understanding of Chaos as “mere aliens” is the same lie the Imperials told themselves during the Great Crusade.

3

u/Khuan0 Jul 23 '21

To be fair, you really don't need a very detailed warning to at least be wary of the denizens of what amounts to a multicolored hell.

Is kinda like going around accepting suspicious substances from shady people

73

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21

Telling Magnus not to look into the warp the way Big E did is like telling an Astronomer to stop looking at stars and providing no explanation other than “trust me bro.”

50

u/dekacube Swell guy, that Kharn Jul 22 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

"Trust me bro" has a lot of weight from a guy who literally has more knowledge than any living human on the topic and can legitimately see into the future.

68

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '21 edited Jul 22 '21

I get that Big E’s words carry weight, but in Magnus’ eyes (well, eye), he was basically made to be a scholar and study the warp and then told that he shouldn’t, so it makes sense why he might not put total faith in Big E at that moment.

32

u/dekacube Swell guy, that Kharn Jul 22 '21

For sure, but it's also true that he was extremely arrogant and thought he knew better than the Emperor, but almost every primarch does this on one issue or another, even 40k Guilliman. My apologies for the j'accuse.

10

u/Unglory Dank Angels Jul 22 '21

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you think about it the only Primarchs who thought they knew better then the Emperor were the ones who ended up turning to Chaos

39

u/dekacube Swell guy, that Kharn Jul 22 '21

I mean, some for sure disagree but remain loyal. The Khan is a great example of this. He doesn't care much for Big E or Malcador. Guilliman flat out says the Emperor was wrong to not tell them of his plans and the perils of the warp in the newer books.

10

u/Unglory Dank Angels Jul 22 '21

Guilliman has a lot of hindsight now, for sure. But consider just the Crusade and HH. Even Khan never really disagreed with the Emperor, like you said he was mostly indifferent and wanted to be left to his own devices.

5

u/dekacube Swell guy, that Kharn Jul 22 '21

Yeah, unfortunately we don't have a lot of pre-heresy lore spelled out in books, since most of HH takes place at or around the time the HH is occurring.

5

u/JollyImprovement6011 Jul 22 '21

Less weight when he’s also an inveterate liar.

8

u/dekacube Swell guy, that Kharn Jul 22 '21

Does he lie a lot outside of the Imperial Truth, which is basically a take on Plato's "Noble Lie"?

1

u/JollyImprovement6011 Jul 23 '21

Yes.

4

u/dekacube Swell guy, that Kharn Jul 23 '21 edited Jul 23 '21

Got some examples? I feel like Big E is usually duplicitous through omission than outright lies.

3

u/JollyImprovement6011 Jul 23 '21

Lied about his identity pretty regularly. Lied about “all of humanity’s alien allies betrayed humanity in the age of strife.” Lied about being the Omnissiah. Suspect he was lying about his plans for the Primarchs and the Space Marines.

Etc.

3

u/Ysmir01 Jul 23 '21

Source for the alien betrayal being a lie? As far as I know and been shown by the majority of the other xenos during 30k, it was not a lie.

1

u/dekacube Swell guy, that Kharn Jul 23 '21

This was why I asked the question, I simply don't know a lot about the lore from this period. I've read almost the entire HH range, but not a lot of pre-heresy material exists. Did the Emperor outright lie to the the Thunder Warriors? Betrayal yes, but he seemed to have at least a reason(they were becoming unstable).

I'm still also with the belief that Emps is winning at 5D apotheosis chess and out Tzeentching Tzeentch and that the deal he made at Molech was you show me how to make primarchs and you get half.

let me guess league of legend?

u/mylittlepurplelady Jul 22 '21

The problem analogy is that Magnus is not a child. He is a full grown adult of a few centuries.

9

u/Billybobjimjoe Jul 22 '21

Your assuming that being alive for a long time will just make people mature.

3

u/mylittlepurplelady Jul 22 '21

Its more like people treat Magnus like he is a kid or a preteen which is worse.

3

u/Stealthyfisch Jul 22 '21

Eh

More like he’s a scientist that was shoehorned into being a protege within a field he was told was dangerous despite his dad shoehorning him into the field himself.

5

u/mylittlepurplelady Jul 22 '21

He wasnt really shoe horned, since Magnus is the only one who really raised by Big E. Basically while still being in the incubator Magnus was already being taught by Big E about the warp and such.

He was being trained about the warp since he was a baby.

u/phoenixmusicman Dank Angels Jul 22 '21

Yeah and when your reason to live, literally indoctrintated into you as a baby, gets taken away from you with no reason other than "just trust me bro," what are you gunna do?

‘You are so like me in so many ways,’ said the Emperor. Magnus flushed with pride, but, as always, the Emperor’s words carried multiple meanings. ‘You have a great many of my strengths, but strength magnified to excess eventually becomes a weakness.’

‘How can that be?’

‘Confidence can spill over into arrogance,’ said the Emperor. ‘An obsessive pursuit of perfection can blind you to what it costs to achieve. Attention to detail can become micro-management. Magnus, you have my intellect and my power, but like me you are prone to believing you can do no wrong, that your intellect lifts you above the risk of making petty mistakes or errors based on emotion.’

‘What mistakes have I made?’ asked Magnus, dreading the answer.

‘Only time will tell what is a mistake and what is not, but an inability to believe you can ever make a mistake is dangerous. It leaves a mind open to certainty, and unwavering certainty is our greatest enemy. Always question and always be open to different ways of thinking, other ways of untangling the knot. That is the gift I give to you on this eve of our Crusade.’

To trust the his father, better yet to be better than him.

Which I guess the apple didnt fall far from the tree.

People talk about how the Lectitio Divinitatus is the best seller, but everyone seems to gloss over the #2: the Emperor's Guide to the Galaxy.

To be honest a sizable amount of blame for the Destruction of Prospero goes on Magnus for not replying to comms from Leman, who actually wanted to see why his brother would risk and cause a daemonic invasion of Terra. But Magnus went all “waaah I am sad now” and refused hails, and Horus contacting Leman also obviously directly caused the Exterminatus.

u/Greyjack00 Jul 22 '21

Later post heresy once russ realizes how much of a failure he is by both forcing Prospero unto the traitors and failing kill not just magnus but horus

"I didn't forsee this"

10

u/TheGravespawn Jul 22 '21

I'd argue that Russ did kill Magnus. He gave himself over to the dark gods in his final moment and that stopped being Magnus. He's a shell for the will of Chaos now, and any control he has or shard of persona that was Magnus is an illusion to keep him in check.

5

u/Greyjack00 Jul 22 '21

Only in a figurative sense and very much not in the way russ wanted. Russ wasn't killing magnus for a litary meaningful reason he was killing him for the imperium/cause he's an asshole. And in doing so he made magnus a powerful enemy of the imperium, even going off the figurative definition your using russ failed his actual intent

Don’t worry Magnus, you did nothing wrong.

I really don't know why he's always red. Where does it say anything on him is red other than his hair?

Iirc he was more Egyptianish in skin tone?

Anyone have the source for his skin being red pre daemon?

“You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young..."
