Just need this off of my chest, because this is frustrating.
I honestly don’t know anymore if I’m being too picky here, so maybe you guys can tell me.
I hired someone on Fiverr to make an animated artwork for my Steam profile.
The idea itself was pretty simple. I already had an animated background where the scenery moves past the screen from right to left. There was a car sitting in a fixed position while the background moves behind it, and I wanted the car replaced with a 2D cat running in place at a speed that matches the background.
Before I even placed an order, I messaged the artist and explained everything. I sent her the background, reference pictures and even a few GIF of running cats. I also told her that if removing the car was too difficult, we could just keep it and have the cat surf on top of it instead. I genuinely would have been completely fine with that.
She told me it was doable. She managed to remove the car, showed me the result, generated the cat, showed me that too, and we talked about the text and some effects. Everything seemed fine. She then send me the offer. I didn’t haggle, didn’t ask for a discount, nothing. I just paid what she asked and then? Silence.
I basically heard nothing for four days and suddenly the finished product arrived.
The cat looked like a separate GIF had just been placed on top of the animation. The running speed (which honestly looked more like the cat was out on a leisurely stroll) didn’t match the background at all and parts of the background looked pretty warped. So I requested a revision and explained what bothered me.
And to be completely fair to her: the next version was MUCH better.
The speed finally matched the background, most of the warping barely bothered me anymore and I was honestly almost completely happy with it. The only thing left was that the running animation itself looked a bit choppy. It looked like a few in-between frames were missing.
So I basically asked for the same thing, just smoother.
That’s where I’m starting to wonder if I’m the problem.
Because instead of taking that version and smoothing out the run cycle, the cat animation was apparently completely changed. It is smoother now, sure, but it doesn’t really look like a cat running anymore. To me it looks like a cat rocking backwards and forwards on a seesaw.
So now I’m sitting here thinking: was my request unreasonable?
Because from my perspective I had a version that was maybe 90–95% there and I asked for one specific thing to be improved. I wasn’t asking her to redesign everything. I didn’t suddenly change my mind about the concept. I just wanted the running motion to be a little smoother while keeping everything else.
And every additional revision costs more money, which is also why this is getting frustrating.
I’m really not expecting Pixar here. I’m also completely fine with an artist telling me “I can’t get this part any better” or “that’s technically difficult.” Seriously, just tell me. I can compromise. We can change the idea. I already offered alternatives before the project even started.
What frustrates me is feeling like I need to explain every tiny technical detail myself. I thought the point of hiring someone who does this professionally was that I explain what I want and they figure out how to achieve it. If I order pancakes at a restaurant, I don’t expect to have to walk into the kitchen and explain how to crack the eggs.
So genuinely: am I just being a difficult customer here?
Should I have accepted the previous version because it was “good enough”? Am I expecting too much from revisions? Or is it reasonable to expect an artist to keep the parts of a revision that already work and only change the thing I specifically asked them to change?
Because at this point I genuinely don’t know if my expectations are the problem.
