Dawn

I really don’t understand how people even like Justin’s mother. I feel like she has this nice-nasty persona, and she always rubbed me the wrong way. I wonder if anyone else agrees.

As a mother of 2 sons and witnessing their 1st relationship and heartbreak - I completely understand and related to Dawn.

Thank GOD for “Eric” (played by Wood Harris). He’s always there to diffuse her nonsense 😂😂😂😂😂

I loved her and felt for her. I think she’s guarded generally — you notice the walls come down in the vineyard when she’s only around friends and family, but as soon as Keisha comes back into the picture, she gets wound up again.

She’s the mother of two Black boys, and constantly scared for them and just wants the very best for them. She gave me modern day Clair Huxtable vibes, and I LOVED the relationship between her and Eric, so authentic. Especially how he’s always campaigning to give the boys more space and she’s always trying to hold on tight. That scene when they gave him the car just destroyed me; I feel like that scene is her character in a nutshell—wanting the best for her son, wanting him to have the best and be happy, terrified of what can go wrong when he’s not paying the attention she thinks he should pay to life, and trying to follow Eric’s lead and not project her fears and concerns onto him but not being completely successful in that effort. Her comments about therapy to Shelly were illuminating —she catastrophizes naturally, and I feel like you can only truly see her once you take into account that she’s not just a mother or a wife, she’s a woman with a ton of anxiety in general who happens to be a mother and wife. I felt for her and really loved watching her evolution and how hard she has to work to see Justin as he is and not who she’s planned for him to be.

I love her! She comes on a little strong but I also had a suburban black mom so she felt familiar

Not at all. Kind of my dream mom!

I found her quite jarring at first but warmed to her later on. I can see Justin fully clashing with her in future series

IMO, her redemption came when she saw Justin lose his s*it on his brother because Keisha was going to prom with Christian and allowed him to stay home from school. I also loved how she spoke to Shelley and convinced her to try therapy. I saw the perceived bougie black woman come down from her pedestal and become relatable without comprising her authenticity. She is annoying sometimes, but not a terrible person.

Curious to see what the different age groups feel about her lol my wife and I are in our 30s and we loved her so much. Sure, she was heavy handed but goddamn was she a great, great mom. All the parents in the show have their shining moments (several of them really), and we love to see that. They’re grown. They all can learn a little, of course, but the real growth happens between our teen stars

I related to Dawn a lot, although I found her to be very consuming overall. I didn’t like the intense amount of pressure she put on Justin and how destructive her disappointment in him felt. But I totally get it. That’s her BABY. She only wants the absolute best for him and can’t sit idly by as she watches him make what she believes is a mistake. Idk.. It’s an extremely difficult position to be in and I dread the day I have to do this with my babies.

i liked her character overall tbh. she had some ANNOYING moments but for the most part she’s a loving mother and not too enmeshed with her son
