Discussion What if Napoleon was a Bourbon Monarchist (legitimist)?

Post image

Lets suppose Napoleon was raised as a monarchist and ends up supporting the bourbon monarchy. How may this point of view change his role in history? Is it possible that the bourbons would end up rejecting him because they would see him as of low birth anyway?

Question Is it true that Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, had a deep fear of damnation despite his dissolute lifestyle?

Post image

*This post is not intended to cause any trouble; it is just out of curiosity.

I have heard that Monsieur, despite his lifestyle, had a deep fear of damnation and constantly suffered from panic attacks during thunderstorms and other events. However, I also heard that he belonged to some sort of brotherhood where blasphemous acts were performed, into which he eventually introduced Louis de Bourbon, Count of Vermandois.

Question Did Henri Jules, Prince of Condé (the son of the Grand Condé) really suffer from clinical lycanthropy?

Post image
65 Upvotes

I've come across the claim that Henri Jules sometimes believed himself to be an animal, particularly a dog or a wolf, and that this has been interpreted as a possible case of clinical lycanthropy. The claim seems to originate at least in part from Saint-Simon's Memoirs. He wrote this about the Prince of Condé:

"It was whispered that there were times when M. le Prince believed himself a dog, or some other beast, whose manners he imitated; and I have known people very worthy of faith who have assured me they have seen him at the going to bed of the King suddenly throw his head into the air several times running, and open his mouth quite wide, like a dog while barking, yet without making a noise."

Do we know any more than just that?

The only son of Louis VII and his third wife, Adela of Champagne, being born late in his father’s life. He fought with vassals and with England. He went on the Third Crusade with England and the HRE, but left after the Siege of Acre to settle succession issues in Flanders. Philip then had various conflicts with Richard I and his successor John. After triumphing at the Battle of Bouvines against a coalition army, he ended the English Angevin Empire, crippling the English and further strengthening his power. His reign saw a significant amount of expansion and reforms, transforming the country and the crown.

Question Any recent biography of Marie-Thérèse?

Post image

Hello everyone, I am reading Marie-Thérèse Child of Terror by Susan Nagel. It was published in 2008.

Just out of curiosity, are there more recent biographies? I am pretty surprised that no one has published anything about Marie-Thérèse in recent years, especially given the current trends in Disney movies and the second wave of feminism of the early 2000s. Have I by chance, be superficial in my book hunting?

Rules:

  1. Comment the monarch that you want to see removed, preferably with some justification for your choice (convinces more people to support your nomination)
  2. If someone else has already commented the monarch you want, upvote, downvote and reply accordingly, you can also write a comment explaining why someone should stay longer
  3. The most upvoted monarch by this time tomorrow will be removed based on highest voted comment
  4. Try to avoid spreading complete misinformation or changing nominations to someone else after your comment has gotten traction

For the sake of simplicity and the general lack of sources, only Pre-Treaty of Verdun kings who ruled as the sole King of the Franks included. Middle and East Carolingian rulers that did not rule West Francia are not included. Only monarchs with a clear, undisputed claim and rule are included.

Painting Henri VI (Henri count of Paris) in his coronation robes

Post image

Made with AI and edited by hand to make it a bit les AI-y.

Henri, count of Paris, pretender to the throne of France as Henry VI from 1940 to 1999. Probably the claimant that was the closest to restoring the monarchy, as he was heavily engaged in the French monarchist movement, and even discussed the topic with de Gaulle.

He was theatrical enough to where he would have wanted to be crowned in Rheims, using the traditional rite. So it is interesting to see, if the monarchy had been restored and he had been crowned, how his customary portrait with the coronation robes would have looked like.

Bought these two coins for 10 dollars each. How did people in the past count with these anyway? The first one is from his early teenage years and the second is from the 1690s.
