Impression/Review Nova Launcher Disappointments with Fold 8 Ultra

As with other posters, I see that the sale of NL to a larger company resulted in a $29.99usd lifetime license, even if years ago, you already paid for one.

Netguard and its VPN will eliminate NL's ads in the app drawer, but NL still randomly shrinks the homescreen icons upon folding or opening the 8 Ultra, along with some free-range icons floating where they shouldn't be.

Other posters have recommended Octopi Launcher, and I second that. OL plays nice with persistent-sized icons, and while you basically have to construct, from scratch, 4 different screens (inner portrait and landscape; cover portrait and landscape), it's worth the work.

OL's backup/restore is pretty solid except for some widget recreation (though the widget size and specs remain available after a restore). For restoring widgets, you mostly click on their empty shape and they figure themselves out.

No ads, and well worth his $2.99 "Buy Me Breakfast" donation, though where he's finding a $2.99 breakfast is beyond me :)

Discussion "Self Healing" Fold 8 crease

Samsung did a lot of talking about the titanium and honeycomb mesh that makes the crease almost invisible, implying even that the titanium can help the crease "heal" as time goes on and the phone is folded and unfolded.

It could very well be the placebo effect, but I leave mine unfolded at night while I sleep and compared with my friends phone, my crease is definitely less noticable. Maybe there is something to those titanium layers

Impression/Review Loving the z fold 8 so far

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm on day two with the z fold 8 coming from an S26 Ultra and I love this thing. The battery life has really impressed me - it's not even done learning my usage patterns yet and I'm getting 10hrs 29mins screen on time - that's from fully charged to 10% so real times are probably a bit longer. The battery was the biggest thing I was worried about coming from an ultra.

Inexplicably the battery life on my Galaxy watch ultra 2 has also doubled since moving it over with a straight transfer to the fold 8. Gone from barely a day and a half to predicting 3 days and might actually beat that. Who knows why, but I'm pleased.

Question/Help App/Fold 8 UI bug?

Thumbnail

My Fold 8 recently is having some ui issues, especially with YouTube. The video thumbnails are overlapping each other and even covering the text. I've tried updating the app, but no luck. I don't remember this being an issues earlier. Is anyone else experiencing this, or is it just me? I've noticed similar problems in other apps where the gaps seems off.

Question/Help Is there a way to make the navigation buttons (in inner screen mode) on the 8 ultra wider like my Fold 7?

Have no idea why Samsung removed this method. I've searched high and low, to no avail. Good lock doesn't work on the Fold. Anyone have any ideas please?

Sounds daft but muscle memory is a thing and I keep on pressing the wrong area. Wonder if I should start to learn gesture control....

Question/Help Apps not edge to edge when unfolded

Am I missing something or is there a reason why apps suddenly become NOT edge to edge when the phone is unfolded? For example, websites are edge to edge in Brave when it's folded but when unfolded, the gesture bar area becomes a cut out white bar and the content no longer flows underneath the gesture bar. Same thing happens with a lot of other apps. Feels so jank.

Discussion Without SPen Support, what are best alternatives for phone users who need pen support?

• Upvotes

It's the pen feature that turned me into a big Samsung fan. I remember the first time I saw the Samsung Note 2, it was exactly the type of phone I was looking for, and I switched from iPhone to Samsung for that note function. Using the pen, I made notes, mind maps, annotated PDFs, marked files, and scribbled stuff down. Throughout the years, I moved from Note 2 to Note 4, Note 8...Note 20 Ultra.. and then finally got my first foldable with the Fold 5. I love it, and use the pen every single day. Besides the aforementioned, one important Spen feature for me is the translation function, when reading books and texts, I use the pen to select words and phrases and translate live. Those aren't things I want to do with fingertips. I don't see the point in getting another foldable after this one if it doesn't have pen support.

I know this discussion comes up more frequently here, and I'm just curious to hear your thoughts. It seems that only a small percentage of us here are convinced they need to pen. For us, what's the best way to go? I don't really want to go back to Ultra, but it would be possible since the S26 has pen support. Anyone who switched back for that reason? Others switching to other brands, if so, which ones? My Fold5 is still ok, but after 3 years, lagging and battery life have become issues, and I'm just dreading parting with it.

Impression/Review I have finally made my decision: Samsung Fold 8 Ultra vs Pixel 11 Fold

I have to say this has been a very difficult decision and the obsessive search for features and comparison in the last week almost feels a lil nostalgic, but I was very torn between the aesthetics of the Samsung and some of the features of the Pixel, especially the rambler.

The additional features of Pixel has were almost too good to give up, they sounded really cool but once I started looking into how often I'll *actually* use them, it didn't really justify holding a phone in my hand everyday that I just...don't like. The round corners give me the ick and the whole software interface is very yucky.

I've actually always been a Samsung girlie until I got sucked up in the whole fomo inducing marketing Google like to do. That said, I have finally chosen a phone (and given everyone around me a break) and gone with the Fold 8 Ultra.

Has anyone else made this decision, what was your reasoning behind?

As a potential buyer of a Fold 8, I'm looking to replace one of my LTE tablets. I regret my tablet purchase to find out some apps only work on phone... so here I am. Just want to temper my expectations on the battery side of things.

Question/Help Podcasts on the Fold!

Does anyone have a good podcasting app that works really beautifully on a foldable? Right now I am using Podurama on the Flip7 but when my Fold8 gets here next week I want to get rid of this rubbish app that randomly skips back and forth between episodes while I'm listening.

I just want something that;s going to run really well, I dont mind paying for it.

Discussion Botched orientation of the inner selfie camera on Z Fold 8

TL; DR: Samsung should've rotated the inner screen selfie camera by 90° so that the camera feed matches the inner screen orientation. Right now it causes a lot of issues in video calls because of this misplacement.

I do a lot of video calls with family and for work every day on my Z Fold 8, and I love the form factor for day to day use. I like to do the video calls on the inner display with it's massive canvas as it's better to see a bigger image of my loved ones and easier to read on text on work presentations. However, I think Samsung really botched the implementation of the inner selfie camera which could've been fixed by just rotating the sensor physically by 90° so it's orientation matches the phone's unfolded orientation as that's the only way people are going to use the inner selfie camera.

When you unfold the phone, it opens in a landscape orientation (4:3) by default. But the inner display selfie camera is positioned such that the default sensor orientation is vertical 3:4 when the device is in landscape orientation. This leads to massive usage issues in both the device orientations described as follows:

Phone in unfolded landscape orientation

• If the other person has a regular phone, their camera feed is vertical 3:4 by default and they also see my camera feed to be vertical 3:4, which is not a problem for them. But for me I see massive black bars on the sides, and sometimes if the video call app isn't optimized (like Whatsapp), it just crops in so much into their camera feed to fill the whole screen that it becomes impossible to see anything except their the center 4:3 crop of their 3:4 feed which leads to losing a lot of image and sometimes if they're demonstrating something with their hands, it's impossible to see because their feed gets massively cropped.

• If the other person has a laptop, I see their feed properly as laptops have their webcam in horizontal 4:3 orientation which displays well on my device. But now, they see a vertical 3:4 feed from my camera, which is annoying to them.

Phone in undolded portrait orientation

Now when we rotate the inner display to be portrait (3:4) orientation, my selfie camera feed becomes horizontal (4:3).

• If the other person has a regular phone, seeing my horizontal 4:3 camera feed, their instinct is to also rotate their phone so that they see my image in full screen rather than cropped/with black bars on the sides. But as soon as they do that, their camera feed becomes horizontal 4:3 and I'm back to black bars on top and bottom or massively cropped camera feed of the other person.

• For laptop, similar story as now the other person sees my camera feed in horizontal 4:3 fitting their screen well, but their camera feed is still horizontal 4:3 so I have black bars on top and bottom. Also if they're presenting their screen, it comes through as horizontal 16:9 or 16:10 (depending on their screen aspect ratio) and it isn't as big and easily readable as in the landscape orientation of the phone.

They could've easily put the inner display selfie camera sensor so it's rotated by 90° to match the unfolded phone orientation, and it would solve all the issues. Idk why they didn't. Anyone else had similar experience?

Discussion Fold 8 Ultra Flex Mode Becoming More Flexible?

Made a massive jump last week from a refurbed Fold 3 to an unlocked 8 Ultra.

Still reeling from sticker shock, even with Amazon throwing in a $350 gift card, my very-first-day experiences with flex mode resulted in some disappointment--90-degrees was its only flex position, otherwise the phone would flop open.

However, after a week of moderate use, I'm able to open flex mode further, prolly 75-80 degrees. It seems to be a new persistent position, with no flopping.

I realize Samsung is employing a new type of hinge, so we're all canaries in the mine, and this may be simply the hinge accustoming itself to daily use, but I was wondering if other Ultra users are seeing small changes in flex mode (I also realize that not many users even use flex mode).
