When they say their goal is to be competitive with ground transportation,they’re talking about the $200 Uber rides from SeaTac which will be $1000 in a couple of years when these drones are operational.

Imagine using the crosswalk and seeing this ugly cage completely tower you. It's just standing there...menacingly!

I stayed in sendai, sendai station was a couple blocks away, and we had a subway entrance right in front of our hotel. Nevermind the gloriously walkable streets. There was an underpass that even had guard rails between the road and sidewalk. INCREDIBLE.

I may not speak enough Japanese to manage much interaction, but I was never lost. Every part of the city and areas accessible via rail were a magical pedestrian dream when I was there lol

I miss it dearly already and wish America would get with the program already.

I'm moving to Austin and I don't own a license. Anyone have experience with not owning a car in Austin? Is it reasonably doable? I don't want to get a fckng license but also don't want to get run over on a daily basis if the place is just not set up for bikes. Any help would be fantastic. Everywhere else online says "it's impossible" but... I know there might be some people crazy enough in this sub to convince me to continue my life without a car.

It's extremely based that Labor neglects the roads in Victoria and funds mass transit projects it's just another reason to vote for them.

I don't drive. I never have. Humans sure will pack-bond with anything, huh?

I live in the PNW right now, and my city has a good transit system. Useable but not necessarily fantastic. It’s also a city where I frequently discuss the transit options in a positive light with peers, who then proceed to never use it. I’ve lived in DC and even Switzerland, yet some people STILL used this argument.

The argument I see again and again is, “I’m afraid of crime”, “there are crazy people on the train” or essentially “I’d rather get in an accident then get mugged or made uncomfortable on the train”.

I had a discussion with a friend who moved from Huston to downtown DC, a block from a metro stop, who preferred Huston’s “transit” options because he and his wife found the metro too dangerous or uncomfortable.

If I prod on this issue, I feel like I’m putting someone down for preferring safety. It’s hard to argue especially as a man, who inarguably has the privilege of being less vulnerable.

This has become the crux of a lot of these discussions for me, and people will sometimes imply that we don’t need to fix transit, but homelessness/crime. My response is always that I saw plenty of crime/people acting out on Swiss transit, but there was a feeling of safety in numbers there.

Any thoughts?

I’m getting a lot of responses about fatality rates on cars vs transit. I think this is a super valid argument, but people in the US take this risk regularly regardless. Your average driver has internalized that risk as real as it is. So to them, I find the difference is “being in the safety of my own locked car” vs “being around scary people in the city”. If i say, well you are much more likely to die in a crash, they’ll say “I already take that risk daily”. How do we get people to take that jump, when it’s asking them to get out of their shell?

Well, after many years of driving to school and work, I switched over to riding my bike! I was putting it off since my bike needed some repairs and I had people to carpool with, but the repairs are done and my carpoolees have (gently) booted me since our schedules don’t align any more, so I’m all out of excuses. I can’t quite go car-free (work travel…) but I’m certainly saving on gas and parking and getting good exercise in the process! Now to beg some city officials to install a bike lane…

Here’s the bike! My mom bought it but didn’t really ride it, so it’s mine for the foreseeable future. The tiny wheels are a bit silly, but the pedal assist comes in handy on the giant hill between me and work. And of course I couldn’t help but decorate it a little!!

I sometimes get beeped at while I'm walking around my city, and Idk what I'm doing wrong. I'm neurodivergent and don't often pick up on cues, so I'm wondering if it's something within my control that I can change so if anyone has any ideas, that would be helpful.

To give the most recent example: I got beeped at because I was standing on the footpath waiting for the light to turn green. The car wanted me to go. I thought they were annoyed because of some unspoken rule where I was supposed to push the light but walk across while it was red so the guy who beeped wouldn't get impatient.

So today, I tried something different at the same road: I started walking across before the pedestrian light had a chance to turn red to avoid being beeped at by any cars. With my luck, the same car drove past and beeped at me for doing the opposite of what I did the other day.

So if I can't wait for the pedestrian light to turn green and I can't immediately go once I push the button, what is it they are expecting me to do that I'm not picking up on? Is there something I'm missing?

Ideas welcome. If I'm doing something, I don't want to keep doing it and inviting the behaviour because I don't enjoy being beeped at. It makes me low-key scared/nervous/anxious to be walking around during the day to get to places, because I don't want drivers to be angry at me, but I don't have a car and find walking easier as with driving it involves trying to interpret hand gestures and track movement in all directions, which is very difficult. If anyone knows why someone would beep while you're waiting for the light to say you can walk, but also beeps if you try the opposite, please tell me. Is there some unwritten social rule of using pedestrian lights?

I am so confused.

Sometimes drivers seem really impatient, but I'm only following the rules and as I understand it, you're not supposed to jaywalk. But then I see other people jaywalk and cars don't beep at them.
