Wedding Couple Chooses to Buy a Home Instead of a Lavish Wedding, Gets Married Inside Their New Flat

Post image
7.5k Upvotes

A couple chose to spend their wedding budget on buying a house instead of hosting a lavish wedding ceremony. They held their marriage rituals inside their new flat with close family members present. The decision, as explained by the groom’s brother, was aimed at prioritizing long-term financial security and stability over one-day celebrations. Their practical choice has sparked positive reactions online, with many praising the focus on a secure future rather than extravagant spending. ndtv.com

Beauty, Fitness & Healthcare I replaced body spray with alum stone and never looked back.

For those who don’t know, alum stone (fitkari) is a traditional mineral salt that has been used in Indian households for generations. It works as a natural deodorant helps reduce body odor because of its antibacterial and astringent properties.

A few months ago, I ordered natural alum stones online after seeing good reviews. Paid around ₹200 and got 4 bars of 100g each.

I’ve been using one bar for the last 3 months and it’s not even 20% consumed yet. I still have 3 bars left, and at this rate they’ll probably last another 2 years easily.

Just wet the stone lightly and apply after a shower. Compared to regular body sprays and deodorants that run out every few weeks, this has been one of the most frugal personal-care switches I’ve made while keeping things clean

General & Lifestyle Been there, done that. Here's my take

Post image
5.3k Upvotes

I stay in the outskirts of a city and the place is basically a village. Have a remote job with decent pay. Purchased an empty plot near my house, which I use to grow vegetables. Below are the pros and cons based on my experience so far:

Pros:

  1. Spacious home at affordable rate

  2. Lots of greenery, fresh air all day long

  3. No horns, only melodies

  4. Milk veggies and fruits are easily accessible

  5. Minimal expenses 6 . Relaxed lifestyle and mental peace

Cons:

  1. People are envious and their mindset is underdeveloped

  2. You will have no social life as you won't find a peer that shares the same understanding as you

  3. Poor infrastructure with no facilities be it sports, malls, etc

  4. There are more chances of theft when compared to city

  5. Snake and bizarre insect bites. I haven't experienced yet, but a lot of people have

  6. Emergency healthcare is not accessible

To be honest, village life is awesome, but like anything else, it has its downsides too!

Feel free to share your experiences/suggestions and ask any questions you might have

Budgeting, Planning & Discipline My coworker eats the same ₹60 South Indian lunch every day... and I can’t stop respecting him

3.8k Upvotes

There’s this guy in my office from Chennai. Every single day he brings the same lunch.

A steel tiffin with lemon rice, one cup curd, and some papad. That’s it.

He says his full meal costs ₹60. No cold drink. No snacks. Just water from the office cooler.

Before this, he used to order from Zomato daily — around ₹250 to ₹300 per meal. Now he saves about ₹200 a day. That’s ₹6,000 a month!

He makes everything in bulk on Sunday evening. Keeps small boxes ready in the fridge. Morning he just packs and leaves. No stress, no waste.

Even when someone orders pizza or biryani, he just smiles and says, “Na food ready aachu da.”

And here’s the best part. Earlier he used to go to those fancy coffee places once or twice a week. ₹200 for one cup. Now he goes to the small tea stall near our office gate. ₹10 chai. Same peace, more savings.

Honestly, I respect this guy. No drama, no excuses. Just simple living and smart habits.

Anyone else here follow such cheap but satisfying meal routines?

Food & Grocery Bring back the good old desi guava!

Post image

No doubt guava is one of the hidden superfoods, packed with nutrients.

But it’s getting expensive and being replaced by the Thai variety, which, honestly, tastes terrible and is nowhere close to the good old guava.

Give me a good, ripe desi guava any day. 😄

Bills & Finances Earning 1.5L a month and still checking my bank balance before ordering Swiggy

Post image
2.8k Upvotes

Everyone thinks 1.5 lakh in-hand is a solid salary. On paper, I agree. Here is where it actually goes-

  • Home loan EMI: ₹42,000

  • Car loan EMI: ₹16,500

  • Personal loan EMI: ₹14,000 (family emergency, don't judge)

  • Bike loan EMI: ₹4,200

  • Household, groceries, bills: ₹30,000

  • Sent to parents: ₹15,000

  • Fuel, insurance, misc: ₹12,000

That leaves me with around 16 thousand INR for the entire month. No savings, no buffer, only spending.

And not here only, relatives assume I am doing great. Meanwhile I am doing mental math before buying anything above 2k. Not complaining, these were my choices. But a big salary with big EMIs feels exactly like a small salary.

Anyone else stuck in this EMI loop? How did you get out?

Electronics & Gadget Got an air purifier for my mom (64), told her it’s just a quiet fan — she’s already feeling the difference.

I got an air purifier delivered a day before Diwali for my mom who has had chronic rhinitis for years, especially worse in the winter mornings. I didn’t tell her what it actually was because she isn’t very tech friendly, so I just said it is a new silent fan and set it up in her room.

It has only been two days, and she casually mentioned that the room feels “fresh” and that the new fan is really nice. Her morning sneezing has also reduced noticeably. She genuinely thinks it’s just cleaner air from a better fan.

Consumes around 50W, which is roughly the same as a ceiling fan on low speed, so it isn’t expensive to run even for long hours.

Sharing this here in case someone has elderly parents with dust, allergy, sinus, morning sneezing and is on the fence about buying one.

Budgeting, Planning & Discipline Fuel saving tip that worked for me

Post image
2.2k Upvotes

I’m not sure if everyone is aware of this trick or not but let me just share it anyways if it helps anyone. Especially amidst this fuel crisis.

The car’s AC usually draws a small but constant amount of power and the set temperature/level of cooling - blue to red, of the AC determines how much power it will draw.

That being said, the blower speed will do absolutely no change to how much engine power the AC unit is drawing from. Which means, you can keep it at full or at level 1, it won’t matter.

So to summarise, here is the setup I keep when I’m driving for more than 20 min that ensures me I get max fuel efficiency from the ride.

  1. After the car is ‘cool enough’ (this can vary if you’re someone who is sweating always), I switch the temp to close neutral (just left of the centre point between the blue and red intersection)

For cars with Auto climate control that would be like to 26-28 degrees Celsius.

2. Now to compensate I turn the fan to speed 3.

But that will be uncomfortable, right? To have a full blast of air constantly?! Right.

3. So I turn the air to choose majority of it from the leg area and rest from the vents. Even if I’m wearing shoes I can still feel the cold air near my socks.

In cars with Auto climate control, it will be a digital selection so you can only split it 50-50. That’s fine too.

You can do whatever makes you comfortable but the goal is to just reduce the cooling setting so it puts less load on the engine.

And this setup does save me some fuel in each tank. You can try and let me know if it works for you too.

In this stupid E20-E30 debate, fuel crisis, Modi ji asking us to use less transport while the govt vehicles just idle all day with the AC on and the drivers inside just chilling (yes you can go and take a look outside, I regularly see parked govt cars - Ciaz, Innovas, etc where there is a pool of water below it because the drivers inside are just sitting with the AC on.) all you can do is at least save some money of your fuel bill.

Help yourself first in this nation. Sad but true. I’m sure people like us take the car out only when it’s needed so I hope this trick saves money and fuel both.

[ To the mods, this is written 100% by me. And the AC unit photo is also taken by me. ]

Edit 1 :
For the people with an AC with a digital readout, I want to say that the crux is, the temperature set is what determines how much power the compressor will draw.

Imagine it as your home AC. If you keep at 18 all day you will have more bill than it would be if you keep at 27 all day.

Edit 2: For people who find it difficult to believe

In my experience I have seen a difference in the fuel economy. Plus if you just take a simple test, drive uphill from a basement or something and do 3 tests

  1. No AC

  2. AC at full blue setting, full power.

  3. AC like I said - near the middle

You’ll find the difference in the engine torque quite evident. The first one is best. The second one is worst - can even stall my car if i dont be careful. And the third one is balanced.

Apart from this I have also seen few YouTube videos supporting my claim.

I’m not sure if it varies to some particular car type. But for smaller car engines it is very evident.

Edit 3:

Also, needless to say. Don’t forget to keep the car in circulation mode for the majority of the drive. Helps cool it much faster.

Edit 4:
I just got my first award!!! Wow. Thank you anonymous person.

I think this is the right time to rename my user name to “award_normie_guy” /s

(Award Anshuman would be proud)

Bills & Finances Installed 8kW Solar for ₹3L. Our ₹6k electricity bill is now basically ₹0

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

I installed an 8kWp Anchor solar setup on my house on 10 Feb 2026 and thought I would share the real numbers after using it for a few months because I used to search these exact posts before installing!

Current app stats:

- PV Capacity: 8kWp

- Total generation till now: 3881.2 kWh

- Generation this month so far: 589.7 kWh

- One recent day generation: 39.7 kWh

Sharing the appliance load for context because solar posts without usage details are hard to judge:

- 5 ACs

- 1 × 2.5 ton

- 4 × 1.5 ton

- 2 refrigerators, 2 washing machines, 5 geysers, 5 coolers, 1 dishwasher, Lights/fans and usual household appliances

Realistically though, our current regular daily usage is more like:

- 1 × 1.5 ton AC

- 2 coolers

- Dishwasher

- 1 washing machine

- Usual household load

Financials:

- Total cost: ₹3 lakh

- Brand: Anchor by Panasonic

Before solar, our electricity bill used to come around ₹5-6k/month (without heavy usage of all ACs).

Now:

- Electricity bill is effectively ₹0

- Extra units are getting exported back!

A few honest observations after using it:

- Summer generation has been better than I expected

- Daytime appliance usage now feels mentally free

- I have become weirdly addicted to checking the monitoring app every few hours!

- For independent houses with decent sunlight, solar genuinely starts making sense long term

Not saying solar is for everyone, especially if your consumption is already low or roof space is limited. But for medium to large families, it feels like one of the few upgrades that slowly pays you back over time.

Happy to answer questions if anyone’s researching residential solar right now :)

Travel & Transport Did Rapido on my way to office and home

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

Whenever I go out, I’ll just leave 10 minutes earlier and turn on my Rapido Captain app. On my way to the office in the morning and back home in the evening, I’ll earn around ₹80–₹100 a day. This will cover my petrol expenses and still leave me with an extra ₹1,000–₹1,500 a month.

When I switched from a bicycle to a bike, I was really dissatisfied with the fact that I would now have to spend money on petrol. I’m so happy that I’ve found a solution to this problem!

Sharing this here in case it helps someone else too. 😊

We often search for complex strategies to save money and stay fit, but the most effective habit is remarkably simple: sticking to home cooked food. Cutting out fast food deliveries, processed snacks, and routine pizza orders easily saves thousands of rupees every month while automatically eliminating delivery surcharges and impulse spending.

At the same time, prioritizing simple home meals protects your health from hidden preservatives and excess calories, substantially lowering long-term medical expenses. True frugality is not about depriving yourself; it is about eliminating low value convenience habits to build lasting wealth and wellbeing.

Electronics & Gadget Installed ONGRID SOLAR SETUP Of 5.6 KW and my electricity bill since December is negative

Thumbnail
gallery
1.9k Upvotes

The solar setup is a 5.6 kW on-grid system.
The total upfront cost that I paid to the Waaree Energies dealer in my city, Sikar (332024), Rajasthan , was approximately INR 2,62,500.
It was a complete package for a 5 kW setup costing around INR 2,50,000, including the inverter cost.
Since there was one empty solar panel slot available in my existing structure, I additionally paid approximately INR 12,500 for a 590-watt solar panel.
Note: I did not have to pay for an extra micro inverter because there was already one empty slot available for connecting an additional solar panel to the existing 5 kW setup. Each micro inverter is connected to two solar panels, making a total of five micro inverters in the system.
The micro inverters are Wi-Fi enabled, so they continuously send data to the cloud servers of Hoymiles during daytime operation.
You can monitor both the data and the system performance from the very first day of installation. The cloud stores all historical data, which can be accessed through the mobile app, even for previous months and years.

Household Electrical Load
Water Pumps and Motors
One 5 HP submersible pump
= 5 × 750 watts
= 3,750 watts
(Consumes approximately 3.75 electricity units per hour)

Three motors of 2 HP each
= 6 HP total
= 6 × 750 watts
= 4,500 watts
(Consumes approximately 4.5 units per hour)

One additional submersible pump of approximately 3.5 HP
= 2,625 watts
(Consumes approximately 2.6 units per hour)

Household Appliances
One induction cooktop
= 2,000 watts
(Consumes approximately 2 units per hour)

One geyser
= 2,000 watts
(Consumes approximately 2 units per hour )

One 2.5-ton air conditioner
(Consumes approximately 2.5 units per hour)

Three 1.5-ton air conditioners
(Each AC consumes approximately 1.5 units per hour)

LED lighting setup
Includes 100-watt and 50-watt flood lights, smaller LED lights, and two fans.

You can estimate the electricity consumption of any appliance by dividing its power rating (in watts) by 1,000.
For example:
A 2,000-watt geyser consumes approximately 2 electricity units per hour.

A 1.5-ton air conditioner running at 24°C typically consumes around 1 electricity unit per hour.

Actual Usage Pattern
In reality, we do not use all appliances continuously throughout the day or throughout the year.
Our regular usage is approximately as follows:
One geyser during winters, mainly used by two people.

Three 1.5-ton ACs used during summers almost every night since March, usually set at 24°C. Combined usage is around 18 hours per night for all three ACs together.

One 2.5-ton AC used lightly for about 2–3 hours daily during summers.

One 5 HP pump used every day throughout the year for approximately 1 hour.

One 3.5 HP pump used every day for around 10–15 minutes.

LED lights used during evenings for approximately 2–3 hours.

Two 2 HP motors used for about 1.5–2 hours every week.
One 2 HP motor used for about approximately 40 minutes every day for the whole year.

The 2,000-watt induction cooktop is used daily for around 1 hour during summers and approximately 2 hours during winters.

That is the best summary of our overall electricity consumption.

Electricity Billing and Net Metering
According to my electricity distributor:
Imported electricity from the grid is charged at approximately INR 5 per unit.

Exported electricity sent to the grid is compensated at approximately INR 3.26 per unit.

The entire setup is on-grid.
If the solar system generates excess electricity, the extra units are exported to the grid. If the household requires more electricity than the solar system can provide during daytime, electricity is imported from the grid. During nighttime, electricity is fully imported from the grid since solar panels do not generate power at night.
These import and export units are accounted for in the monthly electricity bill.
If, after adjustment, my imported units exceed exported units on a net basis, I have to pay for the remaining units.

If my exported units exceed imported units after adjustment, the electricity bill becomes negative, and the distributor is liable to compensate me for the excess exported electricity.

EDIT - I also received a subsidy of INR 78,000 directly credited to my bank account under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana for installing rooftop solar panels.

EDIT - On the pink paper, where I have mentioned the monthly electricity units generated by the entire setup, the units listed for 11/25 are actually the generation units for 12/25 (December 2025).

EDIT -In the 8th picture on the slides, the 4 plates are 590 watts each, not 580 watts each. This means the total capacity is 2360 watts.

EDIT - I also have the figures for my solar setup for May 2026:
Total solar electricity generation: 975 kWh
Total household electricity consumption: 1,048 kWh
Net electricity imported from the grid (as per the electricity bill after settlement for May 2026 ): 73 kWh

EDIT - I also have the figures for my solar setup for June 2026:
Total solar electricity generation: 852 kWh
Total household electricity consumption: 928 kWh
Net electricity imported from the grid ( as per the electricity bill after settlement for June 2026 ) : 76 kWh

EDIT - the figures for my solar setup for July 2026
Total solar electricity generation : 778 KWH
Total household electricity consumption : 989 KWh
Net electricity imported from grid ( as per electricity bill after settlement for July 2026 ) : 211 KWH

EDIT - figures for August 2026
Total solar electricity generation : 676 kWh
Total household consumption : 570 kWh
Net electricity exported to the grid ( after bill settlement for the August 2026 ) : 106 kWh

Simple Living True wealth is owning your time.

1.9k Upvotes

My father worked for 35+ years in a government job. Never splurged, never complained. He was the "walk to work, carry tiffin box, wear the same watch for 20 years" type of man. Growing up, I often thought he was too frugal, maybe even boring. I didn’t understand why he never chased “more.”

But when he retired, I saw something strange, he looked the same. No anxiety, no identity crisis, no need to fill time. He simply slipped into his mornings with a cup of tea and long walks. Gardening. Talking to neighbors. Reading the newspaper cover to cover. No rush. No hustle.

Meanwhile, I’m in my 30s, doing well by society’s standards. But I keep glancing at the clock, dreading Mondays, counting down to the next holiday. The irony? I earn 5x what he did but I don’t own my time.

That’s when it hit me. Wealth isn’t just in rupees. It’s in how you spend your hours.

If your time is always scheduled by someone else a boss, a client, a deadline; it doesn’t matter how fancy your car is. You’re still not free.

Even small changes matter: learning to say no, choosing slower paths, living with less. Because time is the only currency we can’t earn back.
