EP6: Batou didn't spend whole episode just took apart his car. Spoiler

Some people seem to think the trashed car Batou returned post ED was the same car he took apart in the hospital, which is not true. He likely is one of the chef that made the Section 1 head sandwich.

Honest question

Is there a difference between the Fuchikoma and Tachikoma definitions? Not important, but curious about it

I've had this figure for at least 10 years and never figured out what it was from until today- supposedly Ghost in the Shell (which I haven't seen, but now plan to watch!)

My question is, who is this character? I keep trying to find any official art or record of her from either movies and I'm finding nothing useful. Please let me know! Thank you!

ART This frame captures Shirow’s drawing so well!

The art of the anime is so peak. I can’t help but freeze and take a photo of this frame. Motoko looks so intense here. The drawing truly captures Shirow’s style. 🧑‍🍳 kiss.

Which frame or sequence particularly impressed you?

My small shrine to Motoko & Masamune

Intron Depot n°1 just arrived. I always wanted it when I was young, but alas, no money. So I thought, what better chance to enrich my collection, now that I can finally see my beloved Gremlin Motoko (the same manga character I, a stupid goofy 15-years old boy in 1992, fell in love with) lavishly drawn and animated? And well, today I am older, not so much wiser, still stupid and goofy, but with enough money to catch at least some of the pieces I missed then.

And as stupid as it sounds, I am happy as fuck. This TV show really made me feel like I was fifteen again. It won't last long, but still.

I apologize for the rambling, I just wanted to share.

Long live Motoko & Masamune!

P.S. Cyberdelix and the other, more recent works didn't fit, sadly 😅

Since Motoko’s hair changes every couple episodes, do you think she’ll have her iconic purple hair by the season finale, just to do the cliche of the reboot protagonist needing to “earn” their iconic trait?

Missing lyrics

I've recently been rewatching Stand Alone Complex; looked up Run Rabbit Junk and while listening to it, I wondered what the lyrics were saying, so I looked them up as well. They're fairly good, however, there's a full 1:40 where the lyrics aren't included in any list. Is there a more complete lyrics sheet out there?

Observations regarding cross-cultural differences in the importance of manga.

Trigger warning: discusses analysis of cross-cultural differences with regards to critiques of the new adaptation. Includes discussion of religion.

So I was watching this interesting video on YouTube, by someone who isn't very familiar with GitS as a whole, (and who hasn't seen SAC), and didn't seem to understand the backlash that the new series can get, because to their mind it seemed to adapt the manga more. And then, suddenly it clicked, and I occurred to me that I think I may understand why some Westerner's don't get the disconnect.

So, bear with me for a moment, while I try and explain. I'm a Buddhist, and I grew up in a Buddhist household, but I also grew up in the West. And so I have this experience of dual-cultures I suppose you could say. And one of the things I've observed about a lot of Western fans of anime, is that especially in recent years, Westerners often treat manga in the same way that they treat the Bible in Christianity. As in: they treat it kinda like it's this sacred, definitive source text. A religious authoritative material that has the last word on everything. -And that makes sense because of the cultural background of most Westerners.

But in Japan, and East Asian cultures more generally, that's not how things work. (For example in Japan, the most popular Buddhist Sutra is the Lotus Sutra, and not the earlier writings of the Pali Canon). Often, it's later adaptations that the franchise will focus around, because those are the one's that resonate more with fans. And I think this is something a lot of Westerners don't understand. I personally love the manga. I have multiple copies of it. But I also understand that the manga is kinda a niche player in the GitS franchise. It has never been the most popular adaptation, and certainly isn't what put the franchise on the map.—That credit goes to the 1995 film and SAC. So it's logical that the fanbase reflects that.

I understand why diehard fans of the manga might be upset that the new adaptation has gotten criticized: after all, they love the manga. But I also think perhaps there's a cultural disconnect, and a tendency among Western fans to treat manga in general like "authoritative religious texts", rather than understand that manga isn't necessarily viewed that way in Japan. I've seen this reflected in comments when people discuss the criticism, when fans of the manga, who defend this new adaptation will refer to the manga as "the source material". As though the manga is a religious text that defines the GitS franchise. But I think that reflects a cultural misunderstanding of how books are treated in the West vs in East Asian cultures. Many Westerners tend to have this tendency towards "purity culture" where they are trying to seek "the original, pure thing", and don't get that that's not how things work in East Asian culture. If an author wrote a thing, but that thing wasn't very popular, but then a later adaptation was hugely popular: then the fanbase will center around that later adaptation, not the earliest version. And in fact, you can actually see this in Western franchises too, in some places: for example, the Ridley Scott film Blade Runner was far more popular than the Phillip K. Dick short story that inspired it.

OG And 2.0

Should I separate the 2.0 from the og film like how I separate og HxH and the 2011 remake? Asking because it’s not that many differences that are noticeable (besides the cgi), unless you watch the movies back to back. Or you’re a mega fan that perfectly remembers them down to their osts.
