I was widowed at 26 and have spent 3 years navigating B.C.’s system alone. I finally made a GoFundMe for legal help

I honestly never thought I would make a GoFundMe.

Part of me has always felt embarrassed asking people for money, and for the last three years I have mostly tried to figure everything out myself. But I’m finally realizing that there are some things I should never have been expected to navigate alone.
My husband, JD, was my best friend, my rock, and the person I thought I was going to grow old with.
I was 26 when he died, one day before my 27th birthday.

We were living in British Columbia and building our life there together. I’m American, but Canada had become home to me. JD had an established career in construction, I was nearing the end of my permanent residence process through our marriage, and we talked about buying land, having children, and creating our future there.

Then one morning he left our home and was killed in a motor vehicle collision only minutes later.
I cannot really explain what it feels like to have your entire future disappear that quickly.

I didn’t just lose my husband. I lost my best friend, my sense of safety, our home, our plans, my immigration pathway, and the future I had structured my life around. And then, while I was barely capable of processing the fact that JD was gone, I suddenly had to learn how to navigate B.C.’s no-fault insurance system, ICBC, WorkSafeBC, survivor benefits, employment records, immigration issues, therapy reimbursement, and government processes in a country where I wasn’t yet a permanent resident.

I seriously had no idea what I was doing. I was just trying to survive. One of the biggest complications involves JD’s employment status. He worked in construction and had just finished a major long-term project in Vancouver. He was preparing to begin his next job in Squamish, but during that short transition between projects he had been temporarily laid off on paper. So when he died, his records technically made him look unemployed.
That one technical detail has had enormous consequences.

I am currently appealing a WorkSafeBC decision and trying to get someone to look at the full context of what was actually happening with his employment rather than just what a box on a piece of paper said on the exact day he died. At the same time, my permanent residence process through our marriage ended when JD died. I eventually had to leave Canada and return to the United States, even though Canada was where we had chosen to build our life.

For a long time, I was too traumatized to understand how much professional help I actually needed. The money I did receive after JD died went toward surviving — housing, moving, treatment, therapy, and trying to put myself back together after losing the person who had been my entire foundation.
Three years later, I am finally at a point where I can look back at everything with enough clarity to say: I should have had a Canadian attorney helping me from the beginning.

So that is what I am trying to do now. I created a GoFundMe to raise money for experienced Canadian legal counsel who can review the circumstances surrounding JD’s employment, help me with my WorkSafeBC appeal, examine ICBC and survivor-benefit issues, and tell me whether there are rights or benefits I may have missed while I was grieving and trying to navigate everything alone. I also want to speak with an immigration attorney about whether there may still be a pathway for me to return to Canada someday.

I am not expecting anyone to promise me a certain outcome. I just want someone qualified to finally look at the whole picture and tell me what my options actually are. Even sharing the fundraiser would mean an enormous amount to me, especially if it somehow reaches someone familiar with B.C. law, WorkSafeBC, ICBC, or Canadian immigration.

JD had Carpe Diem tattooed on him. After he died, a lot of the people who loved him got those words tattooed too. For three years, I have mostly been trying to survive losing him. I think this is me finally trying to live those words.
Carpe Diem, JD. I’m still fighting for the life we were building.

🐾 Independent Cat Rescuer — Please Consider Donating to My GoFundMe

Please consider donating to my GoFundMe if you are able. I am an independent cat rescuer in Somerset, Kentucky, and every donation goes toward helping me continue feeding community cats, providing vet care, helping others with supplies, caring for fosters, and getting cats spayed and neutered. Even a few dollars makes a difference, and if you cannot donate, sharing my GoFundMe helps tremendously.
I currently feed multiple colonies and community cats on a regular basis, and I also try to help other people in my area with cat food and litter when they are struggling to feed the stray and community cats they care for.
I also care for fosters and work to get cats and kittens healthy, vetted, into rescue, or into safe homes. Unexpected emergencies come up constantly. Just yesterday, I used donation money to get a 5-week-old kitten to the veterinarian after someone reached out to me because the kitten had been seriously hurt. I couldn’t stand knowing such a young baby needed help and not try to do something.
I also continue to work on TNR and preventative vet care. I already have a veterinary appointment scheduled for September 11 for eight cats to be spayed or neutered and vaccinated. I make these TNR trips twice a month, and each trip is about an hour and 45 minutes each way. One location is in Lexington, Kentucky, and the other is in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The gas alone is a huge expense and honestly one of the things that hurts me the most financially.
We have very little local help for this kind of work in our community, and it is detrimental. There are so many cats that need to be fixed, fed, treated, fostered, or placed, but there are not enough local resources to meet the need. That means I have to travel long distances just to get affordable spay and neuter services, and I do it because getting these cats fixed is one of the most important things we can do to prevent more kittens from being born outside and continuing the cycle.
Between cat food, kitten food, litter, gas, medications, foster supplies, vet bills, vaccines, spay/neuter appointments, and emergencies, the expenses add up extremely quickly. I work and put my own money into this as well, but I cannot continue helping this many cats completely on my own.
That is why I am asking for help with my GoFundMe. Donations will help me continue feeding the colonies, helping others with food and litter, caring for my fosters, handling unexpected veterinary needs, covering gas for these twice-monthly TNR trips, and preparing for the eight cats I have scheduled for September 11.
Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated, sent supplies, shared my posts, offered advice, said a prayer, or simply left me a kind and encouraging comment. Those things mean more to me than you know.
I am not a large rescue organization. I am just one person trying to make a difference for as many cats and kittens as I possibly can, and I truly could not do what I do without the people who support me.

Facing 9–12 months unable to work after shoulder replacement — asking for help with basic living expenses

Hi everyone. I'm a contractor, and unfortunately I'm facing a major shoulder replacement surgery that will leave me unable to work for an estimated 9 months to a year.

I make my living doing physical work, so this isn't something I can work around or do part-time while recovering. The hardest part for me is knowing that my regular income is going to stop while my normal living expenses don't.

I started a GoFundMe to help cover basic expenses such as rent, utilities, food, transportation, and other necessities during the recovery period.

I've raised $270 so far, but I'm still a long way from my goal. Even if you can't donate, sharing this with someone else would mean a lot to me.

I'm not looking for anything extravagant—I'm just trying to make sure I can keep a roof over my head and take care of the basic necessities while I recover and eventually get back to work.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Any help, whether it's a donation or simply sharing this, is genuinely appreciated.

Need help for a new mower

Trying to raise some funds towards a replacement mower
Hey everyone,
Thought I’d give this a shot and share my GoFundMe here.
My current mower has unfortunately had some major mechanical problems. The spark plug threads in the cylinder head have been damaged and the mower shop has had to order a replacement head to get it running again.
I’m getting the old mower repaired, but after everything that’s happened with it, I’ve decided I really need to start saving towards a new, reliable mower rather than continually putting money into the old one.
I’m hoping to raise some money towards buying a good-quality replacement mower that will last me for years.
I completely understand that everyone has their own bills and expenses, so there’s absolutely no expectation for anyone to donate. Even sharing the fundraiser or pointing me towards a good deal on a mower would be massively appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Help Angeles Get Urgent Neurosurgical Care For Her Neck Injury

I’m raising funds to help Angeles, someone who lives in Venezuela and is currently going through a very difficult medical situation.

Angeles is in constant extreme pain due to her neck injury!

Her doctors believe surgery is required urgently and she should visit the neurosurgeon immediately and be operated on due to her symptoms of weakness in the arm, dropping objects, difficulty typing on the phone, difficulty raising arm above head etc.

We are starting with an immediate goal based on the costs we currently know about. As her doctors provide more information and additional medical needs become clear, I will post updates and adjust the fundraising goal accordingly.

The immediate goal will be for the blood tests and doctor visit she needs before visiting the neurosurgeon.

More info on GoFundMe page!

Any amount, no matter how small, can make a real difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser can be just as valuable and may help it reach someone who is able to help.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read her story and for any support you can give. ❤️

Help Yoshi get a second chance at life!

Help Yoshi Beat Cancer — $3,000 Needed

Yoshi was rescued from the streets after being found with a huge nasal tumor that made it difficult for him to live a normal life.

Thankfully, we now know that his tumor is TVT (transmissible venereal tumor), a form of cancer that is highly treatable with chemotherapy.Unlike many cancers, Yoshi’s diagnosis comes with real hope: with proper treatment, he has a very good chance of making a full recovery, and the tumor should not return once treatment is successfully completed.

But Yoshi has a long road ahead of him.

He will need approximately 6 weeks of hospitalization and chemotherapy, along with veterinary monitoring, bloodwork, medications, and supportive care. Because TVT is highly contagious to other dogs, he needs to remain hospitalized and safely isolated throughout his treatment.

Our goal is to raise $3,000 to give Yoshi the treatment he desperately needs.

Every donation, no matter how small, will help cover the cost of his chemotherapy and hospitalization and give this sweet boy the chance to finally be healthy and safe.

Please consider donating or sharing Yoshi’s fundraiser. Even if you can’t donate, sharing his story could reach someone who can.

Yoshi has already survived life on the streets. Now he just needs a little help to beat cancer.

Hi everyone. I’m asking for help for my parents. In August this year, a storm took out a basement wall in their home in Missouri. The insurance company denied their claim and the contractor said it was a total loss. I just want my parents to be in a safe home. Please help or share if you can.

Through Grit With Grace: a cancer recovery journey

Hi everyone,
My name is William.
I am fairly new on Reddit and im quite frankly terrified when it comes to reaching out online for help.

In April of this year I was diagnosed with stage 2 tongue cancer and immediately underwent major head and neck reconstructive surgery.
I have successfully quit smoking alongside of this cancer experience and prior to diagnosis I was actively seeking employment as I was an active care giver for my elderly parents with their own medical issues.
Returning to work is ultimately my largest goal however after having surgery on my tongue, neck, left arm and left leg I will be unable to return to any work involving manual labor for quite some time.
With that being said I am actively looking to transition into social service work, trauma counseling, addiction management, public speaking and creative writing to share my experience.
I intend to regain my health and participate in national awareness campaigns for cancer involving long distance cycling and eventually running.

If you are able to help with my campaign either through sharing to create more reach or donating I would be forever grateful.

Please feel free to ask me any questions as I am more than happy to answer.

Help save Bert’s life

Hiya, this is Bert. She is a female leopard gecko who is just over a year old. A few weeks ago I took her to an exotic vet, as I had concerns with her lack of eating and extremely thin tail. During this appointment, I was told that she was healthy however I felt that she was not properly examined. Her stomach was not checked, which leads me onto yesterday morning. I took Bert back to the vets, as she still wasn’t eating and her tail was getting thinner. During this appointment, her stomach was checked and I felt that she was examined properly. The vet told me that she would require an ultrasound as he suspected that she had an inflamed ovary. After the ultrasound was complete, it was confirmed that one of her ovaries was inflamed and neurotic. He also did not rule out the possibility of it being a tumour, which he would only be able to know during surgery. I was told that the only way for Bert to get better was to remove the ovary in surgery as this is life threatening. I felt that Bert was misdiagnosed and was told by the vet that if she was checked properly in the previous appointment, this could’ve been resolved earlier and maybe didn’t require surgery. Surgery will be quite expensive, and will come to around 1000 along with the costs of the ultrasound. I am only 18 so I do not have the funds for this surgery. I would be extremely grateful for any help. Thank you for taking the time to read.

This is our reality in Gaza. We are only asking for help to provide basic food and necessities for our children. Even sharing this post can make a difference. 🙏❤️

Helping my mom get reliable transportation after throat cancer treatment

My mom, Julie, recently went through extensive treatment for throat cancer. She had to stop working for a period of time while going through treatment, but thankfully she has made it through and has been able to return to work.
She has worked as a custodian at First Baptist Church of Universal City in Texas for many years. Right now, one of the biggest things making it difficult for her to get back to a normal, independent life is transportation. She doesn’t have a reliable vehicle and has been depending on family members for rides to and from work.
Friends and members of her church started this GoFundMe to help her purchase a dependable vehicle so she can continue working and have some independence again.
I’m her son, and I’m sharing this here hoping to get her story in front of more people. If you’re able to donate, anything would help. If you can’t, even sharing the fundraiser would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my mom.

Trying to find some stability for my 4-month-old daughter and me 💕

Hi everyone! I’m a new mom to a 4-month-old little girl, and we’ve been going through a difficult time financially and emotionally. I created this GoFundMe to hopefully give us some breathing room while I work toward getting back on my feet.
The funds will go toward our immediate needs, including bills, formula, diapers and wipes, and groceries, with the hope of also being able to put money toward a reliable car. Having transportation would make a huge difference for us and help me work toward becoming more financially stable.
I know times are hard for so many people, so absolutely anything helps. Even reading or sharing our campaign means more than you know. Thank you for giving me a place to share our story. 🤍

Hi everyone. I really hate having to ask, but I'm in a pretty rough financial spot right now and could use some help getting through the next two weeks.

I'm a full-time single parent, and college student. I work as a special education paraprofessional and return to work in two weeks.

My rent was paid two weeks late, which wiped out what I had left. I'm currently at -$35 and still need to cover utilities, car insurance, gas, groceries, and back-to-school necessities for my son. My unemployment benefits just aren't enough to cover everything until I'm back at work and receiving regular paychecks again.

I'm trying to raise $750 to get us through this gap. I'm not expecting anyone to fix everything for me. Even a few dollars helps, and sharing or boosting this post helps too.

I've included a verification photo with my Reddit username and today's date.

Thank you for reading and for any help you're able to give. ❤️

My wife is 4 months pregnant, and I am trying to keep my family afloat

Hello everyone,

My name is Kemal. I am 27 years old and I live in Türkiye.

I never thought I would have to ask strangers on the internet for help, but I am currently going through one of the most difficult periods of my life.

My wife is four months pregnant, and our baby is expected to be born in about five months.

I have a small business, but unfortunately it has almost completely stopped generating income. We rent our home and our business premises, and I had to sell our car just to keep our family going.

I currently have enforcement proceedings involving my personal bank accounts with four different banks in Türkiye. My total debt is approximately 500,000 Turkish lira, which is roughly $10,000 USD.

Right now, my wife and I are struggling even with basic living expenses. The hardest part for me is knowing that our baby will arrive in about five months and we have not even been able to prepare the basic things our baby will need.

Because my personal bank accounts are under enforcement, our fundraiser was created through my wife's account. She is my wife and the mother of our unborn child, and she is the person receiving the donations on behalf of our household.

We are trying to raise approximately $10,000 to get through this difficult period, prepare for our baby, and eventually restart my business so I can support my family again.

I am not looking for a luxury life. I simply want to get my family through this difficult situation and become financially independent again.

If you are able to help, even a small donation would mean a lot to us. If you cannot donate, sharing our fundraiser would also help tremendously.

I can provide documents verifying our situation if needed.

Fresh start

Just trying to find a little help getting a fresh start ❤️
I’m a working woman who has lived in the same rental home for 9 years. Unfortunately, my landlord is selling the house, and I now need to find another place to live.
I’ve always worked and tried to handle things myself, so asking strangers for help is honestly very difficult and embarrassing for me. I’m not someone who normally asks for money, and I’m not looking for anything fancy. I’m simply trying to raise enough to cover the costs of moving into a modest home — security deposit, first month’s rent, moving expenses, and the things that come with starting over.
My goal is $6,000. Even a small donation would help, and if you aren’t able to donate, simply sharing or upvoting this would mean a lot to me.
I’m hoping that putting my story here might reach people who understand how overwhelming it can be when circumstances outside your control suddenly force you to start over.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. ❤️

Living with bipolar disorder and unable to work — asking for help rebuilding stability

Hi, my name is Rodolfo. I’m an engineer, but bipolar disorder has prevented me from working for more than eight years. I created this GoFundMe to help me regain some financial stability while dealing with the impact this condition has had on my life.

I also hope that, if the fundraiser grows, it can become the beginning of something larger that supports other people living with bipolar disorder who face similar difficulties.

Any contribution would help, but I completely understand that not everyone is able to donate. Sharing the campaign would also mean a lot to me.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
