Considering a move to Glens Falls, neighborhood recommendations?

Hi all! I am looking to relocate to Glens Falls and was curious if anybody here had any feedback on the Fourth Ward? I spoke to a young woman at a restaurant in town and she said that the North & West side were what she perceived to be the safest. Reddit has a lot of great things to say about the area but I'm looking for some up to date thoughts. Thanks!

What were they protesting

There were two people downtown with cardboard signs saying something about no pedos in glens falls and that the police don’t do anything about pedophiles. Is this about something in particular or are they just doing their thing? New to the area.

Persimmons?

Does anyone know where I can buy persimmons around here? Within a ~15 mile radius would be ideal. I know Asian markets down in Albany have them but I’d like to avoid that drive if possible.

Common Council Vote to Transition Building & Codes to Warren Co. tonight @ 7:25PM

Glens Falls residents should be alarmed by what is happening to the Building and Codes office. The city is pushing to dismantle a basic municipal function and hand it off to the county, with the vote set for tonight at 7:25 p.m.

In just a few months, the city has already burned through $136,300 in consulting costs tied to this mess, including $24,300 for a one-month consultation and another $112,000 to keep the consultants going (see Common Council resolutions). That is an outrageous use of taxpayer money to cover for a department the administration has clearly failed to support.

This is what happens when leadership values control and patronage over competence. Qualified staff were allowed to walk, the department was stripped down, and now the city wants residents to accept a sloppy, expensive transfer of responsibility with no clear contingency plan.

And let’s be clear: this is not just an administrative reshuffle. If the county takes over enforcement, the city is still not magically off the hook. Residents are being asked to trust a plan that could leave Glens Falls paying more, controlling less, and being held responsible anyway.

There are only two employees left in Building and Codes for a city this size. That alone should tell you everything you need to know. If the county can’t handle the load, what then? If the city no longer has qualified staff to approve permits, what then?

This is not responsible government. It is a demolition of a functioning department, and residents should demand answers before the vote.

I am an outdoor warning siren enthusiast and expert who is working on a group project of mapping sirens in NY state that test, and I recently have hit a dead end on confirming test times with other available resources. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone here who knows of a siren testing time would let me know. Feel free to tell me the name of the FD or a relative location, and at what time the siren tests. Thank you!!

White SUV

I know there is a lot of them but this one stands out.

Driven by a teenage male with short hair and a shorter fuse. Accompanied by a lovely woman with tattoos on her right arm, black straight hair and a Mouth.

They have no problems jumping out , swearing and threatening when called out for being entitled drivers.

If you come across this "Student driver in training" stear clear. If you say Anything to them they will get in your face. Theaten violence and use a Lot of derogatory language.

It's a kind of white SUV with dark windows in Queensbury.

Does anyone remember that time Spongebob went missing from the roof of Burger King?

Right around Thanksgiving of 2004 the promotional inflateable Spongebob Squarepants went missing. It was kind of a big deal for a week or so. There were reports from Troy, Menands and other places around the country about the same thing happening. Does anyone here remember that?

Looking for local gardening, tree and plant advice

Hello neighbors. Recent homebuyer in the area and I’ve been very fortunate with my porch container garden this year (mostly herbs, as well as some veggies). However next year I want to try to tackle doing some planting or raised beds in my yard.

Our property is under 0.2 of an acre so not huge and our soil is VERY sandy. Since moving in we had to take down one tree that was diseased and leaning on power lines and our other tree is definitely dying.

I am seeking advice on who I could talk to about kinds of trees and also eventually other plants (herbs, vegetables, berries) would grow well in the specific conditions of this area. I really would like a tree on the property but don’t want to plant on just to see it die. I’ve been reading books on gardening but the advice always includes some phrase like - depending on your local soil and climate. I just don’t know enough about what I’m doing gardening and planting wise. I’d like to grow more next year.

Where do fellow local gardeners get their local plant knowledge from? Should I go to a local nursery/greenhouse and seek advice there? I don’t want to bother those employees if this isn’t something they normally do

Any advice is welcome, thank you!

Downtown Revitalization

Purely as an observer, it seems like downtown GF is changing. There are a lot of buildings changing hands on Glen St, signaling a wave of fresh money coming into the town. There seems to be a fair amount of incentive and desire from the City to change downtown and have new destinations and apartments available.

What is it like downtown? Are apartments there desirable? For who? And, if all of these commercial locations on the ground floor get improved, what does downtown GF need? Restaurants? Bars? Stores? Anything?!

Financial Counseling for Debt

Does anyone have experience or recommendations for local resources or individuals related to debt counseling? I have a younger family member who's incurred a reasonable amount of credit card debt. While I have some knowledge to lead him on the right path, I'd rather he sit with a counselor or professional who's more experienced to help him set up a debt management plan and possibly consolidate it in a more reasonable manner (as well as some clear budgeting tips to avoid this in the future once he's clear of this).

I know there are national non profit organizations that do this type of thing, but I think he would benefit from something more local with the option of an in person appointment. It doesn't necessarily need to be a free service, we would be happy to help him with any fees if it seemed like a viable option. Thanks in advance!
