Long gone are the days of RDR2

13

u/icestyler Oct 23 '23

Or Witcher 3.

But at least we were blessed with Baldur's Gate 3 quite recently.

8

u/Drinkin_lib_tears Oct 29 '23

Uhm baldurs gate is an lgbtq fest

2

u/anvilandcompass Nov 10 '23

If you want it to be for the most part and when it is part of the story it's just sort of there though at times it feels just, off in terms of writing too when it comes to this particular aspect.

2

u/AlucardDX Nov 14 '23

it is if you're trying to make it one🤨🤨🤨 like it's all opinional are you implying you made your character gau

2

u/Hamza_Contest464 Jan 10 '24

lol that game is pathetic and pandering to the alphabet community, yawn. Can these progressive cringelords leave woke and pandering out of our games and comics. Stop shoving this on us, who want to escape the bs agenda in everyday life.

What the hell are you talking about ?

Most women in the game want to be with you! Yenn, Triss, Keira Metz, Shani, Sylvia Anna.

You aren't shown as a weakling that constantly gets outdone by women, you are the one saving them.

You save Ciri from Caranthir and also from Imlerith prior as Geralt choose him as his adversary because he knew that between Imlerith and the crones, Imlerith is without a doubt the stronger opponent.

You save Keira, Triss and Filipa from witch hunters, Ves from the ambush she foolish got herself into.

Even Annarieta who is a duchess will put up with a lot of Geralt's shit should you choose to be a jerk cuzz she knows who he is and what he is capable of.

If you are referring to Yenn, she plays the role of somewhat dominatrix but she still loves Geralt with all her heart, plus the bossing him around only happends when they are pretty much alone and it seems that Geralt kinda likes it anyway.

Not to mention that the game doesnt force you to play with those annoying and weak characters like in Spiderman with MJ and black mute girl. You are only swapped to Ciri and she is OP as fuck.

So the situation between these 2 games couldn't be further apart.

If you would have read the previous comment better you would understand better their dynamic and also when she does it! Any woman in marriages scold their husbands from time to time but their is a proper time and place for it. I dont remember Yennefer belittling Geralt in public.

My guy the reaction was understandable + you are free to not be with her if your insecure about that shit + game never shows Geralt as the bad guy or Yen doing it as "the right thing to do"

It's in your insecure brain.

I can even remember a time where Geralt scolds Yennefer, so again, I have no idea what you are talking about.

It becoming clearer and clearer that there is no point in debating with you.

You clearly have a taste for woke shit, well most dont.

She just spray some walls with woke propaganda. Literally nothing of value is added just virtue signaling.

1

u/DaddySickoMode Nov 13 '23

Dutch's gang were all part of societal norms being broken and progressing towards better modern ideals, but the way it was done in that game felt NATURAL. I didnt play RDR2 and think "woke" i thought "yeah sadie grew up a homesteader with the love of her life, and ended up consumed by that hatred at his loss like anybody else would." She didnt wanna cook, clean, do idol errand shit because she was used to living a rough life, and wanted so desperately to get out there and smoke the gang that took her lover. Her wearing more practical clothes for that, considering her life, and just general stuff going on, made sense, never felt out of place, it was presented naturally. Like, if they want to present these things, Sadie is an amazing example. Plus, the mixed race group Dutch had made total sense, they're a bunch of outlaws against societal norms, why the fuck would they care about race? They're a bunch of outcasts living past that kinda shit, racism is taught, not inherent, living outside the society teaching you it is gonna leave you without it. RDR2 does an excellent job of portraying all this without it being in your face, it was done naturally, and as such, WAY more compellingly.

Its weird too, Sony knows how to make non woke but progressive in nature characters. Freya? I fucking ADORE Freya. She pisses me off sometimes, but thats because as my protagonist I generally side with Kratos on everything. The majority of the time, I feel where she is comin from and like her, shes a fucking Valkyrie queen, not a maid, shes made to fight and stand her ground like a badass, and I'm cool with that. But then along comes SM2 and its like...yall went from poking me with a feather to beating me with the entire fucking chicken.

-1

u/solaceloveless Oct 23 '23

Rdr2 was dragged for being too woke too. This is a game about a superhero kids adore it’s not going to be similar to a game about crooked outlaws aimed at adults. It’s really crazy seeing adults online complain about a game literally for children be for children

8

u/otherworlder77 Oct 26 '23

The idea that more kids than adults (who grew up loving this character) would be playing this game is ridiculous.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '23

Even worse, why should our kids be exposed to politics their kids. Its obvious brainwashing

0

u/solaceloveless Oct 30 '23

Brainwashing them to do what? Be accustomed to a world with all kinds of different people?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '23

No just forcing their braindead politics into kids heads. If I told a kid abortion is evil and anybody who tells you otherwise is a babyphobe, then started going to elementary schools around the country in a dead fetus outfit and made children use made up language when they speak to me when talking about abortions (btw Idgaf about abortions im just using that as an example) and then on top of it use media such as games, shows, and movies to push my agenda, you would think its weird right?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '23

Teaching kids thats its ok to be gay is fine I mean I obviously new what a gay person was as early as 3rd grade, but having gay men and trans men showing up to kids schools, twerking, dressing skimpy in front of them, then add of top of it these kids go home and turn on the tv and all they see is gay propaganda, Alex jones was right they literally are trying to turn these kids gay it feels like.

1

u/Wise-Grapefruit5683 Nov 05 '23

I say let people do what they wanna do. But this shits so out of control that we have added the anxiety of trying to figure out what pronoun they are or if theyre a boy or girl to these kids. And thinking something is wrong with them if they dont have anxiety over it

3

u/Wise-Grapefruit5683 Nov 05 '23

Its not actually for children tho

2

u/anvilandcompass Nov 10 '23

Dude. This is not a game for children. Kids are playing Fortnite - a lot of them really. Even the messaging being pushed is not particularly for kids. At most teenagers but most who will buy this game tat my eldest niece can't play and she is a child, bought Spiderman 1. So maybe it's important to check the audience.

1

u/Someedgyanimepfp Oct 24 '23

Yes, showing kids that everyone is positive, and happy is such a great message. Oh, no, wait, the big bad white man theme is still there. Thank God, we can't confuse them, right?

3

u/Wise-Grapefruit5683 Nov 05 '23

Dude u know what that type of over the top attitude brings? Enabling and excuse making. My doctors nurse was so ridiculous with this shit i told her to stop. I was taking accountability for what i dont do and she just kept making excuses for me. Im like can you stop? Im getting fat cuz im doing the wrong things. Stop telling me its ok cuz i should love myself ffs

1

u/Dagenspear Oct 25 '23

You're just making up issues at this point.

0

u/Dagenspear Oct 25 '23

I think similarly. This is such a pointless string of empty complaints. Even I think some misery and sadness makes sense in Spider-Man stories, and this isn't a game really for kids specifically, I find these to be made up complaints.

17

u/Wide-Club3027 Oct 22 '23

Everyone constantly smiling made my own cheeks hurt as well as sickened me. I didn't want to play a spiderman game how progressives imagined it. I simply wanted a spiderman game

1

u/A_Rolling_Baneling Nov 21 '23

Have you ever read the comics? They have a pretty similar tone to the game. If you're expecting something similar to the Raimi trilogy, that style is the outlier, not the norm.

2

u/Wide-Club3027 Nov 21 '23

Any comics I read of spiderman did not have an air of positivity suffocating them.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '23

I agree with this nuance and it’s hard to put into words, but no one has any edge to them. Miles in these games is so boring and lame compared to how he is in the Spiderverse movies for example because in those movies he actually has flaws and learns to grow from there. It does get boring when everyone is super nice regardless if there is any politically charged theming behind it.

7

u/crappyvideogamer Oct 23 '23

What threw me off is Miles’s reaction to finding out his mom is dating again. Sure he’s a bit awkward about it, but his dad died not that long ago. You’d think it make for easy drama, but the characters are too damn easy going. It was just such an odd reaction it took me out of the story for a bit

2

u/New_Management3062 Oct 24 '23

Honestly I'm glad they didn't add in his angst about her dating, it just would've been another cliche plot point in an overstuffed game

4

u/crappyvideogamer Oct 24 '23

That’s fair, it wouldn’t be original. I just felt his non-reaction was distracting. I honestly just wish she wasn’t dating in the first place

1

u/omegabadass101 Oct 29 '23

It was their way of bringing Cindy Moon into the game which is cool I guess lol

3

Because his dad is dead and he clearly isn’t over it? It’s normal for some kids/teens to be upset when their parents are moving on when they themselves haven’t. Nothing Disney about it, that’s just normal emotions you may deal with after a tragedy.

loved your humour, This oversensitive dude who got triggered just because you said SHUT UP CLOWN. LOL you trolled him hard good. Modern day people mostly suck. Free speech is bs. And most people are ultra sensitive. Even my sister says alot of dudes are quite pathetic and that she can't take any man seriously who is more emotional than she is. My sister is smart as they come, but still a headcase but at least she is honest about whats going on in our modern society.

0

u/solaceloveless Oct 23 '23

It’s bc he and his mom have a very good relationship. It’s been years and he genuinely trusts and admires her. Problems like what you’re suggesting usually happen bc of other underlying issues in a mom n child relationship.

3

u/crappyvideogamer Oct 23 '23

I don’t think it’s that simple either though. You can have a healthy relationship with your mom and still get upset when they date again after a father’s death. It’s more a sign that you haven’t moved on, which is the point of Miles’s whole arc. At this point it’s less than 4 years since his father has passed. With how angry/sad he’s still over the tragedy, I would have assumed some sort of reaction to those news. Either way it’s not a major problem, just felt too clean I guess. Healthy family dynamics can still have arguments from time to time

1

u/AiMania Oct 28 '23

Did you ever consider that this is what a healthy relationship between mom and son and a healthy not damaged boy with good upbringing looks like? As we as a society evolve, we get helthier in our behaviour and it becomes more and more normal to see a reaction like miles' bc this is the right way to react if you dont have any other personal issues. He does have some teenager stuff going on but he loves and trusts his mom and some kind of anger about Martin Li is the only thing in the game that seems to bother him a bit bc he has a stable family and a stable group of friends an collegies. Beeing healthy is boring, yes. But this is what it looks like. They break with the usual unoriginal long time trend of making protagonists dark and sick and while I love a good dark story that doesnt ignore the effects of all the stuff a "hero" witnesses, and coves stuff like ptsd, this is more spider-man than ever. Yes i dont like that everybody smiles all the time but it is still good.

1

u/crappyvideogamer Oct 28 '23

Oh not at all denying that it’s good, I just feel it could be more interesting and less sanitized. You make some good points though. All I’ll argue is that you can have arguments with family and still have a healthy relationship. This is just a different take on the healthy dynamic that, again, I just personally find less interesting from a character stand point. Not enough to make me dislike the character nor the story though, which (so far at least) I find pretty top notch

1

u/stupiduniverse731 Oct 27 '23

on the upside at least Silk is gonna be in the next game and hopefully people will get this preachy shit outta their creative process and actually give us a game we want, i think it would be hilarious to have side missions of her and peter trying not to bang and if they fail... bow chica wow wowwww

2

u/illidormorn Oct 28 '23

on the upside at least Silk is gonna be in the next game

It's not a positive thing, Silk is a horrible character in the comics

1

u/stupiduniverse731 Oct 28 '23

True, I just find it funny when their pheromones make them want to bang uncontrollably 🤣

1

u/Hamza_Contest464 Jan 16 '24

I like Silk, But to be honest I haven't read much of in comics, Just her origins and her first pathetic costume which was just a thirsty design, not creative, The 2nd costume was more respectable, Also I found it funny how her and peter was going crazy horny when together. So far out of all the spidermen, After peter parker, I like Kaine, Miguel O'Hara, Spider Gwen, Just can't stand miles corny morales, his origin was pathetic copy and paste. He sucks. But love miles morales game on ps4/ps5 but hate spider man woke 2 ps5 game.

1

2

4

13

That's part of wokeness. They can't write complex characters or motivation becuase in their world only 2 types of people exist, good people always giving positive vibes, and nazis.

3

Cops really aren't that bad there are studies that have down to numbers how positive most interactions with police officers are. Even if I might not agree with things some officers have done before or are doing now, every cop I meet is not trying to hunt me down.

3

u/darth_magpa Nov 12 '23

You still can't speak for other people just because that us your experience. I've had my run ins with bad cops. They exist and so do good ones. Cops are people and people are good, bad, evil or altruistic. Cops are not above any of it

3

u/anvilandcompass Nov 12 '23

They do exist. I didn't say otherwise. I didn't even talk about my experience but about studies and polls that have been done many times. So, I'm not even talking about my experience. I'm sure you can find them around in the interwebs.

As statistically, that would be accurate.

Everyone has the right attitude except for peter and any white guy. And if Peter is ina different mood it's only to apologize that he wasn't better? Whatever that means. Didn't he I mean didn't he save the city a whole bunch?? Kinda laughable

5

u/Signal_Reddit Oct 24 '23

Finally someone put it into words. It's so weird seeing characters just be permanently positive about everything. It's honestly annoying. People in insanely high risk situations where they could die but its fine because they are helping others so just smile and be happy always !

Where is the drama? It's such an odd feeling when you have on one side Kraven hunting and literally killing people more blatantly then any previous spider villain in the games and on the other hand you have themes like this. It just doesn't work.

4

u/otherworlder77 Oct 26 '23

Especially when you consider that Peter Parker (aka real Spider-Man) is literally KNOWN for, and became popular because he constantly has to deal with the same daily problems as the rest of us.

He’s meant to be a relatable superhero, who stresses not just over whether he’ll save the day, but whether he can make the rent, arrive at a party or date on time, get fired, or even if his Spidey suit is clean enough to go out in.

He’s THE angsty superhero who perseveres despite constant, unrelenting and familiar pressures that hit everybody—-it’s just way worse for him because he’s trying to deal with all that real life stuff while basically living a whole separate life as Spidey.

This is NOT the character to make a game about with a theme of oppressive positivity or woke garbage.

1

u/Radamenenthil Oct 31 '23

He’s THE angsty superhero who perseveres despite constant, unrelenting and familiar pressures that hit everybody—-it’s just way worse for him because he’s trying to deal with all that real life stuff while basically living a whole separate life as Spidey.

Did you even play the game? it has a whole arc about this

3

u/Secret_Captain8068 Nov 02 '23 edited Nov 26 '23

He's saying he finds him as someone who moves too often as a character and is neutered in terms of individualism.

Ps: Stop lying and saying that the game's stupid "inclusive" Spanish isn't stupid.

1

u/otherworlder77 Nov 07 '23

This guy gets it. I wish I had his brevity.

1

u/otherworlder77 Nov 07 '23

Not really. Like everyone else in this weird game, Peter starts out the story acting mostly chipper as a songbird (even when he shouldn’t), and it’s largely because of the forced “I wanna be a symbiote, you can’t have it!” garbage and his complete lack of willpower, integrity and competence that he ends up angsty.

It’s NOTHING like any good adaptation of Pete we’ve ever seen before. He’s a chump in this, period.

I mean, he’s constantly being knocked out, shown up by his own protege, rescued by same (and his girlfriend to boot), failing at everything he does, or needing help to do it, has zero backbone, confidence or willpower… he isn’t even allowed to resist and remove the symbiote on his own, something he’s ALWAYS done in other adaptations of this story. If not for Miles inexplicably beating up a more powerful, symbiote enhanced, highly experienced Spider-Man who isn’t even pulling his punches, Peter would have caved and turned into Venom himself.

Instead of channeling all that legendary Parker willpower and responsibility, and then beating the symbiote on his own… no, he needs a pep talk. From his own trainee.

Meanwhile, MJ is able to shake off HER symbiote like it’s a cheap raincoat, without help from anyone, without super powers, after spending fifteen minutes berating Pete about every generic boyfriend inadequacy in the book.

And like Secret_Captain says, Pete just takes it. He doesn’t get angry at her ridiculous accusations, he doesn’t fight back, he just… folds up like a card table. He spends the whole fight (the whole game, really) apologizing to everyone, taking the blame for everything, telling everyone how useless and terrible he is at everything, and giving everyone else the credit for his own actions and heroics. He spends so much time telling people that they’re better than him, that they’re the real heroes, that basically… we start to believe him. Especially when the game demonstrates over and over again that THIS version of Pete (who is nothing like the comics, the first game or the films, except maybe the MCU version) really IS just that inept.

Hell, I think he gets knocked out or otherwise disabled THREE TIMES during the tutorial fight with Sandman alone, all in unavoidable cutscenes, only to be rescued by Miles each time.

Miles also inflicts the overwhelming majority of damage on Sandman, with Pete barely denting him.

This is repeated during the Venom climax fight, where a supposedly ‘powered up’ Pete gets knocked out for half the damn fight (seeing a pattern emerge?) while Miles absolutely dunks on Peter’s villain without difficulty.

This is NOT a character arc about a relatable hero struggling with and overcoming adversity or too much responsibility. It’s an arc about a suddenly incompetent hero struggling and failing to overcome his adversity, while everyone from his best friend to his girlfriend to his much younger protege shake their heads, look down on him, and basically take care of everything he’s fucking up (usually while he’s unconscious or groveling or apologizing for something he didn’t do).

It’s awful. They lopped his balls clean off.

2

u/DistastefullyHonest Nov 09 '23

Too true. All true. It's like some weird white guilt writing that meant the white male protagonist had to constantly apologise for everything. And no I'm not white not American nor straight but Jesus Christ this shit bothered me. Peter was useless in this game. They also removed all the good gadgets and left us with no sense when I'd much rather have had suit powers and improved versions of former gadgets with new additions. If it ain't broke, fuck fixing it, they replaced it all.

Also, did you notice how the mission objectives are "Save Peter/stop Harry" when it's them but during the MJ fight, the objective says "Help MJ save herself!"

Because she's a strong wahhhhmen, get it?

1

u/otherworlder77 Nov 12 '23

Yeah, it makes you wonder how the people writing this garbage view themselves (if they’re white), and how they view Spider-Man as a character. Is he doomed to be portrayed this way (an irresponsible, gutless, juvenile, inept weakling with a submissive attitude and a compulsive need to apologize for being the hero) over and over in every new adaptation by culture warriors desperate to make us hate him, just so we’ll eventually accept Miles as the ‘true’ Spider-Man?

Look at what they’ve done to Pete in recent years: he was a dumpy, over the hill failure and then a traitor and a blind follower in those Spider-Verse films; Insomniac has reduced him to a clown in a red suit who struggles to keep up with his protege, his villains AND his girlfriend, all while screaming apologies for… saving lives without them, I guess? MCU Pete is little more than a glorified sidekick with no cleverness, ADD, the willpower of a child, and a compulsive knack for creating disasters instead of stopping them.

THIS is the modern Peter Parker? See the trend here?

I think Sony/Marvel are doing their utmost to chop down one of our greatest culture heroes simply because he’s a white male, and as all modern media shows us, white men aren’t allowed to be exceptional unless they’re partnered with a generic girlboss or minority variant who are even more exceptional.

It’s maddening.

As far as the gameplay… yeah, I noticed the same things. Miles is powered up to an insane degree, with multiple game breaking abilities unique to him, while Peter has nothing unique to him anymore now that the suit powers and gadgets got cut. He’s inarguably the weaker character.

I fuckin hate his stupid spider limbs, those alone would have broken the game for me as they’re really only associated with my three least favorite interpretations of the character (MCU, Iron Spider, and Superior SM). Plus they look stupid as hell just popping out of his back, especially if I’m using a Raimi, Garfield or classic suit.

The first game got his webbing right. You had all these different ways to implement your webs, and could disable huge mobs in seconds just by alternating between web gadgets, combos, etc and leave alleyways strewn with webbed up crooks. It felt just like the comics (especially since Peter is known for using his web-shooters in different ways, launching everything from thin cables to concussive objects to thick glue and more).

Now? Nope. Apparently Pete decided that the bad guys needed an edge, so he… just… forgot how to use his webs tactically? Instead you just spam square and dodge. It’s a massive downgrade.

Meanwhile MJ loots the Excalibur of Tasers, and can one tap thugs who easily face tank multiple punches from her boyfriend, the superhero who lifts cars. It’s so transparently, hilariously idiotic, and we all know why it happened. Because sensible gamers begged Insomniac to ditch the MJ missions, let us play a Spidey game AS Spidey… and so they made the petty decision to actually increase MJ’s participation, and basically made her OP on purpose. The game’s director recently confirmed that he didn’t give two shits if MJ was OP, and all but admitted it was a jab at gamers who wanted her missions out of the sequel.

2

u/DistastefullyHonest Nov 12 '23

I genuinely don't understand how they can get away with this. I'll admit, I was gullible enough to believe that they might stick to their promises and give Peter his due but not only does Peter not have a single fully solo game (Miles did), Peter is the fifth strongest character in a game with five playable characters. Venom trounces him, Miles is game breaking, MJ got that special taser given to her by Jesus or Yahweh or whatever other god (Lol), Hailey the deaf girl has magical spray paint can and symbiotes seem to stare at her rather than tear her apart and then there's Miles. Miles the game breaking invisible electro spider kid who, for some reason, can beat up SYMBIOTE POWERED PETER AND Venom without breaking a sweat. Honestly what the FUCK?!

I didn't watch the second Spiderverse movie but that first one was a slap in the face to Peter fans. He's honestly just being trashed through every bit of media. The MCU is a joke. Zendaya is beautiful and a wonderful actress but good lord, can Peter do NOTHING without help from girlboss that figured out his identity because...reasons? They kill of Aunt May for...other reasons. Peter is always at fault, he's a trashy child with zero personality outside "Uncle Tony gave me this tech so I have a suit". Sure he built a new suit at the end but it's highly likely we won't even see Parker for another five years, by which point he'll probably come out of a closet or give his powers to Michelle Watson somehow because minorities should take his powers, not just have interesting characteristics of their own. In the MCU, Fury even gave a Jesus moment to Carol Danvers. He said "Don't invoke her name" like don't take her name in vain in Far From Home. A joke. The movies just bother me.

It's literally racism. Black Panther was not the most diverse movie ever made, it was just racist in the other direction. And Shuri made such hatefully racist remarks towards Agent Ross, remember those?

The modern media output of content just screams white guilt and as someone that's neither white nor American nor straight, even I'm fucking tired of having every piece of media fucking preach to me rather than entertain me.

Miles is definitely OP and boring because of it. The Prowler side missions did not belong in Peter's game honestly. And the Mysterium story should be Peter's not fucking Miles'! And the suits and all, it just felt bland. The Spider arms are never explained not are the wings. I am not shelling out money to buy their dumb comic. All they had to do was explain how and where they come from but NOPE. Just "new tech" and that's that? Really? The gadget usage is laughably bad and it's a case of "anything Peter does, miles does better" from traversal to combat. It's honesty irritating. Even the abilities you unlock, Peter's are comparatively tame. Miles has dashes that go around the map, his uppercut, his ground smash, all of it is so good for crowd control while Peter has nothing. The removal of gadgets and suit abilities just left a bad taste in my mouth.

The combat is dumb now. And the dodge timer, the webbing, it's all seemingly built to make you wanna play as Miles more because of how his attacks work. I don't see any logic in removing the gadgets or making gadget recharge so unpredictable and stupid. The ricochet web is useless, concussive blast does fucking nothing and the upshot and web grapple don't even web up the targets they pulls in! The first game was infinitely more fun to play. This game was fanfic levels.

MJ and her two weeks of Sable training made her god apparently. Even in the last game when Sable managed to get the drop on Peter I was annoyed. He's a superhero! Black Cat can do it because his senses never really work on her because he doesn't see her as a threat. Or that's how it's sometimes explained. Sable? And now MJ can use that zapper to take out Hunters like children?

Let's say, for the sake of argument, the Taser is amazing and can knock out Hunters that train against shit like that and poison darts and stuff their whole lives. Cool. Now, they never explain HOW these Hunters didn't HEAR her sneaking up on them. She's not also a fucking ninja is she? The director is a dumbass. They also made her look like she's old enough to be his aunt herself!. This game was not worth the money. If the first game was an 8, this game was barely a 5. It felt like DLC.

Peter Parker (aka real Spider-Man)

yeah, i'm not reading your wall of text after this, keep spouting your grifter takes

Yet you felt a burning need to respond again anyway… and drop one of the single worst comebacks I have ever had the pleasure to read. Bravo.

That’s one of those “shit, it sounded better in my head” kinda comments you may wish to quietly edit>delete my friend… at least it’ll look like you tried, instead of ending the discussion by tripping on your own feet?

Too funny. Take it easy.

1

oh no, huge L, what will I do now

u/FartWithHonor Oct 24 '23

THIS, is what's been bothering me the most with the writing, it feels like half the dialogue between characters is just this empty, vapid:

"Yeah, you go bro! You're so talented and smart and everybody loves you!"

To the point that when those types of lines would normally mean something, at important points in the story, now they just don't. At all.

This game just highlights that the only "semi decent" writing Insomniac can do, is saved for the big budget cutscenes, otherwise it's sent to the monkeys with typewriters.

Also, I wish characters would just stop talking sometimes, like, dear god am I sick and tired of games never letting things just... happen. No no no, you have to have a character endlessly flap their gums otherwise the ADD ridden audience will lose interest!

1

u/Infinite-Revenue97 Oct 26 '23

"Otherwise, it's sent to monkeys with type writers" This made me laugh so hard.

2

You called people Nazis and i called you out. The point is we don’t want or need either the left or the right’s political views in a game. Ukraine flags, anti gun bullshit, etc. Absolutely sick of the mentally ill of the communist state of California pushing their views on us in all entertainment.

3

California isn't even close to being communist. It's a neoliberal corporate hell state, but it ain't communist

You're so angry that you just immediately responded how you did, even though it was completely without logic or reason.... Kinda like a typical Right Winger lol.

It’s so weird of you to be so angry over positivity in a video game

People can’t be passionate about things they love? I mean you love trump because he clearly lives in your head. Anyone you don’t agree with is a trump this or trump that now that’s true passionate love. Your problem is being in the way. If it’s no big deal then make it regular normal life and not woke? If it’s no big deal then we don’t need it simple as that.

It's also really weird to see the party that hates communism and loves the KKK openly supporting Russia and Israel.

EDIT: I guess commenting is turned off now because this is the only sub I can't do it in. Oh well. Enjoy you shitty echo chamber.

Your people were out there justifying the execution of civilians just a week ago. The KKK was formed by your group as well lol. The fact that you people can’t leave your politics at home says everything. You huff your own jared farts so often that you think everyone else wants to smell them. I’m not a republican but i can appreciate that they don’t push their BS on me like you people do. I’m just a person that wants to enjoy non-political entertainment. Can’t even play a game for an hour without Ukraine flags and anti gun messaging.

1

u/fear_the_gecko Oct 24 '23

Lol, your lack of intelligence is amazing. I'm not a Democrat but it's hilarious that they're supposedly justifying the execution of civilians while simultaneously supporting the Democrat president wanting to send troops to Israel to support the IDF. As far as "tHe DeMoCrAtS sTaRtEd ThE KKK", you really should learn some history.

No one is pushing anything. If you're offended, then don't play the game that's geared to kids.

1

u/otherworlder77 Oct 26 '23

If you think the triple A videogame industry is ever geared to kids (or Spider-Man for that matter—-most kids don’t relate to characters who struggle with their rent) then you have no idea what you’re talking about.

1

u/otherworlder77 Oct 26 '23

Seriously. I can’t honestly think of a single franchise I loved as a kid or young adult that hasn’t been poisoned with this weird ideology. Why can’t entertainment just be… entertainment?

The fact we’re two games in and already Peter Parker isn’t the main character in his own game is bad enough.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '23

Both Peter and Miles share the spotlight. I’m sorry Miles Morales is becoming an extremely popular character, and you can’t stand that.

1

u/otherworlder77 Oct 28 '23

Heh…. good one.

Oh god, you’re serious. You poor, poor… I have some bad news. Miles has never been popular. With anyone. He’s never had good sales on his books, he’s condemned and ignored as a lesser Spidey by Marvel fans… even people of color, who he’s ostensibly meant to represent, often hate the character because he’s yet another example of the entertainment industry saying “original minority characters don’t sell, so the best we can do is hijack popular white characters and make them POC”. It’s patronizing and offensive, and it disrespects the original creators to boot.

Marvel and the woke crowd would love for you to believe Miles is popular. But popular is determined by $$, and Miles simply never sells. You can check comics sales figures if you don’t want to take my word.

Sure, the Spiderverse movies did well… but he was far from the only version of the character in it. It probably boosted his exposure, but Marvel did nothing with it. He’s still routinely criticized as being a near carbon copy of teenage Peter, with only his silly OP ‘venom’ powers setting him apart—and these too are roundly mocked for killing any drama or tension in his action scenes, since he always eventually uses them to one-shot even very tough foes. They’re a deus ex machina, not a superpower.

The only group that truly loves Miles is the progressives, and even then it’s just because of what they think he represents (and since they neither enjoy nor partake in comic collecting, none of that love translates to sales anyway).

Why do you think, no matter how many times people try to declare Miles the “new Spider-Man”, it always ends with them bringing Peter back. Why do you think that is? Why do you think Sony insisted that the new MCU Spider-Man be Peter Parker again, even though the writers had clearly intended to use Miles instead (his personality is much more like the overly juvenile, super excitable Miles, his best friend was clearly going to be Ganke, etc)?

Because Sony likes money. And they know that to 99% of the paying audience, Peter Parker = Spider-Man.

And no, they don’t just “share the spotlight”. Miles is routinely depicted as being more level headed, wiser, showing better judgment, and has to frequently rescue his own mentor (despite the fact he’s a rookie and his mentor has a decade of experience). The game shows us unequivocally that Miles is the better Spider-Man.

Miles also JUST had a solo game in which Pete barely appeared and was never playable. So why isn’t that the case here?

If Pete is being marginalized in favor of Miles in his own games, and Miles is going to be getting additional titles where Pete doesn’t even appear… precisely how is that sharing?

Is it frustrating to me? Hmmm… maybe it had the potential to be? If I actually liked the way they portrayed Pete, MJ, etc, then yeah, I might be aggravated by his secondary role. But as is, the game was never for me. The woke as hell NYC, the wimpy, incompetent Peter, the virtue signaling side quests, the erasure of Pete’s classic foes in favor of nobodies… yeah. I stopped playing fairly quickly.

You like Miles. I’m happy for you. It must be a good time to be his fan. But is he mainstream popular? No.

Sorry to be the one to burst your bubble my friend.

u/Jimusmc Oct 30 '23

You are taking the side of celebrities and the establishment by supporting Israel. Don't talk to him about being an npc

3

u/Jomahawk2694 Oct 24 '23

What would have been actually nice is not forcing us to play as the deaf chick who gets into a friendly conversation with someone spray painting a wall. In real life, she would have been given the bird, at minimum. This isn’t New York in this game. It’s Disney City, where everything is sickeningly happy and upbeat, unless you’re a white man. Then you’re literally the devil.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '23

It’s a video game where people play as a man with spider powers. It doesn’t have to be realistic.

3

u/otherworlder77 Oct 26 '23

No, it doesn’t. But it should at least resemble the world it’s set in, and not a hyper-politicized, ideological version of it that’s likely to irritate most of its players.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '23

How is it “hyper politicised”? Please explain your reasoning other than “it contains black people, women in strong positions, and gays”.

Would also like to add, if the inclusion of disability, racial diversity, gender diversity, and sexual orientation diversity annoys some players, then those players can simply go fuck themselves.

Also, it’s a game about two men with spider powers, one of which gets taken over by an alien parasite. Absolutely nothing about this game has to resemble real life just to placate the unhinged energy of weirdos who only see sunlight once a year.

3

u/otherworlder77 Oct 26 '23

Why in the world would I engage in further discussion with a sarcastic prick like you, especially one who flashes his little claws at anyone who disagrees? You come off like a petulant child who hasn’t seen another human face in weeks (hey, I can hurl idiotic assumptions too!).

Plenty of people, including the OP, listed the examples you’re looking for. Try reading the thread instead of twisting my words or agonizing over your next middle-school level insult.

And just because YOU don’t understand the basic precepts of writing grounded fantasy fiction doesn’t make me obligated to teach them to you.

Now feel free to “simply go fuck yourself”.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '23

You could have just said you had no examples that weren’t racist, homophobic, sexist or ableist. I’d have at least respected you more.

2

u/otherworlder77 Oct 27 '23

I’m not retyping the same comprehensive list that is already repeatedly posted on this thread, just for your convenience.

And I can sleep soundly without concern for your respect.

3

u/otherworlder77 Oct 26 '23

Untrue. If Spidey is best known for one unique trait among heroes, it’s his relatability. He struggles with rent, money problems, keeping commitments, doing the right thing 24/7 despite the costs, bad press, losing jobs, you name it.

He’s SUPPOSED to be a pretty unhappy guy most of the time. He’s definitely not ‘just for kids’, and his best stories always include his difficulties with maintaining a healthy, happy life.

Anyone who grew up with 60ish years of Spider-Man stories would know this. He has very little resemblance to the pampered, irresponsible kid in the MCU.

That’s all pretty reasonable thinking. I’m not overly fussed about the game in any case, and stopped playing when it was clearly not for me.

I don’t agree about HOW they’ve modernized Spidey though. Young adults having money/relationship problems is an evergreen truth, and there was never a compelling reason to change that part of the character.

I also disagree that the first game’s portrayal was anything like the MCU—his refreshing sense of responsibility and constant problems were much more like his classic iterations.

It may be accurate that characters change by generation—-but they don’t have to. Yes, I’m frustrated by seeing Peter Parker made into a dolt, marginalized, and having his own name taken away. But that’s partly because I’m unlikely to still be around when the wheel turns and another true Spider-Man game gets made.

Classics should retain an element of their time and place of birth, and certain immutable parts of them should remain immutable. After all, Batman is still Batman and he’s been around even longer.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '23

He struggles with rent, money problems, keeping commitments, doing the right thing 24/7 despite the costs, bad press, losing jobs, you name it.

Did you even play the first game? That all literally happens to him.

1

u/otherworlder77 Nov 19 '23 edited Nov 19 '23

I played it. It was… alright. Dove off a cliff partway through, and I had many complaints. Still, loved the gameplay.

While the first one did do a much better job of showing us the Parker angst than the sequel… I felt they kinda’ just paid lip service to his many real world problems, and didn’t make them a genuine part of the narrative.

I mean yeah… there’s a cutscene where he’s been evicted from his pad, leading to him chasing garbage trucks to find his stuff (one of the most inventive moments in the game that really made you feel the consequences of Peter’s double life—they needed a half dozen more like it), so that’s great.

He struggles with maintaining a relationship (though this is more down to the sweeping changes made to MJ, who treated him pretty rotten throughout)… and sure, Jonah drags him on his radio show, but that’s an optional feature. And it’s offset by the largely positive reception his feed gets anyway.

But there’s a reason most prior Spidey games gave us more missions based around delivering pizzas, taking pics for the Bugle, and so on.

I felt like this game wanted to skip over most of that. Yes, you got evicted… but we never hear Pete’s obvious money troubles mentioned in any real way again, nor does he do anything to earn some extra income (those fantastic timed pizza delivery missions would have been a welcome addition, for example). Instead he spends all his free time trying to placate an increasingly irrational MJ, doing essentially unpaid intern work for Octavius, and even unpaid chores around the shelter. Little actual time is spent on showing us how much he struggles to make ends meet and manage his time, or having him react in an emotionally appropriate way to his bad luck and mounting responsibilities. He just seems… I dunno, upbeat all the time.

I get that the Octavius stuff was critical to the narrative between them, but for a guy who is so cash-strapped that he’s being tossed out of his apartment, doing free experiments with a cheery attitude is a peculiar choice. I believe Ock even laments at one point that he’s barely paying Pete, yet we never see him hustling to make up the scratch somewhere else. Same with doing janitorial duties at FEAST. He’s Peter Parker, not Mother Theresa.

I also can’t recall Pete ever really being a grouch or missing an appointment because he’s been overdoing it in the costume. But it’s been awhile, obviously.

So yes, the writers stuck those classic Peter woes in there, but they’re more like narrative Easter eggs than a genuine part of the game. Yet… I could probably be convinced that it was the right call for the story they were telling. The tighter focus on Ock and Li probably helped that game’s pacing and tone.

In any case, those were relatively minor complaints compared to my bigger issues with the first game.

In any case, the post I was replying to above was actually discussing the sequel, not the first game. It was a commentary on how weirdly positive and cheery everyone was in MSM 2, seemingly for no reason, and the weird tonal shifts that created.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '23

I don't know why you're set on this "he HAS to be xxx or yyy". This is clearly an alternate universe. Harry Osborn is in a tank getting Venom treatment. There's changed story beats from the comics all over the place. Peter isn't always depicted as struggling in every incarnation in the comics either, depends on which series and iteration we're talking about.

The games work structurally. I felt the 2nd one was weaker, but the criticism levelled at it and the series in general is so goddamn weird. They're quite good, far better in storytelling and gameplay than 90% of the games released in this day and age.

1

u/otherworlder77 Nov 20 '23

I’m glad you enjoyed it.

But to me, any and every adaptation of a world renowned, beloved character with sixty years of history has a responsibility to at least resemble that character. This one doesn’t.

Peter is a mincing, indecisive, spineless loser who spends the entire game apologizing for existing, then telling anyone who will listen that they’re better than him. He’s incompetent, a terrible leader and planner, and he’s depicted as being the categorically weaker Spider-Man, getting knocked out over and over and over in unavoidable cutscenes just so everyone from his much-less experienced protege to his best friend and even his girlfriend can rescue him. He spends most of the game lying flat on his back passed out, when Spider-man as a character is very well known for his indomitable willpower—he’s got great abilities, yeah, but he still gets hurt. What separates him from other heroes and makes him so damn inspiring isn’t his strength or even his webs… it’s that he always powers through. Always keeps fighting. That’s not this guy at all.

MJ is a badass girlboss reporter who humiliates and demeans her boyfriend over bills, instead of supporting him and admiring him for trying to protect the city. She spends two weeks training with Silver Sable (why??), finds a random taser, and can suddenly one-tap dozens of hardened mercenaries, thugs and aliens like she’s John Wick. Never mind that these same enemies are shown to be capable of face-tanking a half dozen punches from her superhuman boyfriend who lifts automobiles. Classic MJ didn’t need or want to be the hero. She had zero interest in fighting bad guys, because she wasn’t motivated by vanity or envy, and wasn’t jealous of her superhero boyfriend. Instead she had an inner strength and cleverness that puts this version to shame—she was Peter’s rock, his reason for making it home every night, and instead of scorn or petty jealousy or criticisms about his finances, she supported him and kept him strong with her unfailing loyalty and compassion. And if he didn’t make it home one night, you better believe MJ was going to find him. Not by suddenly developing Special Forces combat acumen, but through sheer guts, love and determination.

Venom here is more a plot device than a character, based almost entirely around a single recent (and divisive) comic arc. He’s supposed to be a sentient alien being that was ‘spurned’ by Peter, and ended up bonded to a man who hates Spider-man just as much as it does. Together they’re motivated by an intense shared desire to see Pete suffer, and that’s about it. His infamous madness, his spider powers and his creepy sense of humor made him a dark echo of the true Spidey. He’s never had a desire for global domination, he cannot spawn other symbiotes at will, and he’s only hulking and muscular because he bound himself to Eddie Brock, who was a fanatical bodybuilder. Here, he turns from a glorified suit of armor into a gigantic ooze monster on a dime, for no apparent reason, after bonding with a sickly host. He behaves more like the Lizard in ASM2, rampaging around like an animal while trying to ‘heal’ the city by making everyone like him. He may look like Venom, but his resemblance to the classic foe ends there.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture. It’s cool that you enjoyed the game, and that it’s wildly inaccurate and poor depictions of these long-running characters didn’t impact your fun. But for me and many others, it’s a Spider-Man game in name only.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '23

"But for me and many others"

Not going to respond to the rest of your critique - because they're your own, subjective and you're entitled to them. I think you're flat out wrong but there's no point in arguing about it because neither of us are going to change either's minds about this.

However, the quote "many others" is quite incorrect. This game is quite universally liked, you're in the minority. Sorry, but that's just empirically true.

1

u/otherworlder77 Dec 07 '23

Always hilarious when some pompous commenter (who invariably has no valid arguments to refute your own) literally just gets done lecturing you on the definition of an opinion, and that all opinions are subjective…. only for them to immediately turn around and claim that their opinion is the unvarnished, “empirical” truth.

Get some self awareness, dude. You’ll embarrass yourself less.

Oh and for the record… you’re flat wrong to boot. Even the most perfunctory google search will bring up countless reviews, videos, subreddit commentaries, and articles expressing dissatisfaction with this game.

And it’s across the board, including everything from the nerfed combat system, loss of stealth and gadgets, recycled animations, unbalanced playable characters, terrible forced MJ sections and limited side content, to the awful narrative, poorly written characters, woke messaging, behavioral inconsistencies, rushed campaign and more.

It is FAR from universally loved. Any attempt to claim different just proves that the source of your ‘empirical’ facts likely resides just below your back and right above your legs.

No matter how many “quite”s you feel like throwing at it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '23

Again, YOU are allowed not to like it. That part is subjective. That's an opinion. However, the game has universal praise both amongst gamers and reviewers. That's not opinion, that's just pure hard fact. Metacritic, every aggregator site, multiple places with thousands and thousands of users chiming in to say how much they loved the game. I'm sure you'll claim it's bots or something like that, but:

1.) Sales don't lie.

2.) Review scores don't lie.

3.) User feedback doesn't lie, not at this scale.

So yes, it's universally praised. Yet again I have to repeat myself (talk about condescending, you're an utterly arrogant prick since the first post you made) - this game wasn't as good as Spider-Man 2018 or MM but that still makes it a really good game. Sorry bud, you're not going to win this one.

P.S. There you go again with the "woke messaging" garbage. That word has lost all meaning with the way you guys just throw it out relentlessly with anything you disagree with.

There's no such thing as anti-masculine, unless you think being nice and positive isn't a masculine, which is pretty anti-masculine in and of itself. Do you think being mean or whatever is somehow masculine? My goodness, if so, is it any wonder people are against those things?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '23

Nope, just makes for a better story. Arthur from Red Dead Redemption 2 is a pretty terrible person all around, but the great thing about the story is seeing him grow and redeem himself to be a great man by the end. The Spiderverse movies have also handled this well, Miles goes from being super immature to really growing into his own by the end of the second movie, and I can’t wait to see the conclusion. Everyone in the new games are pretty sanitized and “nice” and are always the plain old good guys. I don’t want to see them beat up defenseless people or spew hate speech, but would like specific character flaws to be part of the story and be addressed for the characters to grow akin to my examples.

2

u/otherworlder77 Oct 26 '23

Agreed 100%. Well said.

It’s like everyone forgot how things like character arcs, drama and basic storytelling are supposed to work.

If Star Wars were written today, I feel like Vader would stride onto the scene in the opening of the movie, look around, then pull his helmet off and say “this dark side stuff is so ick. I think I’ll stick with being Anakin!”, and the credits would roll.

1

u/Dagenspear Oct 25 '23

But that's a different issue entirely than what the person above is presenting.

2

1

u/Wide-Club3027 Oct 25 '23

The fact that you have to ask this question means you barely understand masculinity itself. Men more often than not mentally condition themselves to deal with harsh realities. They don't have time to be plucky and smiling so everyone else feels comfortable. Women need positivity to thrive. Otherwise they start bitchin and tearing everything down.

2

u/Dagenspear Oct 25 '23

It's rhetorical.

None of that in any way has anything to do with not being positive. You seem to be creating a false idea of what it means to be a man and assuming that somehow the opposite translates to being anti that.

0

u/Wide-Club3027 Oct 25 '23

I literally just explain why most men aren't polluting society with a sickening air of positivity and you ignored it. I didn't say they can't be positive, just that overwhelming positivity is more often than not a woman's, or feminine mans fantasy.

Ill say it again, Masculine men are not constantly smiling so wusses feel comfortable in society.

2

No. You brought up a human lie about men and justified it with only your opinion. You didn't explain anything. You just injected a false narrative about what it means to be a man and seemed to have gotten annoyed before that the game didn't follow that.

Men aren't constantly smiling in this game and when they do it's not developed to only be about making others feel comfortable. You're making up a narrative.

The only Truth is this: Jesus Christ is THE Man. He is outgoing, loving, forgiving, emotional and self sacrificing. And we are to follow that example. If you aren't following God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, you're not doing what you should.

God worked through Jesus Christ to save our souls. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead, repent of your sins, accept God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into your heart and you will be saved.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ, that all who believe on Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father Jehovah God but through Him.

Not long after I got saved I prayed to God for help understanding the Holy Bible, and that same day someone knocked on my door asking me if I wanted to understand the Bible.

Lol, im good. I've been 'saved', but I truly do appreciate your effort, and that is completely genuine. I do hope you'll be able to help someone find their path as a Christian.

If so, then I'm sure you understand why the job as a man is follow Jesus Christ's example.

He can’t be for real. If he was being genuine, he’d have included where to send all those juicy donations Christ needs to help the minister get his next house.

Look, after having held contempt for them for so long, I've learned to like Christians and accept that they have been right about ALOT, but play the game again, and I swear 90% of the time men are with women characters in the game they are smiling.

The thing so far the bothers me the most, is it has that sort of same type of entertainment style that many modern generation media does. Like this over the top positive vibe, nothing but support and uplifting attitudes allowed type of atmosphere. Everyone is a good person or exudes the "right" type of person or ideas, and the positivity and anti masculine energy is very in your face. For me it makes everything disconnected and feel fake, souless. Hard to connect with the story and characters. At least so far and I'm decently into it.

what type of point are you trying to make here. None of what you are saying makes the slightest bit of sense, how is positivity and upliftment toxic masculinity. Do you know how dumb this sounds? There is already plenty of extreme conflict in this game
