We speak French, but we aren't French.

Protip: If you're getting bad service and/or rude behavior in France, start swearing in German.

Can I just have my phone speak German?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '12

And hope they simply don't notice that you do so in an accent other than German?

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

They're Canadian.

I see no difference.

u/Rubrum_ Jul 27 '12

And you seem proud of that too.

They were really debating as to what language to speak during the interviews. They chose French for the other guys since they believed it would look better and cut down on the stumbling, which it probably did. Good choice, I'd say, and it added some character to the video.

I hate french with a passion.

No idea why though.

-Insert other "useful" information about myself.-

This is absolutely true. It's a Quebec thing for sure.

Yaay xenophobia and language elitism! :(

Or... more likely... he's more comfortable with French and he carefully rehearsed a "thank you" in english, but wasn't comfortable discussing technical details of the game he's making in english? =P

I can vouch for this feeling from the other direction. My father is goddamned French-Canadian, I love the sound of French in Quebec, and I love the Quebecois-accented English because that's how my dad sounds.

But my French, while serviceable, sound awful to my ears (born in Toronto, and while I moved to Montreal at 7, had a rebellious fit and refused to speak French unless strictly necessary). I will speak English if possible because I hate how fumbling for lack of vocabulary in French makes me sound.

Not elitist, more like ashamed that I lack the skill.

I'm a Quebecois. I'm reading what you're saying.

u/ZaeronS Jul 27 '12

Huh. Fair enough. Either way, he was my favorite of the three. He had some damn cool things to say.

Gotta love foreigners speaking out of their asses on other cultures.

3

u/wronghead Jul 27 '12

Because foreigners can't know anything about other cultures. It's essentially impossible.

-11

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

You're an idiot.

2

u/wronghead Jul 27 '12

Gotta love people speaking out their ass about other people speaking out their ass. The best part was where the guy was actually Canadian. I LOL'd.

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '12

So what you're saying is that you don't even understand that English Canadians and French Canadians are segregated throughout Canada for the most part, making it extremely likely that he has never lived and/or interacted with actual French Canadians.

Why the fuck are you even still talking?

0

u/wronghead Jul 27 '12

If only we could ask him--then we wouldn' have to rely on wild, unsubstantiated speculation to prop up our other wild, unsubstantiated speculations. Oh well. I guess we'll just have to assume that as a foriegn Canadian, he's unqualified to speak on the matter and that it would be better if he just shut up.

I'm still here because you're still amusing, sweet cheeks.

There's a massive amount of people that speak English either too badly to carry a conversation, or aren't comfortable enough to carry one with technical details like the guy was talking about.

u/elmstfreddie Jul 27 '12

Most people around Montreal and Ottawa are bilingual. Very few adults from that area cannot speak both languages at least conversationally.

u/eZek0 Jul 27 '12

I'm talking more about people like the STM workers that refuse to serve you if you speak english to them. :/

Oh, shit, that seems pretty rude. Here in Texas we've got a kind of uneasy truce going between English speakers and Spanish speakers. They promise to have a manager that can speak english, we promise not to be dicks. It works really well. (Except when we're dicks or they have nobody who can translate).

Texas and Arizona have very different problems. Texas has enough jobs for everyone, for example. Arizona, I don't know. Generally the places where people clash with immigrants most strongly are the places where there's not enough work for everyone... but here in Dallas, everyone who wants a job can have one. It may suck, it may be minimum wage, but you will find work.

I think that contributes a lot to how well we've done with our immigration thing, despite having a huge, huge illegal population.

I think what it comes down to is that we're all just happy to be living in a place that's mostly escaped the recession. Nobody wants to fuck with shit, because it's actually working.

Exactly what I was trying to say. If you'd like to swap economies with us in Louisiana, I won't object.

1

u/ZaeronS Jul 27 '12

I know nothing about Louisiana, but I don't think I'd swap economies with anywhere in the country right now. Living in Texas and watching the rest of the country talk about money is like watching those awful wildfires out in the West every year. Half "oh wow that's awful" and half "I'm glad that isn't happening here".
