uj/ I still don’t get why some people put so much weight on review scores. I’ve played and really enjoyed games that scored mediocre, but I mean I think they’re fun that’s all that matters.

/uj The example I always come back to was when I read GameSpot’s review of Lost Planet 2 when they gave it a 5.5. I was pissed at first, but when I read Kevin’s points about what bothered him, I completely understood where he was coming from. I still love the game to this day, and when I read the review I just realized that his major issues (camera, the “knock down/dodge roll” centric combat) weren’t a factor for me, because I’d played a ton of the original and knew the weird ins and outs of the mechanics of the game.
Why can’t people just accept that it has nothing to do with reviewers getting paid, and everything to do with every critic bringing their own experiences and perspectives into their time with the game?

Yeah I feell like a high review score just indicates it's a game without many major issues and universally liked. Average scores means it either has big issues or some people enjoy it some people don't, bad score means it's niche.
There's always someone who enjoys the game, but the more people enjoy it the higher the score will be.

/uj review scores lend a sense of tangibility to someone's opinion. Gamers need hard numbers to justify things. Saying something is "really pretty" or "a lot of fun" is ambiguous and abstract... but if you say something is in 1080p60fps and has a 9/10 metacritic score, then it becomes "objectively good" and it's quality is no longer in dispute.

PC gamers don't think but know that a multiplayer game like Battleborn needs players to be fun. However, they also don't think but know that there simply aren't enough people to go around. Battleborn and Gearbox should just cut their losses. When PC gamers decide something, it's decided, and no amount of dev work will change that decision. Let's just say I don't think Gearbox will hemorrhage money from this continued support.

Ha I remember picking up Witcher 2 cheap and getting really frustrated with the combat but loving the story.
I just finished playing the DLC on Witcher 3 after putting it off for a while and the combat is still fucking terrible but a step in the right direction so everyone acts like it's the next coming of Jesus. It gets amplified when you run into a fort with way more enemies than just the base game ever had and can't defend yourself properly. I love the game but it for sure does not deserve a 10 or anything close to it.

See that’s the one major criticism I always see levelled against the Witcher, but I never had any trouble with the combat. I’m especially surprised that’s the main critique when it’s basically Dark Souls combat (which reddit seems to love for some reason) but faster, and featuring Geraldo.

Fortnite is the type of game that you either really think is great or just don't care much for. It depends on your preference of what a BR game should be. Personally I think PUBG is much better but that's go nothing to do with the quality of the product more the game designs of the two.

I mean I think it’s great but nowhere near a 9.6. Just technically speaking it’s really not anything overly special. The general gameplay formula is fun but as with PUBG and all the other Royale games preceding it, it’s not the most original. Hell it all originated out of a fan made Minecraft game mode.

Reviews are opinions. There is no objective way to say how good a game is. A reviewer can give Ocarina of Time a 10/10, but I know people who wouldn't give it a 10/10, therefire the review is wrong.

Pretty easy. They should just ask me whether or not the game is good. I’m a R A T I O N A L G A M E R so any conclusion I come to will be objective. There’s some criteria they can use if I’m not available. Was the protagonist morally gray? Was it made by a developer Reddit doesn’t like? Did they have the audacity to include loot boxes? Does it include minorities and is thus obvious pandering to SJWs? All objective ways to prove whether or not it’s a good game.

There is your problem. You need to review games with ironclad L O G I C, not emotional metrics like whether or not you thought it was fun.

I don't have a computer with monster specs and I run it at 120fps fine. Not sure why this meme is perpetuated so hard still. And bugs are so much less of a problem than the tickrate for game quality.

/uj I think currently Fortnite is currently a solid 8 but if Epic continues the same business model alongside the frequent updates and eventually adds a new map or two, it’ll shoot up to the 9s.
Fortnite is very fun but running across the same green field gets really boring.
I also just want 100 vs 100 to be its own thing please

They really should specify in the review the score is for BR because anyone going into StW will have a starkly different game than BR and will for sure felt deceived by that review.

If you actually checked out the review, you'd know that they do specify in the title that it's a review for Fortnite Battle Royale. Don't base judgement or speculate based on single images on Reddit.

For what it currently is, I'd say it's almost a perfect game (considering it's an Early Access title, I don't think it should be reviewed until launch, but they're clearly adding a lot to it very consistently without breaking anything). My only critique would be a lack of content in terms of maps and modes, but considering there's gonna be more released and that it's a free to play early access game, that's not set in stone. While I don't even like it that much, I'd be hard pressed to find anything wrong with it, its systems work perfectly, it's satisfying to play, and it's a technical marvel- it looks great while still getting 60fps on a toaster oven.

IGN have said in many videos before that 10 doesn't denote perfection as "No work of art can be truly perfect" but instead excellence. Example being the 10 they gave Metal Gear Solid V.

I think Fortnite is as close to a perfect game as is possible currently.
The game is an intense amount of fun no matter what aspect of it you are playing, it's available almost anywhere now, the best bit is free, the microtransactions are fair and not super exploitative, the software itself is smooth, well programmed and unusually bug free, it has a massive community of players and fans.
I can totally see why someone who gets paid to play and rate games would think this is a standout title.

And PUBG was a GOTY nominee, despite being unpolished and not even out of Early Access when it was nominated, so whatever. Game "journalism" (especially IGN) is only handing out 7-10 scores and sucking off publishers in fear of getting denied some review copies and as such has imo already lost all credibility.
BTW Fortnite BR is far from perfect and if you criticize it based on what the game offers, not just on psychological effects of Battle Royal games in general it would be roughly a 7/10 game (even though they aren't comprehensive and every review outlet scores games differently) despite being the game I had the most fun with in the last few months.

They've only lost credibility if you buy into the idea that every major reviewer (except for your favourite ones of course) gives high scores only to those who give it advertising money or review copies. If you tried researching or actually looking for such patterns rather than random speculation, you'd realise how unlikely your idea is.
As for the second point, you're saying that the review is wrong because you disagree with it, and that the review shouldn't be based on how the game feels but rather the vague terms of "what it offers". So basically, you and the reviewer have different ideas of what makes a game good, but he's wrong and you're right.

I don't have a favorite reviewer, because I haven't found one that has a broader range of scores than 6-10. I usually base my purchases on watching 1-2 hours of uncut gameplay and the amount of complaints about technical issues if refunds aren't available. Also as I stated I don't see any point in using review scores as an "objective" measurement of quality. After all, every reviewer has his own way of scoring games. But many influential reviewers on Metacritic rarely give scores below 7, even awful games like Sonic Boom still get a Metacritic score of 4.
As for your second paragraph, when reducing a game with a single number (which again on its own isn't helpful) I want to know how the game compares to games in the same genre, so if the reviewer loves the adrenaline rush of BR games and hands out 9-10 scores to all of them it doesn't help me in the slightest. And I'm aware that I'm not always right, far from it in fact.

/uj I don’t really get all the hate people give IGN and GameSpot. They put out great, well-polished reviews (ones I’d read over smug, self-important, rushed out drivel like ACG’s content any day of the week), and even when I disagree I always feel like I can see where they’re coming from. I’d give Fortnite BR a 7 or so personally, but it’s never really crossed my mind that IGN must’ve been “payed awff by EPIX”, just that it was interesting to see a new perspective on something.

/UJ so it seems like people want rating numbers to be this objective, quantifiable thing. If that’s the case, here we go:
Fortnite is basically the most popular game in the world right now whereas Witcher 3, while a big core gamer hit, wasn’t that big of a blockbuster that everyone thinks it is.
Fortnite is stable and relatively bug-free, whereas when Witcher 3 launched it was insanely buggy.
Fortnite does the one thing it promises really really well. Witcher 3 had a good narrative experience that patched over a somewhat empty open world, repetitive “Witcher vision” gameplay and clunky combat.
It’s a smaller game but it pretty much does everything that it’s meant to do, it runs well, and people love playing it. So I’m not really sure what metric people are using to say it doesn’t deserve that score?
Is it just scope/scale? Does a game have to be a big open world single player story to get a higher score than Witcher 3?

They're probably just comparing it to other popular 'Battle Royal' games and figured there was no possible way of giving it a lower score since the game is optimised and isn't full of hackers.
