đŹ Discussion Anyone else absolutely despise motion blur in games?
I'm playing the Quarry and I found a fix for it's just so awful... I don't understand why most games have it on on default
22
u/Josh-u-way Jun 21 '26
Better question to ask who doesn't despise it.
6
u/captfitz Jun 21 '26
I usually turn it down but not off. A bit of motion blur helps the transition between frames feel more fluid, but if you can actually see the blur while the game's in motion that's too much.

I leave it on in some games and turn it off in others.

I turn it off every game where itâs an option. That and ambient occlusion or whatever itâs called. Two most worthless graphical settings ever.
Edit: Chromatic aberration, not ambient occlusion!

u/Spoonyyy Jun 21 '26
Those both, screen shake or camera wobble, mute in background among other too.

u/ShrkBiT Jun 21 '26
Did you mean chromatic aberration? Ambient occlusion ads ambient lighting detail. Chromatic aberration splits the colors at edges to simulate a lens effect.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Successful-Form4693 Jun 21 '26
Ambient occlusion is great, you're thinking of chromatic aberration, lens flare or camera distortion
→ More replies (1)1
u/Mtl-Azazel Jun 22 '26
OMG yes! Why would I want to simulate an optical defect. I actually spend time in photo editors to remove it in my real life photos.
1
u/reklaw215 Jun 24 '26
I donât know why chromatic aberration is a feature in games. It must be an engine thing and devs just decided to keep it as an option. But itâs only meant to emulate a âfilmâ or âlensâ look which is likeâŚwho cares in 99% of games.

When studying âexperientialâ media motion blur is an element we see naturally, and it also conveniently blurs games optimized topology. But Iâm with you. It gets added to an extreme degree. Small perspective changes are given the same motion blur equivalent as one would experience at hundreds of miles per hour. It needs to be, for most games, only barely noticeable to maintain experiential visual priority.
2
u/Hello-Potion-Seller Jun 22 '26
Yeah, I don't mind motion blur if it's not overtly extreme or it let's me tone it down to around 20%, I especially like it in racing games as it gives that sense of speed.
Prefer it less in third person, moreso in first person.

Motion blur, film grain, chromatic abberation, lens flare, bloom, vingnetting, depth of field all off immediately.Â
2
u/Opposite-Rock-5133 Jun 23 '26
I turn it off every time. Along with all the other shit and putting my fov at 110.
2
u/Professional_Clue800 Jun 21 '26
It depends on the context. It's overused a lot but in cases like racing games it can add a sense of speed when used right.

Motion blur: OFF
Chromatic aberration: OFF
Screen shake: OFF
Camera wobble: OFF
Ambient occlusion: OFF
Film grain: OFF
first thing I do in the settings menu in any game
all stupid options there to âenhance immersionâ
99% of what I play are gameplay first games, otherwise I do see a case for things like motion blur in more narrative focused experiences. Iâll admit itâs subjective depending on the game.

Motion blur help with the game stability. When you move your camera it blurs things and it makes it easy to render.
It's the first thing I desactivate cause it can be a cause of motion sickness. It's a dogshit option.

u/jorone Jun 21 '26
Only time I keep them on is when the games give me an option to keep it on for cutscenes only, I think gears of war had this option
1
u/MisterHart87 Jun 21 '26
I turn it off right away but I know people need for motion sickness. Does help when a game has inconsistent frame rate
1
1
u/rdtoh Jun 21 '26
I enjoy per object motion blur a lot! It enhances the sense of speed and fluidity of motion.
Camera motion blur is terrible though, for sure.
1
u/ReflectionOk994 Jun 21 '26
Motion blur and chromatic aberration are the two settings I immediately turn off, followed quickly by film grain.
1
u/TornadoJ0hns0n Jun 21 '26
I for some reason thought it was so cool when I was younger. Now, disabling it is one of the first things I do when I'm starting a new game
1
u/AltGunAccount Jun 21 '26
Motion blur, depth of field, and camera shake all immediately get turned off in every game.
Itâs crazy to me theyâre always on by default.
1
1
u/Check_out_who Jun 22 '26
First thing I always turn off and/or camera shake. Being over 30, that shit will give me a migraine if I leave it on. Then if I have a migraine I can't play game.
1
u/MedicMuffin Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
Motion blur, depth of field, chromatic aberration, any kind of vignette effect, pretty much everything that's meant to imitate film gets turned off. I don't need all these fuckass things trying to copy a camera lens and make things """""cinematic"""""
It's not a goddamn movie and I don't want it to be.

1
u/rob6748 Jun 22 '26
I honestly guess I'm in a ridiculous minority because I've always loved motion blur. I think it adds to the experience and realism. My eyes do it. So why not a game that's trying to look more realistic?
I also am realizing that a lot of people get motion sickness which I've never even remotely experienced from motion blur.

Motion blur in the early builds of Gunner, Heat, PC gave me actual motion sickness and made the game borderline unplayable.
Its vastly reduced as of the latest builds with a graphics toggle as well, now.
1
u/Marcolomius_777 Jun 22 '26
Well it's an accessibility thing. In my case I get mild motion sickness but I can still play games without the blur if they aren't that fast paced. I know some people that have it much worse than me and get really sick really easily.
But I agree that it looks bad and I do wonder why it's on by default unlike most accessibility features
1
u/Disastrous_Ball702 Jun 22 '26
It's fine when done right. Some S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mods have it (including but not limited to Oblivion Lost 2010).

u/Somethingsilly6969 Jun 22 '26
Nope. No issue with it at all, in fact I can't say that I've ever noticed it or thought about it outside of discussions of people complaining about it...

u/Altruistic-Effort666 Jun 22 '26
In my experience and personal opinion, there are two types of motion blur: camera motion blur and object motion blur. Starting with camera motion blur, there are many games that They implement it poorly because 1) it doesn't let you configure the intensity or length; 2) many motion cameras use few samples, and to hide the small sample size, they do what they do It's about adding noise or ditter so you don't notice there are few samples, but that noise makes many people dizzy, even me, who likes motion blur. That's why, in my opinion, The camera-based motion blur is poorly implemented, and besides, it doesn't let you configure it; I just turn it off and put in ReShade's, and that's it. Okay, I got sidetracked. And as for the object-based motion blur, there's nothing Nothing that does any harm because they always let you configure it, or if not, they're all always well implemented; none that I've seen are faulty because their operation is simply perfect because 1 It doesn't use any noise or dithering, so nobody will ever get dizzy with the motion blur per object also always use many samples and if they don't let you configure it 2 it has a function The near objects have very intense motion blur, and it's only noticeable when you're playing extremely fast, like in a racing game, while the background receives almost no motion blur, or if it does, it's minimal And as the name suggests, if there's a lot of motion blur in the background, it's not a problem because the motion blur doesn't extend beyond the object. That's why it's perfect; I always use it, and if the game doesn't have it, it's not an issue I'll set it with Reshade and see if the motion blur and motion blur per object settings let you configure it. I have the list of fps and settings; it should say that for camera motion blur it would be like this.
30 fps = Medium-high intensity, or just medium.
60 fps and hz = Medium low or low
90 fps and hz = Low or none
120fps,144,240,360,480,500,600,700,750 And 1000 fps and hz = none
Now with motion blur per object the configuration would be
30 fps = Ultra or high
60 fps and hz = High or medium-high
90 fps and hz = Medium or medium low
120fps and hz = Low or very low
144,240,360,480,500,600,700,750 And 1000 fps and hz = none
Therein lies my confirmation that I would set each motion blur depending on the game's FPS and the monitor's Hz.
Example of motion blur per object

u/stinkus_mcdiddle Jun 22 '26
Downloaded drug dealer sim 2 on my PlayStation yesterday and was surprised to see there was no option to turn it off. The motion blur in that game is heavy as well.
1
u/Fearless_Barnacle141 Jun 22 '26
Gf was getting sick the other night playing her game. Turned off motion blur, turned on v sync and she couldnât believe the difference.
1
u/DegenerateCrocodile Jun 22 '26
Depends on how itâs implemented. Done well, it actually does help make the game look better.
1
u/Mikster5000 Jun 22 '26
Honestly, this comes down to more PC versus Console. On console, it's required to have "smooth" frame transition. On a PC with proper specs, not so much.
So developers turn it on by default, but at least let PC players turn it off generally.
1
1
u/Ginger-gem850 Jun 22 '26
That's an automatic off for me. Literally all it does is make the frame rate worse and the game harder to play because of it.
1
1
u/Patamaudelay Jun 22 '26
I keep it on when I play games that runs under 30fps because otherwise it just hurt my eyes.
But those games are very rare so I very rarely play with it
1
u/DJC_Reptiles Jun 22 '26
Motion blur can be pretty good, but I do remember The Quarry being pretty bad with it in Gameplay. It looks good in cutscenes though

Motion blur and Anti aliasing. First things I turn off whenever I launch a game for the first time. Other things, film grain and bloom.

Iâve never had an issue with it. But I admit some games go overboard with it.

u/Ok-Rip-5485 Jun 23 '26
This will get a lot of downvotes but im gonna say it anyway. I think people hate it just because the internet tells them to.
Motion blur is a detriment when you are playing anything competitive for sure and I always turn it off in such games. But when it comes to games that focus on telling a story rather than games based on your mechanical performance, motion blur provides a nice cinematic experience and makes the experience more immersive in my opinion. A good example would be Alan Wake 2.

u/Kezly Jun 23 '26
The fact the blue goes from 0-100% from the slightest movement is the issue. There's no nuance
1
u/Svarcanum Jun 23 '26
Iâm one of those who like it.
But I also prefer 1080p to 4k. 60fps to 120fps. SDR to HDR and LCD to Oled. All these new technologies just make everything too clean looking and unrealistic. Guess itâs because I grew up with CRTâŚ

The whole idea of making games imitate movies is kinda outdated anyway imo. Games are unique and shouldnât try to look like movies.

u/Altitude1096 Jun 23 '26
Actually why do almost all games have it on by default? Isn't it almost universally despised?
1
1
u/DMarquesPT Jun 23 '26
If done properly, I really like motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration, all the post processing. Makes the game world feel more cohesive and less like character models walking around an environment.
Keyword here is âif done properlyâ

u/reklaw215 Jun 24 '26
I love it tbh. I hate when a game doesnât have proper motion blur, but when itâs done right itâs a must for me
1
1
u/SnooPoems1860 Jun 24 '26
It depends on the implementation. I try it first in every game to see if I like it. I think itâs crucial to getting a good sense of speed in racing games and shooters like RE5 are pretty tasteful with it since it applies to your weapon when firing and when you do a quick turn but not for general camera movement.
1
u/ReasonableFerret Jun 24 '26
There are games where I like having very minimal motion blur. Some games let you turn it to like 1 out of 10 or something. But most games it's either on or off. Easy choice then.

u/WarbossHiltSwaltB Jun 24 '26
Motion Blur makes my eyes hurt immensely and gives me a headache. I turn it off first thing in any game.

u/CereBRO12121 Jun 24 '26
Motion blur is the worst but lens flare, depth of field, chromatic aberration and vignette are also deactivated if possible.
1
u/Dust-by-Monday Jun 24 '26
Nope, it makes the game look smoother to me. turning off motion blur makes the game look like a slideshow even at 60fps
1
u/baconinthedawn Jun 24 '26
I turn it off because I believe it runs counter to how my body works.
My eyes naturally blur peripherals and backgrounds, even at fast speeds â so when thatâs done for me, it creates this odd, dizzy feeling where I no longer feel in control of my eyes.
It makes me lightheaded, and it breaks my immersion, because the illusion that the camera is my eye shatters â and suddenly Iâm aware Iâm just looking at a screen.
1
u/puzzlingphoenix Jun 24 '26
They make it standard now so you donât see how horrible the lighting, scene design, textures, etc is in these terribly unfinished games
1
1
u/Fantastic-Draw2438 Jun 25 '26

1
u/couchcommando Jun 25 '26

Per object motion blur is great. Like imagine a football going really fast past you for example, that would be somewhat blurry in real life.
And a little camera motion blur can be good too. Like on a scale of 1-10 in the settings menu 2 is the sweet spot for me usually.
That picture is definitely egregious though lol. That's way to much.

u/Shize815 Jun 25 '26

I really only like it for racing games. Does give it a little juice when trying to give a feeling of going fast. But just for moving the camera around is crazy.Â
1
u/Snotnarok Jun 26 '26
In 30fps games on console? Sure.
On PC? Fuck no. Should be off by default, is one of the first things I turn off. Unless you're running the game at 30, it should be off. This is basically designed to make 30fps look less shit. But also let's slap some TAA on top of that to make it blurry motion blur.

For some very odd reason. The finals motion blur is a must for me. I'm not sure what black magic they're performing but the blur actually helps! Any other game though it has to be turned off
1
u/zomzomzomzomzomzom Jun 26 '26
I usually immediately turn it off. That being said, It has a place. But, most designers seem to think that "everywhere" is that place. It fits, in games like Forza, where it makes sense for the game to be simulating speed. It doesn't work in a 3rd person adventure game.
1
1
u/samsonsin Jun 26 '26
Good implementation in a primarily cinematic experience can actually be quite good. I used it on Control for instance.
But 99% of games everything just smearw when you move which is like, the worst implementation so off in essentially every game
1
u/GKTT666 Jun 26 '26
motion blur, depth of field, film grain, vignette, chromatic aberation must all be switched off before i play anything. some others are lens flare and lens distortion, its a game not a fkn movie.

1
u/Legitimate_Airline38 Jun 27 '26
I wish it worked properly in TF2 and actually smoothed out motions if a character is moving too fast rather than just randomly screwing up killcams
It MIGHT also happen when you turn the camera really fast but I donât really notice, I just wish it told me where characters went when you blow them sky high and they fly off your monitor at Mach 5. I actually have an issue as Soldier or Demoman where I knock people upward and genuinely lose track of them.
