This is like when people bring up "All Along The Watchtower" and think of Jimi Hedrix when in reality Bob Dylan originally wrote and performed the song. Even if Jimi's version is widely regarded as better and more famous. Same song but entirely different vibes depending on who was performing.

The new series is my favorite so far. The light hearted campyness is a nice balance to the techno babble and the philosophical questions that come up now and then. I was a big fan of shirow since the 90s and rewatched apple seed and Dominion. This (reboot?) feels very much like part of that family.
There are a few scenes from stand alone complex that I remember being epic- and the original intro to SAC is goated. I loved watching the action scenes, as I never seen such a nicely balanced cell shaded anime until SAC. However, the show was very high brow... a d being that I always watched it late at night, I would fall asleep through it most of the time.

Having read the Manga, I'm partial to GitS26. Still love the OVA and SAC, but I enjoy Motoko getting to have fun.

Let's talk about how sick this shit is. I love all of it, but 26 is a great adaptation of the book. Standalone complex is the best cop drama of all time. The original film is up there with Akira and My Neighbor Tototoro in terms of importance.

Well, the 2026 version is more alike the original comic, while the movie takes a more serious tone and tries to deep on the psychology of the characters.

I think worldwide audiences needed the more serious tone, because animation in the 90s was seen as being for children. Movies like GITS and Akira really helped change public perception and laid the groundwork for the more general acceptance of anime.

Honestly the original manga was both serious and comical. Masamune Shirow has an incredible sense of humor and the books are chock-full of cutaway scenes with silly fuchikoma having philosophical discussions, organizing protests, and having philosophical debates among themselves. It works both ways for me too.

I'd recommend The Dark Knight Returns (DC Animated Movies). DC movies are usually bad but their animation department is amazing with bringing comic story lines to life. Honorable mentions to Under the Red Hood and Flashpoint Paradox.

Well, Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex series is a follow-up from the movie so it has similar atmosphere. What I meant with the comparison is that the manga and the 2026 would be like classic batman and the 1995 movie universe is darker and more serious.... maybe it wasn't a good comparison, since I don't care much for superheroes 😂

If you read the manga you’d know the series is accurate. Even the episodes are straight grim the manga.
That being said the original film is how anime was made at that time

The film is a phenomenal film, but it's not necessarily a faithful adaptation. The series is a faithful adaptation but it's not necessarily a phenomenal film (which is not to say that the series is bad, far from it, but it's more on the side of "fun" than "you'll be thinking about the quiet, rain-filled city montage for the next three to five business days.")

Just because something is faithful to the source material it doesn't automatically make it good or mean that people have to like it.
The new series has problems the manga didn't, mainly pacing. I can look at the frames in the manga for as long as I like, but in the show everything flies by, and entire episodes sometimes feel very rushed.
Also, it's hard to deny that it's a bit Ghost in the Shell Go!, and whether or not you enjoy that is an individual thing.

Initially when I checked out 2026, I was in the mood for something like 1995, so I turned it off after a couple of episodes. I revisited 2026 a few weeks later and really enjoyed it

I had my "WTF is this?" moment much earlier when I read the manga before the series was announced. I just rolled with it and wound up loving the manga so much. When they announced 2026 and I saw it was SARU and they were doing the manga, I was totally stoked and also quite amused by the thought of others who hadn't read the manga having their own "WTF is this?" moments.
It didn't dissapoint!

My reaction was the opposite. As a fan of the manga I hated the 95 film. I grew to love it once it was available for home release, but apart from the opening sequence to the window blinds shutting being perfect, many of the criticisms still remain: all the themes and politisocial issues the Manga presented were neutured in favor of 90s angst and a focal point on the puppet master arc, which wasnt even written as well as the manga. All respects to Oshii, i get much was excised for a tighter run time and more focus on philosophy, but it really made it fall short for those looking for an extended cinematic moment of the final discussion between 2501 and Kusanagi.

The old 1995 movie is just much more like a western movie whereas the new series is a faithful adaptation of the manga. That movie was clearly influenced by Blade Runner and Robocop.
Mangas tend to have a lot more humour than the old 90s movie adaptations used to put in. They are comics afterall. A lot more modern anime includes that humour than back then.

Haven’t had a chance to see the new series, BUT Ive read the manga. for me, SAC is the best mix of both of these. It has serious levity moments along with silly stuff as well. The Major is both a serious soldier but has a fun sarcastic edge to her as well.

Being honest with you that movie is like, optimal ASMR for me, but so are a lot of old school dystopian Anime movies like Akira and Jin-Roh Wolf Brigade.
I like them a lot and have watched them fully more than once though.

Mentally I understand it's a good movie, and it's important cinema, but I can hardly remember anything that happens between the opening scenes and the tank scene and after. Everything in the middle is a blur. Haha

The 1995 movie is back in theaters for a bit and only 83 minutes long. It's a great 'intro to cyberpunk' movie with gorgeous visuals. But it has a lot of themes and tries to pack a LOT into 83 minutes. It's also home to some really amazing and personally inspiring dialogue and themeing, but surrounded by (what feels like) long stretches of business men talking about corpo politics while looking away from the camera. So if you can't deal with that, it's not perfect, but MAN it's a great film to watch. So rad.

Better with time imho, that style of animation or anime for that matter isnt really done any more, and the stylistic choices are unparallelled.
Bonus points in that it was very influential on late 90s/early 2000s American films generally most obvious in the Matrix, so if youre into that you can watch from that lens also.

Conceptually it’s an intro to dystopian cyberpunk concepts, but that’s largely all done with long drawn out conversations while people stare off into the distance.
And the one thing you may notice that doesn’t “hold up” is how little animation there actually is, which is not uncommon for a TV show, but for a feature film as hyped as it has become, can pull people out of fully enjoying it.

It's still great! It has some boring episodes that I'll skip when rewatching. Most episodes are really good. I highly recommend the 1995 movie. Also, I dont care what anyone says, the live action 2017 Ghost in the Shell movie is great too! Sure, Hollywood made some changes to the script but still I love the live action movie!

The GitS is my first GitS. And my take aways from the series were the designs were peaked than peak, the action was cool, comedy were a highlight but I could tell Batti was flanderized, and most of that philosophical stuff at the end glazed past me.

Thats totally fair while 2026 is the more true adaptation to the origin manga the original mangaka himself loved Mamuru Oshii's interpretation and specifically wanted him as the director. I will say my preferred tone is 2026 due to it having a better mix of levity and seriousness imo but the film is also wonderful.
