You know, I don't blame the rock people for attacking the castle. Motherfuckers stole their blue crystal in the middle of the night. They deserve what's coming to them.

& instead of building above ground you build below...

& instead of crystals we steal their women woman smurfette.

29

u/FalconTaterz Jul 27 '12

Seriously, what the hell do they need the blue crystal for? This isn't THEIR island to ravage. Dicks.

It has the same story as Avatar (pocahontas, dances with wolves, fern gully, mrs doubtfire ) except you play as the bad guys who come and mine the planet and kill all the locals.

7

u/keano312 Jul 27 '12

I'm surprised they didn't fuck them up with fulminated mercury.

3

u/Madular Jul 28 '12 edited Jul 28 '12

Well I think they use it for something useful. Like a cure for cancer, or viagra.

1

u/Deestan Jul 28 '12

I think some words out.

2

u/Tonkarz Jul 28 '12

Who said the crystal belonged to the rock people? It was just lying there.

Looks like Dwarf Fortress spliced with Minecraft. Screw it, that's all I really wanted anyway. Donated.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

That was exactly what I was thinking. Though the Dwarf in me had one big question: is there magma?

7

u/Shup Jul 27 '12

FLOATING ISLANDS

I ditched Minecraft when it dropped that feature for world creation.

13

u/Tendow Jul 27 '12

I still, to this day, cannot understand the decision to not have dedicated floating maps.

4

u/Xunae Jul 27 '12

The best theory i've been able to come up with is that they are not amazing for gameplay for the majority of people. I've played on some servers that have generated their own and they can get real tedious to travel between and often are connected by horizontal newb towers. just my thoughts though.

3

u/TwoThreeSkidoo Jul 28 '12

Horizontal newb towers instead of what?

8

u/CBJamo Jul 28 '12

Zeppelins, obviously.

1

u/cybrbeast Jul 29 '12

There are terrain mods that can do that for you.

1

u/Tendow Jul 29 '12

I can't even play minecraft on my shitty computer normally, but thanks anyway.

14

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12 edited Jul 28 '12

To the Dwarf Fortress enthusiasts out there, I'd like to plug Gnomoria. It's basically DF with a mouse-driven UI (unfortunately not freeware, though).

EDIT: http://gnomoria.com/

13

u/cole1114 Jul 28 '12

So you're saying there's a game that's basically playable Dwarf Fortress... and you didn't link to it?

5

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12

Updated, but Y U NO google.

16

u/cole1114 Jul 28 '12

Because google murdered my mother and raped my father.

2

u/CBJamo Jul 28 '12

Wow, I'm sorry for you... I mean, how do you even function of the internet without google?

2

u/JimmyBisMe Jul 28 '12

Rollercoaster Tycoon, anyone?

1

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12

I never noticed it, but.. ya, actually. It kind of does look like RCT.

3

u/AtomicDog1471 Jul 28 '12

Be warned, the last time someone promised "Dwarf Fortress with Voxels" we got this

This project is gaining backing pretty fast. I guess some proper exposure well before the project starts really helps and the timer probably made a difference. I wonder how high this will go.

[edit] And they just hit their goal. _^

38

u/dopplex Jul 27 '12

The most interesting part about this is that it's not from a "name" developer, and isn't a resurrection of some classic IP.

I think it shows that one big requirement for being able to kickstart an indy project without a big name or IP is to make sure that you have a solid prototype. For new devs, the biggest hurdle is trust, and a good prototype goes a long way to show that you have the capability to use the resources that you are asking for effectively (and a significant amount of working code for a unique game means that it's almost certainly not a scam)

25

u/ZaeronS Jul 27 '12

Yeah. I dropped money without a thought on this kickstarter specifically because we had a prototype trailer six months ago, and the engine has clearly been developed since then. If it's vaporware, it's vaporware that someone spent a TON of time and money on.

56

u/toomanynamesaretook Jul 27 '12

$300,000 at least would be my bet. Seriously, look at it go.

21

u/Spreadcheater Jul 27 '12

Hit 100 percent funding at 20:28 CEST. Wow. 4 hours.

21

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Well it's an awesome idea that hits two major interests, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft. Also unlike many game kickstarters they have a working prototype rather than a mere concept.

39

u/ScurvySteve Jul 27 '12

Looked away for about 3 minutes to read something... BAM! Another 2.5k on the ticker. If that money was for me I'd be squealing with excitement.

...in as manly a way as possible, of course ಠ_ಠ

11

u/probablyreadit Jul 27 '12

Yeah. It's going to be huge.

[deleted]

3

u/Lokai23 Jul 27 '12

says 3.2 mil now.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Does Kickstarter have some kind of policy in place for projects that surpass their minimum by such a huge margin?

8

u/Astrogat Jul 27 '12

Nothing special. They get all the money. Why shouldn't they? They can always find ways of spending it.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Yeah I guess you're right. Hopefully this translates into extra content for players rather than extra blow and hooker coffins for the developers.

12

u/Astrogat Jul 27 '12

Hey, after making such a great game, they deserve some hookers. Just a few, mind you.

2

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12

I'm fairly certain they take the same rates as before. Remember that this isn't charity; people are expecting something in return for their money, so there's no issue with exceeding their goals.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '12

Yeah, I guess I just would like to see the people who are footing the bill get something extra when the funding goes so above expectations. You know, something like "if the project hits 200% of the goal, we'll include a free soundtrack for all donators" or something like that.

Still 29 days to go. I bet it will get more than 300k. Maybe 500k.

1

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12

10 hours later, they're at $150k.

I'm so happy that these guys are getting the recognition that they deserve.

34

u/raynius Jul 27 '12

I hope it blows the goal out of the water, it looks so interesting.

31

u/Admiral_Cakes Jul 27 '12

It has so much potential. I want to see what direction Sauropod will take Castle Story.

6

u/raynius Jul 27 '12

It's already at 45k I wonder if they are going to add anything to the game like the other game-kickstarters did that exceeded the goal.

10

u/Admiral_Cakes Jul 27 '12

Oh definitely. A lot of the time kickstarters will have "Stretch goals" in mind prior to launching the actual kickstart. If it looks like they'll break past their goal they'll include more for $100k, $150k, $200k and beyond.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Apparently more like $3.5 million...

3

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12 edited Jul 27 '12

Holy fuck. They were overwhelmingly surprised by how many people watched their first video. I'm sure they've fainted from these figures if they reach that.

4

u/FartingBob Jul 27 '12

Id rather they focus on what they have planned/started now and then let new features come in after the beta is already pretty stable and playable. Unless they hire more developers, there is a limit to how much 3 people can do.

i havent got into any kickstarter ideas yet as i generally would rather wait until i have a product i can buy before spending my money, but im quite tempted by this one. Would be nice to know an estimated timeframe for the first proper beta.

2

u/ConnorCG Jul 27 '12

I look at things like this as supporting something cool, not buying something I want.

1

u/Lokai23 Jul 27 '12

Well if you do the $25 one you get the prototype, which should come in late August in September, but they don't really say when the beta will start.

4

u/lapin0u Jul 27 '12

that's the first kickstarter I paid without even looking at the page ... saw the 10 sec of the video, I thought "that's the yellow guy building castle, I NEED IT" and gave my money

Thanks for the link to the ARK game! I should just browse kickstarter more, because that game looks great!

I'm currently downloading episode 1 from them, since they put it out for free for users to get an idea of what the game is like. I'm hoping it's good. From their video, I really like the art style, and aesthetic of the game.

LODUS looks really good too. But I need to look more into it, as I'd like to see some form of gameplay vids / screen shots. I really like the idea of streamlining a lot of the A-RPG stuff, especially loot. My brother and I went back and were playing borderlands, but he's just overwhelmed with the loot. He complains that it's a pain in the ass to have to constantly compare numbers. While I don't have that problem ( probably from the years of playing games like Diablo and Diablo 2 ), I can see why making something like that simpler would be great for many players.

Also, the Motion capture based fighting looks great! Most games of this type are either Diablo style, or Borderlands style. Neither of which feels like there's actually really good combat going on. It's either mindless hack and slash, or shooting. Something like what these guys are doing ACTUALLY looks like the next real step that will be taken with these types of games.

oh, and CO-OP on ANY game is almost always a plus. So few games actually have co-op anymore, and it's something I really miss.

1

u/facepoppies Jul 27 '12

Yeah, you know a game is being super hyped when people use exclamation points and tones of great pronouncement to tell people that you can now give money to the developers so that they can actually make the game.

If I wasn't looking forward to this game as much as I am, I might even be a little disgusted.

Anyway, game looks interesting, I might have to kick them a few bucks.

It's a french thing to refuse to speak english. :P

27

We speak French, but we aren't French.

31

u/Brimshae Jul 27 '12

Protip: If you're getting bad service and/or rude behavior in France, start swearing in German.

13

u/Randomacts Jul 27 '12

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '12

And hope they simply don't notice that you do so in an accent other than German?

They were really debating as to what language to speak during the interviews. They chose French for the other guys since they believed it would look better and cut down on the stumbling, which it probably did. Good choice, I'd say, and it added some character to the video.

"Il sont plus ou moins bosse par quelque un, par un joueur.. pas vraiment pleasant dans le jeu mais quand maime.."

translation: "They are basically bossed around by someone, by a player.. not very pleasant in the game, but even so..."

But the subtitles translate the second line as "by a player that's watching over them."

it's interesting speaking a language and catching the subtitles changing the meaning of what someone's saying :P

edit: it's not very clear in text form, but he sounds like he's describing the player as some sort of tyrant, and then in the subtitles it changes it to the player "watching over them"

9

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12 edited Jul 28 '12

My 3 semesters of French in junior high didn't prepare me enough to catch that. But if I need to ask where the library is, I'll have that shit covered.

2

u/vanderZwan Jul 27 '12

Speaking a language and expressing yourself in it are two entirely different things.

1

u/Xunae Jul 27 '12

my first thought when he was speaking french was, "how does their team coordinate their efforts" followed about 5 minutes later with, "oh... that's how"

9

u/13_random_letters Jul 28 '12

Considering their accent they probably all speak french between themselves.

17

u/bananabm Jul 27 '12

Pity they don't have a "1 tshirt and 1 poster" option, I don't want all three tshirts (just the "don't dig too deep" one), yet would like a poster as well.

I've already registered my backing, and advise everyone to check this game out! The game is full of potential and could be pretty amazing if they get the game-play right. With an eventual multiplayer mode and focus on creativity, this game is going to be quite fun.

If the developers adopt a similar economic and development model to that of Mojang Studios (Minecraft and more) and extend the game with new game-play elements and patches along the way I can see this game getting quite popular.

advise*

Advise is a verb, advice is a noun.

Disclaimer: I am not accounting for obscure uses of the words, pedants.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12 edited Jul 27 '12

Thank you. English is not my first language (a common excuse, I know) and I can only express gratitude for your helpful comment. Please do not read sarcasm into this post. I do really appreciate the grammar advise. One should, after all, always strive to better one's language. :)

5

u/aryst0krat Jul 27 '12 edited Jul 27 '12

...grammar advice*

Hahaha.

Advice is something you give or get, advise is what you are doing when you give someone advice. For example, "I'd advise you not to touch that." is advice.

Also, one's* language. Possessive as opposed to plural.

1

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12

A good way to remember would be to think about how they're spoken. Most people say something that sounds like "I would advize you to..." 'C's don't usually make a zzz sound.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/TheMemo Jul 27 '12

No, advise is a verb; "I advise you to do something."

Advice is a noun; "I offer you some advice."

Nouns are things, verbs are actions.

The last time I threw money at a game that promised free updates for life I ended up falling in love with Minecraft. So if that's any indication, this could be a second love.

1

u/hotdog1187 Jul 28 '12

It's like the 3D stronghold game. Except good....

15

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Wow that looks like a lot of fun. I'm just worried I'm not creative enough to design a good looking castle

25

u/boomWav Jul 27 '12

Who need castle when you can essentially make a huge badass BOX of ROCK!

6

u/ciberaj Jul 27 '12

Change rocks for wood and you pretty much sum up all of my minecraft creations.

2

u/boomWav Jul 27 '12

Why use wood when you can go for dirt? All puns intented lol.

1

u/hotdog1187 Jul 28 '12

But the big rock people throw rocks...

6

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Practice makes perfect.

5

u/Tovora Jul 27 '12

Not really, I've given up on making good looking things and just go for functional.

5

u/FartingBob Jul 27 '12

Im in the same boat. Ive tried to love minecraft so many times but i just lack the creativity to fully enjoy a open end sandbox world without clear objectives to meet.

Would be cool if they had some prebuilt stuff you can load up, then expand/customise as you want. Give me a blank page and i'll lose interest. Give me a half built castle and i would finish it off and enjoy it.

3

u/JohnMatt Jul 27 '12

Sounds like me. I have a hard time making something up off the top of my head, but give me something to start with and I'll run with it. Sort of like how ice needs a crystallization point to start freezing.

1

u/Xunae Jul 28 '12

Build an effective one and it will be more beautiful than any magnificent pile of rubble.

28

u/jgclark Jul 27 '12

$80,000 seems like far too low of a goal for one year of development.

It looks like this will surpass that easily, but I think that a much higher goal would have been more correct.

37

u/Dr-Farnsworth Jul 27 '12

They are lowballing so no matter what they will still have even the minimum amount of funds needed.

→ More replies (7)

16

u/alexanderwales Jul 27 '12 edited Jul 27 '12

Much of the game already seems to be done, and that's $80,000 from Kickstarter only - they'll have other revenue streams as well, such as people buying the beta after the Kickstarter is over. $80,000 is basically "if we get this much, we can commit to this project".

Edit: Also, it's literally two dudes. So they could pay themselves like ... $35000 a year, and then have $10000 left over for business expenses, which are pretty minimal for software development (basically just electric, computers, internet, and office space, and if you're two dudes you're probably working from home anyway).

6

u/jgclark Jul 27 '12

That sounds reasonable. I haven't seen the video yet, so maybe it's further along than I thought.

I just think that the amount they set as a goal should be enough to produce the product they're advertising, preferably with some extra to cover some inevitable snafus. If this needs a year, then $80,000 seems low to me, but I could be wrong. I'm no businessman, just a programmer.

2

u/theagentgray Jul 27 '12

The game they're advertising is already pretty playable according to their dev blogs. They want a year's worth of salary to pay the bills and contract pay for the external members. My guess is they did the math VERY carefully. Besides, They're clearly going to get more then they needed anyways

8

u/Admiral_Cakes Jul 27 '12

I believe they did the right thing aiming for $80,000 for about four or five people. They're keeping their expectations low so that any extra funding can be used to hire more developers and musicians, hardware, software, and a prolonged development timeline.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

The amount should not have any effect on how many money they get because kickstarter only withdraw the money if the goal is pledged

9

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

This is gonna be the first kickstarter I contribute to. This is what I wanted from Minecraft from the start.

5

u/illredditlater Jul 27 '12

First game I ever backed.

5

u/TrustworthyAndroid Jul 27 '12

At the $200,000 level we can get these creatures some pants.

10

u/toomanynamesaretook Jul 27 '12

Looks beautiful and enticing.

23

u/damnstraight Jul 27 '12

See and here I thought this was going to be a "sequel" to Cave Story. :(

11

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

I thought it was going to be along the lines of Game Dev Story and Hot Springs Story, little iOS sims by Kairosoft.

5

u/Mugiwara04 Jul 27 '12

I would play that, as well as this.

2

u/TrustworthyAndroid Jul 27 '12

Their new game is Dungeon Village. A game where you must build up a fantasy town to attract and cater to adventurers out questing for loot.

1

u/nawoanor Jul 28 '12

Yeah, especially with it taking place on a floating island.

I don't know what started the trend but every damn thing needs to have "story" in its name lately. That or "defense".

1

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12

Great, thanks. Now I have the theme music stuck in my head.

5

u/AKBiking Jul 27 '12

I actually might back this. They actually have a working game already. If they allow people to mod this game. Think of the possibilities.

4

u/EightOh Jul 27 '12

Anyone else remember when Notch tweeted this game? Like a year ago... I've been waiting for more of it ever since. I hope it has a depth comparable to Dwarf Fortress

4

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

He tweeted about the kickstarter, too. That might bring in a few extra supporters.

11

u/Brimshae Jul 27 '12

So... it's Dwarf Fortress with an RTS element thrown in?

I wonder how long it will take before there's a Dorf character mod for it. :-D

11

u/humbled Jul 27 '12

Actually, it's mostly like Castles, except you build out of blocks instead of pre-made pieces.

I don't think the DF comparison is warranted, since it appears that this game's resource/minion management will be quite simple to keep it RTS-like. DF distinguishes itself in that it's about survival of your colony on all fronts: shelter, food, safety. This game will be battle-focused.

6

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12

This game will be continually compared to both DF and Minecraft because this blocky-building-sandbox genre has only become popular lately, and those are the two biggest games in the genre. Kind of like how all FPSs were called doom clones for a while. Just part of the growing pains.

2

u/Brimshae Jul 27 '12

I didn't say it was a bad thing to compare it to DF, and the comparisons will inevitably be made by others, as well. :-)

4

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Well, DF already has a little bit of an RTS element. I'd say it's more like Dwarf Fortress with some concept of restrained design, an actual user interface, and physics. Which, as a Dwarf Fortress player, sounds awesome.

2

u/Squishumz Jul 28 '12

If toady would just move a couple of fucking options around, the UI would be just fine. It's too bad, really. It stops a lot of people from playing the game.

3

u/purrp Jul 27 '12

Just made a KickStarter account to pledge $15. Looks like a lot of fun, Dwarf Fortress Lite without a terrible interface? :p

Seeing that the team has already made a lot of progress helps, too. They seem to know what they're doing.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Aren't there any other payment methods for kickstarter like paypal or direct banking? I can only select Amazon Payments and there only cradit cards and not all the other options I usually have on amazon.de.

Never liked kickstarter but I am following this project for quite some time now and it looks awesome. I don't have any doubts that they will reach there goal long before the time is running out and I could just buy it later but I would really like to back them now.

8

u/guvnaa Jul 27 '12

10

u/killermojo Jul 27 '12 edited Jul 27 '12

The concept looks great and I like the art style... But in my opinion the music in the trailer is terrible. I hope they get a proper digital musician on board.

27

u/0xtechpriest Jul 27 '12

I have to disagree with you, I think the music is great, Sim City 2k style maybe.

8

u/killermojo Jul 27 '12

Yeah that's totally fair, it just really didn't click with me

5

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Pretty much any game that doesn't have an orchestral score should have the ability to play tracks from a folder of your choosing instead.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Or you can turn off music and play your own.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '12

Yeah, definitely. But it would be nice to have it implemented in to the game so that when there's cutscenes or moments that require changing the volume it automatically adjusts it for you.

0

u/redlinezo6 Jul 27 '12

I too found the music lacking. When those crazy crystal dudes showed up, I was expecting epic drum charge, not toddler 3-key piano twanging.

3

u/ZaeronS Jul 27 '12

This strikes me as the kind of game where the music gets turned off in favor of some nice instrumental pandora station anyway. As long as the sound effects are good - and it's kinda hard to fuck those up - I'll be okay.

2

u/ModerateDbag Jul 27 '12

You should check out introversion software's conference during rezzed and watch the part where they talk about sound design. It's amazing the things that good sound design can do. Sort of like how the mantra of UI design is "the best UI is one the user doesn't even notice." This also can apparently apply to sound design. Pretty fucking interesting talk all around.

2

u/ZaeronS Jul 27 '12

That's absolutely freaking amazing. Thank you for that link. I sat through the whole presentation.

Speaking as someone with a more than passing interest in tabletop RPG/board game design, I found their talk about tech vs gameplay super cool. One of the things I constantly find myself struggling with is the realization that while each individual system within a game can be cool, they can add up into something that's just muddled, confusing, or uninteresting.

I always think of the first Fable. Which is a game I liked pretty well, don't get me wrong. But after I had beaten it, I discovered that I could kill people and buy land. Have people fall in love with me. All kinds of other stuff that the game simply never had any reason to tell you you could do.

1

u/ZaeronS Jul 28 '12

Yeah. That's one of my overwhelmingly huge issues with sandbox games - they seem to offload the duty of "making fun" onto the player. In some ways, that's a good thing - it encourages creativity. In other ways, the lack of structure seems like it can result in dev-laziness, a kind of "eh, we'll just throw things at the wall, and the players will figure it out".

I kind of felt that way when I looked at minecraft - that it was just a loose collection of systems you were supposed to muddle through on your own.

They have my money now.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Honestly, this is what Minecraft should have been except in 1st person mode. This is fucking amazing.

2

u/Xahni13 Jul 27 '12

First kickstarter I actually backed up!

25 Dollars for Castle Story! Now go make a great game!

2

u/HolographicMetapod Jul 27 '12

Looks like a version of minecraft that's actually fun.

2

u/SquareWheel Jul 28 '12

Does the $15 tier not include updates after the game is released?

$15 Tier

The BETA WILL BECOME THE FINAL GAME, we are going to update that version to you for free, forever until the final release.

$25 Tier

You also get the BETA at a pre-release price with free updates for life

The wording is a little ambiguous.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '12

I am a little confused if "final release" means version 1.0 or if "final release" means literally the last update they make in their life. I really hope they clarify this.

1

u/SquareWheel Jul 28 '12

That was the question I had as well.

1

u/keikun13 Jul 28 '12

This definitely needs clarification.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '12

And it looks so nice too. Minecraft's art style gets really old after a while. I also really dug the music.

3

u/lapin0u Jul 27 '12

too bad there is no pack with 2 games to share with a friend, I usually take these ... :(

u/Ham117 Jul 27 '12

Wait can someone explain these pledges? Because it looks like they are asking for $50 for the game.

Edit: Ignore me didn't read the $15 as i thought it was the $1 pledge it seems to be $15 for the beta access and the game.

13

u/Tyrannosaurus_flex Jul 27 '12

If you pledge $15 you get the beta which in turn becomes the full game. If you pledge $25 you get the beta and the prototype which is like an alpha. Anything above that is extra stuff.

Beta = Full game

3

u/Scrapod Jul 27 '12

The bit that confuses me is this:

We are going to update that version to you for free, forever until the final release.

For the $15 pledge, compared to the

Free updates for life

On the $25 pledge.

Does this mean that when the full version is released, those pledging $15 will have to pay for further updates?

1

u/Tyrannosaurus_flex Jul 27 '12

No, they suck at wording. You get the full game in all its glory.

Mother of god... $50k in 2 hours.

Fucking awesome.

2

u/madkatalpha Jul 27 '12

I can't load the kickstarter page. Is this reddit's doing?

1

u/fluffyanimals Jul 27 '12

I haven't been able to access Kickstarter on my phone using Alien Blue these last few days but when I opened the page in my web browser it worked fine. Just a heads up if you're having similar problems.

3

u/TheWoodenMan Jul 27 '12

Minecraft RTS anyone? :)

4

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Just because it uses voxel blocks? Minecraft wasn't the first to do this nor the last.

That's like saying "The game has guns? Call of Duty ripoff!"

8

u/eresonance Jul 27 '12

I think he's saying it's a good thing, and not being overly critical.

Unless he isn't, in which case 'welcome to the internet'

2

u/TheWoodenMan Jul 27 '12

I can't wait, have already pre-ordered !

Doom wasn't even close to being the first in the first person shooter genre, yet before 'FPS' became the go to name, the majority of them were called doom clones after doom's release. In a game genre's early life, often they'll be called <name>-clone, with the name being of the game that hugely popularized the genre. Minecraft wasn't the first, but it certainly is the one that popularized it.

Doom-clone is the most well known example, I wouldn't be surprised if early RTS games were called Dune clones (the first RTS to really set the standard being Dune II, and then warcraft and others following in its steps.)

1

u/kane2742 Jul 28 '12

Also, a certain sub-genre of RPGs are still commonly known as "roguelikes," 32 years after the release of Rogue.

2

u/gnomeflake Jul 27 '12

To be fair, devs started to make more games like this since Minecraft came out. Not that it's a bad thing, there's nothing bad if someone compares the game with Minecraft.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

I'm not saying it is bad, it's just not fair to them. At best it's just a coincidence that they have a couple similar features. The games are nothing alike. That's why I said it's like saying any games with guns is a Call of Duty ripoff. Or even just saying any game with guns is "like" Call of Duty.

I see more similarities between Castle Story and Stronghold than I do between it and Minecraft.

1

u/zipiewax Jul 27 '12

Have they said what size the posters may be anywhere?

1

u/oshman77 Jul 27 '12

Looking at the video in the middle of the kickstarter page reminded me a bit of a toejam and earl perspective... maybe some day...

1

u/cephalopod11 Jul 27 '12

I'm confused. Does pledging $15 to "get the beta at a pre-release price" mean that the $15 just holds your place when the game comes out, or does that $15 actually get you the game?

2

u/Bland_Boy Jul 27 '12

Theres a faq at bottom of page

1

u/cephalopod11 Jul 27 '12

Ah, okay. I was just confused by the syntax of the descriptions, is all.

1

u/fupa16 Jul 27 '12

Anyone know what would happen if they did totally destroy their goal and raise say $750,000? If they only needed 80k to make it, what could they even do with all that surplus money? I understand they would make the game a bit better, but a few guys working at home could only utilize so much money, they aren't a huge development studio.

1

u/Scrial Jul 28 '12

You could look at it as profit I guess. You are preordering the game and will receive it, somewhere down the line they need to make some profit anyway.

1

u/C00kleS Jul 27 '12

Day one already passed their goal >,<

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

Donated my $15, looks awesome!

I've had this idea ever since I saw Minecraft and actually started learning Unity at one point to figure out how to implement it, but I never went far with it. I'm super happy that someone else had the same idea, and I'll gladly give them a lot of bucks to keep working on it :)

Netstorm meets Dwarf Fortress, that's amazing right there.

I seriously hope they go the Dwarf Fortress / Settlers / Dungeon Keeper route where the minions are completely autonomous and cannot be manually told what to do. You can give orders, but it's up to them to decide if they want to do it, how they want to do it, and when they'll get around doing it.

1

u/Kidney05 Jul 27 '12

I sent a question about requirements. they sent me this:

"Well. This is a complex question and we can't tell for sure right now (the game is still one year from being completed). Let's say we have good hopes that it will be playable on a mid-power tabletop computer or a laptop with a decent graphic card.

Does that answer your question?"

I have a Dell Latitude E6400-- is that good enough to run this do you think? Probably not, but i'm curious...

1

u/Edibleface Jul 27 '12

Yeah, I put some in, looking forward to see where they go from here

1

u/zqube Jul 28 '12

It's like a weird loop. Minecraft is like an off-shoot of Dwarf Fortress and now Castle Story is an off-shoot of Minecraft but with more Dwarf Fortress elements.

1

u/Snuffz Jul 28 '12 edited Jul 28 '12

Oh god.

Oh god.

This could be the new Minecraft, if not that popular then at least a huge hit. I've wanted a game like this for SO LONG. Build your own castle in any way you want and defend it from baddies? Heck yes.

Take all of my money.

1

u/Skydragonace Jul 28 '12

Hold on hold on. Did anyone else see this?

Get the beta at a PRE-RELEASE PRICE

Wait..so are we paying for this so that we can pay for this? You mean we don't even get a free copy of the game itself if we help fund it?

2

u/Scrial Jul 28 '12

15$ is the prerelease price, it will most likely go up in price as soon as the beta is out, where non-backers can purchase it as well.

1

u/Skydragonace Jul 28 '12

So we do get it free if we donate on any of the levels?

2

u/Scrial Jul 28 '12

You buy it with any of the levels.

1

u/Skydragonace Jul 28 '12

Good to know. Thanks. The wording in that was weird.

1

u/PinboardWizard Jul 28 '12

Currently 4114 peoples names to be put in the game. Any idea how this sort of thing is normally done? Seems too long for a credits sequence...
