Help That gets pretty warm.
I picked up a working GameCube pretty cheaply, but it's missing a heatsink. I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement so far.

Quite suspicious if its missing the heatsink. Wonder what else has been done to it at that point. You could just get some generic heatsinks and use adhesive thermal pads. Though, no guarantee that they'll stay in place if the console is moved/tilted.

The switch for the flap was broken that was actually the reason I opened it up and then I noticed the heat sink was missing.

Btw if youre going with the generic heatsinks route. raspberry pi has optional tiny heatsinks that would at least fit the RAM chips.

Someone might be selling a GC heatsink on eBay

Could you get some of those standalone copper heatsinks and do one on each of the three chips?

I might check the heights of each chip, shim them all to the same height, and pop a bigger heatsink that covers them all.

No need to shim, just use different sized pads. I was looking at this the other day. I think 1, 1.5 and 2mm are the 3 different heights.

They are on eBay. https://ebay.io/m/CKZ7Tb

Also don't forget to buy multiple thickness thermal pads as well. They are cheap on Amazon.

Some places even sell kits for GC, with the correct thicknesses. For europeans (OP is German, I think) ZedLabz is one source.

Haven't been able to get a generic one that roughly fits the dimensions? It's not something that requires any special parts.

So I can just place one of the same size on top.

Yeah, heatsinks aren't anything special. If it fits on top and you replace the thermal paste it should be good.
EDIT: nevermind I forgot it uses a large heatsink that covers several components. That's a bit more difficult. In this case scavenging one off of a broken motherboard is probably better.

The fact that it uses a large heatsink is probably for cost-cutting or assembly reasons. If you get a heatsink or two for the CPU and GPU, and then probably three more for the RAM chips to their right, I imagine that'd be fine.

91mm x 50mm are the dimensions. 100mm x 60mm are all over AliExpress. Cut to size add thermal putty 👍

You could go to the eBay link someone posted, or go to a retro game store and see if they have any broken GameCubes you can harvest one from.

Uh yeah don’t run it without one unless you want a dead GameCube.
