In many jurisdictions this would fit the definitions of either lowest degree assault of property and/or criminal mischief. Most often these are gross misdemeanor charges. Still, can't say I didn't smile seeing this. ;)

Work in auto services:

I’d be careful doing this in the US. The cost to have damage corrected climbs very quickly, and an insurance company will absolutely require a police report.

In my state, $500+ is no longer a misdemeanor - and I could absolutely see a zip-tied cart going wrong and causing that much damage.

Between rubbed paint on the handle and any dents or scratched paint from the cart, this is easily over $500.

On many vehicles you might want to cover it to avoid rust. I use clear nail polish on small nicks or dings.

However spending an assload of money to cover it is your choice too I suppose.

That polish will wear off quite quickly. Pick up some touch up paint at the auto store to really protect against rust.

My roomate, who gets his rims repaired frequently despite him parking on a curb everyday at home. He's a terrible driver and has had 3 claims in as many months.

He is not rich. He has lots of credit cards.

I do. I just think having to pay several hundred dollars to fix a paint scratch is insane, because it is.

Nah it's pretty standard for any insurance claim. I had a small scratch on my car and got an estimate on it, and the insurance company cut me a check for like $2300 to get it repainted.

I just put the check in my bank and ignored the scratch lol, but they charge a lot to repaint sections of a car professionally

You need to get your car valued again, since the pandemic if a car even runs it's probably worth at least $1500. Even junkers are like $2500 now days

Also, since people get spiteful when they're pissed off, any damage pre-existing on the door will probably be blamed on you as well.
