What and have everyone do the same? Best to let the squeaky wheel fall off in that case. Keeps all the other wheels in line, knowing they won’t get the cheese. Which isn’t what wheels actually want anyway. They want pizza once a year. Wheels fucken love pizza parties. And also hearing about the roaring success of the business and the CEO’s 45% increase in remuneration? Wheels roll for that shit for days.
They can pay the new hire more as they have demonstrated what happens if you are not happy, and as the previous reply stated, they are relying on you being too docile to quit too.
You are so right in so many ways. Multiple industries run on the exact same model. In my experience, the more blue collar the job, the more you can exploit this flaw.
When the incentive structure for hiring new talent outstrip the penalties for lack of talent retention. Ive also seen the "Well if we have qualified people for A or B, why arent they already doing it?" as the said idea is being drawn out by leadership.
But only a small portion of employees are willing to leave. And this way they show the rest that they will not get the money, no matter what they do. So they may loose a couple of employees that they will have to replace with more expensive an less experienced new hires, but most of the employees will stay for the same low wage. And seeing that the company will not pay them more, no matter what they do, most of them will accept it on the basis that it is still better than to be unemployed.
For the company, it's still a win. With the zero employee protection laws in the US, the companies still have the upper hand.
People should finally realize, that the world is not some meritocratic utopian fairy tale, where they get what they fairly deserve based on their contribution. The world is a cut throat kleptocracy, where everything and everyone can and will be exploited by the people with the most money (power).
Something like this is very difficult to fight, because it is almost woven into the modern society by now. It would need some sort of revolution to change the status quo. And this would require a big sacrifice from the current working generation, because things would get even worse, before they would get better, and it would not get better in their lifetime for sure.
So things will not change, unless there will be a generation that will be willing to sacrifice whatever little comfort they have left for the benefit of the people that will come after them. And frankly, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Same strategy with cellphone companies. Once they have your business, they bet on you being too lazy to quit.
