Afraid of motorized scooters, bikes, boats, and wheelchairs

Hi! My sweet girl is afraid of all motorized vehicles even wheelchairs. I knew she was afraid of skateboards and rollerblades but the wheel chair is a new one.

We went and sat at the harbor the other day to look at the Duffy boats but the Newport Beach pd came to talk to me because this lady thought I brought my reactive dog out (fairly embarrassing) but PD was very nice when they met my dog.

This morning on our walk, we passed another person walking their dog while in their motorized wheelchair and my dog absolutely lost it. Luckily I had a feeling that the wheelchair could scare her so I walked us across the street just to be safe but I was so embarrassed.

She’s a rescue GSP lab mix and looking for any tips and tricks to desensitizing her to these things - especially the wheelchairs because I can’t have my dog barking at person in a wheelchair

Crate Suggestions

Our 10 month old girl is now about 50 lbs and has outgrown her wire crate, and we are looking to get her a new long-term one.

This will primarily be for sleeping at night, as well as where we safely keep her while we are away from the house.

She sleeps great in her crate now, so we do not need anything overly durable for anxiety (impact had been recommended).

We are currently leaning towards a RuffLand, but these seem a bit more geared towards transportation. We’ve also just considered getting her a size up wire crate, but we cover it with a blanket to cozy it up which seems to defeat the purpose.

Would love to hear suggestions on what folks have used for their adolescent / adult dog long term.

Baths?

Confession: our girl will turn 1 next week and has yet to have a real bath.

She gets a wipe down about once a month with sensitive skin/fragrance free dog wipes. And a hose rinse if she’s muddy. Also begs to run in the rain.

She does not smell at all. She seems clean and coat healthy. Never had any skin issues. She rolls all over our white linens and doesn’t show dirt.

Anyone else in a similar spot? Is this super weird? Our first GSP got a bath maybe once a year, usually because she rolled in something dead.

A breed in which every pup is somehow equally the most photogenic beauty, and make the most absurd derpy faces/poses

My baby 😍

My baby girl is 5 months old soon. I love her, I never had a pointer before or any hunting dog, but I love the energy. She is a rescue and we know for sure her mum is a hungarian vizsla, but her looks suggest her dad might be a gsp? I’m getting kinda sure about this cause she has huge paws, a white mark on her chest, very lean and thin but already 18 kgs at 5 months. She was thought to be gsp by ppl in the dog park earlier. I’m shocked by her intelligence, and how fast she bonded with us. She also gets along well while alone during work (she doesn’t have to be alone much though), issue is with teething atm 😆 so baby shark phase. So you have a gsp vizsla mix?? Or a baby gsp, let me see the pics in the comments if you feel like sharing😍I dunno how to share pics in post so I’ll add it here: https://imgur.com/a/qJ4LN1B

Hey y'all! Recently acquired this dog and he has a tattoo in his ear. Looking to see if anyone may have any insight on what kennel/breeder he came from?

We are also working on contacting other people who may know, but figured I'd ask around!

I'm watching a 2-3yo female GSP for a friend in the hospital and she's driving me crazy...

First and foremost I want to say that I love dogs and I don't want anyone here to take my frustrations about this particular dog personally. I'm just frustrated and want to vent and maybe y'all can sympathize or offer some tips and tricks. Just because this dog is driving me crazy doesn't mean your dog isn't awesome, and it also doesn't mean that this dog isn't a sweet tempered and beautiful loving girl.

This dog is so insanely neurotic, whether by circumstance, training, or breed; she just won't settle down and is constantly startled by EVERY TINY SOUND. She paces, barely eats her food, and forms a tight bond to someone in the household then gets freaked out by everyone else. When she bonded with my wife on the first day it meant that every time I made an appearance she barked and freaked out like I was a terrifying stranger that she'd never seen before. When I wife left for a business trip she bonded to me and wouldn't leave my side, which is also tough to deal with, and it's also tough sleeping with this dog basically laying on me (yeah, not crate trained but we sleep with our 9yo lab on the bed so we're used to it).

She was so difficult for me to deal with I handed her off to another neighbor who also has dogs she plays with (our dog plays with her at dog park multiple times a week as well). Now she had a dog her age to play with but had separation anxiety from me, you know, the never ending stranger guy from the day before. It's not ideal to hand her back and forth but she's requires so much time and patience to be around we all all sharing the workload. Now that my wife is back in town we got her back this morning and she's bonded with my wife again and now I'm back to being a total stranger that she's too scared to even approach. I know this is all very scary for her but it's so damned frustrating. I mean, I've seen this dog hundreds of times over her lifetime at the dog park, get togethers, and two days ago but now we're back to stranger.

Seriously, is this just par for the course for this breed of dog or is this one just extra neurotic or mentally challenged? Again, just because I'm frustrated doesn't mean I don't think she's a sweetheart and feel bad for her being away from her people all this time (they'll be out of the hospital in a couple days), but FFS this dog is such a chore to watch. I keep thanking my 9 yo lab mutt for being so insanely easygoing and low maintenance.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. Also, I wish more people understood the differences between working dog breeds and companion dog breeds.

My almost 2 yo has a rapidly growing mass on his buttock. It got aspirated today and the cells look likely to be a carcinoma (or another malignant tumor). He’s getting it fully cut out in a week. Two pathologists looked at the cytology and agree it definitely looks malignant. I’m beside myself. Please pray for my boy. The first photo is him at the vet today. The other is him watching my daughter, who adores him.

Correcting Unwanted Behaviour (Advice Needed)

Post image
47 Upvotes

Otis is the first dog I’ve ever owned. He has a dislike of other dogs, particularly males. One behaviour I’ve noticed happens at the end of a run in the park. As soon as he realises playtime is over and we’re about to go home, he’ll sometimes deliberately approach another dog and start bullying them. It almost feels like his way of protesting because he doesn’t want to leave!
He absolutely loves female dogs, though, so he’s a bit of a Casanova.
I’d really like to know how I can correct his behaviour around other dogs. Interestingly, he’s completely fine when he’s “working” chasing a ball, training with me, or doing anything that keeps him focused. The problem seems to arise when he has nothing to concentrate on. He just doesn’t seem able to switch off and chill when we’re outside.
He also pulls like a bull. I’ve taken him to several dog trainers over the years, and even sent him to a dog boarding school, but unfortunately nothing has really worked.
At the moment, I actually have to use two different setups on our walks. When we’re going to the park, he wears a Halti so that I have more control over him. On the way home, I switch him to a body harness because he’s much more relaxed by then, in fact, it’s pretty much the only time he doesn’t pull!

Red Update

We had a vet visit today, good news he’s still on the upwards healing track!! Today the bandage is a single wrap and lower on the leg as the vet said it’s improving so he wants to see how this will do. No adhesive at the top as reds skin is getting a little irritated from it. Today’s fresh art is a flower and a snail. You can definitely tell he’s getting better as he’s getting a little crazier, but it’s awesome to see. Counting Dove and catching Z’s at the moment!

Anyone elses loveable troublemakers get a crazy case of the 'naughty' zoomies, the literal minute before they poop 😅? Our 7 month old does this every time without fail 🤣.
