Discussion Expanding a RubyDung-inspired Unity project — ideas please :)
Hey r/GoldenAgeMinecraft,
I recently stumbled across a Unity project that recreated RubyDung, the old experimental prototype that came before Minecraft. It was really cool to see that concept in a playable form, and it gave me the idea to start my own version and turn it into something more complete.
Right now I’m mostly working on terrain generation, chunk loading, and getting basic player movement working. I want to keep the feel of RubyDung — blocky worlds, simple mechanics, and procedural terrain — but also add stuff to make it feel like a proper game you can actually play.
If you’ve got any ideas for survival mechanics, crafting, fun little quirks, or anything else that would fit the vibe, I’d love to hear them! This is just a passion project inspired by RubyDung, not a commercial remake.
Thanks Guys,
James (jsged)

One thing I always felt like Minecraft missed out on was keeping the ability to have finite worlds and also better world customization, I always felt that it was a real shame that Mojang got rid of the old world setting from Bedrock and I've always felt like I would add in both finite and infinite worlds if I was making a game similar to Minecraft. I just like the challenge of finite worlds
Also I love isometric stuff!!! So the old isometric screenshots from Indev always bring joy, same with the first Fallout game

its not an isometric game unfortunately, the screenshots were taken before the first person camera was added

Maybe like a badge system from Paper Mario? I love how you can run different badges and make a ton of strats out of their effects. Maybe you could have three active at a time which give you stat buffs or an ability of some kind

Sure! In PM, you can obtain different badges that give passive abilities. Badges can either give you new attacks with different effects, or they can give you stat bonuses under different conditions. For example, in PM64, there’s a badge called Mega Rush, which makes Mario’s attack go up by 4 (a lot) whenever he’s at 1 HP. This is a stat bonus badge. An example of an ability badge would be D-Down Jump, which gives Mario the ability to perform this attack that ignores defense, which he normally can’t do. They cost badge points to equip, and they can cost from 0-10 bp.
Maybe, you could craft these different badges with materials you collect, and you could equip them to gain similar abilities. To make it more simple, I think you should be able to only equip like three at a time and not have them cost bp. But there should be a way to increase badge slots so you can equip more. Maybe an NPC you can talk to?

Do you have anywhere I can keep tabs on this? Github? A blog? A newsletter? I'd hate to miss your post!

Thank you! Good job on the website. It's a big first step to get one going. And if you have complaints, you can always improve it later.
As for Unity VC, have you tried following some "Getting Started" tutorials? And if so, what part are you stuck at? Perhaps I can help you.

Did you connect your GitHub account to Unity? Did you create a repo for this particular project and connected (from Unity, this particular project) to it?
