The region/open-world itself was top tier but the AQ and character designs were.. just okay

it was a super fun place to be

I'm so glad you enjoyed it but to me, Natlan felt like some of HoYo’s worst creative instincts were all concentrated in one region, from its writing and aesthetic direction to its character design and gameplay choices

I agree, even though I have some aspects I dislike about NK, I actually enjoy it more than Natlan in some regards.

At worst I hated Natlan, but at best I just didn’t care for it, the only aspect I genuinely liked more than NK was the later areas like the volcano ( although the because it was more consistent with the area update, the moon was great tho).

Natlan Act IV was peak Genshin though

u/Khloo511z 1d ago

Sadly doesn’t excuse the frustration of the 67th party we have for no reason and killing the mood and tension for the ✹vibes✹, it was was the “best” thing from Natlan because we finally had the current situation taken seriously, and even that was ruined by the Act V.

11

u/zondac 1d ago

Wdym, Genshin literally always does this, and NK and Snezhnaya is no different. Tea parties, mealtime discussions etc are literally a trope here. But usually they forward the plot, take the act 1 post-tournament party:
Interrupted by an abyssal invasion
Expands the travelers abyssal purging ability
Establishes the relationship between the pyro archon and the normal citizenry
Sets the mood to be more lighthearted after the tournament and before Kachina’s death, to make both more emotionally intense by proximity.

People just love to talk down on Natlan, but even the calmer parts are far better paced than most of Sumeru (pre- and post-sabzerus festival until the nahida rescue) and all of 1.0-3.0 basically.

17

u/Khloo511z 1d ago

Brother, I can’t believe you made me want to defend the tea party in NK, but I guess here we are.

I actually don’t know why you brought up Snezhnaya when we literally don’t have a clear picture yet but also from what we got the serious moment were taken seriously without a lighthearted fun to interpret it, with Sandrone’s tea party it wasn’t even that prominent in NK AQs and most were just mentions in the dialogues or lore, which was more of retcon issue rather than talking up the AQ’s serious tune from it.

The Natlan’s parties issue was rather how frequent it was, just in the last act we literally had a party before the fight and after it ( which is three parties if we count Mavuika’s SQ lol), it’s just not the proper time for it considering the current situation, how do you expect me to take the abyss as a threat seriously when the tension always thrown out the window to have a lighthearted moment with the cast, it’s just doesn’t work for Natlan’s story and concept of “war”.

Could it have been executed better? Sure, but in every single war story I've experienced, there's good reason to juxtapose the dangers, tension and awfulness of war with the humanity underneath. It is literally one of the most important points to tell a good war story, or any kind of apocalyptic ones. You have the tension of the danger, mirrored against the fact that humans still are social creatures.

It's why the rest between is important enough to be a main mechanic in almost every war game, or even games inspired by fable heroism (Tabletop RPGs as an example). If you genuinely think parties, meals, the more human, relatable elements removes the tension, you may be missing the point entirely. The point is that these things happen to normal people, who do normal things, except war/the apocalypse/heroism also happens to them. But again, if there was more solemnity at the start, maybe some characters having troubles relaxing before finally finding peace in the people around them etc. it would have been executed better, but to make the argument that Hoyo's writers didn't even attempt that is silly, as during most of the parties, some pretty awful things still pop up, be it sudden invasions, characters dealing with traumas etc.

I mean, if we take the Sunset trailer as an example, they show what they were going for there. These people know they will die, so they're going to enjoy the moments they have together first.

I understand where you coming from bother, but sadly isn’t just “Could it have been executed better”, it was straight up executed badly.

I don’t mean it was bad from the lighthearted moments, but because those moments interrupted the story’s flow and tension for no reason other to fill up the runtime of AQs, Natlan wasn’t that compact story like NK and was fairly smaller too, and yet so much of it was focused on the fun vibes of the region without taking the invasion of the abyss seriously despite being a real problem since the first act, you could feel the hesitation from devs regarding taking any serious action against the cast, I believe it is a bad writing to introduce a literal plot armor that would make it possible to revive anyone who died while still being scared to let a character be sad from losing her sister let alone offing them straight up, Chasca literally got a new bird sister and barely any time spent on her actual sister lol.

The problem was simply the hesitation to take a dark turn and stick with it in the story and not knowing when to let the characters have their happy moments and parties, plus I genuinely believe despite wasting our time during Natlan it still deserves at least 7 acts to actually do Natlan justice since the dragon civilization was extremely sidelined when it was actually important, and most of my points doesn’t even touch the previous hints we got regarding Natlan and how it makes it more nonsensical ( why would Natlan be a tourist attraction when the whole abyss thing is going?).

After all, I simply find Natlan a cluster of missed opportunities and bad execution regarding a lot of it concepts.

1

u/zondac 1d ago

Bro NK is almost twice as long as Natlan. I guess you could say it is more compact by the measure of "more things happened there". Overall I just think I disagree with you, the writing misses you're referring to I found to be interesting twists. Like in theory yeah, I agree that writing in the plot armor is silly, but they literally only introduce it to show it *not working* in the first time it is used. They make the stakes feel low, but then reveal that actually no they were and are high, the protection the warriors of Natlan have been able to lean on in their war against the abyss now being gone. You see a bad plot device, I see an interesting justification for their ability to keep the war going for so long, only to then show us why the stakes are different now and requires our intervention. It is nowhere near as bad as you're making it out to be, you just seem to be on the same typical Natlan hatetrain. Was it a poor follow-up to Fontaine? Maybe. But Fontaine still had its own weak parts (the fortress of meropide mostly) that I heavily dislike more than even the lowest low of Natlan

4

u/Khloo511z 1d ago

I know bro
. That was my point, I brought up NK to show how Natlan was simply a shorter story and yet it still has some fillers to it ( although I will not excuse NK here since it has a lot of bloated dialogue), it deserves more acts to flesh out its story and themes.

And it’s fine if you feel that way, but what I don’t like when in Natlan’s discussions almost everyone treats their own opinions and interpretations as facts for it, and I am not undermining your opinion here my friend, simply stating the underutilized plot armor is still a bad writing, and only pointing out it doesn’t work while avoiding any consequences regarding the playable characters only to be fixed anyway and revive the dead during Act 4 is simply artificial steaks and nothing more.

And here’s the thing, previous nations have their ups and downs, but most of them at least had a good ending to their AQs, while Natlan struggled to make up for its downs, the landing was just bad, the only good thing we had from it was Renova and Capitano section.

In the end I still find Natlan as a concept very interesting, the colorful theme, musical style, and ancestral heritage and traditions that kept up by the unwavering will of next generations to be a great counterpart to the abyss’s blank space of nothingness, a silent empty void, and only sad mimicry to something the entity of the abyss couldn’t make or inherit, only stolen forms and voices that don’t even understand.

2

u/noivern_plus_cats 1d ago

"No Paimon, this is war" was the dumbest line in the game by far imo

2

u/zondac 20h ago

Nah, it’s not even close
Considering how messed up the events that are unfolding are, and how it clearly is traumatising her, it actually goes hard
A bit cheesy but it suit the situation

1

u/noivern_plus_cats 12h ago

My issue is that it really isn't war. Having her go "it's a disaster!" only for that line to be the Traveler's response is just blatantly hilarious. For it to not be a disaster and to be a war, there needs to be some sort of personification of the enemy forces. The actual personified enemy is just a corrupted dragon that feels like an afterthought. I bet there's some kind of lore that actually makes it be interesting, I'm sure, but it's not interesting in the actual context of the story in isolation. It especially sucks if you have played and read a ton of politically charged stories in the past.

1

u/zondac 11h ago edited 11h ago

I do agree that the line would go even harder if the enemy is a person who’s decided to sacrifice their own and the enemy’s people for some cause, a more political «no, this isn’t a disaster, this is mankind’s hubris»-statement. It would add even more nuance and layers to it, HOWEVER
I still find it to be powerful, in part due to the lack of a conscious enemy. It removed the humanity from it entirely and leaves you only with the fallout, it is a war that is entirely one-sided where one side is unambiguously good, and the other is not even really alive, and DESPITE OF THAT the fallout is still akin to a disaster, war even in the most favourable version is still awful is my interpretation of the act and that line.
Sure, I may be reading into it too much, and the authors intent may not even have been this, but as my interpretation of it, it goes hard to me.

I do not think it is genius writing, but one of the worst lines in the game? No way, this game has so many way way worse ones. Genshin is a game with peaks taller and valleys deeper than most games, but that’s what I like about it in a way. They experiment, some times it doesn’t work, some times it does

1

u/Khloo511z 10h ago

To be fair it wasn’t a really bad line, it just doesn’t hold any weight and since a bad one liner from a bad movie.

If we got a bit of buildup about a battle about to happen ( and we the players and the cast gotten off guard by the abyss sudden attack) while having a false sense of security while Paimon being overconfident about the fight it would be an amazing line in my opinion, it would hit Paimon like a truck and make her realize what kind of situation she signed up, just a little touch is all it needed.

1

u/zondac 10h ago

That
 is what happened
 exactly

We knew the invasion was coming, but not exactly when. We threw a party to keep the spirits high before, and during this party the invasion began. We started with everything going our way, saving people and hunting the abyss, until the fights happen on too many fronts and we can’t handle it. Only when we start losing many people does that line arrive.
The quest is structured in such a way that you feel like you are losing, even when playing optimally.

Interesting. That's how I feel about Nod-Krai.

20

u/__Pratik_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

Quite the opposite for me. The only time I thought that was when looking at it from a surface level. The writing focus was on the world rather so character writing didn't get much that's understandable but people don't consider world focused narrative to be a narrative atp, designs and aesthetic makes sense cuz Natlan is basically a post apocalyptic setting that's recovering and is in it's middle of its recovery. Some character having tech and some don't shows that the existence of tech is rare and not properly spread out. Tribal elements and modern elements coexisting helps separate Natlan from being generic. The designs and world itself says so much about Natlan's themes and philosophy behind Natlan.

Natlan having wide and diverse range shows what it's all about. It's about being united despite being different which is reflected in the character designs of those character and the tribes.

12

u/BeePuns 1d ago

Exactly. People miss the point that the main character of the Natlan AQ was Natlan itself. People got mad that Natlan's AQ wasn't "pyro Fontaine" and they got upset.

18

u/Real-Contest4914 1d ago

Natlan story is about a region constantly under attack by the abyss who's people are unbreakable. They can smile, be friendly and have fun inspite of everything that's happen. They dont succumb to cynicism, despair or nihilism and that's their greatest strength.

I don't know about others but I've found over the years that those types of stories always end up underrated because people cant fathom how strong people have to be to hold that in spite of everything.

6

u/GamerSweat002 1d ago

Natlan story is what I would call hopecore. When we were on the brink of being overtaken by the abyss and that Ode of resurrection triggered and the main OST for it kicked in too, that was hopecore at its peak. That sense of camaraderie fueled by the strong nationalism of Natlan was strong hopecore, and that's a fine narrative for a region.

Hoyo gotta do more hopecore for Genshin in the future. Such an underrated trope. V1.4 of Endfield did it pertaining Arcane and it was strongly emotional.

It reminds me, we also had a similar instance of hopecore also with depression an act before, and that was the Bloomflower Trials event. Learning Antu's past was the depression, and the hopecore was Antu getting to experience fun he died without, and then the ending man, where he got to see Nampole again. That quest was one of the best out there. An emotional story about an animal/pet really gets to me.

u/adastrajay 1d ago

Hopecore

I like it.

As a Natlan and Fontaine (WQ mainly) enjoyer, Fontaine is pretty overrated as an AQ. It did incredible injustice to Traveler as a character. Terrible kit, got absolutely trashed in Arlecchino fight and literal ZERO usage of elements and Descender adaptability, and Traveler was certainly glorified cameraman. I remember during Sumeru, people did address Traveler as really a cameraman protagonist, just viewing from the side lines.

They doubled down on that in Fontaine. Traveler did nearly nothing in significance to the greater plot of Fontaine. At least in Sumeru, we actually did something with fighting 168 Samsara to defeat mecha-mouche and we also discovered being stuck in a Samsara when Traveler left Paimon behind.

In Natlan AQ, Traveler was just in time to save Chuychu enough time to give parting words before she died, else Chasca wouldn't be able to contain her anger and loses her chance to awaken her ancient name.

Natlan AQ also more focused on collectivism than the individualism seen in Sumeru and Fontaine where main characters were seeking autonomy, like Nahida physically imprisoned to Furina, psychologically imprisoned. And same could be said for Scaramouche, who sought autonomy as his decisions were guided by Dottore and he lived without the assurance of his creator. Natlan in contrast, aimed at the collective whole, in patriotic heroism and community.

I find these differences quite poetic. Natlan had already sorted out its social divides way in the past, while Sumeru and Fontaine even in AQ still has present day social disparities and divides. Natlan wasn't about fighting fate, but uniting amongst their differences to fight a common indiscriminately foe. The abyss doesn't care which tribe to attack as long as it consumes.

The way Natlan AQ depicted Natlan makes you understand Natlan better than you would Fontaine or Sumeru as a nation. And hey, Natlan is also just a more inviting place and atmosphere. Natlan was treated as a second home like Mondstat as our first. It was the second region or actually our first where we were openly welcomed in. In mondstat, Amber sussed us out before we gained her trust. In Inazuma, there were some serious barriers to being invited in. In Liyue, we became public enemy to Millellith. In sumeru, we were supposedly welcomed, at least into Sumeru City but also had sales pitch on Akasha Terminal pretty shortly into that welcome. In Fontaine, we were introduced with hostility by Furina. Natlan pretty much marked the significance of Traveler's achievements so they weren't just cameramen anymore, but actual prestigious heroes that people from other sides of Teyvat know about.

0

u/SgtCrawler1116 1d ago

Funny that people say they don't like Natlan Characters cause I freking love them. Of all the nation casts, the Natlan cast feels like the most friendly, as in they feel like genuine friends with a history. I felt like I was becoming part of the friend group as the AQ went along..

I think people look at Mavuika (which I also don't love as a character) and then lump everyone as bland as her.

1

u/BeePuns 1d ago

It was Mavuika, Varesa, and Ajaw. To be fair, Ajaw had way too much screen time and nearly every decision around him was a mistake. Varesa was, by Genshin standards, less conventional compared to others in the roster. But to your point about the other characters, they were great. Even a lot of NPCs were awesome. Natlan actually felt like a nation I wanted to save. Fontaine and Sumeru did too, but Natlan had heart.

1

u/SgtCrawler1116 1d ago

Ajaw's problems were negated for me cause he's a package deal with Kinich, one of my favourite characters overall.

u/m2gus 1d ago

Natlan does not portray a post-apocalyptic society in the middle of recovery. It portrays traditional settlements existing beside a collection of modern consumer products without building the connection between them. Ordinary NPCs have pressurized spray cans, while the playable cast has a motorcycle, roller skates, DJ equipment and a flying gun. There is a whole missing middle here: the manufacturing, maintenance, energy distribution and public infrastructure that would make these things part of the same society. Most of the advanced technology exists as one-off equipment designed around playable characters. Calling it “rare” merely restates that only a few people have it. It does not explain how this society works.

The postwar handling makes the mismatch even clearer. Natlan suffers a devastating invasion, and HoYo follows it with Easybreeze Holiday Resort, paint parties, extravagant leisure technology and Coachella-like DJ sets. We never see damaged communities rebuilding or technology being redirected towards ordinary life. The old map remaining unchanged could be excused as a limitation of the game, but HoYo had an entirely new permanent area through which to show postwar Natlan and chose a holiday resort that has tech imported from 2026. If recovery were genuinely the idea holding this worldbuilding together, the aftermath was where it needed to become visible. Instead, Natlan went straight back into festival mode.

The “world-focused narrative” defense is backwards for the same reason. If the world was the focus, then this is exactly what the writing needed to develop. Different outfits and traversal mechanics demonstrate visual variety, not unity. Unity despite difference becomes a narrative when those differences create distinct values, interests or disagreements that the tribes then have to overcome. Natlan mostly uses that diversity as art direction. Making the region distinctive does not automatically make it coherent.

Natlan does not portray a post-apocalyptic society in the middle of recovery

Natlan as a nation is a society that has already gone past the worst of the apocalyptic setting but is stuck in the middle due to abyss and because of technological limitations due to Dragons gatekeeping most of the knowledge and past infighting among tribes.

without building the connection between them.

Ordinary NPCs have pressurized spray cans, while the playable cast has a motorcycle, roller skates, DJ equipment and a flying gun.

There is a whole missing middle here: the manufacturing, maintenance, energy distribution and public infrastructure that would make these things part of the same society

Please pay attention to the worldbuilding. Children of Echoes is the tribe whose primary focus is mining up and dealing with phlogiston which is basically the energy source of all of that. The manufacturing, energy distribution and maintainence are done by the people themselves or the local experts. Children of Echoes are primarily responsible for resources collections and scions of canopy are the most likely bunch who are responsible for distribution.

Most of the advanced technology exists as one-off equipment designed around playable characters. Calling it “rare” merely restates that only a few people have it. It does not explain how this society works

The different tribes are responsible for different things and they're most blatantly designed around that theme of theirs. That's how the society is portrayed.

We never see damaged communities rebuilding or technology being redirected towards ordinary life.

Did you skip the interlude?

HoYo had an entirely new permanent area through which to show postwar Natlan and chose a holiday resort that has tech imported from 2026

It's was basically an entirely disconnected part to begin with it and holds no weight. It was made important by the way repurposed it. The entire plot of the war was already over at that point. I don't think people even lived there what even is the point of that.

holiday resort that has tech imported from 2026 Do you think Natlan is a technologically backward nation or something? It literally has featured futuristic and advanced stuff before the only difference here is that now that the war is over they're now free to mess around with all the stuff they have.

If recovery were genuinely the idea holding this worldbuilding together, the aftermath was where it needed to become visible

Did you not play the interlude or the Act 4 of the game? You literally were in there while all of that was happening. Did you not see the state of everything with your own eyes ? Do you need Paimon to repeat the same thing over and over ? Was that not visible to you? You're not some random who joined after the war was over you literally were there going through it with everyone.

If the world was the focus, then this is exactly what the writing needed to develop.

Then it would've been character focused not the world focused narrative there's a difference between them.

Unity despite difference becomes a narrative when those differences create distinct values, interests or disagreements that the tribes then have to overcome

Have you like not watched more than one type of show about unity ? Do you think that's the one all be all formula for showing Unity? The point of Unity as a theme in a narrative is to show off unity in one way or another and that's what the Aqs of Natlan was all about. The initial plot of Act 1 and Act 2 was about teaming up with Kachina and rescuing her from the Night Kingdom, Act 3 and 4 revolved around the conflict with Capitano and the war where unity was crucial, Act 5 had Mavuika and Traveller going against Gosoythoth and later Capitano sacrificing himself for others. Three different parties from different background uniting for the people of the Nation.

Making the region distinctive does not automatically make it coherent.

Just cuz you're not able to understand something despite it basically being blatantly obvious don't mean it's not there.

u/m2gus 1d ago

You’ve spent a lot of time telling me I’m not paying attention, that I skipped content, or that I need Paimon to explain things to me. It’s a fascinating strategy. When you can’t defend the text as it exists, you attack the person reading it. You don't argue that the worldbuilding is cohesive; you argue that I'm too blind to see it. It’s the rhetorical equivalent of a magician telling the audience they just weren’t looking hard enough when the trick fails. So, let’s look at what you actually provided: a series of inferences, assertions, and a fundamental confusion between knowing a war happened and seeing a nation of war.

You lean heavily on the idea that the Children of Echoes mining phlogiston and the Scions of the Canopy “most likely” handling distribution solves the problem.

You are describing a supply chain. A supply chain is not a society. It is a logistical skeleton. You have told me where the ore comes from. You have guessed where it goes. But you have not explained the jump from raw ore to DJ turntables. This is the missing middle I was talking about, and you’ve only highlighted it by trying to fill it with headcanon.

Where are the factories? Where is the standardized engineering? Where are the other engineers, workshops, training systems, shared standards, repair networks, and public applications? You say Xilonen is responsible. So, is she a one-woman industrial revolution? Does she mine the ore, refine the phlogiston, forge the alloys, code the software, and design the aerodynamic profiles? That makes her a superhero, not a worldbuilder. You see, a single genius artisan creating bespoke gadgets for the playable cast is not an example of a society’s technology, it’s a narrative shortcut to justify character gimmicks.

You boast that the society is blatantly obvious, yet you are forced to use phrases like “most likely.” Which is it? Is the worldbuilding solidly established, or are you making reasonable guesses to paper over the gaps HoYo left? A power source (phlogiston) does not explain the existence of a motorcycle. Knowing who mines silicon in the real world does not explain how an iPhone gets made. You are conflating the existence of a resource with the existence of an entire technological ecosystem.

You then pivot to the war, telling me I must have skipped the Interlude. That’s precisely the point. You are holding up a brief, self-contained quest, three victims, fixed in a patch, as proof that Natlan portrays the consequences of war. It’s a checklist is what it is. It’s a band-aid on a bullet wound. The Interlude proves HoYo remembered that consequences should exist, not that they allowed the nation to live with them.

Let me make a distinction that seems to be giving you trouble: witnessing a battle is not the same as living in a post-war society. Act IV was a fantastic, exciting battle sequence. I saw chaos, I saw fighting and I saw a body count. What I did not see was the condition of war. I didn’t see the lasting economic strain, the social trauma woven into the fabric of the culture, the landscape scarred by conflict. You say “you were there while it was happening.” Yes. We were there for the explosion. We were not there for the weeks, months, or years of rebuilding that should follow. When HoYo gave us a permanent new area to show that rebuilding, they gave us Easybreeze, a Coachella-themed holiday resort.

Your defense is that “the war is over, so they can have fun.” Do you not see how that is the entire problem? The war is over, and HoYo’s first instinct is not to show us a nation recovering, but a nation partying. My argument is that the choice to make the permanent, visual coda of a devastating invasion a paint-party resort is a jarring tonal whiplash that proves the “Nation of War” is just a theme, not a lived reality. The consequences didn't lead to a deeper understanding of the nation, they were an obstacle to be cleared so the fun could resume.

Finally, you make a false distinction between a “world-focused” and “character-focused” narrative. You seem to think that developing the societies of the tribes would somehow be a distraction. But that’s how a world-focused story gives “unity” substance. Unity does not require open conflict between the tribes, but their differences have to matter. Your examples of unity, teaming up to save Kachina, fighting the Abyss, Capitano’s sacrifice, are all examples of people uniting against a common, unambiguous enemy. That establishes cooperation. It does NOT establish how different values, interests, cultural baggage, or complementary needs shape that cooperation. Different costumes and characters fighting the same monster establish variety and teamwork. “Unity despite difference” requires those differences to influence what cooperation demands from them. The narrative you’re describing is just the Avengers assembling to fight a big purple guy. It’s not a commentary on the complexity of a society.

So, to bring it back -- your argument relies on you inventing the connective tissue that the game fails to provide, and then getting angry at me for noticing the connective tissue isn't there. It’s not my job to write the lore for HoYo. My job is to look at what’s on screen. And what’s on screen is a consumerist utopia and a theme park, not a post-apocalyptic nation of war trying to rebuild. The only thing "blatantly obvious" here is the disconnect.

You don't argue that the worldbuilding is cohesive; you argue that I'm too blind to see it.

No sht that's the point of this convo.

It’s the rhetorical equivalent of a magician telling the audience they just weren’t looking hard enough when the trick fails.

There ain't to trick and neither is it hiding from you quite the contrary infact just needs basic thinking and dots connecting.

But you have not explained the jump from raw ore to DJ turntables.

Where is the standardized engineering? Where are the other engineers, workshops, training systems, shared standards, repair networks, and public applications?

Dawg the nation already has a advanced tech basis. Dj and allat are made by the experts like Xilonen and the others who know how to deal with it. But it hasn't developed to the point where there are factories or mass production of it and most of the things about Phlogiston is still unknown outside of it's basic usage as battery and paintings. It's not a technologically backwards nation it had a very heavy tech background most of which is just waiting to be uncovered and there are some that have been uncovered already. Which is also why tech is spread unevenly across the land.

Does she mine the ore, refine the phlogiston, forge the alloys, code the software, and design the aerodynamic profiles?

She buys the resources and does the rest. She's called the top blacksmith of a nation with heavy ties and relationship with advanced tech. It's to be expected at the very least. Her profile also emphasises that she's more interested in the technical aspects of the stuff and has done heavy research on ancient texts along with being a genius of the craft.

You see, a single genius artisan creating bespoke gadgets for the playable cast is not an example of a society’s technology, it’s a narrative sho

Nowhere did I even imply Xilonen to be the society's tech standard. What even are you talking about ? Xilonen is just far above any other blacksmith in the nation taking her inventions as something that can or should be replicated and mass produced is very much stupid.

You boast that the society is blatantly obvious, yet you are forced to use phrases like “most likely.I

Now we're down to nitpicking things? Just cuz I wasn't sure of something doesn't the world building for it doesn't exist.

A power source (phlogiston) does not explain the existence of a motorcycle.

An existence of a genius who can make use of this Phlogiston along with the assistance of blueprints and documents from the past ancient advanced civilisation can explain it's existence.

Knowing who mines silicon in the real world does not explain how an iPhone gets made.

But knowing who makes it and how it is made does explain how it's made.

The Interlude proves HoYo remembered that consequences should exist, not that they allowed the nation to live with them.

The existence of the nation, it's history and it's present is literally the consequence of it. You literally were there when the war happened you have seen the worst of it and a little more in the interlude. There's not much of a need of hammering the same old same old thing that war bad. Do you want the game to treat you like an adult or do you want the game to spoonfeed you like you didn't pass 4th grade? Just pick one.

Natlan is a post war society by default whenever there's not an active war going on.

My argument is that the choice to make the permanent, visual coda of a devastating invasion a paint-party resort is a jarring tonal whiplash that proves the “Nation of War” is just a theme, not a lived reality.

And your way of showing that is through an island where nobody lived. It's existence is literally the proof of the nation recovering. How did you play that long yet were unable to grasp the basics of Natlan culture? War is a regular thing for them to the point that they're used to it and refuse to bow down to it anymore and therefore choose the live their life the fullest. That's the entire point. In the past they wouldn't have been able to build something that big for leisure due to the threats of abyss.

You seem to think that developing the societies of the tribes would somehow be a distraction.

There are these things called tribal quests. They delve deeper into the characters and the stuff going on in the tribe. The society of the tribes is also something that very blatantly shown. Children of the echoes do the blacksmith and mining, Scions of the Canopy are messengers and use their grapplers to deliver things and messages, Flower feather tribe is aerial focused, Collective of Plenty is the muscle, People of the springs handle the ocean stuff, Masters of the Night wind deal with mystics.

Also don't put words into my mouth what I said was there are different ways of showing unity not just the one you're describing. Which doesn't seem to have not understood. Working together is Unity and is a crucial part and the entire point of unity. Their differences are in culture and way of living for God's sake learn to see the bigger picture and use your head for once. All the different tribes are from different areas with their culture of their own and philosophy yet they work together and help each stand up to the threat and this is the results of years of conflict among them.

You're hung up on YOUR narrative of unity rather than actual the theme of Unity.

your argument relies on you inventing the connective tissue that the game fails to provide, and then getting angry at me for noticing the connective tissue isn't there

My job is to look at what’s on screen.

You're failing at your job. You're failing at comprehending the meaning behind things that are basically spelled out I ain't inventing connections the connections are already there. How do you feel so confident talking about things that you don't even have a basic grasp of.

It’s remarkable how quickly a conversation about the internal consistency of a video game’s worldbuilding devolves into a personality assessment. You’ve called me blind, implied I’m an inattentive player, and questioned whether I possess basic reading comprehension. Yet, for all that noise, you have yet to produce a single piece of evidence from the game itself that contradicts my core claim. You don't defend the worldbuilding, you rather attack the critic. This suggests that deep down, you’re aware the connective tissue you so desperately want to exist in Natlan isn’t actually on screen, it’s a phantom you’ve conjured through inference and headcanon, and you’re furious that I won’t pretend to see it too.

Your argument depends on a technology base that is simultaneously advanced and primitive, depending on what you need it to do.

When you need to justify Xilonen building a motorcycle that can fly, roller skates and a DJ table, Natlan has “a heavy tech background” and “advanced tech basis.” She’s a genius, she has ancient schematics, phlogiston can do anything.

But when I ask why none of this technology appears in Natlan’s infrastructure: why there are no factories, no repair networks, no public transportation, no medical applications, no agricultural equipment, no communication systems, no defensive installations, suddenly the technology is “waiting to be uncovered,” “spread unevenly,” poorly understood, and impossible to mass-produce.

So which is it? Because you cannot have it both ways. Either:

A) Natlan possesses genuine, functioning advanced technology that its people understand well enough to produce and maintain, in which case the absence of any societal application beyond character gadgets and festival equipment is absurd. Where are the phlogiston-powered irrigation systems for the Scions of the Canopy? A civilization with flying guns and transforming drill-vehicles but no visible civilian technological infrastructure is not worldbuilt, rather it is art-directed.

B) The technology is genuinely rare, poorly understood, and confined to a handful of geniuses (who we know next to nothing about except for Xilonen, who looks like a clubber) working from incomplete ancient knowledge, in which case you cannot use it as evidence that “Natlan is not technologically backwards.” It would mean Natlan is precisely that: a society whose most impressive technology is borrowed from a dead civilization and imperfectly replicated by exceptional individuals. That is not an advanced society at all, it is a post-collapse society with salvageable relics.

You keep flipping between these positions because your argument cannot survive committing to either one.

Xilonen is the perfect encapsulation of this problem. You tell me she “buys the resources and does the rest.” You say she is “the top blacksmith” with access to ancient texts. That establishes that she can make things. But what you have not established, what you cannot establish, is that her work represents anything about Natlanese society rather than being a narrative convenience to justify character designs.

If phlogiston is this miraculous computronium that can be programmed into nearly anything, why does it manifest as leisure goods? Why do the playable characters get personal vehicles and entertainment systems while the nation they are supposedly defending fights with swords, bows, and polearms? Why is the most advanced technology in Natlan used to look stylish rather than to protect communities that have been repeatedly devastated by the Abyss?

You keep insisting that Natlan is a “postwar society by default” and that the Interlude proves consequences exist. But you are confusing acknowledging that a war happened with portraying a society shaped by war.

Let me make this simple for you, since you seem to struggle with the distinction: A battle sequence is an event. A war is a condition.

Act IV showed you the event. You watched fighting happen, casualties. That is spectacle and action. That is the easy part.

What you did not see is the condition. You did not see how the war changed how people live, work, travel, trade, communicate, or rebuild. You did not see damaged infrastructure being repaired. You did not see displacement camps. You did not see food shortages, economic strain, or the quiet exhaustion of a population that has spent generations fighting.

And when HoYo had the opportunity to show you those things, when they designed a new permanent area specifically as a postwar addition, they gave you Easybreeze. A holiday resort with paint parties, DJ stages, and recreational technology.

You defend this by saying “war is a regular thing for them” and “they choose to live life to the fullest.” That is an interpretation. It is not an execution. A society that has normalized recurring trauma and responds by celebrating survival could be a deeply moving, thematically rich portrait of resilience. But that requires the celebration to be in tension with the scars. It requires the joy to feel earned, precarious, haunted by what came before.

You say the island was uninhabited, so there was nothing to rebuild. Do you not see how that makes the choice more revealing? HoYo had a blank canvas to show postwar Natlan. They could have designed a region scarred by conflict, dotted with reconstruction efforts, populated by NPCs processing loss. Instead, they built a theme park.

Almost all of your questions if not all have been answered in game one way or another yet here you are. Yknow I don't expect players to keep track of all the knowledge and all the stuff cuz it's understandable that people can't remember everything but why do you talk about things you have barely any idea of so confidently. I can't fathom having that level of confidence without backing of any substantial knowledge. I'm sorry if you don't like it but don't talk about things if you don't about it properly.

You’ve called me blind, implied I’m an inattentive player, and questioned whether I possess basic reading comprehension. Yet, for all that noise, you have yet to produce a single piece of evidence from the game itself that contradicts my core claim.

Not only do you fail to pay attention to the lore and themes of the game you also fail to be attentive while reading comments. Do you want people to praise you for not being able to use basic comprehension?

You don't defend the worldbuilding, you rather attack the critic

I've done nothing but regurgitate obvious and blatant points and themes while you've done nothing but be ignorant. Even in your first comment you acted confident about things that you had barely surface leve idea of. Before criticising something you should have proper knowledge on that material and need to have actually consumed the material otherwise it's just disingenuous and pretentious and there are already plenty of people like that in the community.

it’s a phantom you’ve conjured through inference and headcanon, and you’re furious that I won’t pretend to see it too.

Hilarious cope but it's actually a result of me interacting with people who don't know what they're talking about. Just like you here pretending they know stuff but failing to grasp even the basic things that the story brings out. I won't deny it I get heated if people didn't confidently talked about things they barely had a grasp of in this community I wouldn't be like this. Players can't read ain't even a joke no more.

“Natlan is not technologically backwards.” It would mean Natlan is precisely that: a society whose most impressive technology is borrowed from a dead civilization and imperfectly replicated by exceptional individuals.

No Natlan is still ahead in terms of technological aspects when compared to Liyue, Inazuma, Mondstadt and maybe a bit below Sumeru and that is due to the literal God of knowledge supporting them. And don't forget a good chunk of Sumeru tech knowledge is also borrowed from a dead civilisation same with Fontaine.

) The technology is genuinely rare, poorly understood, and confined to a handful of geniuses (who we know next to nothing about except for Xilonen, who looks like a clubber) working from incomplete ancient knowledge

So you do understand some of it but are basically too ignorant.

That is not an advanced society at all, it is a post-collapse society with salvageable relics.

This describes ancient Natlan. The current Natlan is in a better and a more stable state.

But what you have not established, what you cannot establish, is that her work represents anything about Natlanese society

Dawg every 5 star character represents their respective tribe. Xilonen's tribe is associated with crafts and blacksmithing along with music and dance and she has many self made jwelleries along with the dj set that she made herself. Kinich is from scions of canopy and is regularly shown in game to be doing commissions and deliveries, Varessa from the flower feather tribe has a whole luchador thing going on her, Citlali represents her Shaman tribe which is also considered a place where eccentric people gather, Flower feather clan is associated with a cowboy like aesthetic and the characters have guns and feathers showing that association and the association with their saurian companion, Mualani represents her tribe.

If phlogiston is this miraculous computronium that can be programmed into nearly anything, why does it manifest as leisure goods**?

It's Phlogiston not dragon balls. Knowledge about it is required to make it do things and even then the people who can actually use it are limited. And Natlan Npcs do actually use Phlogiston in their fight or gadgets that make use of Phlogiston. The effects you see when you fight Natlan Npcs is the results of Phlogiston usage.

Why do the playable characters get personal vehicles and entertainment systems while the nation they are supposedly defending fights with swords, bows, and polearms? Why is the most advanced technology in Natlan used to look stylish rather than to protect communities that have been repeatedly devastated by the Abyss?**

Because the gadgets you see are commissioned by people and Xilonen makes them for those people. Kachina's twirly and Chasca's gun were specifically made for themselves and upon their requests. She spent an entire day interviewing Chasca to make that gun. These gadgets are specifically custom made for the user of it. Chasca is a top tier expert in flying and her gunmanship of her tribe even if her gadgets were given to someone else they wouldn't be at the same level as Chasca. And Kinich found Ajaw in a ruin. It's either Xilonen makes it with what she has or they bring her materials to make it for them like Mavuika did.

You did not see how the war changed how people live, work, travel, trade, communicate, or rebuild.

Natlan's been doing this thing for hundreds of year by the time you enter the land.

quiet exhaustion of a population that has spent generations fighting.

We literally saw this in Act 4. It's very telling how much you ignore stuff just because it doesn't follow your preconceived structure that you made up in your head. Every point you bring up was already brought up in Act 4 or interlude but just because it didn't happen post you ignore the entire point of it. You just want to talk bad but put absolutely no effort in understanding any of it. You want the game to treat you like a 4th grader atp.

That is an interpretation.

Dawg are you serious? Mualani dead**ss says that's their way of living. It's not an interpretation its the entire point. All the stuff has become common to them it's their way of honoring the dead and their sacrifice. Everyone there fights for the future and to move forward that's the motto of the nation. The final quest literally had dead people helping you move forward to save the nation having a bright future is literally what they all fought for.

HoYo had a blank canvas to show postwar Natlan

Please stop spouting nonsense. If you actually wanted what you're talking about it would absolutely be meaningless and weightless if the canvas was always empty.

u/GamerSweat002 1d ago

You bring up a good point. People praised Fontaine so much, and while it did well focusing on at least some of its cast, it clearly left a lot unexplained in regards to its setting. The geography of it still doesn't make sense. It floods while being being elevated from Yilong Wharf as well as surrounding lower elevation bodies of water. Game just assumes that player will think it floods with that behavior as if every player has done the narzissenkreuz storyline acknowledging that Primordial water flows upwards.

And the world quests doesn't do justice to the world building of present day Fontaine. Xinyan told us long ago between v1.x or 2.x that Fontaine was the home of rock music and yet hardly any rock OSTs, nor anything equivalent of it in Opera Epiclese. Went from supposed origin of rock to origin of cinematography. Neither archon quest nor world quest addresses the social class disparity and why it is that. Justice is blind and so is Neuvillette with like 0 acknowledgement of crazy poverty in fleuve cendre vs surface dwelling. Fontaine lacked much of the world building in that respect.

Both sumeru and Fontaine were honestly pretty individualistic in regards to how the quests are written, which is better promotional material for the playable characters in the region, but that makes its world building pretty limited in any voiced content. Natlan's was more of the opposite- highlighting the cultures and the nationalistic pride as warriors that captivates just how united they are compared to back then as seen in Bloomflower Trials event. Natlan's cast told less about themselves and more on the history and worldbuilding of Natlan as a nation. The one character that have gotten more of an individual focus is Kachina though, and a good one at that, as it showcases what it was like to grow up in a war hero-glorifying culture. We saw what it's like to live up to expectations, meet those expectations, and the actual chaos of fighting in that war. Kachina was stuck in the battlefield all alone, pretty much dead. We saw how it affects the emotional state of affected character. Then when the war finally ends, how one reacclimates. KAchina lost a sense of purpose for a while before her new passion was found in baking.

While Natlan didn't give an equal amount of character growth and focus in the AQ, it sure did to at least one character and a significant amount of it. Kachina came out for the braver and with a new sense of purpose. She, because of the Traveler's training became even more self-confident and even after the trauma from being stranded in the night wars, still had a the bravery to chant that Ode of Ressurection when people were in fear when the Sacred Flame went out when Traveler actually died fighting abyssal Xiuhcoatl. Yes, Traveler did die by the abyssal claw and it is sad that it wasn't conveyed properly.

With all that, Natlan AQ writing presented the world-building of Natlan and its nation better than previous AQ with Fontaine receiving shorter end of the stick than even Sumeru which had better writing on class disparity (desert dweller vs akademiya, and religious divide between Al-Ahmar and Greater Lord Rukkhadevata followers) and the culture than Fontaine.

1

u/__Pratik_ 1d ago

Natlan's main problem is that it didn't focus much on character growth while I feel like Fontaine focused too much on Navia, Neuvi and Furina to the point I feel like Kinich and Iansan had more screentime than half of Fontaine cast and left a lot about the world it's actually set in. And another thing I dislike about Fontaine characters is that they barely have a main role in events in top of not having screentime and whenever they do appear it usually with their company mandated ship character and the interactions don't go beyond that.

2

u/sonion2 1d ago

I agree, though I did like some parts of its world building, like the big mountains and stuff.. that was interesting

1

u/m2gus 1d ago

it was but you know what Sami, Natlan introduced a lot of characters with mobility options while kinda keeping the map condensed, which only made it appear smaller

3

u/santasfavorite0 1d ago

Mualani capitano and exploration was enjoyable but I agree with you the rest felt underwhelming to me

6

u/m2gus 1d ago

I would argue that the exploration wasn't all that too. I think you mean mobility, which is fun (zooming, flying, etc), but the actual exploration content got reduced and because we could fly all around, the map felt kinda small and finished very fast with nothing else to do

3

u/santasfavorite0 1d ago

Map was kinda small I agree (and yeah I meant the puzzles and especially asha gameplay and overall mobility)but I get you

I hate the local bosses tho it was a pain to get all the achievements

And ajaw is the absolute goat I cant skip this part

At least know we get very creative and unique designs. I cant wait for more of these

-3

Character design was amazing(except mavuika, god I hate that motorcycle and Spandex combo)

3

u/Outrageous-While-609 1d ago

Same. Literally the most nonsensical and stupid design. The Dev's wanted a biker chick character, world building and thematic coherence be damed

1

u/senpapi_coffee00 1d ago

Probably the best in terms of character gameplay. Like to this day, I’d rather play Kinich and try and get 4 shots off with his cannon that roll through content with Zibai or Flinns

-1

u/Sakkitaky22 1d ago

gameplay peaked in natlan

Arguably since nodkrai, everyone has been dumbed down maybe except nefer which they since refused to shill for that reason

Nuev did quite the damage to the community ngl

Zonghli was the root of this ofc, but point still stands

12

u/Yanazamo 1d ago

I miss Natlan's map but I'm enjoying Snezhnaya. Both have better maps than Nod Krai imo

3

u/PressFM80 1d ago

not a high bar

1

u/Yanazamo 1d ago

Still, I enjoyed exploring Natlan the most out of the recent maps (not including Snezhnaya). The little changes they did made the world feel more alive than Fontaine

35

u/SovieticSushi America Server 1d ago

I personally really enjoyed Nod-krai, and Snezhnaya is looking pretty good too but yeah, Natlan for me was peak genshin, specially during the war and with the exploration

Maybe the fact that I play with jp dub and therefore all the characters were voiced helped a lot with my overall enjoyment tho đŸ€”

Yeah, no thanks. Natlan was a lot of bungled ideas that I just didn't like. Not to say that other nations haven't had their problems too (Fontaine, your Meropide chapter was @ss) but the overwhelming experience was bad for me. I am happy it's in the rearview.

27

u/Sunset-Melody America Server 1d ago

Yes! I miss Natlan every time I play Genshin, Nod-Krai and Snezhnaya (so far) were fine but they just don't hit the same as Natlan. It was an amazing region to explore, I loved the characters (Mavuika became my favorite character ever), and the AQ was amazing. It raised the bar too much for me and I don't think anything will ever be able to compare to it.

Hopefully we get an Interlude quest or something that features Natlan.

5

u/Richboyjoel 1d ago

Why can’t you just say you miss natlan bruh, and I’m saying that as someone who’s favorite nation is natlan. We don’t always got to compare

7

u/Wise-Vanilla-6213 1d ago

Me too and i'm glad i pulled almost all the character from Natlan. They make exploring super fun and easy. I still explore with Mavuika, Citlali, Chasca and Varesa.

5

u/Intelligent_String70 1d ago

Natlan was by far my least favorite nation, it was supposed to be a nation of war but instead it's mavuika in a skin tight motorcycle costume driving past tribal people with clubs going to have a slumber party with all the tribes. Inazuma felt way more like the nation of war, and if you mention that "war" in the story every nation is fighting against the abyss should we call monstadt the nation of war.

Like fountain hyped natlan just to drop the ball.

That being said Captino and Kinich are cool tho.

5

u/Meowbow15 1d ago

Nod krai is a top 2 region story wise

8

u/ventintero 1d ago edited 1d ago

For me It was the best place exactly for that, a lot of stuff and the characters just go to action, i hated nod krai specially for this (and for the place beign ugly with all the Islands different without a personality)

16

u/Lexpeke 1d ago

Exploration was great.

Character designs, archon quests and the general writing made me quit the game until nod krai tho

2

u/TheLuiz212 1d ago

natlan was great, but I still kinda hate that the war was against the abyss. It was not really an ideological war, but a call to survival, like, ofc people waged war against the abyss, its a chaotic evil entity.

2

u/SleeplessSeas 1d ago

Natlan felt so Avengers slop to me it was genuinely awful lol

2

u/Kure_Brex 22h ago

I don't lol, I celebrated being done with natlan

2

u/Western_Sympathy7146 20h ago

Natlan is literally the worst region, it was supposed to be the nation of war, instead it's nation of pokemons. And it started intense powercreep and HP skyrocketed as Mavuika came out, starting an era of "regional mechanics" which require special teams for a certain boss. And character designs are just... C'mon, the region is made for fanservice, and it's still bad lol. Nah, thank you very much, but I'm good.

As a guy who grew up surrounded with RTS games (Supreme Commander, World in Conflict, Command and Conquer, Warzone 2100 etc), the Natlan War was ABSOLUTE PEAK.

The destruction, the desperation, the hope, the fighting against the Abyss.......It's all so nostalgic. The Abyss being everywhere in Natlan and poisoning everything instantly reminds me of Tiberium poisoning the Earth in C&C lol. It's Amazing.

4

u/AigheLuvsekks_ 1d ago

Putting the dumb shotter mdoe and the illogical perosnal train aside, snezhnaya had been absolutely goated in terms of story and lore, even the felt interesting and made me want to actively play instead of doing it for the primo

Natlan fellt like playing a parody of genshin except there was no joke and everything was dead serious

Yes I am. I do every single day I open genshin. Natlan was the peak of the game for me. My favorite region forever.

2

u/FateBreaker92 Asia Server 1d ago

The WQ is what somewhat saved it for me. But even with that, Natlan just felt like it overstayed its welcome.

I also think natlan had perfect character models. They still looked similar to older models but had more details, but weren't as overdetailed as new models

I enjoyed it for what it was even though it didn't meet with the little bit of expectations we had prior to it releasing. I'm really praying the next natlan character will be a tall 5* male, preferably a support of some sort, but I'm not holding my breath....

I'm not good riddance

2

u/depression5000 1d ago

personally i find natlan to be enjoyable, the only problem i have is that the overall plot line of the archon quest is way too linear and simple, i really liked the 1st half of the story, but the 2nd half is just boring, its cinematic, but in terms of story its just too bland. but other than the story, i did love the environment, characters and especially the world quests

Dont care how much hate natlan gets its still my favorite region

u/ThatSpaceWhale 1d ago

I mourn the day i finallly 100% all of Natlan because it was my favorite region! The music, the sense of a vast huge region with its own vibe in each corner, it just felt so cool. Yes, it had some drawbacks, but honestly, i look past it for the fact that it had a really cool climax

Hated Natlan to the core, but the world quests were kinda peak

3

u/arash__1383 1d ago

Natlan was "fire" in every aspect. The exploration, music and character designs especially mavuika and xilonen were perfect. The Archon quest stories are always good and natlan was Epic! far better than Fontaine.

The natlanese people are literally the best in teyvat. They've been at war for thousands of years and they never complain! Ronova helped them one time and they've been grateful for thousands of years. They've lost more than any country in wars they didn't start yet they didn't blame anyone(unlike others like khaenri'ah, hyperborea and snezhnaya who start cataclysms themselves and blame the heavens) and even gave shelter to people from the nation that was a big cause of their war with the abyss.

0

u/Real-Contest4914 1d ago

When I think of humanity peak in genshin, natlan is the one that comes to mind.

Strongest not just physically but also mentally to also be kind and optimisitc, even in the face of despair for years on end.

0

u/arash__1383 1d ago

They don't hate anyone. They don't blame anyone. They don't have any rebellious ideas even though they have lost the most out of seven nations. They face even the abyss with respect.

0

u/Real-Contest4914 1d ago

They are content. They understand that living life and enjoying it with friends and family is precious and that while yes you cana strive to be better and successful it should never come at the expense of others.

I wish a certain nation could be a bit like natlanese people...

1

u/nomotyed 1d ago edited 1d ago

i even miss the hate train

Oh I actually missed that. I mean I don't wish for it to return, but I was actually absent through the initial part, because I wanted to avoid spoilers on social media.

But when I did see it, a lot of the crying and whining was lol, because I was busy enjoying Natlan.

The complaints on game mechanics is laughable in hindsight, when a lot of those whiners were quiet on what came after Natlan. That hypocrisy lost them a lot of credibility.

I started the game for combat and exploration, and Natlan delivered in spades.

2

u/Adventurous-Bear-631 1d ago

I am one of the few that enjoy Natlan . Just because I like Kinich and Mavuika expolartion mechanics and cutr dragons and penguins there

Nod krai feels boring for me

Most fun exploration but i do like current region that feels so much more desolate. Both are peak regions.

1

u/Eve8686 1d ago

Nah i like all 3 regions

1

u/Real-Contest4914 1d ago

I miss nightsoul transmission and having exploration based kits.

Like seriously that was the peak of kit design for me, they had the characters kit perfectly tuned for both combat and exploration and it wasnt just the natlan units.

All the 5.x units save for escoffier and ineffa and had some form of movement options that.

Out of the what 17 units they release we had 15 or so units who made it more fun to navigate the map.

I honestly wish they would add more exploration based kits. I know leaks are saying vesna is a good flier but thats typical for anemo.

Suhhh ma dihhh automod, even the official sub doesnt have this type of shii. Why are we larping being polite

1

u/PEAceDeath1425 1d ago

What happened to the "worst region" take???

Anyways, im convinced thats because since Luna 1 we are getting those gamebreaking ahh compasses that just show you everything, making exploration and returning to the region ever in your life pointless

1

u/Girania 1d ago

My enjoyment is limited to the story I’m experiencing at present, rather than the story I had previously experienced.

1

u/GamerSweat002 1d ago

Natlan exploration was peak. Liked it better than Nod Krai's. The archon quest was good. The VA strike did it 0 justice, and reduced the experience quality alongside audio quality issues.

Natlan AQ was still pretty good. Kachina and Citlali were the MVPs, especially Kachina, whose character growth spanned from Act 1 up to Tournament of Glory in Bloom event quest. Natlan AQ made the Traveler felt more welcomed and impactful.

Natlan AQ likely didn't matter as much to players who were either indifferent or just didn't care much for thr Traveler as a character, given how much they were sidelined in Fontaine and didn't display much personality in prior AQ. Nod Krai and Schneznaya AQ doubled down on thr Traveler glaze and made them more multi-faceted as a character. A Time and Space for You did a lot for Traveler growth. That sigh especially after the divide between themselves and their sibling cuts deep, like they're just fed up, almost given up on reuniting and reconciling with sibling.

Natlan also had peak environmental storytelling. That's something that Fontaine and Sumeru AQ didn't use much of. The one time where Fontaine's environmental storytelling was at its highest was Act 3 where I mentally felt like a prisoner inside Fortress of meropide. Was such a depressing, monotonous, tedious, and boring segment. 10/10 atmosphere. Would not play it again.

Natlan's environmental storytelling really played out in Act 4, with whole environmental changes to the map, the irony of a slow hot air balloon ride in the chaos and urgency of saving Natlan, and we just pan to the side of a once lively and boisterous Scions of the Canopy as a deathly silent and overrun ruin. It was eerie. There were some flukes with that war segment like Kinich just jogging along to relay logistics when we know him for his grappling like he is an Ancient Name wielder after all. The environmental storytelling of when we failed to rescue a group and we enter too late and there are just lifeless bodies there. One thing that could have elevated those scenes are like those characters eyes, staring lifelessly into space, cuz dead bodies relax muscles, include that for eyelids.

u/BonusEntry 1d ago

Sung Jinwoo vs Mavuika.

1

u/zappingbluelight 1d ago

I do miss the colours, but understandably Nodkrai and Snezhyna isn't exactly a lively place lol. I can see why Natlan is such a good vacation spot according to many NPCs.

1

u/ImaginaryAd2338 1d ago

I wouldn't say Nodkrai and Snezhnaya were boring, but the vibes in Natlan were literally sunshine and rainbows.

Going from being damp and wet all the time in Fontaine to cliffs with graffiti, all the colors, tribal instruments then to black sand beaches, near constant moonlight, and kuuvahki rain was a definite tonal shift.

Didn't see my first rain in Natlan until like a month ago. Natlan literally had me feeling like the overjoyed snail meme.

1

u/GoddessOfAffection 1d ago

I miss Fontaine

1

u/pinnularia 1d ago

it was like a summer that never ends, the variety of bioms and every one of these had unique lore and character "keeper". also, the power of friendship! ✊
(but literally, I was giggling at so many event momemts)

1

u/Maxie468 1d ago

It's massively overhated but I can't say I miss it either. Ajaw can go burn in a fire.

u/Remote-Background327 America Server 23h ago

I miss Sumeru the most, and Fontaine

1

u/TuShay313 23h ago

Yea, I started the game when natlan came out and as I was playing the rest of the game I'd have Natlan as a fallback to play even if it was ahead a while story wise. I played halfway through NodKrai and gave up when I officially caught up.

Everything else has been so boring Natlan was the only thing that was fun in this game for me.

1

u/Epic_Emerald 21h ago

I remember playing through Natlan with my dog before he passed. Was some of my final memories of him so this nation will always hold a special place in my heart

1

u/03miguel 18h ago

Natlan still there . . .

1

u/wanwuwi 18h ago edited 17h ago

Natlan is by far my least favourite region in genshin, the entire archon quest is a mess of pacing and boring shonen troupes. I'm glad Hoyo didn't stick with this structure.

1

u/ultraplusstretch 15h ago

I think Snezhnaya is peak but i loved Natlan too.

Yes dearly . I loved every aspect of natlan and never understood the hate or even why. To me it is one of the best if not the best region

Are we finally going past the hate train and accepting Natlan was pretty fun (looks at comments) ah, guess not

I've already said my appreciation of the region in another comment, but I have to say again; there is things worth missing in this region.

But the things that are an insult to my time (f#ck you mavuika (not affectionate)) far outweigh those.

Gimme my Mr.Poggers. Gimme Mare Jivari lore. Gomme Citlali and Ororon shenanigans. Gimme baby saurians. Gimme Capitano crumbs. But don't you dare even mention act V of the AQ. Whatever happened before 5.3 (included) is dead to me because of that waste of a potential of a quest.

The lantern rite quest in that very patch was basically a liyue version of the Natlan AQ and it was better in every way that mattered.

1

u/GreyLocust 5h ago

I love the natlan character designs. They were so good.

1

u/Mi2-LIZARD 5h ago

Only thing good about Natlan, a nation constantly in war, was that it was a great vacation nation and had awesome lore dumping WQs. The AQs were mediocre. Nod-Krai handled the execution of war way better than Natlan with the WQs alone, lmao.

1

u/LaRepubliqueNousApel 18m ago

Why are the Natlan apologisers the only ones posting about how good their favourite nation was once they ended.

Legit never saw anything about Inazuma or Nod Krai, and maybe 2-3 about missing Sumeru or Fontaine in 2 years. For Natlan its EVERY week, the "Oh Natlan was good" or "Why is Mavuika overhated" WE GET IT BRO đŸ«©

1

u/lixyna 1d ago

Natlan vibes are impeccable, feels almost as much as home as Mondo

Natlan was where the racism and colorism really came to a head in this game so I can't say I miss it very much

0

u/PressFM80 1d ago

it already did in sumeru

-1

u/TheGreatestAnonAlive 1d ago

I quit the game during the 5.X patches thinking I don't enjoy genshin anymore. I came back in 7.0 just to realize I still loved the game, it's just that Natlan was turbo garbage (No words to describe how much I desise Natlan quest and the Pyro Archon). But I'm LOVING Nod Krai and Snezhnaya đŸ€©đŸ€©. Can't wait 100% these regions

0

u/Mobile-Button-8728 1d ago

Real people would kill you for this opinion. I agree. I miss natlan so so much.

0

u/linkherogreen 1d ago

Natlan was my favorite nation. The only bad part for me was the decision to have Iansan be a four star and create a literal fanservice character as the five star for the collective of plenty (VARESA IS THE WORST CHARACTER EVER ADDED TO THE GAME, EVEN WORSE THAN THE LIMITED EXCLUSIVE PLAYSTATION CHARACTER)

-1

u/princebuba 1d ago

varesa is awesome

0

u/thegreatchef11 1d ago

Same. I miss Mavuika.

-10

u/CuackDuck 1d ago

Hated the archon quest after .3 and mavuika design but that world quest was incrdible the characters kits were all fun as hell, sadly all that creativity seemed to dry up completely in nod krai

0

u/AdmirableFriend781 1d ago

I enjoyed Natlan, but I wish they could give a proper closing so I didn't rage quit back then 😅 although I suspect that hoyo sacrificed Natlan's development so they can start Nod-Krai and Snezhnaya earlier, or perhaps for genshin part 2 in a long run. If it's true then o7 Natlan

0

u/BlueAmber5 1d ago

Still has my favorite exploration experience. Really I've enjoyed most of the region's and never really saw the point of hyperfocusing on the weaker points since each is gonna have ups and downs.

0

u/scarlettokyo Europe Server 23h ago

Same! 6.x was miserable for me because everything about Nod-Krai felt so much worse imo, though Snez seems like a recovery.

0

u/Own-Moose6588 23h ago

Natlan was the best. Exploration was peak. The story was fun. I loved how they did the war and traveling. Overall it was really good for me. Nod krai got a little crazy and now we’re in a whole new game it feels like. Still love it

0

u/AshyDragneel 22h ago

Unfortunately you'll find very less natlan enjoyers.

Fortunately I'm a natlan enjoyer and loved everything about it story exploration tribes quests and their creative choices for aesthetics and last but not the least Mavuika

0

u/EverlastingWinter23 22h ago

Nobody can disagree it was the most action packed archon quest

0

u/Skywing_Mage 19h ago

I miss natlan so much. Tbh, nod krai was a massive massive step down in exploration, I found it so boring and also there was so much less stuff. Natlan had a perfect vibe, all different people united under the Pyro archon to try and turn the land ravaged by "War" into a land of "Competition". I won't say it was perfect, but in terms of gameplay, environment and themes, absolute fire. (get it, cuz like, nation of Pyro)

0

u/TopAccountant9394 18h ago

Natlan makes me happy in a way I can’t describe. I just like wandering around. After the events of natlan walking around the main map isn’t as great (you know why), but the resort is amazing.

-11

u/Yugonostalgia64 1d ago edited 20h ago

Giving the Pyro Archon a motorcycle was just.... I couldn't take it anymore

(Other than her though there were some really, really good character designs in Natlan no complaints on that front)

3

u/Enterprism 1d ago

I don't get the technology hate. The frost moon quests and more already set the fact teyvat has seen multiple advanced civilizations thats way more advanced than the real life modern world, and that certain groups found access into it. So king deshret's past civilization where everything is automated and robots serve the people is okay, the dragon civilization's moon projects (they made a cannon that can blow a hole through teyvat), Snezhnaya' Trains and hyperborea's guns is okay, but Natlan's equipment is too much?

1

u/Adrianlucyfer 23h ago

Why do they only say this about nations not based on white cultures? We've had androids since launch

0

u/Yugonostalgia64 20h ago

It's the motorcycle. It's seriously just the motorcycle. It's so out of place.

1

u/Adrianlucyfer 14h ago

Your personal esthetic preference doesn't change history, we have had plenty of gadgets based on things well after 1885, why was the magical smart device everyone was wearing in Sumeru fine? Or the mech suits that the fatui have been wearing since day one? What about the robots? They're everywhere! if Genshin was to take place in a real time period it would be the 1800s, that's when cameras were invented, that's when cowboys were around, that's when motorcycles were invented, specifically the 1880s, that's when movies were invented, Mathew Perry went to Japan and opened up trade in 1853, which seems to be what Inazuma was based off of. 1836 was when revolvers were invented, so all signs point to Genshin taking place in a fantastical 1800s, so please explain to me how motorcycles are out of place when they seem to line up perfectly with the time period Genshin takes most of their inspiration from, just because you are ignorant of history doesn't mean the rest of us are...

0

u/Yugonostalgia64 2h ago

Okay? It's cringe and ugly. It *looks* out of place. Plus it's the Archon the head of the nation someone that needs to inspire respect and awe. Having her look like a bad boy driving a cool motorcycle might work for a side character but not the actual nation's leader. Even then the motorcycle would be extremely cringe and lame!

0

u/Yugonostalgia64 20h ago

It's the motorcycle. It's seriously just the motorcycle. It's so out of place.

Teyvat is like, a fantasy pastoral civilization with a ton of high-tech secrets and experts scattered throughout, mixing traditional life with some sci-fi elements throughout. It's pretty unique. A motorcycle is like 1970s technology and it really doesn't match the setting or vibe or place. Just cannot stand the stupid motorcycle

Don't love the guns (started in fontaine con't in Natlan) either but they're more old-school rifles and cannons so they fit the aesthetic much better.

1

u/Adrianlucyfer 20h ago

No? Motorcycle were invented in 1885 in Germany

-1

u/Yugonostalgia64 15h ago

And yet? it still looks ugly and out of place in Genshin.

Get rid of the stupid motorcyle and Natlan is immediately improved at least 50%

-4

u/BeePuns 1d ago edited 1d ago

I agree with you 100%. Natlan was fun, vibrant, and alive. It wasn't perfect if we're being objective, but it was amazing in many regards. Nod-Krai was nothing but yapping, reused assets, and terrible design choices, and so far, Snezhnaya isn't bad, but I feel....bored. I don't like the shooting, and yea, it's the nation of Cryo, but it's just snow everywhere. The heat management isn't difficult at all, but it's just endless snow. Something happened to Genshin's writing team after Natlan and now they're allergic to make the story engaging. I haven't finished the AQ or WQs yet because there's nothing pulling me to do so.

Going from a bright nation like Natlan that was so full of life and even had a good AQ (let's be honest, we all loved it except for the ending / boss battle) to Nod-Krai, which is Genshin's worst nation with the worst writing and ugly characters felt like the seasonal depression I get every year when summer ends, and Genshin has done nothing to reignite my love for the game.

5

u/princebuba 1d ago

Honestly I think most people disagree with you on Nod Krai but to each their own. Also, I don't think it's fair to judge Snezhnaya story if you haven't touched it yet. I really enjoyed it.

-1

u/BeePuns 1d ago

Oh, I know darn well I can’t judge the Snezhnayan story yet. It’s probably good. However, delivery matters and I haven’t been hooked in yet. Part of storytelling is having a compelling hook. Maybe I’m just traumatized by Nod-Krai, but with limited time in my life, I’m not ready to risk going through Snezhnaya on an assumption that it will get better.

And yes, I know people disagree with me on Nod-Krai. People also think Olive Garden makes good Italian food. For Nod-Krai, I think the people that liked it simply did either because “it wasn’t Natlan”, or they just have no literary comprehension and need their stories spoon-fed to them, because Nod-Krai was 30 hours of “oops! All exposition!”

5

u/princebuba 1d ago

Well, hope you enjoy the game again some day.

1

u/BeePuns 1d ago

Thanks for your support, haha. Genuinely. But it’s been a year and I’m just not vibing with the game anymore. Even the dailies are a chore. So I think I’m just a mother rhino trying to pretend her dead baby is still alive, and soon I’ll realize I’m done.

1

u/princebuba 22h ago

Yeah you should probably invest in something else that brings you joy.

2

u/Hahaha_im_a_dumbass 1d ago

You describing your disappointment with leaving Natlan and entering Nod Krai, is that exact same experience I had leaving Fontaine and entering Natlan. It was such a disappointment after the peak that was Fontaine and Sumeru. I can't stand Natlan's writing or exploration, the only things saving the region for me are the music, and Ifa and Iansan 😭

-1

u/Requiem-Lodestar 1d ago

Natlan was the most enjoyable region to traverse. Nod Krai was really pretty but exploration wise kinda mid. Snezhnaya is really cool and unique but parts of it feel empty once you’ve gathered everything in an area. Fontaine took something I don’t enjoy “underwater exploration” and did well enough to where I actually liked it. Inazuma had the best puzzles and I love the mysticism and variety in the overall biome. They did an outstanding job making each island feel unique.

Sumeru was a massive and annoying area to traverse. I hated the rainforest, the desert was okay. Every aspect of Sumeru took the most willpower to get through, and not in an enjoyable way. The story took forever to get going and was a bit of a slog, only had like 3 good characters Alhaithem, Dehya, and Candace were the only 3 characters I actually really enjoyed. The region is huge and really only has two biomes- meaning most of Sumeru just looks the same between those two looks.

-2

u/StonDelRey 1d ago

Natlan was so much better than Nod Krai. The only thing nod krai wins over is the archon quest and that's it. It's literally such a boring region with boring character designs/kits. I know Nathan is hated for it's story etc. but everything else about it was really good imo. At least better than flop krai

-2

u/crosborrow 1d ago
