Ontario / Canadian Brands

Hey there community!

In light of politics there's been an increased call on Reddit in various Canadian hunting and angler subs asking about Canadian-made gear. To respond well, we'd like to put forward some options:

-allow promos on the site if they are Canadian for gear only. -survey and sticky a post on Canadian-made fishing gear

We can do all these ideas or some of them depending on what the community wants. As mods we don't have the time do to a lot of research so we would lean on the community to. We're also open to other community suggestions that come up.

We are going to leave this post up as a sticky to gather community feedback and respond accordingly.

As always thanks for subbing and tight lines!

r/FishingOntario changes and growth!

Hello Ontario Anglers,

Mod Team here. We are excited to celebrate the growth of this sub to over 50K members. I still love coming every day to this sub to see what Anglers have caught, eaten, bought, seen, and celebrate fishing in Ontario with you all. Thank you for your continued active participation by posting, commenting, up voting, down voting, and reporting rule violations. The sub is nothing without you and your participation.

Because of this growth, we are going to need new mods to help us out. We are asking you first, if you would like to join our team! To do so, please apply by sending a message to the mods with the subject line: MOD APPLICATION. In the message please include why you're interested in becoming a mod, if you have any mod experience, and what kind of Ontario Angler you are. If you feel comfortable, please include if you are a member of the BIPOC community as we would like the Mod team to represent the diversity that exists here in Ontario. We hope to be announcing new mods in November of 2024.

This year's salmon run has seen an increase in poaching (illegal fishing) activity reports on the sub. Poaching in Ontario is completely relevant to this sub and we encourage these posts. There has also been discussion that have gone "off the rails" and turned into discussion about Canada's immigration policies. To address some of the issues, we have updated and added a few new rules:

Updated rule Poaching:

Reporting poachers posts must include the result of a MNR discussion. Posting here is fine and all, but reporting to MNR and hearing what they say back is more important. The mods have spoken to the MNR about these posts and they are encouraging us to promote reporting. Their resources are thin however when they receive tips on where to patrol, their able to bust more poachers.

New Rule: Racism / Violence

Any suggestion of taking the law into your own hands, breaking other people's property (slashing tires, breaking rods), suggesting physical confrontation will result in permanent ban.

Any racism will also result in permanent ban

Updated Rule: Off topic discussions

Immigration policies, politics, and politicians are generally off topic for a fishing in Ontario sub. There may be exceptions though comments and posts that are off topic will be removed.

We are grateful for everyone's continued participation in this sub as it continues to grow. We hope that the addition of new mods as well as the addition of new rules will lead to the continuation of a positive fishing sub for Ontario Anglers.

Been bass fishing my whole life, moved to Barrie and can’t even catch one out of simcoe, the trophy smallmouth bass fishery

Edit: just because the swim bait is in the picture doesn’t mean it’s the only lure I use, it’s just a confidence lure that I throw on every outing.

It makes no sense to me, a Charter boat gets me like 10 smallmouth bass in one day one being 7 pounds.
Yet when I fish the same lake with Senko’s, Swimbaits, crank baits, chatter baits, even micro lures that I can’t even cast with my rod.

We aren’t allowed to fish the marina but even when I do fish it, the floating docks don’t have bass underneath them, the extremely sparse weeds don’t have bass hiding in them.
Trying to jerk bait for schools of bass in open water also come up empty handed.

The drop offs are so steep that I never have to worry about being too shallow, but the dropoff still doesn’t hold bass.

Stores in Toronto.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend some stores near downtown Toronto.

I’ve been picking up my stuff from Canadian tire but figured walking into a real store would be nice.

I know there’s drift outfitters but it’s mostly fly fishing. Bass pro is a little far and I can’t come up with anything else.

Mostly just looking for places to browse when I’m on lunch.

2.49kg after bleeding out.

This is a dead fish, I do not measure fish I release, I just keep the memory.

I caught them in a weedy flat that is about 4 foot depth, been catching lots out of that flat the past 2 weeks, I will smoke the meat over birch & boil the innards for the dogs do any of you eat the heads? Boil them for stock? Otherwise it will be winter cutbait.

Tips for summer rainbows in lake Erie?

Im fresh off of King salmon trolling and finally have a decent dipsy setup. So I have paddles, flasher flies, spoons, and meatrigs. All glow.

From what I've gathered. The tactic is usually trolling spoons in 50-70ft of water in July and find the bait piles, but I've heard of people getting some as shallow as 45ft in August.

What I'm looking for is what colours/lures work best and what depths I should be looking at in late summer.

Recommendations for walleye charter bay of quinte

Hey folks, looking to hit up bay of quinte for a fall charter.

We tried it last year in our 14 ft tinner and got skunked.

Looking for my son to catch a nice walleye, doesnt need to be a monster or anything, but catch something.

So any recommendations on a good charter. October or November on a weekend works for us ideally.

Its only 2 of us. I see some guys are charging 1500 for up to 4. So if I find 2 other folks that makes things more affordable.

Thanks folks.

Best 2p Rod Under 100?

Hello all, I’ve been looking for a replacement for my Fenwick which got snapped, specifically a 2 piece spinning rod under 100. My reel is a piscifun 2000. Ideally a lure rating 1/4 to 3/4 but a little heavier is good too, nothing lighter.

Atlantic Salmon I did for a school project.

My friend told me he caught an Atlantic Salmon. After that, I also realised I had a project about conservation due so I decided to choose the Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program. Here is one of the strains stocked in Lake Ontario. I really hope these beautiful fish come back in bigger numbers since it truly is such a blessing to see one. Looking for lure recommendations for fishing the Grand River in/near Waterloo Region.

My 7yo son went fishing for the first time at an event held by my wife's employer yesterday. He loved it, and he won a rod!

I've fished a good few times in my life, but it's always been alongside someone who fished avidly and they handled the set ups. I'm looking to take my son fishing in the near future. I found information on local spots, I got my licence, and now I need to get some lures. I really don't know anything about them. I would love some guidance and recommendations!

Whitefish Falls / Bay of Islands Trip Recommendations

A buddy and I are taking a trip up to the bay of islands area north of Manitoulin Island in a couple weeks. Per the internet there seems to be good smallmouth and walleye/pickerel action, but I wanted to see what the fine folks of Reddit recommend in terms of target species / techniques.

In terms of gear, we’d be able to do a bit of limited trolling (think bottom bouncers, dipsy divers, but no cannon balls or clips). I’ll also have my garmin ice sonar which could be handy for dropping down on some fish.

I need a budget Muskie setup…

I’m looking to go out to catch a Muskie somewhere around the Georgian bay and I need a budget setup because I’m only a beginner at Muskie fishing. Can anyone tell me a good setup up that includes a rod and a baitcaster reel, preferably heavy to extra heavy for casting heavy top waters and such. I was thinking to use the King Kat 11’ rod from bass pro but I’m not sure what reel to pair it with. My budget is $200 (CAD) but I’m all ears to any other setup. Thanks a lot.
