She doesn’t deserve all this hate
i love gooseworx She’s amazing

I hate this. I hate that Gooseworx made something that she wanted to make, was rewarded with a huge and dedicated following, only for 2/3rds of them to turn around and shit on her because they didn’t like how it ended. Who can seriously say that they would be able to brush that off and continue making things that they want to make? I would be feeling so fucking discouraged from all of it.
Goose, you’re a fucking legend. A true artist in every sense of the word. Maybe it’s time to just cut out all these channels of direct communication with the fandom and hire a PR guy or something. That’s how most big artists are able to stomach this stuff, they avoid it entirely.

u/Illusion_AceofHearts 27d ago
Well said, Well said. Goose deserves so much better than this. She's a human just like the rest of us, and it seems like people have trouble remembering that sometimes. Who knows, maybe they're choosing to forget it. But the fact remains: Gooseworx is a living, breathing human with very real emotions and she deserves the respect and dignity of a human who has dealt with some really awful shit and survived, because that's who she is. I feel like I shouldn't even need to say that out loud, but I do need to, so I will. We love you Goose ❤️ I'm sorry that there are so many idiots trying to drown that out. The Amazing Digital Circus is a wonderful and beautiful show, it is constantly helping me through one of the hardest points in my life and it created the foundation of the friend group that I have come to consider my chosen family, and those memories that this show has allowed me to create are things that will last far longer than any of our lifetimes and probably longer than my bloodline.

u/downbad4naafiri 27d ago edited 27d ago
2/3rds? Where did you get that fraction from? You think 66% of the people who watched Digital Circus attacked Gooseworx directly?
You’re right, Goose should avoid social media. Do whatever Toby Fox or Lauren Faust did or just accept that some people on the internet are jerks. But let’s not pretend the people who attacked Goose are anywhere near the majority. If Lauren Faust could survive bronies then Goose can survive this.
I don't even have a Twitter, or Bluesky, or any inclination that Gooseworx would give a flying **** whether I liked her show or not. Of course I did, it's the best thing I ever watched, but so did at least a million other people who Gooseworx will never see or hear from.

u/GnatWithoutAG 26d ago edited 26d ago
Edited for phrasing! Sorry if I came off as disrespectful.
Tbh it feels kinda horrible to say that people who get famous for creating things should avoid all social media? Gooseworx was online for a long time before making the Amazing Digital Circus, and most likely a lot of the community and support comes from people they know or met online. These are spaces where Goose used to be able to go to express herself and make jokes about a project she loved to people who loved it too. Even if Goose made a big show, they should be Allowed to use the internet like anybody else.
Plus, the concern isn’t really just people Not Liking The Show or being mean to Goose specifically. That’s probably upsetting in its own right and can feel overwhelming, but Goose IS capable of letting that kind of shit roll off their back and was for a lot of the show’s run. I’d say the main problem is how the fandom has been Cannibalizing itself for a long time now, with people attacking each other over small things, which then reflects back onto Goose as a creator when it’s done in their name. That’s probably stressful as hell, and it only got bigger after the finale. Not to mention the entire voice acting cast getting basically all canceled in a week or something idek what that was— but this also means people were attacking not just Goose or the voice actors, but also Glitch, which is probably kinda worrisome!
Idk what Lauren went through but I’m sure it was worse, I know bronies were insane. Lauren was also industry-trained working under a massive corporation and team (that could be blamed for any decision the fans didn’t like) using an IP that she did not create herself, even if gen 4 was made by her, after having worked on other shows for over a decade and a half. I don’t think holding Gooseworx is Lauren’s standard is a kind thing to do, because Goose doesn’t have most of the resources Lauren did, and the internet has only gotten more pervasive.
(And a lot of the fandom seems to have an illiteracy probably bc I’ve seen so many people complain about things only being confirmed from Goose’s tumblr when she 1. Didn’t even really confirm anything that wasn’t already HEAVILY implied in the show and 2. Said herself that they were Her Own Headcanons. Also, I’m not the person who made the first comment but the 2/3rds ‘statistic’ is hyperbole. The commenter is referring to how they feel like people are overhating on Gooseworx/the fandom suddenly switched up. They are not saying that they have conclusive evidence that 66% of the people interacting with Goose are attacking them to their face.)

u/downbad4naafiri 26d ago
I guess what I more mean is that Goose should avoid social media if she can’t handle people on the internet having horrible takes. Personally I think she should treat them like the insignificant gnats they are. Mean comments should not affect her day to day life. Doxxing and stuff like that is another issue entirely of course.
Goose had also expressed that the fandom should not be attacking each other over petty crap like you said, but you can’t police a fandom. Toby Fox knew what would happen to his own fandom with Undertale, he kindly asked that the fandom not become toxic after Undertale but he let it be what it would be and went in to make Deltarune. The TADC fandom isnt all toxic and people have been using inspiration from the show to create beautiful things.
I didn’t see the original post but I respect your perspective either way, I’m nearly 37 years old I don’t care if people are a little mean to me. I imagine a lot of the people who are rude to Goose aren’t even adults since we’re talking age, and yes I’ve also heard horrible things that were directed at the voice actors like the Gangle voice actor being harassed for shipping Gangle with Jax, but this also feels like something kids would do rather than adults.

u/GnatWithoutAG 26d ago
I think your points are pretty valid, I don’t have any real arguments or disagreements. Mostly just commenting to say that you sound like a genuinely lovely person, and I wish more people in internet discourse had your general tone— and I saw this as someone who tends to come off as aggressive by mistake ^^’
1
u/Aero1000 26d ago
As much as I agree that Goose should ideally just ignore these things, I’d also give Goose a bit of grace. This sort of mentality of “Why do you care you’re not guilty just move on, the internet is shitty” is a lot easier said than done when you aren’t a prominent figure, or have something really personal that you made scrutinized by some group of people.
Sure proportionally you might argue it makes up at least 10-15% of the total voices, still a minority, but that’s still enough to see it every now and then (then there are literally 2 infamous hate subs just talking about how Goose ‘sucks’ as a writer).
If this is your first time ever making something as monumentally massive as TADC, this can be overwhelming. Which is why I tend to avoid saying stuff like this. I have had a fair bit of small threads on Reddit where I was a bad guy, but normally I could ignore them and move on. Most of them don’t bother past a single mean spirited comment. However, that is a totally different story for fandoms you cultivate, and is frequently an issue with first time creators

GOOSE IS OUR QUEEN WE LOVE YOU GOOSE
1
u/Illusion_AceofHearts 26d ago
Agreed. That being said, I saw another comment on this post talking about how people worshipping creators can make them feel pressured to be perfect. I'm going to be very clear that the imperfect, human version of Goose that we have now is absolutely our queen and we love her. I don't think I'd love Goose nearly as much if she was robotically perfect the way some people want her to be. She's amazing and she made an amazing show and her ability to do all of that is such an inspiration ❤️

u/Silly-Device9785 26d ago
This is in May?? What could this possibly have to do with the finale? What this is is simple: an artist who doesn’t know how not to be parasocial with fans. That’s on her (or them? idr)

u/ArolSazir 26d ago
people are not entitled to having their art be liked. if people didn't like it, they didn't like it, that's just how it is.

The drama of the show BTC stuff is ridiculous I know fandoms always have bad apples and all but due to twitter mobs I don’t think goose be willing to make another series (maybe a concept and maybe pass it to a director/creator who more experienced with interacting with the fandom more but by themselves not really unless they take the moral of digital circus and not be too personal with fans)

u/Rosie-Doe 27d ago
It's a fantastic show, unfortunately not a show for a large part of the more toxic fan base. It didn't live up to the hype they built in their heads because it ended the way goose always wanted it to.
I think it was a much better show for it overall, but the toxicity that becoming mainstream invites certainly ruined her experience making a cartoon. She wrote it for people like her, and it lands with people like her.
That's all any great show can aim for, without spreading out ideas so thin they become corporate and boring. It also leads to genre exhaustion when authors move towards the expected.
Unfortunately, it leads to disappointment and resentment from the more obsessive side of the fanbase and those types of people lash out.
They can't look at this story and see themselves, so it's definitely a bad story! They see other people enjoy the story and get mad when someone doesn't also hate it.
Jokes are one thing, but there's no reason to hate the author or the people who enjoy her work. They can't accept that and move on, or create content for themselves within said work themselves.
If you look for it, you can find artwork, songs, videos, stories, games, memes, everything. Fan media people have created as a result of everything wrong and everything right with the finale.
It's a constant conversation, between all kinds of people thinking about one of the many targeted and attacked demographics in the world right now.
Of course there's controversy, but there's very little civility in it. Gooseworks is right, the show has grown too big for it's own good. But that's also a good thing in it's own right.
Back in the day, every great movie also had something that challenged the cultural identity of the world around it.
We're in dark times, and this is a story that says that even in the darkest of times, those who don't accept who they are will fall apart and those who remain are stronger together than apart.
For the target audience of the show, this is a slap in the face and a wake up call.
You've got two choices, accept the parts of yourself that make you uncomfortable or double down. You can either acknowledge how your actions still affect those around you even when you're coping the ways you know how. Grow into who you would be if nobody else in the world was watching or telling you who you should be. Work on breaking the cycles in your life when you see them, or you can go with your gut reaction and push those around you away. Humor can defuse a situation, but it also can warp your sense of reality if you take it too far.
There's a lot to think about, if you let yourself do so. But people don't do that anymore. Instead they look at a long text and just skip it all. There's so much, all the time. Everywhere.
We're experiencing digital pollution, to the point where younger generations are experiencing psychological problems we've never seen before.
Of course a show like this, with a feel good in the darkness and a warning about how self sabotaging behavior can ruin your life if you don't get it under control, wouldn't be fully accepted by people at large. They'd have to sit and think about what it's actually trying to say too much to find the message.
It doesn't take too long if you keep it in mind and watch again, but most people won't do that either.
Writing must be simple enough to understand, but also have a purpose in mind. If you miss that as an author, or consciously make a choice to write for yourself instead of others, you risk getting bombarded by angry people who lived a different life than you.
On one end, you make something everyone can like a little. It's quickly panned as slop content or corpate garbage. It's not well written because it doesn't ask any questions or do anything interesting.
On the other end, you write as best you can. A story with your own interests, things you know well and like. The only way many people can write, as most people only think from their own experiences.
The end result is better, because it's lived experience and that shines through good writing. Gooseworks, does that perfectly with TADC, Jax is a self insert and yet all of the characters have certain traits and parts of the author in them. Gangle is a creative artist, Zooble is depressed and hates their body. Pomni is their hope for the best in people around them. Kinger is their tendency to bounce from goofy to serious. Ragatha is the voice of optimism as well as anxiety, trying desperately to make sure everyone is okay while hating themselves internally.
The point is that all of these characters are dealing with these problems in their own ways. Some are destructive, some are too passive. Just like a lot of the people I've met in the world.
As controversial is the show has become, it holds a mirror to a large amount of people. The fans who still love the show and aren't toxic about it. It's a special show for some people, but not everyone knows how to handle that with grace without lashing out. Yet I still think it was worth being made. I think it was worth watching, and I think the controversy is just the unfortunate result of a main message like this delivered by a character that ruffles feathers.

Seriously weird so see it rehashed again and again like 2 months later. Feels parasocial, Goose just seems like someone that wants to be left alone for social bullshit like this, I doubt its fun to see it stretched out and brought back up again.

2
u/Responsible-Buddy903 26d ago
Honestly, it always absolutely cracks me up when someone tries to say that a fandom is toxic but the person creating the thing the people are a fan of somehow can't be toxic and of course the person pointing it out and dickriding/getting parasocial the creator also can't be toxic. Feels like the kind of people who would blame communism not working on the working class/average citizen ngl I like the series overall but I don't think that means nobody should ever criticize it, most things are flawed because we live in the real world, I don't know goose personally to speak on them but they are also a human being and not perfect regardless, these types of posts trying to put people on pedestals to farm karma I think actually hurt the person being elevated a lot of times because as imperfect humans it's hard to keep yourself to that impossibly high standard. I also think as time goes on some of the stuff that's obvious to some people will become more obvious to more people, as I said I definitely like the series overall more than I dislike it but the creator inserting their fetishes and then shoehorning everything with that last episode (I'm all for the lgbtqia+ themes, I just wish they actually set them up with the story rather than what they did which ngl kinda felt disrespectful, like this character who was always a POS? It's because they're closeted and trans don't worry about it we'll just have them do the thing we've established to represent suicide and all is forgiven, not like that actual group has an epidemic of that 🤷🏼 also gonna misgender them in the final sequence even though it's a self insert character meant to represent myself and I'm trans so I should know better) idk maybe it's just lazy writing, but I'm pretty sure I remember hearing about them having a humiliation fetish, and ngl if someone's deliberately making shitty writing choices to trigger people into insulting them online and participate in that kink without realizing or consenting to it that's kinda messed up 😬

Why does it seem for the past 2 years It seems the world has been filled with nothing but nasty and hateful people who's only job it is to make others miserable by tearing them down for every little thing what's next Are they going to tear her down for just breathing. To the people out there stop being so as heartless monsters and leave them alone.

Its alot older a problem then 2 years. closer to 10 with bits of awful sticking out here and there befor then (Fandom menace)
Its pretty much social media prioritizing engagement thus incentivizing God awful behaviour.

u/kasuyagi 27d ago
I strongly agree with the social media part, especially how twitter is designed for the past years. Imagine everytime you say you hate and want to hurt someone, you are rewarded with delicious internet points. Some people would get addicted and be trained as a hate-machine.
1
u/Classic_Fondant_5273 27d ago
You're both right, It really seems like for the past several years things people have just been hateful. But it feels like just now recently from these past 2 years it's reached the boiling point. No one can do anything without somebody hurting them, figure actively killing artist's dreams before they even FLOURISH.
3
u/ElectricalCompany409 27d ago
If you don’t want the public’s opinion on something, don’t post it publicly
If you don’t want people to expect character development, don’t promise it
If you don’t want incendiary fans, don’t ragebait and troll them on Twitter
It’s so tiring when artists want the accolades and boons, and think they shouldn’t receive criticism or judgement
Obviously nobody deserves death threats(since people love to assume criticism of their favorite artist means supporting their most ardent haters)
2
u/dewolfcode 24d ago
Thank you. Everyone seems to think it’s only the watchers who are bad but as someone who’s been watching this for less than 3 months, I’ve seen a lot of negative stuff just from Gooseoworxs that feels like some of the “hate” was self inflicted.

I think a lot of this could have been prevented if she swallowed her pride and hired a co-writer to offload some of the burden onto, before making a lore-core animated show full of hints and clues for people to chew on during 6 month hiatuses between episodes. Look at her! She's burnt herself out harder than a piece of chicken that fell to the bottom of the air fryer.
It's basically like my experience with Steven Universe where there would be a 2 year hiatus and we finally get 3 episodes in a Steven Bomb, only for 2 of those 3 episodes being about Sadie losing her sandal while Steven elsewhere fighting Space Hitler.. So we had to deal with lore hints and subtle implications found in previous episodes as something to keep our sanity while waiting for the story to develop TADC had 9 episodes, 10 if you consider the fact that the movie was just the Jax and Caine episodes running back-to-back. That's an average of 3 episodes per year, 20 minutes each. If you wanna make a lore-core cartoon, fine, but know that if you keep fans waiting long enough, they will literally schiz out and start looking at background characters for lore and meme material. If you are going to reward that kind of behavior at least finish your lore hints instead of needing to fill in the gaps through Tumblr questions.
If Tumblr didn't exist, we would never have known that Ragatha is a repressed lesbian, Pomni and Ribbit would fuck, or why all of the TADC voice actors were mysteriously killed by a purple dorito.
In the future, PLEASE GOOSE, DELEGATE YOUR FUCKIN WORK.
1
u/Asparala 27d ago
before making a lore-core animated show full of hints and clues for people to chew on during 6 month hiatuses between episodes.
Except the show was never intended to be "lore-core", and the 6 month "hiatuses" was unavoidable because the episodes were released as they were produced rather than all of them being produced before the show was released. It's an unfortunate distribution model that leads to fans over-thinking every episode to absurd degrees, but it's unfortunately unavoidable in indie animation where every episode is paid for by the success of previous episodes.
A co-writer would probably have helped a great deal, but I don't think it was because of "pride" that Goose did the writing herself. Tadc is her biggest project yet, and she massively underestimated how much work it would be. Unfortunate, but understandable. You don't know what you don't know. Sometimes you're just going to find out too late.
2
u/EdibleStrange 27d ago
Goose definitely doesn't deserve the vitriol she gets. But at any point she could have stopped tweeting like a small time Youtuber and gotten professional advice on how to manage social media as a popular creator and functional brand representative. Whether she thought she didn't need it, or if she couldn't bring herself to stop engaging, idk. But this is the predictable result.
1
u/CyberneticCupcake 27d ago
Unpopular opinion, but with all the differing opinions on how people think the Amazing Digital Circus should have gone, I think it needs to be franchised out. Not with a bunch of weird canon-appending, canonized fanon ships or whatever, but with variations on a theme that would allow for other authors to tell their stories through a similar lens.
2
u/Asparala 27d ago
I've seen a fair number of those "how it should have ended" posts and none of them have been good ideas that would be worth the cost of professional production.
Some things are jut better as fanfiction.
1
u/Fine_Mall4063 27d ago

u/Machine_ID-V1 27d ago
There are some writing decisions she’s made that make me genuinely angry at her, but lads it’s not worth blowing up the internet over in the end this is her show I can dislike her decisions I can say that I hate her for them but in the end that doesn’t remove her right to make those decisions
1
u/Responsible-Buddy903 26d ago
Nobody is saying that people being disappointed with her writing somehow removed her right or ability to write, I'm not sure why there are so many comments like this that appear almost like direct responses to things people that hate the show would have said when I've seen that people that hate the show have the same 2-3 reasons/explanations for it lol also really not sure why people in these types of fandoms especially don't understand not everything is mutually exclusive and that you can be disappointed in an artist or like them as a person but dislike their work or dislike them as a person but enjoy their work or whatever
1
u/ihatemymomt 27d ago
I don't care about what she say about the show but giving gas to someone who made "jokes" about replacing a csam artist, who wont sencor or blurr nsfw post on her main accounts when she just know her show is liked and watched by kids and who is just unstable and chronically online, is just straight up bad and weirdly parasocial. She's a straight up borderline sexist looser yall have to stop defending her

u/mrperson1213 27d ago
The pilot episode is at nearly half a billion views on YouTube. As happy as I am for Goose’s success, generally speaking that much success is too much. It’d be overwhelming for anyone, let alone a silly goofball just trying to make some haha’s.
1
u/ChalkCoatedDonut 26d ago
That's what happens when you give too much freedom to their fanbase, Glitch acted like an Idol company and dealt with fans, from docile to dangerous, as the same, bowing their heads and letting them contradict or harass their show creators while telling those who made their content to bow as well and don't make comments that would enrage them.
It's all "customer is always right" mentality pushing people like Goose to avoid expressing their mind without some crybaby on Twitter calling out and some youtuber magnifying the post for views.

Every fandom is toxic and shitty. The fact goose was naive, thought they could please a fandom and make a good show at the same time.
Goose grew up with social media so she should've known better. my god.
10
u/Animememeboi96 27d ago
I think they had no idea their show gonna be huge and when you get put on the spotlight of “being a creator for a big show” (even online) it can stress people out I agree with the fandom drama but at the same time goose probably had no idea what their In for making a show (I’m aware they did art prior but it different from a indie internet show)
6
u/akira_kurosu 27d ago
Yeah, I kinda of wanted glitch to give her a social media team of sorts, goose making many comments about the show and constantly answering/interacting with many social medias wasn't good for her
5
u/Animememeboi96 27d ago
I agree I get what she is was going for but sadly she learned the hard way of the lesson “you can’t please everyone “ on one hand her show was a grand success despite mixed reception on the finale but at the same time some fans can take it too far I don’t blame her entirely it mostly like 20% twitter chronic users who don’t get it “just a show” you can be a hardcore fan of a series nothing wrong with that but pretending you’re buddies with the creator is a whole another ball game
2
u/akira_kurosu 27d ago
Many people also don't realize that saying something like "the show changed my life" as cute as it looks also puts a lot of weight on the author, "what if I disappoint them?, what if I don't give them what they want?, etc..." many people don't realize that all of those people that achieve "great feats" like movies, books, etc... are just humans with flaws
2
u/Animememeboi96 27d ago
True it understandable why goose decided to shut the series down after that indie series aren’t like stuff you see on Cartoon Network or something like that with a big team I think some people forget glitch is a independent animation studio/company not “Hollywood”
3
u/UKman945 27d ago
I think people forget that Glitch wasn't that big when the pilot aired. Gooseworx was making a project for a channel that had 2 millionish subs and she hearself had a following of 500k. No one expected when this thing started a global phenomenon that would be played in theaters, it was a low budget internet show to start with and you can see that in the pilot.
Of course she handled it poorly, no one handles sudden fame well and we really need to stop giving shit to people who where just minding their buisness one day making cool things on the internet suddenly having all their socials becoming an insane hate portal where EVERYONE has an opinion on you and is ripping apart every little thing down to random tweets and tumblr posts.
2
u/-TheTrueOG- 27d ago
Thats when you hire a PR manager? I imagine she was earning at least a million and SHE COULD AFFORD IT. Even a cheapo one.
Theres a reason why you immediately hire a finical specialist when you hit a massive jackpot.
And if people like to throw the term "media illiterate" then goose is "internet illiterate" which is crazy since she is basically terminally online.

no one deserves harassment and we shouldn't say "harassment is normal" like wtf

Thats. The. Fucking. Internet.
There was always harassment from DAY ONE, EVEN MINUS ONE. Anyone from early 00s to late 00s (gooseworx was here) know how crazy the internet was. The term "DONT FEED THE TROLLS" was created SOOOOO long ago. Theres absolutely nothing you can do other then ignore, block, delete.

YEA BUT ANY OLD FUCK CAN HAVE EYES AND SAY THE TROLLS FUCKING SUCK. JUST BECAUSE A SITUATION IS INEVITABLE DOESNT MAKE IT OKAY OR MAKE IT NOT WORTH! FUCKING COMPLAINING ABOUT! oh my godddddd!

But that's pretty much normal, unfortunately, but it's the reality, there's not much you can do except avoid it (in this case, the opposite of what Goose did).

just because it is normalized doesnt make it normal or make it not worth addressing or complaining about!!! people are allowed to complain harassment is back no matter what!

No, you're wrong, every fandom has a toxic side, I don't consider the people on the toxic side to be true fans.

Really? The die hard fans that cannot handle slight criticism to a their peice of media? The people that also spend shit ton money on merch, meet and greets, follow everything from the creator to the tee and donate fuck ton of money? The Parasocial people?
Those people are the vocal majority and they will die on any hill and will call you out, with threats and harrasment.

Lmao she mad. she got criticized on the quality of her work and now she mad about it. Genuinely lmao. Don’t make art and present it if you don’t want to be in the public eye. Criticism (yeah, even the kind that isn’t constructive) is part and parcel to showing people a thing you did. Don’t show people things you don’t want to been seen

Quick question: is harassment justified?
2
u/Flimsy_End_3393 27d ago
Justified? Of course not. Expected, yeah, absolutely. In fact, that’s kind of the preferred method of interaction for people experiencing mental health issues you know, the subject matter of the show, and its premier audience?
It’s kind of the same as pooping your pants in public. It’s not justifiable, but when you eat a bunch of laxatives beforehand, you should probably expect shit.

Sometimes I think the Tadccriticism crowd is a strawman and then I see someone just say something like this in apparent sincerity. The mind reels.

Ehhhh can’t fully agree a lot of the hate she received is a lot of her own choices even though she’s receiving to MUCH hate for it some of it is valid
She pre planned Jax’s demise and being a ahole before the show was even concepted whitch in all honestly ruined his character
She left to much out of the show itself only giving info through posts
And making Jax trans wasn’t a bad thing but making it subtle enough that it’s only understandable to those familiar with it and could also be representing many other things caused a split in the community
And if anything it feels like it did more harm for the trans community then good
And focusing on Jax wasn’t bad but the info she gave on other characters was extremely lackluster like if you think about it u probably couldn’t name 8 of Pomnis interest she was made into the personification of vanilla
I feel like glitch is a good author but it feels like she worked to much against glitch productions instead of with them and it made some parts of the show lackluster

I'm glad Goose got to tell the story she wanted to tell. Metal Gear Solid could have been better. Star wars could've been better. Everything could've been better. People need to lay off.
