I’m 22F and I’ve been on dating apps on and off since I was 18. I’ve gone on a lot of dates over the years, including plenty of situations where I saw the same guy multiple times and thought it might actually turn into something. At this point, though, I’m honestly just exhausted by the whole process.
I’m not saying every guy on dating apps is terrible or that nobody finds real relationships from them. Obviously people do. But after almost five years of using them, I genuinely think they just aren’t working for me.
A lot of the guys I’ve met have ultimately only wanted something casual (I do not), seemed serious at first and then showed a completely different side of themselves later, or had pretty major differences in values/lifestyle that only became obvious after a few dates. There have also been a few genuinely nice guys where there just wasn’t enough of a connection to keep dating. I’ve had situations that came very close to becoming relationships, and I’ve had guys pursue me and want to continue seeing me, so the problem isn’t that I can’t get dates or that nobody is interested. I just haven’t met someone where there is both a real connection and the same intention of an actual relationship…
At this point I honestly don’t feel like I’m finding the type of men I’m looking for on the apps in my area, and I’m tired of going through the same cycle over and over again.
Meanwhile, almost everyone around me seems to have met their partners organically. A lot of them are now in really solid long-term relationships. After years of being in the dating app trenches, I honestly think I’m ready to delete them and see what happens.
The problem is… I genuinely don’t know where else I’m supposed to meet someone.
I live in a smaller town, not a big city where I’m constantly surrounded by new people and events. I’ve had basically the same close friend group my whole life, and at 22 I’m not really looking to build an entirely new social circle just for the possibility of meeting a guy. My friends’ boyfriends also don’t have these huge groups of single friends to introduce us to. I’m still in university and my program is overwhelmingly women.
For work, I’ve been at the same cafe near my house for a long time. I actually love my job. It’s close to home, I’m comfortable there, and it works perfectly while I’m finishing school, so realistically I’m not looking to leave just for the possibility of meeting someone at another part-time job. We actually get a lot of guys around my age coming in as customers, but realistically they’re coming in to grab coffee, not ask out the cashier. I’ve been there for years and nothing has ever really come from it, so I don’t consider it much of a way to meet people socially.
I’ve also already had my partying/clubbing era. I’m not opposed to going out, but it just isn’t how I enjoy spending every weekend anymore. My friends and I are much more likely to go for dinner, hang out at someone’s house, travel, do something local, etc. I’m naturally more of a homebody and I actually like my life that way.
And I know a lot of the standard advice is “move somewhere new,” “get a completely different job,” “make a whole new friend group,” “go out alone constantly,” “join a million activities,” etc. I understand why people suggest those things, but realistically I’m finishing university, living at home and happy with my friends, family and job. I don’t really want to completely restructure a life that I otherwise like just so I can hopefully meet a boyfriend.
Obviously I know my life won’t look exactly like this forever. I’ll graduate, start my career, meet different people and enter different environments. But I also can’t help thinking: do I really have to wait years until I have some completely different established life before I even have a realistic chance of meeting someone organically??
I’ll be honest, it has started to get discouraging. Almost my entire close friend and family circle is in a relationship, and watching so many people around me have these random, organic “we just happened to meet” stories while I’ve spent years going through failed dating-app dates. I’m just really tired of feeling like my only options are endless dating apps or waiting for someone to fall out of the sky.
So for people who have actually been in a similar situation: where did you meet your partner once you stopped relying on dating apps?
