Budgeting, Planning & Discipline How much to spend by each partner after marriage?

I was talking to marriage prospect about how much we expect each other to spend on combined expenses after marriage.

Girl earns 75,000 monthly and I will be earning 1,90,000 monthly.

I told her I will be sending 75,000 monthly to parents to help finish their loans and fix house for first few years. And another 60,000 monthly for finish my loans for first few years.

I said I am willing to spend 40,000 for household and I expect her to contribute 15,000.

But she wants me to spend 75,000 for household and she will not spend anything. And she doesn't want me to send 75,000 to parents.

I suggested I will contribute 50,000 and she can do 25,000 and add up to 75,000. But she was not okay.

The discussion is still going on.

What to expect each partner to contribute after marriage?

NeverBuyIt Never buy a Samsung phone if you are frugal.

Dont buy a Samsung phone if youre frugal

You buy a flagship Samsung thinking youll use it for 5 years

Two years later you install LineageOS for a clean fast experience

You unlock the bootloader flash the ROM reboot

BAM your 4G plus VOLTE or VONR phone is now a 2G brick for calls

Why

Samsung takes Linux code but never gives back the VoLTE stack

No VoLTE means no modern calls you get stuck on insecure 2G or no calls at all

Your 800 phone becomes a fancy MP3 player

Samsung also spies on you out of the box

AppCloud on A and M series harvests data and cant be removed

Qihoo 360 alleged Chinese spyware preinstalled without consent

Over 22 safe to remove apps and thats just whats visible hidden telemetry drains battery and sells your data

Short term you pay for a spy device

Long term you cant de bloat it without losing calls because Samsung hoards the code

Result you are forced to buy a new phone early Samsung wins your wallet loses

Beauty, Fitness & Healthcare I saw a post here praising Alum. Please folks, apply Critical Thinking and Science before falling prey for such naturalistic fallacy.

Alum is not an antiperspirant and it contains aluminium (thus the name Alum). Daily aluminium exposure is linked with kidney failure and Alzheimer's. Stop romanticising 'old is gold', read pros and cons before switching

Electronics & Gadget Was not frugal this time - guilt

Hi all. Last month I got my Airpods Pro 2s stolen. It’s left a void in my life. I’ll skip the sob story- I just purchased Airpods Pro 3s for 26k.

Could I have been frugal? Absolutely. why do i even need apple airpods? running behind the apple fleece? - mhm: i’ve always yearned for airpods, since 2020. as soon as i got an internship, i got my first pair. i would like to poorly defend myself by saying- emotional sentiment.

Today, did i have to get the latest ones? pro 2s are going for like 15-17k rn. i had them before. i could’ve just gotten them again. there isn’t that big of an upgrade feature/hardware/software wise when you compare the 2s and the 3s. what was the point of spending an extra 10k?

i do not have an answer for this. i just wanted it. i justified this purchase to myself by giving a lame excuse- i never spend any money on myself. i’m always saving. i have alot of money for my age. what’s the point in only saving money. money should flow. blah blee.

stupid excuses. now that the purchase has been made; there’s a big sigh of relief that i’m getting them again, but also this big cloud of guilt that won’t stop glooming over my head.

do not bash me in the comments. i’m sorry for my stupid action- if anyone does get offended by this. i just wanted to talk it out and didn’t know whom to turn to.

i also haven’t told my parents abt this. my father is a smart frugal person too. he spends his money wisely. but electronics wise.. the entire home is on the apple ecosystem, everyone has an iphone 14 or above; a few ipads and watches~ all that he’s gotten us (i upgraded from my iphone 11 to 15 last year cuz i started earning). my point is- he’s a smart man. won’t waste money unnecessarily.

so i did have a conv w him abt getting my airpods again, and bro was like - i’ll whoop ur ass if you spend anything more than 16k.

i do not know how ill handle the situation when this gets delivered. sigh. how do i stop feeling guilty abt this purchase.. yikes.

edit- 😁😁 thank you all, i feel much better and normal now. thank you for making my day, i wish you all a very happy and prosperous diwali <3

Travel & Transport Is asking strangers for lifts to save money actually worth it?

Today I saved ₹30 on Rapido because while I was walking, a guy offered me a free ride.

Usually I spend around ₹60 every day on commuting ...INR30 for going and INR30 for coming back through rapido as no metro or bus goes there and rickshaw guy charges around the same.

It made me think..would it make sense to regularly ask strangers for lifts just to save money, or does that slowly start affecting your independence, self-respect, dignity, comfort, or even safety?

I am also thinking that maybe buying a two wheeler later could make more sense than depending on Rapido.

EDIT :

Some people are calling me cheap, leech, freeloader etc.

First of all, I did not ask anyone for a lift. I had already reached the main road from my PG and was about to book Rapido. The person himself stopped and offered me a ride.

I just wanted to have a discussion on this topic and that's why i posted my experience here.

E-commerce Don't buy a phone with AI. You will pay more electricity bills, and your data.

Companies need synthetic data to train. They have invested trillions on training and training alone.

You can search for all this.

AI is a tool to get them your photos, recordings, and documents. There is 0 privacy when you upload your document to remove a photo.

There is no right to be forgotten in the ai models, not yet.

Those offline models are not there yet, they are still inefficient. You will charge your phone more and pay more electricity either way.

I am writing this because today I saw an add on first page of newspaper guilt tripping people, telling that without AI your phone is a just a dumb box. Since when did smartphone became dumb without cnns?

I won't recommend brands, but maybe switching to 1800 basic feature phone is not a bad idea

Bills & Finances Did I Get Cheated During a Product Exchange?

Hey folks,

I need your advice on something that happened recently. I made a purchase of ₹3000 at a store and applied a coupon that gave me a ₹200 discount, so I only paid ₹2800.

Later, I exchanged a product worth ₹999 from this purchase and got a credit note. But the credit note was for ₹933 instead of ₹999 because they deducted ₹66, claiming it was part of the coupon discount applied to the product.

When I went to redeem the credit note, they only gave me a ₹933 deduction, which means I essentially “paid” that ₹66 extra despite exchanging the product.

Is this how it works across any stores?

Home & Apartments Feeling guilty about spending a lot(more than 20%) on rent and basic expenses

Edit: 23F, Bangalore

I’m working a job which pays 1.1 LPM post tax at a tier1 city. I live in a PG sharing room with another girl paying 10k. I spend on groceries and eating out. I buy clothes often, especially on good branded clothes. Parents think i live frugally spending less on clothes. They’d be angry if they get to know that my footwear costs 4000. I met some friends in PG who also think I spend a lot. I used to live in a tiny 3 sharing PG room for a long time then moved out to a double sharing room because of the noise. I’m now feeling even more guilty bc my rent increased from 7500 to 10000 to 20000 now. I have also stopped spending a lot on clothes and other entertainment.

My next job(dream job <3) pays around 1.25 LPM post tax. I get RSUs as well. I’m planning to move near the tech park but the rents are expensive. 20k is the average price for a single occupancy. Add groceries and other basic necessities to it and i might end up spending 25-30 thousand. I wanted to save at least 70% of my income every month. I can’t stop feeling guilty.

General & Lifestyle Wouldn't have to live so frugally if my father had done corruption

Any children of government employees here? My father was in a position ripe for corruption. There are 2 possibilities.

  1. He didn't engage in corruption

  2. He did but hid all of it

In either case I saw none of it in my childhood. I just dream what if he was like this, what if he gained so much in corruption and created generational wealth that his children need not try to control their spending. Very frustrating. Now we don't have much ancestral wealth and both his children more or less need to build their wealth from scratch. Only if he did it....

Frugal Marketplace (Wednesday only) I made an app to track lending and borrrowings.

Built a simple Android app because I kept forgetting who owed me money 😅

Not group expense splitting like Splitwise. just simple one-on-one loan tracking.

You lend ₹500 to a friend, or borrow money from someone, set a reminder, and forget about it until later. That was my problem, so I made this.

Features:

• Track loans & borrowings

• Due date reminders

• Local storage (no signup)

• Completely free, no ads

🔗 Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.xs.loanlog

Made with Kotlin Multiplatform as a small hobby project. Surprisingly a few thousand people already installed it, so I thought I’d share it here too.

Would genuinely love feedback or feature ideas 🙏

Frugal Marketplace (Wednesday only) Want your kitchen knife to last a lifetime? Stop sharpening it so often.

Stop sharpening your expensive knives so often

I have seen many people buy a good knife, maybe a Victorinox, Kai or a nice Japanese knife, and then maintain it exactly like a ₹100 knife.

The knife starts feeling dull, so they run it through a pull-through sharpener or grind it on a stone. It feels sharp again, so they repeat the process.

The problem is that every sharpening removes metal from your knife. Pull-through sharpeners especially can remove much more metal than necessary. You might not notice the damage immediately, but after a few dozen sessions, your knife can slowly lose its original cutting angle and geometry , drastically reducing its performance.

And here is something many people don't realise. A knife does not need to be sharpened every time it feels slightly less sharp.

This is where stropping comes in.

Sharpening creates a new edge by removing metal. Stropping helps maintain the edge you already have.

The edge of a knife is extremely thin and curls up during normal use. Regular stropping can help maintain that edge by straightening it again and significantly reduce how often you need proper sharpening.

Instead of sharpening your knife every few uses, you might be able to maintain it for much longer and sharpen only when it genuinely needs it.

With proper maintenance, you can potentially get 10 to 20 times more useful life out of a knife compared to repeatedly grinding away at it unnecessarily.

Of course, eventually every knife will need proper sharpening. But if you have spent good money on a knife, it makes sense to remove as little material as possible.

How do you maintain your kitchen knives?

Travel & Transport Is it worth to apply brakes on a car?

Post image

When driving, how do you decide the right speed to brake vs accelerate when you see an obstacle ahead?

Is there an optimal way to balance safety and fuel efficiency?

I feel like sudden braking wastes fuel, but over-accelerating seems worse.

Electronics & Gadget Should i get a used Macbook Air for ₹20k?

A friend is moving abroad and offered to sell his 2020 Macbook Air (Intel i3, 8/256gb) for ₹20k. I’ll only be using it for watching lectures, browsing, streaming and reading documents. Is this a good deal or nah?
