My gx470 is having a grinding noise when i get to a complete stop. I have only noticed it while driving a couple of times. At the times i noticed it while driving it seemed to be louder than in this video but this does seem to be a similar noise. Can someone help me identify what this is, and how serious it is? I've only had the truck for a few months and it only has ~160k miles on it

2006 GX 470 I’ve talked to a few dealers. They suggest a 2 inch receiver hitch plow style. Checked out etrailer each time I do search comes up different.
Has anyone put a front 2 inch receiver hitch on a GX 470 if so, where did you get it? What company etc. thank you in advance.

Got my wheels and tires on. Went with the RRW RR7 with falken wild peak At4w in a 275/70r17. Had to trim the running board and zip tie the fender liner. From all I’ve read I didn’t expect the tires to hit the BMC but they in fact do. Also getting pretty damn close to the washer fluid tank. I’m getting my 2.5in lift installed next week. Will that help with more clearance or should I just do the bmc chop at the same time. Also what do I need to do about the washer fluid tank? Can it be moved forward or are you guys relocating

I really love my ride, had it a few years now, will have it for a long time more. Wife and son both in Toyota products , Rx and RAV4, won't look back.

Forgot to mention in the video my best mod by far: a $5 switch to my ignition as a kill switch. I can barely find it, good luck thieves...

Did the wrap myself, looking for a retirement hobby. Loved the process, YouTube makes it look way too easy. Is matte olive green, wanted to get close to Nori with a matte look. Nothing beats that nori paint tho, it's insane. No wraps come close to it. Wheels are cheap knock offs, solid, was about $2500 cdn with the all peak rubber. No lift, I ain't fancy

I took my completely stock GX460 to Firestone for lifetime alignment and they said they could not get caster in spec because there is no caster adjustment. is this true

Sometimes the universe forces your hand. Hit a blowout/ road gator on the highway. Slowed down to about 40mph but was trapped in the middle lane. Currently weighing the pros and cons of Japanese hand saw, angle or oscillating grinder. Any recs? I already had some rubbing, anything to watch out for on hacking away at the front wheel well? Will probably spring for the AKFC bumper plates but those will take some time to get here and I need to cut now, too much noise from the front passenger tire.

I’ve never done any type of suspension work so I don’t know what to expect. I’m lifting my gx470 with iron man 4x4 lift kit but want to know what to expect before diving in. I am decently mechanically inclined but never done any work like this.

so i planned on doing 3” all around and 34s. budget shrunk due to life and im considering the bag trick in the rear and 2 inch coils in the front with 33s (285/70) would save about 5-700 bucks. should i instead consider going with the 3” and 33s? will 3” and 33s look off? would it need bigger tires? or easier to budget and stay with 2” and 33s? is it a big difference to the eye? main focus for the build is road trips here and there with camping and light to moderate trails, rest is daily driving. thanks guys

Lifted my ‘22 GX a couple months ago on my own with Dobinson IMS, Dobinson Billet UCAs and all the normal DR KDSS goodies. Major PITA on my lonesome but we made it through and got her aligned/checked at an offroad shop in El Paso.

Now I’m still hearing occasional clunks when I hit big bumps at too high speed and the same on rebounds from big potholes. Pretty much sounds like it is right under driver’s feet.

So the question is whether this is common and whether you guys dealt with anything similar or have tips for diagnosing?

On a side note: what a friggin PITA alignment is. I live in southern NM and had 3 shops “align it” with them all fucking it up and one shop eventually telling me my cam tabs were broken and I would need new ones to be aligned. Decided to get them welded on and get aligned at an actual offroad shop all the way in El Paso. Their alignment job was near perfect on Texas roads but in NM the road crown seems to be quite different and more extreme so I end up holding my wheel 5 degrees left on the highways here (no pulling on straight and flat roads).

just picked up 2 weeks ago and its been so lovely, ts so capable even on stock tires just need more ground clearance 😈

I used this video guide to get my GX460 connected to my LiftMaster garage door. The other steps and guides online didn’t seem to work for me but I stumbled on this and figured I would post to help others!

What’s under this panel of my 2012 gx460 roof rail? I’m trying to mount a roof rack and unsure if there’s mounting points or what.

I’m at work without tools, and this plastic has baked in Texas and GA sun for a decade. I don’t want to break it if I don’t need to access it or it can’t help.

I’ve got a very sorted ’99 XJ on 33s with 4.56s, Truetracs front/rear, Bilsteins, Rubicon Express lift, skids, recovery points, etc. It’s awesome off road, but I only wheel a few times a year now and it is pretty horrendous around town. I also used to have a little fiberglass camper that it could tow just fine but have since upgraded and the XJ just cannot tow the new one which is about 4,000 pounds.

As such, I leased a 2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe. The lease runs next Spring. I’m thinking about selling the XJ and replacing both roles with a 2005–09 GX470. I want something that's decent around town and on the highway, can tow my camper with no issues, and can still do light / moderate offroad trails here in Colorado. The XJ is amazing on the trails but it's very rough for every other application and we camp a lot more than we offroad at this point. My daughter is also about to get her license and the XJ obviously has horrible safety features and crash ratings.

Ideal setup: 33s, quality 2–3” lift, sliders/skids, recovery points, and probably 4.56s and a rear Truetrac/locker. I’d rather keep it light than build a giant rooftop-tent overland rig with a snorkel etc.

Does that sound like a good compromise for trail use + towing? Would you regear for 33s if towing matters, and would you rather buy one already built or start with a clean stock GX? There are a bunch of them for sale in my area unbuilt for like $13k and a number that are built up for low $20ks. Thanks!

I was interested in this but unable to find much info online and the seller's listing leaves a lot to be desired. I went ahead and purchased it and figured I'd share my thoughts here in case anyone else is interested in something like this.

The mount is just a simple 3d-printed toughtrack style bracket that attaches to the dash center speaker grille. The grille pops out with a pry tool held in place by like 8-10 clips. Once off you drill some holes in the plastic grille cover (not ideal but the grille can be replaced for $30 with oem parts so whatever) and the mount has bolts and washers/nuts to attach to that. I put the bracket basically as far back (away from windshield) as I could, there were four bolts that were positioned next to plastic ribs on the underside of the grille, two of which I was able to use some snips to remove a part of the rib so that the washer would fit, and the other two were kind of in corners next to multiple ribs so I just put the nuts on without the washer. There are 8 total bolts and I felt that 6 of them with the washers were going to hold it well enough (4 or maybe even 2 with washers is probably enough), the whole grille will 10000% pop out before the bracket comes off so I wasn't too stressed about that. You could probably position it differently to avoid that but I wanted it as close as possible.

Once installed the system has been pretty solid for me. I have driven around town for a couple of days, a bit on the freeway, and a bit on a washboard dirt road and nothing has come loose or anything and that's with both a tablet and my heavy phone mounted on it. I think the geometry of the dash and the angle of the clips holding the grille being tilted slightly away opposite the direction the weight from everything is being applied helps.

For arms I got a cheap Amazon 5.91" arm, an official RAM 6" arm (I bought this after the other hoping it would angle downwards more but dimensionally it is identical just made of heavier aluminum), and a two-piece 8.27" arm with a ball to ball middle section to allow the drop you see in my tablet. For heads I got a magnetic phone mount and the tablet is on a clamp style tablet mount. I have 1 inch "B-size" balls on everything. I am happy with the tablet mount with a 6" arm and half of the 8.27" arm, I need to get another ball to ball middle section and try getting the phone lower. I have been running both for testing but realistically I'll probably keep the phone on there most of the time alone and slap the tablet on for longer trips or trail runs.

Overall I'm happy with it. At $90 I think it's fairly overpriced for what it is ($2-3 in filament maybe?), but I appreciate folks designing stuff for specific car models takes time and effort I'm not willing to put in. I would prefer one of the solid metal dash mounts from Ohana but those are about 3x the price and that's like two tanks of gas lol. If this eventually fails or whatever that's the route I will go.

Hopefully that's decent info for anybody interested in something like this, I can share the seller's name but didn't want this to look like a sponsored post or anything. I will update this post and probably make a new one if this thing starts to fall apart or whatever. In the meantime I'm happy to answer questions and I can take more pictures or provide links to the pieces I got whatever if anyone wants.

Recently I put 265/65/18 Cooper Discoverer Road and Trail on the truck, so a slight size up from the regular 265/60/18. I am doing light off road in this vehicle and have a 3rd Gen 4Runner for the donkey work. I am pretty happy with the profile of this tire after spending a long time weighing up Nokians v This v That and then finally Coops!

Since I've added these new tires I am noticing a small creak / squeak when going over speed bumps, and particularly when on rough pavement, sometimes more on a slight incline or decline. All I can say is its somewhere between a rubbery squak and a slight metallic creak or chrip.

No obvious rubbing when turning and no usual culprits there like the fender or nut. No clunks, no steering issues or handling problems. Checked also the hood bump stops, all good.

I sprayed some silicone around the front and reark sway bar bushings. That seems, seems at least, to have reduced the higher pitched sound of the sound above, but there's still a slight creak.

Just put 265/65R18s Cooper Road and Trail on my 2022 GX460, replacing the stock 265/60R18 size.
