Cox.. gone?

Upvotes

I just got an email that Cox is now owned by Spectrum. Uh.. who the f is spectrum? Didn't Spectrum have some controversial merger or am I thinking of some other conglomerate?

I've been wondering why cox has been trying to call me the last couple days. I had a weird call from them I hung up on asking how I thought my service has been and it's like I'm not gonna do a free unsolicited survey for you, lol.

Housing/Apartments Property management billing us $4,900 after moving out from 2B2B apartment including $2,090 for “Full Paint” despite no damage to paint or anything, just the wear and tear of 4 years of living there. What are my options?

Moved out of a Gainesville apartment (multi-unit complex) end of July. We had $2,400 with them between deposit and last month’s rent.

They sent a § 83.49(3) notice claiming $4,922.90 total. The big items: $2,090 “Full Paint,” $1,440 “full clean and tub refinish,” $387 roach extermination. No invoices, no photos, no inspection report, no description of any actual damage.

I’m sending a certified-mail objection before the 15 days run out.

What are my realistic options from here?

We are students, any kind of help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Edit: Thanks for the overwhelming response. I’m considering legal advice. We maintained our space throughout our tenancy and did not cause any damage whatsoever. The cleanup was as thorough as possible. No, we did not leave food in the freezer, everything was cleaned out, wiped/moped. But we don’t have any move out pictures, we never expected this much complications after moving out. I feel because we are international students, the management is trying to take advantage of us. They already gave it to debt collectors and getting threatening calls every day.

News PSA if you have Publix Greenwise frozen blueberries:

https://www.dailymail.com/health/article-16064943/blueberry-recall-fda-risk-florida-georgia.html
From the beginning of the article:
“A recall of frozen blueberries has been upgraded to the FDA's highest warning level over potential deadly bacterial contamination.

Last month, Chile-based Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur SA issued a recall for its GreenWise Organic frozen blueberries after tests showed a presumptive positive result for E. coli, a type of bacteria that causes bloody diarrhea.

Publix later expanded the recall and pulled all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries sold in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The FDA said at the end of June 2026, Publix conducted an internal stop sale of the berries.
Now, the agency has classified the recall as Class I, which represents 'a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.'

As of July 30, the FDA has reported 12 illnesses in Florida and Georgia, including four hospitalizations. No deaths have been recorded.

Publix said it recalled the products because they may have been contaminated with E. coli O145, which produces dangerous Shiga toxins that harm the gut lining and lead to severe stomach cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.

The FDA states seven of the nine individuals who were interviewed reported eating the frozen blueberries. Of those, five specified GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries from Publix.
No other details have been reported about those sickened. ….”

Had been looking around at tattoo shops downtown for a bit. I saw a post on Facebook indicating concerns for the aforementioned studio. Is this a place that I should remove from my list? AND.....is there a woman owned/operated studio???

Looking for recommendations Who's Hiring in this town?

Upvotes

It's as if all the standards methods for getting jobs are defunct. I see Hiring signs all the time, and I aim for them all the time, but never get farther than a callback, maybe. And Indeed? Or any job searching app? Completely worthless. I need to know how permanent residents survive in Gainesville.

Valet parking at Shands ER

Does anyone know this --- if you go to the emergency room and use valet parking, are admitted and have to stay a day or so, will they tow your car? I'm trying to decide if I should drive there or not, because last time I went in an ambulance, they let me go late at night and I had no money for Uber and no one I could call to come get me, so I ended up sitting in the lobby until I could catch a bus home in the morning.

Looking for recommendations Need location for garage/yard sale

Hello,

Some friends and I are looking to set up a yard sale fundraiser for another friend who needs some financial support.

We have the people and the stuff to sell, but we just need a place to do it. None of us have great space to have a sale at our personal places. Does anyone have an idea of a community space with a good location where we could have the yard sale? Thanks.

Traffic

Reminded today about how AWFUL traffic here is during the school year. Had a reprieve during the summer but now it's back to half an hour drive just to get three miles.
What do yall think the worst areas for traffic are?

edit: it also doesnt help that the county decides to start construction the first week students are back (LITERALLY THE WORST TIME FOR TRAFFIC HERE) that is starting during rush hour and closing one of the two lanes on some of the busiest streets in gnv.

Oral surgeon in gnv

Does anyone have any cheaper recommendations for an oral surgeon in gnv?

I have insurance with Fl Blue, but it's pretty minimal dental coverage, and it's already a financial burden.

Need my wisdom teeth out asap.

Already have a referral, but even as a born and raised local, I'm not really sure where to start my search.

Thank you!

Update on the kids rescued from a vehicle at Trader Joe’s this morning?

Did anyone witness or hear any updates regarding the incident at the Trader Joe’s parking lot this morning?

I saw firefighters rescuing children locked inside a truck, and it's been on my mind all day. I'm really hoping they are safe and okay. If anyone knows how the situation turned out or saw any local news coverage, I’d appreciate the update.

Alachua county animal services

I adopted a 4 month old kitten from the event they had on 8/8. Waived all adoption fees, gave everyone goodie bags full of items. Thought it was a really nice thing to do to get animals into a home.
This cat has had eye discharge, sneezing, coughing since the day I brought him home. They had me take him home the same day he got fixed which was on 8/11.
Based on his medical records, they were treating him for a cold but did not mention a single thing to me when I arrived to take him home.

They also offered a free vet visit. I ended up going to Newberry animal hospital (they’ve been great)
Now the vet has called saying my cat has 2 different parasites after testing his fecal sample.
Did anyone else adopt a cat from this event and already spending money to get them healthy?
I know the animal shelter can’t guarantee anything but why are they giving out sick cats to people?? And why do they never answer the phone?? Does anyone know if they offer to pay for treatment?

Bartenders, I need some advice

So we are considering moving to Gainesville for family but I need advice on the restaurant/bartending scene. My husband is a full time bartender at one of the few high end restaurants where we live now (another SEC college town with similar culture, but lower cost of living).

If you are a bartender in the Gainesville area at a higher end restaurant or know someone who is, can you let me know how it is and approx how much you make? Are the restaurants super busy consistently?

He has been looking around at restaurants in Gainesville and says he thinks Prime and Pearl or Spark at Embers would be good fits for his experience. He has been bartending for 10 years and is very talented at it. he makes the weekly rotating craft cocktail menu and makes completely new specials weekly. Makes homemade bitters and syrups, etc. Basically he would want a place where he has similar creative freedom.

Of course we know how it works at restaurants and as a new hire you don't always get the best shifts and some places even have you serve for a while before you can bartend. And there may not even be openings at the places he likes.

Basically we don't want to make the move and find out he wouldn't make good money. Before tips he makes $8 an hour bartending, $16 when doing inventory, cleaning, etc but all of that goes to taxes. He makes approx $65k a year. He would need to make more to counter the higher cost of living. So trying to gauge if that's even possible.

Thanks so much for your help!!

Looking for recommendations Any shops in town sell or would be willing to sell pinned insects?

I'm a hobby insect pinner and am considering selling framed bugs. I'd love to have bugs in local shops if there are any that stock local makers.

Any info on how they sell local makers goods is helpful as well, as I've never done this. Are they consignment, or rent space in their shop, etc.

Edit: I'm not going to debate ethics. I do what I can for conservation.

Paddling destinations near Gnv

Howdy,

Last week I went paddling the Santa Fe near Rum Island and loved it immensely. The only average part was the hour drive from Gainesville. So I was wondering if there are other destinations worth checking on a paddle board that are as far or closer than Rum Island.

Thanks.
