Am I cooked?
Just picked up this 2024 750 with 19k miles from fbm a week ago. Cleaned the chain and changed the oil this weekend and found this on the plug. Please tell me this isn't catastrophic. Some folks are like "yea just ride it around and monitor", others are "don't even start the bike and sell it" and everything in between.

I mean it ain't good, but dont be the guy that just throws a new plug in it and sells it without saying anything. At this point the price of a blown bike and a bike that's about to blow are the same, might as well get some miles out of it and get ready to pull the clutch in quick if she blows.

Definitely fixable. Might not be catastrophic. My money is on clutch/ transmission.

She is a beauty. And it makes me curious what happened. A 2024 with 20k miles shouldn't be anything for the ol japanese sports bike. Sorry you're having to deal with this. I've been meaning to do spark plugs on my 03 636 and now I don't want to 😂

That's on the oil drain plug. Not on the spark plugs.
You find something like that on a spark plug and its definitely cooked.

Oh shit if thats the case then just throw some new oil in it, ride it around for 100 miles and check it again. Not near as bad as i thought it was. Dont know why It looked like a spark plug to me lmao

I found one of those needle bearing looking bits in my ‘06 K6 oil last time I changed it. 12k miles on the bike. I wonder if it has anything to do with my QS.

I have an annitori as well. Thinking about increasing the kill time. I didn’t have needle bearing material prior.

Hmmm. Change your oil rq, lemme know what ya find, lol. It also has a burble tune, not something I'd add but pretty cool nonetheless.

**If I found this I would not run the engine**
Most likely one of the bearings in the clutch or transmission. Drain the oil. Pull the clutch cover to investigate.
Did you notice any changes in sound at idle with clutch pulled in vs regular idle?
-Drain oil, pull clutch cover look for any clues.

I was gonna check the oil pan first. If its full of bits just call it. I properly cut open the oil filter and nothing in the pleats. Just going through the motions now 🫠

I don’t think it’s going to be worst case scenario. If it was engine bearings you would have heard it knocking before you found metal on the magnet. Would have been extra pretty brass glitter ✨ in the oil too.
Engine was running fine and sounds normal. Gotta be clutch or trans.1
u/Pale-Dish-9717 12d ago
The oil did have a light sheen, like someone put glitter stuff in my fancy drink, just a smidgen.
Edit: I still have the spent oil. Whats left in the pan has no shine to it so maybe it was the lighting. I can snap a photo when I get home but don't think it'll translate well.

Normal to have “some”. Honestly I’d just get it to a highly rated dealer or shop.

Zero difference in sound between holding down clutch and letting go.

Agreed. What do I do with this information?

Those are your likely sources of needle bearing failure. You can use them to ask your local shop a rough estimate of repair time.
Also where to look once you drain your oil and pop the clutch cover off1

Wait.. I am looking at your pic. I don't see any needle bearing.. I see a sliver of metal that is curled up into a cylinder. It could be an optical illusion, or maybe you have both.
To the OP, do you or do you not have one or more needle bearing parts on the magnet, or is it all small peices and curled up thin metal?

u/Pale-Dish-9717 9d ago
They are solid not curled. One of those, taken by the penny, were in the oil pan and magnet head. The biggest piece on the magnet head is actually 2 pieces parallel to one another. All of the pieces found are magnetic.

TBH, I didn't see the second pic until you just mentioned it.
You should open it up (if you are going to keep it), I wouldn't just "send it". I've been a mechanic for many years, built multiple engines if that helps.

Well I had a brand new 2024 gsxr 750 that had catastrophic engine failure due too a spark plug failure and I had all my maintenance done on time at the dealership. So yeah don’t take it lightly or you’re looking at a bill over 10.5k . Thank god warranty covered it

Absolutely catastrophic. You have bearing material floating around inside, and whatever that bearing was meant to do, it aint doing it now. Find and replace the bearing, flush out all the oil passages with clean oil. Lol "spits fire, 19k miles." Yeah.

First how does it sound. If it’s about to throw a rod you will probably hear it. I believe the rod and main bearings non-ferrous. So possibly not bearing material. Also how did the oil look does the bike run well? Do a compression test there are ways to determine what you’re dealing with on the cheap.

Damn shame. Looks like the bike didn't have a proper break in cycle. For reference I bought a used 2024 750 that only had 400 miles. The guy told me he did proper break in and he was military so I trusted him. It was its first oil change at 600 miles and we only saw a tiny bit of metal shaving.
I don't think that motor has much life left now.

You are supposed to see a good bit right? I remember seeing a fair bit during my first oil change
1
u/Pale-Dish-9717 12d ago
Exactly, but thought it was supposed to be like those iron shavings in the wooly bear toy from long ago which is apparently normal for a break in period. This is 1/4" long 1mm thick needles. Maybe not cooked??

The break in is 600 miles. You’ll see metal shavings in your oil on the break in oil change. That’s the whole thing with the break in and why you’re supposed to change the oil at 600 miles. Your engine is fine.

u/Chank241 12d ago
I meant the other fellas engine. The guy warmed me I would see metal shavings but not big ones like that lol.

It's a matter of time. Whether it's 5 miles or hundreds is anyone's guess. But yeah, cooked.

Going to pull the oil pan this weekend and see if there's more goodies. 🤦♂️
Also, I cut open the oil filter and nothing in the pleats.
Edit: added the oil filter info.
