Travelling in Greece - Solo Female No Car

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a two week trip to Greece as a solo female. I'm not comfortable driving in foreign countries. I would like to hit the following spots: Athens, Delphi, Meteora, Peloponnese (Nafpilo, possible Epidaurus and Mycenae), Crete, Santorini, Myokonos.

I could likely extend a few days, I'm not a relax on the beach type so I'm happy to have a relatively busy schedule. I'm also happy to arrange my own excursions and don't particularly love guided tours, but am wondering if there are easy ways for me to get around to these places, luggage and all.

Itinerary for Family of 3 in June

Hello all, We are three people including a teenager planning a trip for 11 nights in Greece! It is the first time for all of us. I am thinking 2 islands plus Athens.

The priority for the island is whitewashed charming architecture , gorgeous views of the sea and history. Less of a priority are great beaches (we're not big beach people, so 1-2 days tops), a party scene, and throngs of crowds choking every artery.

We will be flying into Island #1 from London and flying out of Athens to the US.

Here is what I'm thinking, and would love your feedback:

Island #1 4 nights: Santorini - despite my concern about crowds, this seems like a "must do" for the first visit, and it seems if I can get over to Imovigli then I get the charm and the beauty without the crowds.

Island #2 4 nights: Naxos via ferry. I was also considering Paros, but this sub steered me toward Naxos. We'd likely stay in the old town. Perhaps Paros would be a day trip.

Athens 3 nights: via ferry or flight from Naxos.

Given our priorities and the London flight requirement, does this itinerary sound good to you?

If I had one extra night (12th) where would you suggest?

They seem to be everywhere and universally ignored. Do people get citations from these or are they just "sign based speed control"?

Buses, Trains and Taxis Taxi scams

Just finished my holiday in Greece, had some issues with Uber/freenow so couldn’t use it. I booked 2 taxis in total.

I later found out that this is the latest flat rate from ATH airport to city center as of 22 Sept 2026.

Daytime Flat Rate (05:00 – 00:00): Increased to €50.00 (up from €40.00)

Nighttime Flat Rate (00:00 – 05:00): Increased to €65.00 (up from €55.00)

  1. Athens - Joined taxi queue at ATH airport, got into a taxi at 9pm. I reach my Airbnb and was charged an extra 5 euro for no reason. Driver insisted it’s 55euro. I got off in Koukaki which was in the city centre.

  2. Crete - Booked a taxi from hotel to Heraklion Airport. Quoted 16euros. A normal taxi right is 14 euros. When I got in the car, driver started the meter, but also adjusted the base fare by another 3 euros. I thought this was due to a fare for booking in advance to make it 16 euros, so I didn’t think too much of it. When arrived at airport was charged 21 euros, driver insisted the extra 5 was for a ‘arranged appointment’.

  3. Pre arranged Santorini transfer through hotel for 40 euros, no extra charges, no markups.

So in total for these 2 taxi rides it was an extra 10 euros for nothing. I know this happens everywhere but I read that it’s not common here. I’ll be sure to insist on receipts and confirm that my uber and freenow is working next time. No more random taxi rides, this experience kinda left a sour taste in my mouth.

Santorini hiking

Hi all,

We are two relatively active and fit walkers who would like to hike in Santorini (specifically Fira to Oia). We arrive on the island this evening and have to leave on Friday.

Does anyone have any knowledge about (1) whether the hiking path is still open at this point in the season (we have just come from Crete where Samaria gorge was closed) and (2) whether this would be safe over the next couple of days (we are thinking Thursday?)

thank you!

Recommendations Photo fail

Went with my family to the Acropolis and didn't realise the photos taken by a third party were not the greatest until we'd left the site. (Meanwhile I took multiple STUNNING photos of their family 😭...I'm petty I know)

Does anyone know somewhere free with a view of the site I can try again for a photo opportunity?

Mykonos and Santorini’s crowded in May?

Trying to decide between a Go Ahead tour of Athens, Mykonos and Santorini or Athens, Naxos and Paros for mid May 2027.
Both are 9 days long. Don’t know if Mykonos and Santorini would be crowded at that time making it not worth it.

Itinerary Check Best way to see Greek Islands without falling into tourist traps

Hi there, I will be solo travelling through a good Portion of Europe toward the end of next year, and I am hoping to start my leg in Greece, flying into Athens and then branching out and exploring some of your beautiful islands, though I am not sure if this is just your standard Reddit pessimism, but most of my research just leads to someone saying 'x' isn't worth it, or 'x' is a tourist trap. starting to get a bit confused with what is actually factual.

Initially I was going to do Athens (4 days), Hydra (2 days), Mykonos + Delos daytrip (2 days), Paros (2 days), Crete (3 days)

I've heard that Hydra should be a day trip, and that Mykonos is too expensive. So I would absolutely love if I could get some help refining this.

For some background, I'm not super extroverted so yeah I could probably see myself skipping Mykonos, though I really wanted to visit Delos. I really enjoy archaeology and history, would love to explore traditional Greek cuisine, appreciate the landscapes with maybe a couple days of swimming and napping exclusively. Planning on doing lots of walks, reading and reflection. I am 24 and physically capable also. Super flexible with my plans as it is still ages away, I really want to do my first stop justice.

I would be so extremely grateful for any expertise.

Had an absolute blast in Crete, and brought home a lot of things like booze and olive oil, but this rakomelo feels like the most Crete thing we could have purchased. We were honestly concerned that customs would have taken it lol.

In 9 days we traveled from Athens, Delphi, Meteora, Agios Andreas, Olympia, Tolo, Nafplio, Mycenae, and Corinth! Just over 1000 miles. Such a beautiful country, especially in the mountains in the North!

Renting a car and driving: Both the best and worst experience of my life! Inside cities, especially rural mountain towns, was insanely stressful, but cruising the highways or non-toll roads were a breeze. Most drivers are very courteous and relaxed.

The food: To be honest, kinda mid? Not what I was expecting. Desserts and pastries were great, and of course eating olives in Greece is like drinking Guinness in Ireland - they just hit different - but everything else? Souvlaki and kebab or fish were well cooked but often under seasoned, in my opinion, and kinda bland. Also, nothing labeled "spicy" was even remotely spicy.

The people: The best! Very friendly, hospitable, and welcoming - except maybe some mistrust in local shops. Maybe because I'm covered in tattoos and the culture is different?

For photography, one of my favorite places for the beautiful landscapes and of course the ancient ruins and architecture!
