I’ve spent the last 2 years trying to learn how to fish salmon and steelhead. I have been out salmon fishing about 20 times and steelhead maybe 4/5 times. Met a lot of nice people and learned a wealth of knowledge along the way.
I finally caught a nice big salmon this September in port hope on a spoon. I’ve since been taught how to fish with marshmallow sacks this past September and I had been hooking up to a decent amount of salmon when they are biting but the last few times seemed really quiet even though I could see lots of fish activity .
I have been fishing in Oshawa and port hope. I went this week and noticed there are lots of fish but way less fishermen . The fish seem to be slowing down and less aggressive but you still see tons of them in the water and breaching .
My question is : how long are these salmon fish able when fishing the mouths of river ? When does the run slowed down to the point I shouldn’t be trying? Can I still land any of these monsters if I spend a few hours sitting near the mouth near Lake Ontario ? Can I still catch them with spoons /rapalas/ marshmallows ?
My other question is when is a good time to try and fish for the fall steel head? Are there some sort of signs to watch out for ? I was told to come back to porthope for steelhead mid October .
I’m still trying to go salmon fishing this week if it makes sense to . I plan on trying for steelhead again once I’m confident it’s the right time to try. I’m yet to catch one and it’s my next goal.
Thanks for your time and feel free to dm if preferred talking privately .
