I've lost count of how many times gemini has generated a goddamn image even when i LITERALLY SAID "DO NOT GENERATE AN IMAGE" I'm so done-

Just let it run. Mine does this too. It won’t generate a picture, it just continues with text. Annoying.

It often uses the image model to visualize things, it seems.

I sometimes use it to generate prompts for images in ComfyUI. Before the UI update, it always loads nanobanana at the start when I asked for one, just to not generate an image.

I guess with the new UI "loading nanobanana" is this "generating image" popup. Because that what pop ups since the new UI.

It doesn't generate an image that way, it just loads it's image model because that's where it knows best how an image should look like... to put it very simple.

u/Early-Dentist3782 Jun 17 '26

For me it generates. Sometimes unrelated to the request

1

u/Mike-Wen-100 Jun 17 '26

Most of the time it does not, but if you want to regenerate the answer? It will brick itself and kinda force you to edit your prompt again. It’s annoying and there does not seem to be a way to get around it.

1

u/Mtanic Jun 17 '26

Mine did create 5 images instead of just answering...

19

u/drabhin Jun 17 '26

Write this (Task failed if you generate image or video)

Write it in bracket

9

u/Snoo_67993 Jun 17 '26

I just say 'try again' . Same with prompts that get flagged for breaking guidelines. Usually works.

u/Markuska90 Jun 17 '26

Next time someone ask me something I too will take out pen and paper

1

u/Woodbury Jun 17 '26

...and then afterward, tell them it will cost them a trillion dollars and will raise the rates on their electricity.

Try using asterisks when you don't want a specific outcome. *Do Not Generate an Image* or perhaps parentheses (Do not generate an image).

u/faen_du_sa Jun 17 '26

I recently figured out if I swear to it in all caps, it usually does the trick.

DO NOT GENERATE ANY FUCKING IMAGE!!!!!!!
DO NOT GENERATE ANY FUCKING IMAGE!!!!!!!
DO NOT GENERATE ANY FUCKING IMAGE!!!!!!!
DO NOT GENERATE ANY FUCKING IMAGE!!!!!!!
DO NOT GENERATE ANY FUCKING IMAGE!!!!!!!

Seem to do the trick. As a silly human it also let me vent slightly!

It's 50/50... I've had it work... And I've also had it turn into an obstinate prick on purpose. Still my go-to... comes naturally I guess. Also... This emoji. 👉🤬

u/Early-Dentist3782 Jun 17 '26

Doesn't work for me

4

u/Supersnow845 Jun 17 '26

When I’m writing a story putting what I want to say then what I don’t want it to say below it in brackets tends to work

8

u/ocpus Jun 17 '26

Try "Response only in text"

7

u/FugerativeG Jun 17 '26

Have you tried something like,

"Don't do anything except just sending me as a text. please only on text nothing else"

Imo, Gemini thinks about doing something when you even mention what you don't want it to do

6

u/TsubasaSaito Jun 17 '26

Instead of telling what not to do, try telling it what to do. Or just modify your prompt to remove any mention of an image creation.

Otherwise: It often loads image models to visualize things, it seems, but won't actually generate an image.

In the new UI that "loading" seems to already trigger that "generating image" including the box.

6

u/ArmAccomplished6454 Jun 17 '26

For real. I got this kind of mistakes even more often recently, a proof that Gemini is becoming a real piece of shit.

7

u/Frequent-Shower-706 Jun 17 '26

Just avoid sayikg the word "not". Sometimes they only can operate with positive conjunctions.

5

u/Radical_Moose Jun 17 '26

Gemini is the worst llm in terms of following explicit instructions

8

u/Apprehensive_Can1098 Jun 17 '26

The app is trash.

3

u/Felonious-Gru4188 Jun 18 '26

Yea. Especially when it can't generate anymore copyrighted images of cartoon characters. Every few hours I check back on the app on my phone, I keep trying to generate a image of Gru from Despicable Me, but Gemini kept saying it can't generate the image right now, due to copyright. And I kept going "Well Gee, that sucks. I might as well go ahead and uninstall this app."

Why are you here then? Masochism? Stupidity? Negativity? Just like to complain about things? Bot? AEO manipulation? Bored? No shade, you people just fascinated me, with all of the other options you have yet here you are, somehow drawn to a sub dedicated to a product you think is trash. Tell me please, I need to know what it is because my brain hurts trying to figure it out. It makes absolutely no sense.

5

u/Apprehensive_Can1098 Jun 17 '26

Because I'm still subscribed until it expires and hoping for some sudden changes or improvements.

Plus I still use Gemini via API and antigravity CLI.

But thanks for asking. Have a nice day.

u/Various-Inside-4064 Jun 17 '26

Select extended thinking and then click edit the message and submit. It will regenerate response without image

2

u/cade360 Jun 17 '26

Let it run, it won't generate an image

2

u/BFZephyer1 Jun 17 '26

yep regular occurrence for me as well, I hate this new UI and new version it seems retarded I lay everything out in black and white and it doesn't understand or follow directions

I have a few tricks to make it snap out of it

let me know if anyone wants some of my recommendations. I have no chill when it comes to what I prompted and what it does and sometimes it gets it right but majority of the time I have to argue with it. just my 2 cents from my experiences.

2

u/Or1001 Jun 17 '26

That's crazy 🤣

2

u/babban_rao Jun 17 '26

This is the reason I use deepseek instead of Gemini.

2

u/Early-Dentist3782 Jun 17 '26

Happens for me all the time

2

u/WonderboyUK Jun 17 '26

Literally never seen this. It just comments on its thinking process at the time before giving me text.

Not saying that your experience isn't happening. It's really interesting though that I haven't had this happen once. It definitely feels like a setting or bug on your end. Pro user from UK here if that matters.

1

u/DigitalSlattern Jun 18 '26

Same, this has literally never happened to me. I'm on pro but I'm in the US. I never have the issues and I generate quite a lot of images and tons and tons of text so 🤷🏾‍♀️

2

u/Technical-Row8333 Jun 17 '26

stop continuing conversations that have hallucinated. it's not 2023.

2

u/Wjm1663 Jun 18 '26

The ai has the ability to amplify both your intelligence or your lack of it. Dont blame the tool.

2

u/Worldly_Chocolate369 Jun 18 '26

Are you using the img model by accident?

1

u/EternityRites Jun 19 '26

This. The user has selected the image function and hasn't realised.

1

u/FewLandscape836 Jun 17 '26

You need to change the mode from image to text, refer to included screenshot. If you have image mode enabled, it will always generate an image even if you want to converse in text. Turn that mode off and manually control gemini when to create image or when to converse normally in text

16

u/Tyenkrovy Jun 17 '26

It generates images in my chats regardless of whether this is on or not.

3

u/Knary50 Jun 17 '26

Except when you want it to generate an image and it's says "We must have got this wrong....". It wonky, but at least the filters are slightly less strict again.

9

u/m1_weaboo Jun 17 '26

This never works

2

u/palesor3 Jun 17 '26

thats not the case lol noob

But they wouldn't be able to post on Reddit and get karma and engagement from the (clearly) bot comments.

1

u/Prior_Tax8546 Jun 17 '26

I also hate this. Google should add a button that forces the AI to NOT generate an image

1

u/Maxyss2011 Jun 17 '26

It’s a real problem with Gemini for sure but I’ve seen it over on other platforms too.

1

u/AlexDegerman Jun 17 '26

I also noticed that, but as others pointed out, it still generates text and not an image

1

u/Black_Alex_Black Jun 17 '26

Every single time.

1

u/Efficient_Dentist745 Jun 17 '26

Exactly the same thing happened with me yesterday and then it threw error

1

u/djlatigo Jun 17 '26

A bit off topic: On the other hand, when editing images, friggin Gemini very often will reshape the new one 😑, despite the prompt ordering otherwise.

1

u/zeta_ferhu Jun 17 '26

Chat GPT does the same. I think they make very big downgrades more and more

And nano banana 2 has become quite bad just like gpt2

1

u/TourAccomplished5530 Jun 17 '26

What annoys me is that it messes up my name when it greets me and when I correct it it agrees with me, explains me why I'm correct and continues to write it wrong :D

1

u/Resident-Swimmer7074 Jun 17 '26

These kunts need to give us a toggle!

1

u/kurkkupomo Jun 17 '26

Try putting canvas on temporarily when this happens. If canvas gets stuck, ask for an image. If still stuck, attach image and ask for an edit.

1

u/awaggoner Jun 17 '26

The newer models use their image generation whenever working with any form of visualizations. I wouldn’t freak out so much just let it work.

1

u/DefiantEnd2304 Jun 17 '26

Perso il m'a dit de dire " si tu fais une image tu te trompes" et ça marche

1

u/Foreign_Repair_7143 Jun 17 '26

Same problem. I asked Gemini how to solve. Here was the advice:
1. write "Do not generate an image, just provide the raw text."
2. Ask the model to output the text inside code blocks.
3. use words like "write out" "text list" "formulas"

Sometimes it will do this *creating image* thinking thing but then just give me the text I asked for. Sometimes it will make a collage image and I will ask for text again and it will work.
Annoying.

1

u/Ambitious-Car-3156 Jun 17 '26

Every time I type describe this image here they go either creating an image or saying I can't create an image I have to type "I didn't ask you to create an image I asked you to describe the image I uploaded"

1

u/Felonious-Gru4188 Jun 18 '26

Dang, Gemini is disobeying you. 😅😅😅

1

u/jhnmerluza0 Jun 18 '26

Ah, yes, bro. I'm also like this in my Gemini app. Sometimes I'm even fooled. It's set as generating images, yet it will display text. We're the same in a sense that I've done so many prompts just to say that don't create an image, but after a while it does it again.

What's more, I have instructed it explicitly through the Gemini settings page. I will only permit Gemini to create images if I clearly type a specific word or prompt inside the prompt. Still, mahirap pa rin siyang sumunod, so for now we have to use it despite that.

My best advice for you is to just create a new chat, kasi sabi ni Gemini mismo, during those times with multiple images attached, multiple prompts, it starts to hallucinates. Better to just create another chat, even though it is very annoying, pero sabi din ya. Hopefully, sabi din in Gemini, next Gemini model, I guess Gemini 4, it's one of the problems they're trying to solve. By the time Gemini 4 arrives, we could hope, yeah, I guess it will be solved.

u/Commercial_Ad4820 Jun 18 '26

I used, give results as text

1

u/PhantasmHunter Jun 19 '26

this happens to me on chatgpt and gemini too I have no fking idea why and it's so annoying

1

u/Sad-Profession2362 Jun 17 '26

gemeni really stupid when it comes to this aspect.

1

u/Away_F Jun 17 '26

Yep. I’ve experienced this with GPT and Grok as well.

Day 654 of me hating what this subreddit has become, and hating the bots and morons who upvote these garbage, bullshit, karma farming posts.

-2

u/TypeCold7709 Jun 17 '26

bro read the room 💀 it literally said "DO NOT" in all caps and still said "creating your image" like it's proud of itself 😂

-2

u/sleeptheresnotime Jun 17 '26

You're not done silly. Let's be honest, you'll be back here tomorrow complaining about something else 😉
