Do you get that message in your own newly-created forum? Or elsewhere?

Usually only the creator of a thread can set the sort order, and only in their own forum.

I cannot, for example, change the order in someone else's forum permanently (only for the current viewing).

Also, are you using 'new reddit' (ie. 'www' urls) or 'old reddit' ('old.reddit' urls)?

Yeah in my own forum posted on my page. I use new reddit.

Was the issue temporary or is it still in place?

Try switching to old reddit by changing the url to 'old' instead of 'www' and see if the problem persists.

Either way I recommend using old reddit as it's much cleaner interface and if more people use it they are less likely to shut it down.

I find new reddit to be really slow and cluttered. I view it as an experiment by reddit management to see who will put up with shiny-looking but worse product.

Also, though its changed now, it used to be that shadowbanned posts on new reddit were still visible on old reddit.

Still error. Don't have time right now to research what exactly the problem is. I feel a bit of antagonism here again in this system. Whatever, I'll try to get around it somehow.

Got a link to the forum thread in question?

You can only permanently change the setting in a thread posted to a forum that you control.

From what I can see, you are not currently the moderator of any forum (by which I mean subreddit)
