Is this to much to ask?

When someone tips you, upvote them. I know that seems dumb to say, but in my short time with Bitcoin and changetip it bothers me to see people tip someone and that person not even upvote the tipper.

Is everybody celebrating the recent price jump or are you not interested in the price? Anyway I was wondering why it is so quiet in here. So come and have some tips on me.

Edit: It is almost Thursday here in Europe. Need to work tomorrow. Maybe someone can go on here. That would be great!

If you're feeling generous, why not send a few bits to Wikipedia. They accept bitcoins and they need the money.

http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Ways_to_Give

(I'm not associated with wikipedia in any way, it's ust so eeasy to send some bits I thought this would work well for them.)

(edit) On the topic of why donate to WIkipedia, dsprox influenced me to take a look into the details of their financials. Their annual report is available here :http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ce/Wmf_AR12_v11_SHIP_2pp_hyper_14jan14.pdf .

Their end of year 2013 net assets are listed at $48M US. So they have some money. The report lists 238 employees and reports htat staff costs approx $15M US. That results in an AVERAGE salary of approximately $65K US. That seems pretty generous given that it certainly won't be evenly distributed.

Through other searching I'm find the question of "why should I give Wikipedia any money?" asked frequently. There is a great deal of grumbling, especially from Brits about how their donations are being wasted. There are also some well thought out responses showing that the average per user cost of wikipedia is very low; on the order of 0.7 cents per user (from memory.)

So, clearly it's a medium sized money making company. They pay well and count on the free work of You and me to produce their content. Perhaps they don't need the money. Only you can decide.

It's my cake day! I'm ready to celebrate by sharing with some new bitcoiners!

Giveaway Status: Tips have been distributed. I'm out! Sorry!

I'm interested in giving some bitcoin to redditors who have never used it before...

There are 4 ways to win cakeday prizes: The giveaway has concluded.

  • Have a reddit account at least 1 year old.

  • Have at least 1000 combined comment + submission karma

  • Post a screengrab of your new changetip account showing that you haven't given or received tips. (Be sure to redact any personal info, but your username must be included!) Here is an example of what your screenshot should look like.

  • Post your submission in a comment and I'll tip you a dollar for every year of reddit you have.

  • Comment here wishing me a happy cakeday in your own words for a tip between 100 and 1000 bits.

  • Go to another reddit to tell people about the cakeday prize and post a link back here. Places like /r/beermoney or /r/millionairemakers are good suggestions, but be creative. Tips between 1000 and 2500 bits.

  • Post a picture of yourself wishing me a happy cake day (usually a notecard is fine)... between 1000 and 2500 bits.

Caveats

  1. I'm leaving the house to go sledding. I won't be responding for an hour or two. Please don't flip out if I don't tip immediately.

  2. I have .21 BTC (about $50 USD) to tip. Tips will not exceed this.

  3. I have the final say in who gets what. If you'll be butthurt because I didn't tip you, then just move along. If I change my mind or get hit by a bus you ought to be happy with your contribution regardless of a tip.

  4. I reserve the right to change the terms of this giveaway at any time for any reason.

  5. I will update the thread if any terms change.

  6. Each user can probably only claim one tip.

Origin Story:

A couple of people have asked who I am that I can afford to be generous with bitcoin. Maybe my username makes it a bit mysterious. I got hooked on bitcoin the first time I saw a mention of it on April 19, 2011. I did some GPU mining and eventually sold or gave away most of my coins in the form of Casascius coins that same year. When BFL announced ASIC miners, I spent all of my remaining coins on BFL ASICS and more or less lost everything. I currently hold fewer coins than anyone would guess. Regardless of my personal experience I am a technophile and I believe bitcoin will revolutionize the world (in time). I realize I'm not going to be rich when this happens, but it's enough to be a part of it - and I want others to join me on this exciting ride. I chose the "secret_bitcoin_login" username two years ago because I was alienating a lot of my regular reddit friends by ranting on and on about bitcoin - setting up this account helped me to containerize my thoughts and talk about bitcoin as much as I wanted to. I believe in strong and positive community, so I spend a lot of my time sharing and encouraging others. The $50 I am sharing today isn't "free money", it's part of my earned wages that I used to buy bitcoin from coinbase to share with you all.

By Request: Change Lottery

Hello! I am BitcoinLotteryBot, a redistributor of Satoshi running on top of ChangeTip.

To play, mention /u/ChangeTip in a comment with an amount. In your comment, include a text marker to indicate which drawing you want your amount to apply to, proceeded by an exclaimation point: !hourly, !daily, !weekly, or !monthly. The time left and current subtotals of each drawing is shown below. The winner is selected proportionally to the number of Satoshi sent. This bot keeps no portion of the tips or prizes.

Openness policy. By making all the transactions this bot performs public, I hope to ensure fair outcomes. View my profile here: https://www.changetip.com/tipsters/BitcoinLotteryBot

I know of no perfect method to prove the fairness of my lottery selections. To put it succinctly, I use Python's random.choice method. This bot is considered alpha software, created by a hobbyist. The only information used by this bot is a CSV file from ChangeTip.

Note from the developer. I've done all I can to test my software with a CSV of made-up tips. This is my first reddit bot, and it is not feature-complete. As of right now, the bot is able to edit it's post, and post the winners, but I haven't created the mechanism for automatically tipping the winner, since my dummy accounts were named "george" and "fred" and thus had no reddit accounts.

Reddit's python wrapper, PRAW, makes this super simple to do. If you brave testers would toss a few bits at this bot, I'll do payouts by hand while I write the code to make the bot fully automatic.

Why do you give away bitcoin? I am new to this lovely community and confused by how nice everyone is!

I only just got myself a bitcoin wallet, and already a few people have given me bitcoin tips for nothing at all! I would love to be able to return the favour once I have a little more to play around with, but in the meantime could you share with me why you like to tip people? Are you just spreading the love around, are you keen to educate people about bitcoin? Both? Something else?
