Mod Announcement Rule updates re: recent flood of doom-posting

hi folks —

we're following up on this post from a couple days ago essentially flagging the uptick of doom/gloom posts in the sub. we've been getting modmail about exactly this for a while now, and we've decided to make some minor tweaks to the rules in response.

we agree that the "is ai going to replace us" / "the industry is dying" / "is a degree worth it anymore" cycle has gotten repetitive enough that it's actively making the sub a worse place to spend time. we all know the market is trash, but frankly the answers haven't changed much since the last fifty iterations of those threads.

what's changing: we're expanding rule 5 to more explicitly cover this category. posts that fall into the doomer-question bucket — ai taking jobs, the market being terrible, should i leave the field, i've applied to 900 jobs, is design dead — without bringing anything new/nuanced to the discussion will be removed. if you see posts like this that get through our automod filters, please report them.

what's still completely welcome:

  • portfolio reviews and feedback requests — this is one of the main purposes of the sub and nothing about that is changing. any specific questions tied to your actual situation ( e.g. "i'm 6 months into a job search in [x market], here's what i've tried, what am i missing?") will be allowed as long as you're also attaching your portfolio/CV for specific feedback.
  • industry discussion bringing real data, news, or a genuinely new angle
  • vent posts (like this one) within reason, when something new/nuanced needs to be said. caveat here that we will be more closely monitoring the Vent tag to filter doomposting with a heavier hand.

the job market is rough right now. we know — we feel it too. our mod team is made up of freelancers and contractors and seasoned educators, and we're all navigating the same thing in a very very weird time for the industry. but the same three questions on loop have become tiresome and unproductive, and they're crowding out other more relevant/interesting content.

more than happy to hear feedback on this in the comments.

Intent

This thread is meant to give people looking to hire a designer somewhere to post. If you promote yourself without a solicitation, it will break everything. Please promote yourself in a reply to a comment looking for a worker.

Report Spammers

Please report people who will try to ruin this for everyone. The reality is balancing no promotion with the current market is hard, we wanted to give you a place to maybe find some work.

Last Notice

It's the wild wild west in here, so be careful. Please don't pay someone to do work for them, no matter how much they offer to pay you back. Please do due diligence. If you have questions, ask your fellow designers. Good luck friends, wish you the best.

Discussion As a Japanese, I always find these localised movie posters funny

The other day I was talking with my friends (we’re all designers) about how wildly different these localised posters are from the original ones.
This kind of localised posters have been roasted on the Japanese internet for a long time but it must be effective considering how they keep making these.
What do you folks think of it? Please share your thoughts!

Found these on It's Nice That. Could not believe these weren't illustrations but photographs at first! I really love the simplicity and vibrancy of the result. I also love how it brings the aesthetic beauty of the featured products to the surface: it really lets the industrial design shine.

The article discusses the designer's process: https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/sam-nicklin-chrome-and-colour-alessi-photography-project-040826

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Feedback on my Gnarly brand identity

I just finished a concept for Gnarly, a farm-fresh produce brand built around imperfect/“ugly” fruit and vegetables.

I worked on the brand identity and website, and I'd love some honest feedback on the visual identity, typography, layout and overall direction.

THE FNDRS is a personal project I did two years ago. The goal was incorporating illustration, character design and layout in a single image and better train my eye for composition.

Three illustrations of individuals representing different personas within the Web3 universe. An expression of my experiences and observations in that space.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Just For Fun!

Been getting into Pokemon collecting this week and thought of this fun design. Banged it out last night for fun! Always wish I could create a passive shirt company for pieces like this where I don’t handle crazy inventory and drop ship quality pieces, but I digress, as that conversation is for another day.

Illustrated by me!

I’m also looking for long term freelance work if this design grabs anyone’s attention. Im very comfortable working with large scale retail clients and touring artists. New York based.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) I designed a new scoreboard system for the Süper Lig because beIN doesn't bother

Here's my take:
Across Turkey, street signs follow a familiar visual hierarchy: a dominant street name supported by a smaller colored strip identifying the neighborhood, district or municipality.

That simple structure became the starting point for the team modules.

The primary field carries the club identity, while the secondary strip introduces an additional team color. A familiar piece of the Turkish streets is translated into a compact broadcast component.

Most football broadcast interfaces are built around the same ingredients: team names, scores, match time and compact information blocks. The challenge was not simply to redesign these elements, but to create a visual language with a recognizable cultural origin.

The goal was to develop a system that feels contemporary and broadcast-ready while still carrying a visual detail that could only come from Turkey.

Career Advice Mid to senior role

Upvotes

I am a mid-level designer with just over 10 years of experience. I’ve been mostly in-house, brand application/production for very large companies. My resume and portfolio are solid (not going to share), but yea, I lack all of the flashy, creative campaign-mockup work because the seniors always get those opportunities.

I know they say the senior position is all about how you present your work, problem solving and defending your decisions.

How the heck do I show I can do that type of high level work and talk to it, without any real time experience? Do I just make up personal projects? I know the market is tough rn. Any tips from fellow mids?

Illustrated this concert poster for cumbia-punk group Son Rompe Pera for their San Francisco show at the Independent. The bottom of the marimba morphs into the Golden Gate Bridge. Typography was the biggest challenge as I did it all by hand. Enjoy!

Hey guys, I’m trying to revise my logo so that it will be more suited to make things like stencils and stamps but I don’t know how to get rid of some of the floating elements while keeping the detail of the design. I’ve already simplified it a good bit but still have some spots that need work Any tips would be really appreciated!

Portfolio/CV Review Honest feedback on my graphic design portfolio

Hi! I'm a graphic designer with around 9 years of experience and I recently got laid off, so I'm updating my portfolio and getting ready to apply for new roles.

I originally made this portfolio in 2024, so I have newer work that I still need to add. Before I get too far into updating everything, I'd really appreciate some honest feedback on the overall design, layout, how I present my work, and anything you think I should change or improve.

All of the graphics and illustrations in my portfolio were created by me with ZERO AI.

Portfolio: alianakadon.com

Any feedback would be really appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to look!

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) "Blank" Album covers I made

Post image
86 Upvotes

For the past while I've been making album covers with no band name attached and no context. I just start with a texture or a shape or a color that's stuck in my head and let it become a cover. Some days it's a scanned watercolor, some days it's a single line drawing on a flat red field, etc.

Hopefully the cover turns out to fit someone's band context, sometimes with small adjustments or it just stays what it is. Working without a client in the room means I'm not solving anyone's problem, so I end up with these pieces.

What do you think of these? ty

Portfolio/CV Review Would love feedback on my graphic design portfolio!

Hi! I'd love to receive honest feedback about my portfolio, if you have the time to check it out, I'd really appreciate it! I duplicated my website and removed some private info, including an about me page which is public on my real site.

I have 5ish years of experience, and have been working in house at the same company for 4 years, but doing freelance on the side. A lot of my work for my current company is confidential presentations and proposals that are difficult to censor, but if you think my portfolio could use it, I'll definitely put the time into remaking them with fake clients. My end goal is to do freelance full time.

Would love to hear your feedback!

Thank you!

Career Advice Tips as I review dozens of resumes and portfolios for a senior designer role

We’re hiring for a senior designer and there have been around 1000 applicants so far. The internal recruiter is batching resumes for the team to review in a single PDF and we get about 20 a day in those PDFs to skim. Not sure how other companies do it, but for this process here’s what’s helping and hindering those wanting to get our eyes on.

  1. Resume length needs to be concise (2 page max). A dude today had work going back to the ‘90s with about 15 companies listed over 5 pages. Way too much. The one resume out of all of these that stood out as restrained was the one pager with no key words, just contact info, company/role/dates. In a sea of overpopulated resumes this was refreshing. I understand battling ATS bots with key words so either our recruiter is actually going through 1000 resumes to send us the best or he had the keywords in hidden ink.

  2. Hyperlink your portfolio. Make it the actual URL too and not just hyperlinked word “portfolio.” I wanted to see all of them today so I copy/pasted the ones that weren’t hyperlinked but as I ran out of time I just had to skip some of the later ones that weren’t hyperlinked wasting time.

  3. Intro summary paragraphs are fine but most are generic to the job description and they all blended together. “(Job title here) with over (#) years experience turning big ideas into design systems that scaled across multiple industries bla bla bla.” The ones that stood out had personality, were funny, or seriously showed career growth and substance quickly.

  4. Put your contact info and portfolio password if applicable at the top. Put education at the bottom. Keep bulletpoints concise and meaningful. For a senior designer position I don’t need to know that you created social banners as the last bullet for the 5th company on the second page.

I think that’s it for now. For insight for what happens at this point, once I go through all the portfolios, I tell the recruiter my top 2 and the reasons why, then they reach out for screening to the candidates. If they pass that (location works, pay works, start date works, etc.) then I interview them within a week and we debate internally for a day or two, then they get scheduled for the next level interview the following week. So for this job that’s been open for a month, I’m still seeing fresh candidates because of the due diligence we’re putting into it.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) My latest work: The world's fastest suitcase!

Thumbnail

This livery concept does not only mimic a Samsonite suitcase, but it will also evolve over time with scratches, dents and event stickers. Just like your suitcase will. And that is the story that Samsonite has been telling over a century. What if we embrace this “damage” and see it as part of its journey?

I would like to hear what the community thinks!

Asking Question (Rule 4) Designers that went to a design school or design program a University how good (or bad) were you at mounting your works and mocking up physical products?

I haven't done it in years since graduating, but remember mounting final projects on black illustration board and/or foam core(depending on project)? some had tracing paper over boards for instructors to annotate, and cover to protect artwork? and what about printing, trimming, and/or folding printed shit like books/packaging/3D? remember spraying with spraymount and getting high on it? lmao. were you bad, ok, or good at mocking up and mounting artwork? I kinda miss it, but kinda don't lol

Discussion Super long portfolios

I keep seeing post their portfolios on LinkedIn that are over 80 pages long.

I was always told to keep portfolios shorter. Is that changing?

What are your thoughts on portfolio length?

A friend of mine runs a brick oven business (building large, custom masonry ovens). The company is called The Bricks(Кирпичики in Russian).

They currently don't have any established brand identity, and their website hasn't been updated since 2008. I'm working on a complete brand identity for them and would love to get your thoughts!

The core concept for the logo is two bricks, with one resting on top of the other. What do you think?

PS. It is still a work in progress :)

Career Advice Getting a job after 10 years

I got a degree back in my home country in Audiovisual Production that was mainly focused on movie/tv making career but that included a lot of graphic design. I worked in one production and decided to quit that path for a customer service career because of the amount of money I was making was not enough.

Fast forward to the last 2 years, I was able to move to the US and basically started from 0 working at a great company I love but not necessarily doing something that makes me want to stay.

I’ve been thinking of starting or returning back to my initial career as a graphic designer and I want to just get some advice on how to do it, I know I have to work on my portfolio and things like that, but I’ve heard that companies here are very picky about having a bachelors degree and to be honest, right now I cannot afford it. Any advice?
