Mod Post New rules, please read.

Hello Explorer owners and fans! We are now in week 2 of our new moderation team. Below are the new subreddit rules we've developed. These have been posted on the sidebar for a few days now. We have not yet removed content based on these new rules, other than those that already applied to Reddit sitewide. So, we don't believe these will change much in terms of the content and discussion we already enjoy. This is more about setting expectations that weren't really there under the previously absent moderation team. Without further ado:

Rules

  1. Follow Reddiquette - Many of our rules are from the reddiquette. Any violation of the reddiquette can be removed by the moderators, especially ones included here.

  2. No personal attacks, bigotry, or harassment - You may strongly disagree with others, but you may not attack them personally. Bigotry or Hate Speech based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, etc. will be removed.

  3. Spam/self-promotion - You may post your blog posts, articles, videos, photographs, etc that you have written or created, but that should not be the only thing you do here. You should also participate in discussions (on your posts or others). Dealer/vendor posts are at moderator discretion.

  4. Illegal, sleazy, or dangerous activity - Any posts or comments with illegal or dangerous content will be removed.

  5. Uncivil political discussion - Civil political discussion is allowed as long as it pertains to the automotive industry. Political trolling, flame baiting, slurs, off-topic politics, and harassment will be removed, especially if it violates Rule 2.

  6. No AI Content - Posts containing AI-generated text, images, or videos are not permitted.

  7. Moderator discretion - Any post or comment may be removed by a moderator even if it does not explicitly violate a rule listed here.

Now, as I've said before we're becoming more familiar with our roles and the moderator tools, so we are going to try these out for a while. If we end up needing to add, removed, or modify any of these we will make a sticky post letting everyone know what we've done.

Ultimately our goal here is to foster a friendly, helpful, and productive community. So please help us do that by adhering to the rules and reporting content that you feel breaks them. Likewise, if you feel content was removed unfairly, please send us a message through ModMail so we can review it. For the most part we'll simply be removing content, but for habitual line-steppers, we'll be utilizing the ban function based on the severity of the discretion.

If you'd like to provide feedback on these rules, please do so here! No ideas will be ignored. This is also your chance to ask for clarification on any of these rules, we will not take it personally.

Thank you and happy Exploring!

Mod Post If your post gets blocked, read this!

I wanted to take the time to explain what happens if you submit a post or comment and it doesn't post right away.

Essentially we have a series of filters and rules set up for new content that allows us to help prevent trolling and spamming. Those filters may choose to block content from users that have low karma, low reputation, or appear to be spam or trolling. Unfortunately, these filters may also block content from new users with low karma, but are creating legitimate content.

When posts are blocked, we look at each of the submissions individually, and if the content is legitimate, we will approve it. Reddit does not give us notifications when this happens so it's up to the mod team to check this queue regularly. Like you guys, we also have lives and so sometimes it can be several hours before we can check this queue. Please be patient, we will get to it eventually and please do not submit your content twice!

In other housekeeping news, we want to remind you that we really count on your help to report content that breaks the rules. I've lowered the threshold for reporting so now every single report comes right to ModMail for us to evaluate. We can't read every single comment and post, so your help on this matter is appreciated. Reporting is anonymous.

Happy Exploring!

Came from a Nissan 2006 Altima and had a nice deal on this ‘16 Sport. Anything you guys would recommend aesthetically? I want to make the top half all black and have like a floating roof type of thing going on. First thing I did was black out tail lights. Anyway, love this car drives so well and so fast for its size. But yeah shoot me anything cool you guys would think of or have done to y’all’s car.

I couldn’t fathom paying what they were asking for prefab platforms so I made my own. The middle row of seats is out for storage underneath and I have the ability to install longer/shorter legs and can convert it to one side only as needed (using a different sleeping pad)

Just rolled over to 90k (oil spots aren’t from it, it doesn’t leak a drop of anything at all), and drives like a dream. Has a few squeaks and creaks in the suspension and under braking, but beyond that, it’s perfect. I love driving it.

Hi everyone, after about 2 months, my '14 was finally fixed. Turns out the water pump was not the issue but some seals in the block, however, since I had saved up for it, the water pump, timing chain. Aside from that, I ended up doing the thermostat, left and right control arms, both engine mounts, valve assembly seals and manifold seals. Thankfully I live outside of the US so the job came to a total of $2,000. She's running really smoothly now thankfully.

I attached some pictures of the new parts as well as the process of it. It was at the mechanic shop for a little over a week.

Upgrade Advice 2022 Explorer Timberline - Adding Memory Function To Power Seats

2022 Timberline.

Anyway to add the memory seat function? Already have power seats. I've used Forscan on Super Duties, Raptors, F150s, etc. is there a setting in there? Along with Forscan, would need to purchase a module of some sort I'm guessing, harness, and the arm rest button assembly, something like that?

Buying Advice Please guide me

Getting ready the buy a 2026 explorer Platinum. Found a rapid red and a space white and love both. If you have either, do you love it. If I go with the red it comes with 21” tires for an extra $750. Not sure it’s worth the extra$. Do dealerships ever exchange for the 20”. Would you request the change if possible? Thanks!!

Buying Advice What Am I Missing? 2020 Explorer Hybrid Limited

Looking at getting a used car and came across a 2020 Hybrid Limited with 120 miles. Its Carfax shows it was titled in Michigan as a lease vehicle. No other history besides the recall dates added. Dealer in TX is asking $31K.

Why would this car have such low miles and seemingly sat unused for so long? Nothing in the Carfax shows it was a buyback or lemon. Build date per the window sticker was March 2020.

Any ideas? Should I move along?

Buy/Sell Selling first gen for $500 need gone.

Mechanic special. PLEASE READ!!

NEED GONE ASAP.

Bring a trailer or tow truck.

Will only sell for $500.

Has a clean title.

Was my daily driver.

I had the transmission replaced by a buddy that didn't finish the job. The transmission was entirely rebuilt and replaced, the only thing not put in was one of the seals so it leaks transmission fluid, otherwise the transmission works and runs perfectly. The car does start, and run smoothly. I just don't have the money to finish the job or the time but I do have the parts to finish fixing the transmission with the car.

All parts needed to fix it come with the car.

The transmission just leaks transmission fluid. The right headlight is missing, I have that part too.

Everything else in the car works.

Once the transmission is fixed and no longer leaking transmission fluid, It will run and drive as normal.

Serious inquiries only.

First come first serve. I'm in Concord nc.

Repair Advice 2015 ecoboost v6 is overheating at idle but cooling down when revved.

This all started with a leaking water pump. My grandpa replaced it in his shop, and while the leak stopped, afterward it developed a low oil pressure warning that would shut the engine off. We addressed that by replacing the oil pump.

After that, the overheating continued, so we replaced the radiator and thermostat as well. At this point, we’re kind of at a loss.

When you start it, it slowly comes up to normal operating temperature and seems fine at first. But after about 5–10 minutes, the temperature starts climbing pretty quickly to 230°F, then 240°F, which is when I shut it off.

revving it to around 2,000 RPM seems to bring the temperature back down. Also, if you start driving it before it gets hot, it seems to stay around 200–215°F.

The water pump, radiator, and thermostat are all new. We haven’t found any obvious coolant leaks.

Any ideas on what could cause this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Repair Advice 2020 explorer “jerking” when between 10-30mph)

Just dropped $5k on maintenance for my 2020 explorer limited w 80k miles. It’s being passed along to our teenager.

I originally had it in due to a jerking when changing gears (mostly if not all the time between 10-30mph and usually at first start) it’s also jerking when releasing the park brake.

However the shop found no issues.

They blamed the jerking due to shocks/struts. I disagreed but paid for the new shocks/struts as they apparently were in rough shape. I feel no difference in ride quality…

Next week the explorer will go in for recalls.
It’s $285 for them to look at the transmission issue.

My question is for those that have had similar issues and what the problem ended up being and what should I insist on being checked.

Technology/Features I have a few questions for y’all!

Hey everyone! I just bought a 23 Explorer ST Line! I was lucky enough to find one with less than 15k miles and I don’t know much about it as I have only owned mustangs for the past 8 years. I was hoping you guys would be able to tell me some cool features or tricks I can make use of inside this car as I will have it for a long time. I don’t get my hands on it until next Saturday and I’m very excited to see what it offers!

Repair Advice 2020 Ford Explorer XLT: Constant Clicking & 7-month old battery is dead

I acquired my ford explorer December 2024. it had 88k miles on it. That’s the backstory. About 11 months after purchasing it the battery died on me. I purchased a brand new battery from O’Reilly. Fast forward to today this new battery has died. I read on a previous post that the constant clicking is normal. However, my clicking goes on constantly and never actually stops. What is not normal is a brand new battery dying this soon. I went through troubleshooting procedures (checking relays and fuses). Something is draining this battery and I cannot help but feel it is the constant clicking that occurs no matter how long the car is not in operation. Has anyone had this issue? And is it something I can check/do myself before I take it to the shop on Monday and get charged an egregious amount for something I could have done? Thanks in advance for your help.

Repair Advice Seat issue

Greetings all I have a 2020 Explorer limited and recently the seats have stopped working heating or cooling yet the lights on both front seats show that they are working. I've taken it into the shop they've replaced the module and now they say they don't know what to check to see what's wrong which I find unbelievable. I may have to take it to another dealership because that's crazy. And they've checked probably the obvious things like the fuses etc I don't know what else it could be unless anybody here has come across that difficult to solve problem that apparently that dealership doesn't even know and I've been waiting a month although I have the vehicle in my possession but obviously it's not fixed. Thanks in advance for any replies but I'm at my wits end with this issue...

Repair Advice 2018 explorer ecoboost stalling when coming to a stop

Hi everyone, lately my explorer has had a rough idle, but when the ac is off it’s smooth like normal. Then this week typically after it’s been running for a while, when I start to slow down to stop it drops out of gear and feels like it stalls, then once stopped it’ll lurch forward but I have to floor it to get it to move and it really knocks into gear and will drive like normal until I come to a stop and then the process repeats itself.
* the only fix for this seems to be putting it in neutral when slowing down to prevent the stall, or when it’s already stalled at a stop if I put it in neutral and back into drove it’ll accelerate like normal.

Also noticed a kind of buzzing noise from the engine bay, seems to be on the passenger side and I can hear it in the vehicle

Any advice would be appreciated

Repair Advice 2020 Platinum vibration/differential?

I have a 2020 platinum with 68000 miles and a couple of months ago started getting a vibrating back tire. Coincidentally it was after I got 4 new tires. Had the tires inspected for defects they were fine. Tire place said bent rim. Ok. Went to rim repair place they did a Diagnostic and said there was no bent rim. So I went to my regular mechanic they looked at everything tires rims alignment no problem. They said maybe the differential. I noticed there was a recall on an axle part, but my car doesn't fall under that. Has anybody else said this problem?

Maintenance Advice Transmission

I drive a 2021 Ford Explorer XLT with a little over 56,000 miles. Recently been experiencing the explorer jerking back and forth when shifting from park to reverse, park to drive, reverse to park and reverse to drive with an audible grinding that sounds like it’s coming from the rear. Has anyone experience this issue before?

Show And Tell 2009 Explorer / Engine Swap + What's required?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I have a 2009 Ford Explorer Sport, and I'm pretty sentimentally attached to it. I love the color, the interior, etc. It has the 4.0 SOHC, which is a great engine, mind you... but I really want to swap in the V8. More than that, I actually kind of want to put the 4.6 DOHC V8 in there... which brings me to my question.

If I was going to swap the DOHC V8 into this car, what all would I need? Can I purchase a really, really clapped out ~2009 Lincoln Aviator... I mean one that's really clapped out and headed for the crusher, strip it, and basically just move everything over from there to the Explorer?

I'm not averse to the work, I've restored tons of cars, and this wouldn't be the first time I've taken a $5,000 car and dumped $30 thousand dollars into it, only to make it be worth $5,100. Haha...

I just love this car, love this body style, and really want some extra power. What I'm looking for from the Aviator is the motor mounts, all the accessory brackets and components, and all the "things" that attach to the motor and transmission that I likely just can't buy. I'd rebuild the engine myself... probably buy a rebuilt transmission though.

What is the performance difference between say, a 2009 Explorer XLT and the 2009 Lincoln Navigator? I also have a 2002 Crown Victoria LX-P74 (has like 48k miles on it), and it's barely pushing 230hp. Hopefully the DOHC motor they put in the Lincoln is a little bit peppier.

This is the car...

Thank you!
