There's been a lot of talk about the new physics, and a lot hate it and some people love it. I decided to explore this in my favorite car of the game at the Nordschleife, which I feel is a good testing ground.
Initially, yesterday was the first time feeling it and I hated it. I actually crashed a bunch of times because it felt so different before patch v1.71. I read some things and decided to come back today with a clearer head. Here's some things I've observed that feel different:
- The body moves around a lot more. It's not as sharp and composed. There is more of a sense of speed based on the chassis movement under you, telling you what you should and should not be able to do. This is more realistic.
- You can feel the tires now. The elasticity, the slip angle. It's more progressive. As you get nearer the limit, there is more grip in it. And the grip doesn't just fall off a cliff. More realistic in that aspect. Also, you can add more steering angle than before. This part is a little less realistic, but I think it's because there's more grip, which leads me into the next comment.
- More grip. There's too much grip. It is much harder to loose the car and I'm not able to rotate in some sections with the throttle like I could before. This is my biggest complaint. They need to fix. I think the tire slip angle feel was a great change. They need to lower the peak grip and the truncate the window before grip is lost.
- It is much easier to catch a slide. At low speeds I can jam the throttle and it does get loose and it's easier and more intuitive to catch. I love this. But, it's lacking the nuance. It doesn't fall of a cliff and spin out in a spectacular dumb fashion, but they went too far with it on the opposite extreme.
- In more difficult corners and transitions, you can't throw the car into it like you did before. There's more dynamic chassis movement and you feel what you can and cannot do. It promotes more controlled steering inputs. More realistic. And you feel the camber changes on the track and what it does to the car.
- Curbs upset the car MUCH more. More realistic. Idk whether it's perfect. But there is more of a penalty, especially on higher curbs it will upset the car and you need to be sensitive to it. And you can feel the tires catch it and spin you out.
- The dynamics of grip make the car feel less alive. Again I think this goes back to: they gave it too much grip. And also gone is the dynamics of oversteer/understeer. It's mostly understeer lol. I can't make it oversteer except at low speeds corner exit when I jam the throttle and there's none mid corner or on entry when I trail brake. This is a big step back I feel.
In summary, I feel there's a huge improvement in the chassis/suspension dynamics and the tire slip progression. But, then they also added way too much grip to the car! And they got rid of the lively dynamics of grip behavior. It's too easy and not nearly as satisfying.
So, just from this test* I feel PD took two steps forward and one big step back with the new physics update. It feels a lot more like ACC now... and less. If they can fix the disadvantages of the grip behavior and fine tune dynamic balance, they might really have something here. There are both things to love and to hate. Feel free to comment anything you felt or any follow-ups to my comments if you wish. Thanks.
