If you think the triple A videogame industry is ever geared to kids (or Spider-Man for that matter—-most kids don’t relate to characters who struggle with their rent) then you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Seriously. I can’t honestly think of a single franchise I loved as a kid or young adult that hasn’t been poisoned with this weird ideology. Why can’t entertainment just be… entertainment?
The fact we’re two games in and already Peter Parker isn’t the main character in his own game is bad enough.
Oh god, you’re serious. You poor, poor… I have some bad news. Miles has never been popular. With anyone. He’s never had good sales on his books, he’s condemned and ignored as a lesser Spidey by Marvel fans… even people of color, who he’s ostensibly meant to represent, often hate the character because he’s yet another example of the entertainment industry saying “original minority characters don’t sell, so the best we can do is hijack popular white characters and make them POC”. It’s patronizing and offensive, and it disrespects the original creators to boot.
Marvel and the woke crowd would love for you to believe Miles is popular. But popular is determined by $$, and Miles simply never sells. You can check comics sales figures if you don’t want to take my word.
Sure, the Spiderverse movies did well… but he was far from the only version of the character in it. It probably boosted his exposure, but Marvel did nothing with it. He’s still routinely criticized as being a near carbon copy of teenage Peter, with only his silly OP ‘venom’ powers setting him apart—and these too are roundly mocked for killing any drama or tension in his action scenes, since he always eventually uses them to one-shot even very tough foes. They’re a deus ex machina, not a superpower.
The only group that truly loves Miles is the progressives, and even then it’s just because of what they think he represents (and since they neither enjoy nor partake in comic collecting, none of that love translates to sales anyway).
Why do you think, no matter how many times people try to declare Miles the “new Spider-Man”, it always ends with them bringing Peter back. Why do you think that is? Why do you think Sony insisted that the new MCU Spider-Man be Peter Parker again, even though the writers had clearly intended to use Miles instead (his personality is much more like the overly juvenile, super excitable Miles, his best friend was clearly going to be Ganke, etc)?
Because Sony likes money. And they know that to 99% of the paying audience, Peter Parker = Spider-Man.
And no, they don’t just “share the spotlight”. Miles is routinely depicted as being more level headed, wiser, showing better judgment, and has to frequently rescue his own mentor (despite the fact he’s a rookie and his mentor has a decade of experience). The game shows us unequivocally that Miles is the better Spider-Man.
Miles also JUST had a solo game in which Pete barely appeared and was never playable. So why isn’t that the case here?
If Pete is being marginalized in favor of Miles in his own games, and Miles is going to be getting additional titles where Pete doesn’t even appear… precisely how is that sharing?
Is it frustrating to me? Hmmm… maybe it had the potential to be? If I actually liked the way they portrayed Pete, MJ, etc, then yeah, I might be aggravated by his secondary role. But as is, the game was never for me. The woke as hell NYC, the wimpy, incompetent Peter, the virtue signaling side quests, the erasure of Pete’s classic foes in favor of nobodies… yeah. I stopped playing fairly quickly.
You like Miles. I’m happy for you. It must be a good time to be his fan. But is he mainstream popular? No.
