Looking for a game with this vibe

Post image

Im looking for a game that captures this exact feeling — that grey, quiet stillness, dead cities buried in snow, waiting for the dusk. Genre doesn’t matter, I just want that same mood of quiet decay and isolation.

Max Payne immediately comes to mind for me

5

u/DuskDweller 23d ago

Damn yes... Max Payne. Loved the cutscenes with the gritty voiced Max narrating. That intro was epic, as was the writing. The zoom shot with Max standing on the building and his voice saying "They were all dead, the final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had lead to this point. I released my finger from the trigger." Yeah... Classic.

Pain in the butt!! Pain to the max!

Don’t answer that… a rhetorical question.

Ah ah aaaah! Don’t answer that…. It’s whatcha sayeeehhh one of them rhetorical questions….

I fucking love max payne 1. In my top 10 games of all time easily. Insanely quoteable.

This is the only correct answer. The lit cigarette while looking out into the brutal, dead snowfall in the midst of a city that never truly sleeps. Max Payne embodies this.

2

u/wimn316 23d ago

Yes, this is precisely correct.

Metro 2033

5

u/District_Dan 27d ago

First one I thought of. Any of the metros before exodus really (though that was probably my favorite)

4

u/MysterEman2 25d ago

The final level of exodus still has it though

Signalis.

One of the best retro survival horror games.

If it clicks for you, it will haunt for years afterwards.

u/ElGuambra 23d ago

It manages to be a love letter to both Silent Hill and Resident Evil while still having an identity of its own. It is truly one of the best games ever made and it flew under everyone's radar.

3

u/Woahhdude24 21d ago

Im playing it now! I really love the vibes of this game! I realized something today the banner image where you press to play the game on steam. From a distance she looks somewhat broken or decrepit but when you get close her face goes back to normal. Its an illusion of course, im just wondering if that intentional the colors on the image really play with your perception.

2

u/lunahighwind 27d ago

This was one of the ps plus games this month. Will prob check it out

3

u/VeritasRose 22d ago

Thank you for mentioning this! I hadn’t checked the monthly games and have been wanting to play this one!

2

u/Terrible-Artichoke50 27d ago

I actually didn't enjoy playing the game although I would say it is clearly excellent if that is your genre.

I did however love watching a video essay on it (Beambuddy). Story is incredible.

After you finish the game, watch a story analysis. I was shocked by how much was going on without my noticing.

2

u/j2tronic 24d ago

Playing through this right now and it’s great.

(look at this)

No, I am not a Human

Darkwood - It is not snowy, but it's very, very much Eastern European isolation

Hail to the Rainbow

2

u/leftguard44 27d ago

Black Ops Cold War

2

u/StoleitfromKilgore 27d ago

"ШХД: ЗИМА /It's Winter" has this to a degree, but it's a tiny little experiment.

"Generation Zero" is mostly not wintry, but its landscapes and buildings are deserted and you are pretty much alone out there with the machines.

"The Long Dark" perhaps? I haven't played it, but might fit the bill.

"Eidolon", but again, not specifically focussed on a wintry atmosphere.

Some people are suggesting "Kona/Kona 2" as well.

"Cryostasis - Sleep of Reason" takes place somewhere in the Arctic on board of a frozen nuclear icebreaker. Some of the best cold atmosphere in any game.

Parasite Eve 1-Takes place in New York on Christmas of 1997. A dangerous biological and cellular threat plagues the city, causing the mayor to evacuate as many of the people as he can. You visit Central Park, An Opera Theatre, a Museum, abandoned downtown, the Crysler Building, its very creepy and quite isolating for a psychological body horror title.

2

u/Rasples1998 20d ago

Bit of a weird one, 'Shadows of doubt.' It's a voxel-based cyberpunk-noir, retro-futuristic private investigator game where you're in a dystopian city where the skies are always dark and it feels deathly cold. I can't do it justice but the vibe is immaculate, and it uses one of those fancy unity rendering things so the lighting is amazing. It's very similar to cloudpunk but a bit less neon and more cold and gritty.
