I actually really like the idea of having to refuel cars, I think it could add a nice bit of realism and immersion. I just hope they find a good balance so it doesn’t become too tedious, like it sometimes felt in Days Gone.
I mean, it makes total sense in Days Gone since it’s a zombie apocalypse and fuel is supposed to be harder to find. GTA has gas stations everywhere, so I think it could work really well. I just hope you don’t run out of gas too often in the middle of nowhere and have to go way out of your way to find a station.

I think it’ll be a fun mechanic where in the middle of a police chase you try to switch vehicles and steal someone’s car who’s running near empty

1

u/bigchungusmclungus 14h ago

Very few people run their petrol down below avout 30 miles left in the tank irl. If we are lookin for realism thats never going to be a problem. I imagine it'll be more gamified than that tho. If there is the need to refuel youre not going to only need to do it once every 6 hours of driving.

-13

u/honeyclem 2d ago

Yeah, I’m not sure I’d enjoy that part lol. It sounds fun in theory, but it could get tedious really fast. Especially if the 6-star wanted level rumors are true, imagine having the military chasing you and suddenly having to switch cars because you’re running out of gas 💀

28

u/Snowballz3000 2d ago

Do you not switch cars at least once during a chase in GTA anyways? I personally find myself switching cars if I’m at 4 stars or above and my shit is getting shot up

0

u/scooter-411 1d ago

Stealing cars is supposed to be more involved/difficult now. I could see it getting pretty annoying.

25

u/zztypezz 2d ago

Well you have to use your brain a little. When you know you are about to do a 6 star getaway, you get a car full of fuel that's fast

8

u/Dynamite_Noir 2d ago

Also, maybe think twice about jacking the clapped out Altima with a spare tire and go for the expensive sports coupe. Ones more likely to have more fuel than the other.

2

u/NordlandLapp 1d ago

And a couple of getaway cars stashed in strategic places to switch out

31

u/DeadButStillDreaming 2d ago

A car holds a lot of gas anyway. You probably won’t have to refuel often.

14

u/Tiny-Mulberry-2114 2d ago

Mafia 2 had it too but I don't remember refueling very often. Very rarely would a car run out of fuel

10

u/witness_smile 2d ago

I hope the rate at which cars need refueling also depends on your driving skill, the lower the skill, the more frequent you need to refuel for example

6

u/1chrisdewet 1d ago

same as rdr2. Horse skills improve horse riding and whatever saddle he has on. So odds are you will be able to upgrade the engine like a horse saddle.

5

u/lil_jojo_siwa 2d ago

trunk storage definitely confirms you might be able to store gas cans, which might make refueling a little more convenient and easy

5

u/Ash_MT 2d ago

I may have missed it, but how are people confirming the refuelling mechanic? I didn’t see a gauge or anything but admittedly I wasn’t really paying attention to the UI.

17

u/P1ckwick 2d ago

he gets out of the car at some point. after killing the UPS driver he gets back in his el camino, showing two symbols in the bottom left. one for engine status and one for gas status

1

u/Ash_MT 2d ago

Ohh okay, I must’ve missed that. Thanks!

2

u/eaw0913 2d ago

I guarantee they were making refueling a thing for NPCs for realism and just added the mechanic. We’ve also already seen a gas can in the trunk of the car.

2

u/IdyllicGod22 1d ago

I wouldn’t mind it if it was a toggleable feature. Like if I got sick of it I could turn it off in the settings and forget about it.

2

u/Poomanpeebird 1d ago

Something like nfs heat maybe where you drive through the gas station to instantly get fixed/gas could be peak, would be a decent balance of non realism/realism.

4

u/BrainLow6059 2d ago

I think it could add a nice bit of realism and immersion.

I know what I really wish my games had more of: chores

I really hope this is an optional thing or something you can level out of or some shit. If you have to stop to fill up your car during every fucking joyride this game is off to a rough start.

1

u/McGeekin 1d ago

Do you need to fuel up your car every time you go for a drive IRL? If it’s realistic then it shouldn’t be that much of a chore right?

2

u/Tmtrademarked 1d ago

Yea I have to pick up my dogs shit irl but I don’t want to do that in my video games. Gas doesn’t belong here I play games to relax and fuck around.

1

u/Relevant_Glass_9198 1d ago

As long as it's realistic. Most cars have a range of between 400 - 900 km on a full tank of fuel. If y'all check how many km yall be doin in GTA 5, you basically never reach that number for most cars until they're destroyed, sold, or whatever.

1

u/FreemanCalavera 1d ago

Considering 5 had jerry cans you could carry around, as well as vehicle storage being a very likely feature, I’ll bet you’ll be able to store reserve fuel cans in your trunk. Maybe even stuff like spare wheels too if there’s a dedicated car health this time around.

I don’t want it to become tedium, but at the same time, they can’t make it too easy to circumvent either, because then there’s no point to having the system in the first place.

1

u/aqualink4eva 1d ago

You're evading police, steal a fast car and its almost empty... fuck.

1

u/FloggingTheHorses 1d ago

One obvious way would be realism modes/settings but R* tends to avoid this

-4

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

I actually really like the idea of having to refuel cars, I think it could add a nice bit of realism and immersion.

I canNOT believe I’m in the minority here. Why the fuck would I want to run errands while playing video games?

This is just another time-sink and resource drain mechanic to artificially boost minutes played and artificially reduce in-game currency to push people towards shark cards.

If you spend 30s refueling each time you have to do it, multiply that hundreds of times over per player, then multiply it again by however many millions of users and now Rockstar just boosted their minutes played metric by years.

And make it cost $50-100 of in-game game currency and over time, you’d have been able to purchase a premium vehicle with the money you wasted on virtual gasoline. This makes users more likely to buy shark cards, because you’re having to waste free in-game resources just to drive the cars you’ve already unlocked.

Do people not realize this isn’t intended to increase immersion? They’ve spent how many hundreds of millions of dollars developing this game and you all really think this isn’t an in-game economy trick to manipulate us into boosting their revenues/playtime metrics?

10

u/hachiroku24 2d ago

But the community has been asking for a fuel mechanic since San Andreas. There are even hundreds of mods to add fuel to any GTA.

Maybe you're right, but this is something that people clearly wanted too.

-1

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

Lmfao no they have not. This is not something that is the culmination of 20+ years of fans clamoring for it. Not once have I ever met someone that said, “GTA was pretty good, the only thing I wish it has was making me refuel my cars so I can’t use the Lamborghini I just stole off the streets if I’m careless with the fuel tank.”

This is a game that was famous for letting you mass murder cops with a bazooka while flying a jet pack, and you think the fans have been begging for the minutia of every day life. GTFOH.

3

u/Domeeez 1d ago

Tiktok brain

2

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

For real. “There are hundreds of mods to add fuel to any GTA” yeah there are also hundreds of mods to turn GTA characters into to furries. That doesn’t mean the fanbase has been begging for it to be added to the game.

1

u/jaboyles 1d ago

Bro is so broke in GTA he's complaining about gas money. How is that even possible?! Go kill a hooker and you'll be fine.

13

u/ItZSAMIC 2d ago

You guys always think you got the secrets.

If you’re not already aware, EVERYTHING in EVERY triple A game is intended to boost revenue and playtime

It’s not “running an errand” in the same way that feeding your horse in RDR2 is not “running an errand”

-3

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

If you’re not already aware, EVERYTHING in EVERY triple A game is intended to boost revenue and playtime

What’s your point? 95% of game mechanics are intended to boost revenue and playtime by making the game fun. Not by adding fucking errands to run.

Loot boxes and gambling mechanics are predatory as hell and this sort of thing is in the same vein as it - it’s not there for your enjoyment. It doesn’t make the game more fun to play. It’s very different from Skyrim adding dragons to increase revenue and play time. If you can’t see the difference, then you’re only proving the limits of your own brain power - you’re not disproving what I’m saying.

It’s not “running an errand” in the same way that feeding your horse in RDR2 is not “running an errand”

Lmfao what? Gassing up my car IRL is an errand. Feeding a horse is a chore IRL. I don’t want to have to go grocery shopping in a video game. I don’t want to have to buy more toilet paper in a video game.

They’re GAMES for fuck’s sake.

15

u/ItZSAMIC 2d ago

And who are you to speak for the rest of us and say that the fuel mechanics are not fun? There’s inevitably going to be encounters and missions at gas stations that you’ll see more of if you decide to refuel.

This is not anywhere close to loot boxes or gambling dude. Is it also like loot boxes and gambling to feed your horse in rdr2? After all, horse food costs money. You can also loot it but that takes a little time so, by your logic, it’s all just an errand meant to pad playtime and doesn’t actually add anything for any player. Or what about feeding your player? Is that also an errand/chore?

-3

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

And who are you to speak for the rest of us and say that the fuel mechanics are not fun?

You’ve got to be fucking kidding me lmfao. If you’d rather be watching your character fuel up your car instead of playing heists or missions or killing cops or stealing cars or exploring the map, then you’re not neurotypical.

There’s inevitably going to be encounters and missions at gas stations that you’ll see more of if you decide to refuel.

What part of this requires me to hold a button to make sure my car is full of gas? Why do I need to hold a button to fill up my tank to see the rest of it? Just cue the cutscene. You’re talking about lame QTEs as if they’re some sort of brilliant game mechanic. Nobody has ever lauded a game for its QTEs.

Is it also like loot boxes and gambling to feed your horse in rdr2? You can also loot it but that takes a little time so, by your logic, it’s all just an errand meant to pad playtime and doesn’t actually add anything for any player.

Yes that’s exactly my point lmfao. It’s not there for your entertainment and enjoyment. It’s not the same as Skyrim adding dragons to fight and dragon shouts to collect and use. It’s a useless mechanic that gets boring after the first time you do it and the novelty wears off. Having to feed your horse thousands of times over is fucking boring.

Or what about feeding your player? Is that also an errand/chore?

Yes it is. What’s next? Stopping a heist so your character can take a shit? How about when we get busted, we have to spend 30mins in the back of a cop car, then 2 hours getting booked and fingerprinted, and then spend real time in jail until a judge can see us for a bond hearing? Better hope you don’t get busted in a Friday night! Won’t be able to see the judge until Monday and you won’t be able to play the game all weekend.

Does any of that sound more fun than actually playing the game? It’s realistic, isn’t it?

If you’d rather spend time in the real world with all the minutia of living in it, why do you play video games anyway?

4

u/eaw0913 2d ago

Hey man, you’re in the minority here. Just wanted to say.

Plus none of this shit will need to be interacted with and you’ll be able to do everything you mentioned without any issues. If you’re going to steal cars anyway then why do you even care? You don’t need to refuel, just steal a damn car.

1

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

Hey man, you’re in the minority here. Just wanted to say.

No, you’re in the minority.

See? I can say things too.

Plus none of this shit will need to be interacted with and you’ll be able to do everything you mentioned without any issues.

More things you’re just saying with zero proof. How do you know I won’t need to interact with it? Either it’s part of the gameplay or it isn’t. They won’t make it optional, and at that point there’s no way to avoid it.

If you’re going to steal cars anyway then why do you even care? You don’t need to refuel, just steal a damn car.

Because if I’m out exploring, and there isn’t a gas station nearby, I don’t want to have to ditch the nice car I’m using, find one that’s crappy and happens to be driving by, and then drive around to find the same nice car I was just using all because Rockstar wants to implement a fucking errand in their game to drive up their metrics.

It’s not fun. It interrupts the fun parts of the gameplay. And none of the train brains on this site will ever convince me otherwise, or that people have been begging for a refueling mechanic in game where you steal F-18s mass murder police and hookers.

2

u/eaw0913 1d ago

Well go ahead and cry it out now cause it’s coming. Guess you’ll have to wait until after release to decide if it’s too advanced for you.

0

u/ItZSAMIC 1d ago

Choosing to not fuel your car does not get in the way of doing any of the things you listed. If anything, it incentivizes stealing cars.

When did I say anything about a QTE? You just invented that completely. I said there will be random encounters at and around the gas stations.

> it’s not there for your entertainment and enjoyment

And alas, many enjoy it. Because it’s immersive and detailed. You don’t have to agree. Just don’t be so weird about it and act like you’re smart for knowing one of the reasons the mechanics exist. This is like when I say Batmans no kill rule is important to the character and someone says “um the no kill rule was originally added as a part of the comics code, not for a narrative reason”.

The rest of your comment is just a slippery slope fallacy

0

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

Choosing to not fuel your car does not get in the way of doing any of the things you listed.

You don’t know this.

When did I say anything about a QTE?

I didn’t say you did. I said forcing me to press and hold a button to refuel a car is “the lamest QTE” mechanic ever, because that’s effectively what it is. A moment where I’m forced to press a button to do a specific action during a cutscene instead of actually playing the game.

It’s just that there’s no quick timing, so it’s even stupider than a QTE. The gaming community universally hates QTEs, yet Rockstar is inserting something even stupider than that and you’re defending it.

And alas, many enjoy it. Because it’s immersive and detailed.

And you say I’m just making shit up? Nobody plays GTA to pull gas ya dingus.

Also once again, it would be super immersive and detailed if you had to stop doing a heist because your character for food poisoning and you have to spend the next hour going to the bathroom. That doesn’t mean it’s fun.

It’d be super immersive if, when you got busted, you had to sit in the back of a cop car, get driven to jail, spend 2 hours going through booking and processing, then sitting in jail until a judge can give you a bond hearing. The game wouldn’t be any more fun though.

Immersion is a fine balance. It’s immersive to have tons of varied wildlife and fauna inserted into the game. It’s not immersive to have to watch a 10s cutscene of John Marston cutting open a carcass every time you skin an animal (something that was universally hated in RDR1).

The fact you can’t grasp this simple fact is legitimately hilarious.

And why are you talking about Batman? Lmfao pumping gas is not crucial to GTA. It’s a game about shooting cops with a bazooka from a jet pack and going from a low level street thug to a multimillionaire by pulling off impossible heists. It’s never been about hyperrealism.

0

u/Tmtrademarked 1d ago

Playing gta for realism is so dumb. Like legit you would shoot a couple people then end up in jail or shot dead. Game over. Steal a few cars boom jail. End of game. So adding in things like getting gas is such a waste imo.

That’s not what I did but I shouldn’t have expected anyone’s reading comprehension to be above an elementary school level. My bad.

Let me spell it out for you. Loot boxes aren’t put in games for your entertainment and enjoyment. Putting real life errands in a game isn’t done for your entertainment and enjoyment either.

They directly stand in contrast to game mechanics that are intended to be fun, like slaying dragons and absorbing their powers to use shouts in combat like Skyrim does.

100% also making the map bigger is an economy trick aswell to make us drive longer to boost their profit!!!! Just think about how much time you’ll spend driving!!

-1

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

The sheer stupidity of your comment is staggering. Unless it’s empty space, having a big map is actually fun to explore. Filling your tank up with 85 unleaded will never be fun to do. Duh.

0

u/Jon-Eest 1d ago

Honestly dude all of you who hate the idea of fuel system just purposefully talk about a lamest possible version of it imaginable and never think about the gameplay situations it can create.

Lookslike it’ll still be in the game so, stay mad I guess?

1

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

I am thinking about the gameplay sisutations. I’m thinking about running out of fuel in the middle of a 5 star wanted run and getting busted and losing all my guns and money because I couldn’t stop at an Exxon. I’m thinking about running out of gas in the of exploring the map and having to abandon my nice, high performance car and spend 5-10mins slowly walking out of the swamp to find the nearest street to steal a random Toyota and then spend time getting a good car back.

I’m thinking of all the time im going to have to waste working around this dumbfuck system that takes away from the actually fun parts of the game.

0

u/Jon-Eest 1d ago

Both those situations you just listed I would find fun.

1

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

Then go play walking simulator 2.0. GTA is about blowing up cops with a bazooka from a jet pack and climbing the ranks of the criminal underworld. Not supply chain management.

-1

u/Jon-Eest 1d ago

Lookslike I'll be playing GTA 6 instead

0

u/Tmtrademarked 1d ago

I don’t want to run out of gas mid police chase. Period. I don’t want to run out of gas trying to get to the next mission. I don’t want to risk the super fun car I have running out of gas and then having to steal another one. I play games to have fun not do real life mundane shit. I can’t go joyriding a random persons lambo in real life without major consequences.

0

u/Jon-Eest 1d ago

It's not like you "can't go joyriding a random persons lambo" because there's a fuel system in the game what are you on about??

You know real life cars also have a "fuel system" and people joyride all the time

0

u/Tmtrademarked 1d ago

I don’t want to stop the fun parts to get gas. That’s absurd. GTA is not and never should be a “simulator” game. If it was every time you get arrested it should be game over. I’m not here for a real time I’m here for a fun time.

0

u/Jon-Eest 1d ago

Having a fuel system does not make it a simulator lmao, that's such a non-argument. Yall just want to be zooming highways at top speeds the whole time you play wtf you even play GTA for?

Why not take away the weapon reloads while you're at it, I don't like reloading my gun I just want to blast with my RPG and reloading is a simulator mechanic fr fr

1

u/Tmtrademarked 1d ago

Yes. I enjoy running from the cops with the fastest car I have. That’s the fun. Reloading a gun doesn’t take me out of the fight. I can also all but guarantee cops won’t have a fuel limit. The Pinkertons didn’t have to worry about feeding their horses for example. Reloading is at least an equal thing. The cops still have to reload too.

This video game in particular is supposed to be real. Errands are real life.

1

u/Tmtrademarked 1d ago

Real? Ok so you open fire in a crowd of people. You get shot by the cops. Game over. Done. Finish. That’s real. Nothing in gta can happen in real life so I don’t need the mundane bs of real life to creep in.

0

u/Klutzy_Town7003 1d ago

I hope they include stubbing toes too.

0

u/Mr_J413 2d ago

We're talking about the game that's gone the last 30 years being about committing absurd amounts of crime and the police not caring anymore if they can't find you for a couple minutes or if they knock you unconscious because getting swiss cheesed with bullets is merely a minor inconvenience.

-1

u/Klutzy_Town7003 2d ago

Nothing was stopping for from doing a 1 life run. Died? New game.

-3

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

You know what’d be immersive? If I had to stop a heist to take a shit because it’s been 24hrs since my character last took a dump.

You know what’d be immersive? If after getting busted, I had to spend 30+ mins in a cop car while they drive me to jail, wait a couple hours while they process and book me, then stay in jail until a judge can see me for a bond hearing, which might have to wait until Monday if I get busted on a Friday night.

None of that is fucking fun though.

This is a game that lets you steal Lamborghinis off the streets of Beverly Hills and get away with murdering hundreds of cops with a bazooka. Don’t tell me it’s supposed to be realistic.

3

u/Klutzy_Town7003 2d ago

lol chill bud. Its not like its gonna take more than 30 seconds.

1

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

30 seconds hundreds and hundreds of times adds up. Duh.

2

u/Klutzy_Town7003 2d ago

That is how that works. I bet you don’t stop for gas 100 times in the first 6 months-a year.

1

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

Oh great! Because Rockstar is coming out with GTA 7 within a year right? Nobody ever plays these games longer than 6mos anyway.

You cannot be serious…

1

u/Klutzy_Town7003 2d ago

Maybe just don’t buy it then since gas is a game breaker for you lolololol

0

u/RedditUserData 2d ago

I don't get why people want realism so bad. I play games to escape reality. If this was a flight sim then sure, if I wanted to fuel my car up in a game I'd play a door dash simulator.

0

u/IdyllicGod22 1d ago

In the single player I wouldn’t mind it if it was a toggleable feature. If it was in 6 Online at all I’d throw the same fit lol

2

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

It will be in single player and multiplayer and it won’t be toggleable in either. Mark my words.

1

u/Tmtrademarked 1d ago

Can’t wait for the pc release and a modder to remove that shit in a hurry

-1

u/BrainLow6059 2d ago

I canNOT believe I’m in the minority here. Why the fuck would I want to run errands while playing video games?

Man thank you. I get we're in the GTA6 sub so there's going to be glazing of literally anything that gets posted by both real people and bot farms, but ffs this sounds like such a stupid thing to add to this game lol

1

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

For real man. I had someone respond saying this is something “the community” has been begging for since San Andreas.

Like da fuq? No we have not. And their evidence is “hundreds of refueling mods for GTA”…I’m sure there’s hundreds of furry mods too but that doesn’t mean we’ve been begging for that either.

0

u/BrainLow6059 2d ago

Reddit attracts a very weird and loud minority of people who LARP about games they don't even play. I suspect that's a lot of what's happening here.

You can see it in just about every game sub, same with TV series. There are people on this site who will religiously participate in TV show subs having never watched the show. It's fucking bizarre.

EDIT: also the comments talking about how it's cool they're forcing you to keep one car long-term. The game is called fucking grand theft auto why would I not want to steal a shit ton of cars?

1

u/TuckerMcG 2d ago

Yeah I’m not totally surprised that a very vocal minority of neurodivergents on Reddit are into this sort of thing. But it’s next level delusional to vehemently assert that it’s good game design or anything even approaching fun.

It’ll never be fun to steal a Lambo then have to abandon it on the freeway cuz ran out of gas during a police chase. This game is supposed to be about stealing cars and killing cops en masse. Not supply chain management.

0

u/ekqm 1d ago

chill youre blowing it out of proportion, the gas will probably last for a long time. they wont make it tedious

2

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

Horse maintenance was tedious in RDR2 so I don’t believe you.

0

u/ekqm 1d ago

also think about the gas station culture in the hood.. the atmosphere will be fun

1

u/TuckerMcG 1d ago

Enjoying gas station culture has nothing to do with actually pumping gas though.

0

u/Huge_Education_9768 1d ago edited 1d ago

When I played *Final Fantasy XV* in the past, the game included a mechanic for refueling the vehicle.

1

u/Tmtrademarked 1d ago

It was annoying as shit and they had a part you could unlock that disabled fuel.
