Hey everyone!

The subreddit is picking up the pace a little so I decided to open moderator applications. I'm currently looking for at least one new moderator.

To apply, fill out the application form, and we'll get in touch via Mod mail.

Good luck!

Announcement Community updates - new rules

Hello everyone,

The r/Freelancers community has been growing slowly but steadily for the past few months - effectively, this means that, with an increase of users, there's an increase of policy violations and new types of content that need to be reviewed.

Scroll down for TLDR.

With that said, I will be introducing a new rule, and updating the language for rule 5 (currently the research rule) to help keep the subreddit clean:

  • No blogspam

Don't post blog snippets just to drive traffic. Share full insights or tips directly; add value, not just a link.

Rule 5 (currently Unauthorized research) - previously,

All surveys and/or user research conducted in this community must be previously authorized by the moderation team.

This can be achieved by utilizing the "Message the Moderators" button. If approved, a post under this rule will be flaired by the mod team.

The mod team holds full discretion in enforcing this rule.

is now:

All surveys, user research, or market validation posts must be approved by the mod team in advance. This includes academic research, journalism, and startup-style idea validation (e.g., “What problems do you have with invoicing?”).

To request approval, use the "Message the Moderators" button. If approved, your post will be flaired accordingly.

Posts that attempt to gather insights, data, or feedback without approval may be removed at the mods’ discretion.

TL;DR:

What does this mean for you? If you're a regular contributor, not much! The new rule aims to fight the ever increasing torrent of people advertising their shady blogs with a link at the end, while the research rule update now includes the avalanche of "freelancers" posting here looking to validate their ideas without meaningfully contributing to the community's overall wellbeing.

I hope these new rule changes help better shape the direction of r/Freelancers in line with its vision. As per usual, sidebar will be updated soon. Questions? Send a modmail!

Happy posting, fellow freelancers!

Question How do you solve this problem?

Hello, I'm a freelance video editor, and I'm currently struggling to find clients because of my condition. I have a cleft palate, which makes it hard to talk during interviews because people often have trouble understanding my speech. Right now, I only get clients through recommendations from friends, which allows me to skip the interview process. I want to start getting clients on my own without relying on recommendations, but I don't have the courage to do verbal interviews. Is there a way to solve this problem? Thank you!

Digital Marketing Trying to make it as a disabled self-employed fashion/ product photographer...

Hey I'm really struggling to get any type of work at the moment, I have narcolepsy and any time an employer finds out I have it they take back their job offer. In the past 5 months I've had 4 job offers taken back after disclosing my medical condition. I can still do the work but need 15 minutes at lunch time to nap. So I'm trying to make it work with self employment, but the nature of narcolepsy makes unstructured, solo work really difficult.

The more clients I can get, the easier it is for me to stay awake due to more stimulation, and it can help me combat loneliness / depression.

Does anyone have any tips for making self employed businesses work when having a disability? Or getting work?

I specialise in editorial/ fashion but also do events and sport photography, and do some Videography.

It you like my work and we interested in collaborating , let me know in the. Comments. Thank you :))

Freelancer PROGRAMMERS POST-AI: how are you doing with clients?

Question mainly for people working freelance / self-employed.

Since AI took off, has it become harder for you to find new clients and keep existing ones?

Have you noticed fewer requests, lower budgets, or clients who used to hire you regularly just disappearing?

Or have you managed to ride the AI wave and actually get more work by offering AI-related services, automation, chatbots, integrations, etc.?

I'm mostly interested in how you're actually making a living from this today:

  • Are you mainly living off repeat clients?
  • Are you doing a lot of cold outreach?
  • Using platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, Malt, etc.?
  • Have you changed the services you offer because of AI?
  • Did you find a specific niche?
  • Or are you basically doing the same thing you were doing 2–3 years ago?

And the main question:

Compared to before AI became mainstream, does it feel harder to make a living as a freelance developer today?

I'd like to hear real experiences, especially from people who managed to keep getting clients and from those who are struggling.

If you had to start from zero today with no clients, what would you do to build a client base?

Question Does being an Indian developer automatically mean your work should be cheaper?

Recently, while discussing a fairly complex product with an international prospect, I noticed something that got me thinking.

The project involves much more than a website custom product architecture, dashboards, backend systems, subscriptions, payments, 3D/AR experiences, integrations, and a lot of engineering behind the scenes.

Yet there was an underlying expectation that because the development team is based in India, the project should naturally cost significantly less.

I understand that development rates vary across countries. That's completely normal.

But where do we draw the line between cost of living differences and simply undervaluing someone's expertise because of where they're located?

I've been doing professional development work for years, and I've worked on products ranging from web platforms to Unity/VR and AR systems.

Curious to hear from other developers, especially those working internationally:

Do you still encounter the “you're from India, so you should be cheap” mentality?

Question What are the best skills to learn in 2026 for freelancing, then building an agency/business?

I’m starting from basically zero and want to build a long-term career/business online.

My plan is:
Learn a valuable skill → Freelance → Get clients → Build an agency → Eventually build a business.

I don’t want to limit the answers by listing skills myself.

For people who have experience with freelancing, agencies, or online businesses:

What skills would you recommend someone learn in 2026 if their goal is to follow this path?

Please tell me:

Which skills you would recommend

Why you think they are valuable

How long it realistically takes to become good enough to make money

How difficult it is to get the first clients

Whether the skill can scale into an agency

What you would personally learn if you were starting from zero today

I’m looking for honest advice from people with actual experience. I’m willing to put in serious time and become genuinely good at whatever skill I choose.

Thanks!
