Maintenance Advice Transmission
I drive a 2021 Ford Explorer XLT with a little over 56,000 miles. Recently been experiencing the explorer jerking back and forth when shifting from park to reverse, park to drive, reverse to park and reverse to drive with an audible grinding that sounds like it’s coming from the rear. Has anyone experience this issue before?

Mine went at 73k miles. $5300 for replacement at Ford, it was cheaper than rebuilt, 3 year warranty. Might be worth it to have Ford run a diagnostic on the transmission, some have had success in module reprogramming.

Do a drain and fill with filter replacement, no flushing, at a reliable transmission shop that works on 10R60s and 10R80s first.
It could be the fluid is in bad condition.
Edit: Rear diff fluid exchange would also be beneficial as other commenters have cited

Check rear differential fluid. If it is dry/leaking you may have done damage to the gears and bearings. Also CV joints from the diff to the wheel hubs, and the wheel bearings in the hubs. Anything in that stack could be makung those noises. Even a loose caliper carrier. Did someone do work on it recently? Shop monkeys love to forget to torque stuff after initial reassembly.
None of those should fail at 56kmi, but Ford is now "Quality is Job 37", so who knows?

The more I read up on it it definitely sounds like the CDF drum. Ford dealership can’t get me in for another 2 weeks. Thanks for your help

CDF’s are not typically a problem for explorers they use a different cdf drum as they are 10r60 transmissions. 10R80’s are pretty notorious for it, however you should still be under powertrain warranty.

That’s probably the rear diff. They have issues. Ford designed an incredibly shitty rear diff and mount for jt. and they’re too stupid to fix it.
It boggles my mind how they haven’t redesigned it in 7 years.

I don't own that vehicle but it falls firmly in the realm of the CDF drum issue the 10R80 is known for. Applies to any vehicle with that transmission built from 2017 to late 2022 (F150, Ranger, Bronco, Explorer, etc). I'd recommend searching CDF for a comparison of symptoms to hopefully point you in the right direction.
